Through the Eyes of Faith

God is always present. There is no

time that God is not present, active,

engaged, and available.

The upheaval that we are all

experiencing together is worldwide.

The pandemic is affecting the

population of the whole earth, every

country, every economy. There is no

place on earth that the virus has not

touched because viruses do not

recognize state lines, national borders,

race, religion, or any other dividing line

humans have designed. I suspect that

this is a unique time in human history.

It is my suspicion this is the only

time that the whole of humanity has

experienced the same phenomena at

the same time. We are all amid the

raging storm together.

Of course, the way individuals, and

local, state, national governments have

dealt with the pandemic varies widely.

Some are skeptical of it, though over

9 million people worldwide have been

infected and almost 2.5 million of those

infections are in the United States –

about 30% of worldwide cases; and to

date 480,00 people have died as a

result of the novel coronavirus. Some

choose to reject the advice of health

experts and wear face coverings,

practice social distancing or

acknowledge the risk. Others are so

anxious about the disease they are

frightened to leave their homes,

sanitize anything and everything

and do the best they can to live in

quarantine. Most of us are trying our

best to balance our safety and the

safety of the ones we love with the

necessity of working outside the home,

interacting with people and all the

gether safely and calling those,

“Meet Me Events” available to

children, youth, and adults. They

are detailed elsewhere in this

newsletter. If you feel comfortable,

join us. We hope to expand the

“Meet Me” events to wider groups

in the church as time passes.

Even in these intentionally safe

events we have concern for

welfare and safety --- because we

love each other, and we want each

other to be healthy.

Please join us for online worship

on Sundays.

Please check on one another. Call,

text or make safe visits with one

another. Send cards. But please

check on each other.

And continue to pray for the church

leaders as they try to discern what

God is speaking to us as a congre-

gation. We are convinced that

there is no time that God is not

present, active, engaged, and

available.

Peace and Love,

Jerry

Worship Livestream

Begins at 10:35am

Each Sunday the worship service

is being livestreamed beginning

at 10:35am.

You may find the livestream on

Facebook and YouTube.

YouTube are on the church’s

dangers that brings.

Churches are responding differently,

too. Some congregations refused to

cease in-person worship at any time

or went back to in-person worship as

soon as they legally could. Some have

instituted safety protocols, and some

have shunned any effort to mitigate

viral spread.

It is all difficult and confusing and

bewildering and produces stress and

anxiety in almost all of us. It has

changed us. The virus has changed us.

But there is no time that God is not

present, active, engaged, and available.

In study and in prayer, in consultation

with science and reflecting on faith,

the leadership of First Christian Church

is doing the best it can to provide

fellowship and worship and learning

when being together puts us at a greater

risk than staying apart. There is no

handbook for navigating this. There is

no clear word from God that illuminates

a pathway for us to follow. If it were only

that clear and simple. There are several

churches in Winchester who have

returned to in-person worship. We pray

for their safety. We pray for their worship

services to be meaningful and safe.

They are our neighbors, our co-workers,

our friends. We pray for them and we

hope they are praying for us as our

leadership continues to discern what

God is calling us to do.

We will return to in-person worship.

We have prepared so that when we do

worship in person it will be as safe as

we can make it, but we are still discern-

ing when it will be safe enough. When

we return to

in-person worship there will still be risk.

How much risk are we willing to live

with?

It is not easy being apart. But there is no

time that God is not present, active, en-

gaged, and available.

We are trying some ways to get us to-

Shawna Mitchell, Rev. Dr. Jerry

... time to take up a hobby

... time to clear your mind

We know that some of our most

special things have been changed,

postposed, and canceled, and I just

want to thank you for the grace you

have shown through it. We know you

have been watching the news, asking

questions, and praying for one anoth-

er. Your tears are not forgotten. God

loves you dearly.

The Children’s Ministry Team of First

Christian Church is brainstorming a

few ways to use the CDC guidelines

for our benefit the next few weeks /

months. We have no idea when things

will return to normal, but we know the

power of connections and connected-

ness, meeting and being met, so we

want to extend these ideas with you.

We are calling these

New Livestream Setup in Place

Thanks to William Warfield and Warfield Media the church has invested in a

state-of-the-art livestream system. The new system allows the church to continue

to livestream the worship service now and after we return to in-person worship.

The livestream has been watched from Washington state to Metairie, LA from

Winchester to Oslo, Norway. It has expanded the church’s worship reach beyond

our imagination and the Administrative Board has been intent on sustaining the

livestream well into the future.

The new livestream system gives the church that capacity. Watch every Sunday

beginning at 10:35am as we worship together and learn how to use the new

features of the system.

Statement of Identity We are Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us. If we are who we profess to be, then we must do as the Lord directs. Matthew 22:9 says “Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.” There is room at the Lord’s Table for all God’s children. Let us come together to celebrate the bread of heaven.
