“On The Road Again”
Summer has officially arrived! I’ve been hearing from many of you
about your ride and rally adventures. Thank you to those who have
shared their stories for all of us to enjoy.
Our summer picnic will be held on August 25th at Conneaut Lake
Park. Last year we had a beautiful day with about 40 Retreads. I’ve
ordered lots of sunshine again this year. The reservation form is in-
cluded in this newsletter. Let’s see if we can top the number of Re-
treads we had last year. Reservations are due by August 12th.
The Western PA Rally will be officially underway in less than 2
weeks. Final plans are being made. Volunteers are signed up to staff
most of the shifts in the hospitality room and lead the guided rides.
There are several new guided tours this year. We are still accepting
rally registrations. If you haven’t sent yours in yet, why not do it to-
day. At last word, there were still rooms at the Quality Inn & Suites
so call soon to reserve your spot at the Rally headquarters. Available
again this year, for the rally, are day passes for those who would like
to participate but are unable to come for all three days. The registra-
tion form for day passes is below. Pre registration isn’t mandatory for
a day pass, except for the Dinner Boat Cruise, but would be appreciat-
ed for planning purposes.
I wish all of you a Happy and safe 4th of July and look forward to
seeing many of you at the Western PA Rally and/or Picnic.

2019 Mid-Atlantic Retreads Rally
Submitted by Darryl & Nancy Boleratz
May 15th was a cold morning. We left home at 7:00 am and it was 43 degrees. Heading east on Route 6 to
Union City, then south on Route 8, the temperature dropped to 35 degrees and we saw frost. We contin-
ued south on Route 36 to I-80. There were several areas on Routes 8 and 36 that the fog was very thick
and visibility was poor. We were disappointed in the condition of Route 36. From Pleasantville to Route
66 was rough and in need of repaving. By the time we got to I-80, it was much warmer. We got off I-80
on Route 970 and onto Route 322. A lunch stop was at Wendy’s at State College which was good and we
continued east and arrived at Bird-in-Hand at 1:50 pm. It was great to see many Retreads and visit as we
signed in at the registration table and then signed up for rides for each day.
The ice cream social was at 6:00 pm and we did lots of visiting with
many Retreads until 8:00 pm. The weather at Bird-in-Hand was
beautiful on Wednesday.
Thursday morning was rainy un-
til 8:15 am, then the sky cleared
and it was a warm, sunny day.
We went on a ride to an iron and
steel museum of the former
Lukens Steel Plant and offices
and home in Coatesville which
was very interesting. Lukens
Steel has several of the steel tree beams from the World Trade Center.
They had been made at Lukens Steel. Lukens Steel also made the
steel plates for many Navy ships. Lunch was at Harry’s Hotdogs and
they had a lot more than hotdogs. Our ride was great with only three Goldwings and one Spider. Our ride
leader was Ron Scott and he did a great job.
We went to Shady Maple for dinner and then returned to Bird-in
-Hand for the evening entertainment which was a ventriloquist.
Friday morning was beautiful. We went on a ride to the Plump-
ton Park Zoo in Rising Sun, Maryland. We spent about two
hours at the zoo checking out all the different animals. Lunch
was at Old South Smoke House and was very good. On our ride
back to the Bird-in-Hand Family Inn, the temperature was 83
degrees. What a beautiful day and a great ride led by Greg Gill.
There were seven bikes and one auto on this ride.
We went to the barbeque at 6:00 pm and enjoyed another won-
derful meal and lots of visiting with several Retreads. At 8:00 pm,
we attended a Reps meeting which went quite well. There was some
discussion regarding the need to increase the membership dues. All
were in agreement in recommending an increase of five dollars. Art
will present that at the directors meeting.
Saturday morning was perfect for riding. We went on a ride led by
Ed & Cathy Benner. It was a scenic ride through the countryside
and a few towns. We had lunch in Birdsboro, PA at the Italian Del-
ite Restaurant & Pizzeria. Lunch was great and then we rode to St.
Peter’s Village and walked around the village a bit and spent some
time in a video arcade that had old pinball machines and some other game machines. We enjoyed playing
pinball for about thirty minutes. The trip back to Bird-in-hand was good and we traveled on some roads
that we had never been on. There were
ten bikes and two autos on this ride and
we enjoyed it. The temperature was in
the seventies and sunny.
The banquet was at Good and Plenty
and there was plenty of good food. Fol-
lowing the meal, there were a few an-
nouncements. The 2020 Mid-Atlantic
Rally will be May 14 – 16, 2020. The
amount raised this year for 4 Diamonds
was $3,352 and Sophie Ruiz was intro-
duced. She is an eighteen year old cancer
survivor who was helped by 4 Diamonds.
She spoke for a few minutes about what
she had gone through and how she was
helped and was very appreciative.
There were 178 registered for the rally
from 15 states and 1 province. Several awards were given. The $500 was won by Don Lentz. The 50/50
was won by Elaine Levin of Rhode Island and she received $337. There were lots of prizes given and eve-
ryone enjoyed the evening.
The Mid-Atlantic Retreads did another fantastic job with the 2019 rally. We are looking forward to at-
tending next year.
