EDITORIAL
Last years figures in brackets.
JOHN CLIFFORDIt was with great sadness we learned of John's suddenpassing on the 10th June. Sheila and John Cliffordformed The Michelmersh and Timsbury walking groupback in the nineties and it is to them we owe the fact thatwe are still meeting every Thursday morning andenjoying our hikes.John was always very active, skiing for many years andplaying golf as well as hiking. He also loved his gardenand grew lots of produce on his allotment. For someyears he had played croquet and it was good to know hehad enjoyed a game on the day he died.We usually start and end our walks at a pub and Johnthoroughly enjoyed our group getting together for a pintand a pub lunch after our walks. He will be sadly missed..

At long last summer seems to have arrived and on page 4 are details of the Village BBQ which will take place laterthis year. If you haven’t been before, do buy tickets and come along. It’s a great way to get to know fellow villagerswhilst enjoying yourself. On page 5 is a message to note. Please keep your speed down whilst driving in the village.A poignant point made is that 30mph is very often too fast!In the not too distant future details will appear of the films we will be presenting in the Jubilee Hall this Autumn andWinter. The first date is Friday 3rd October. Please support these.

FRIENDS OF MICHELMERSH CHURCHOn May 22nd the Friends held their AGM. Dee Tuffillreported a busy and successful year beginning in June2013 with a re-dedication of the newly installed Bells inthe Church Tower at St Marys. The 2013 AGM minuteshad been circulated and approved. The Committee waselected en block, with Dee Tuffill elected as Chairman,Janet Simmonds taking over as Secretary and RogerWilson resuming his role as Treasurer. The programme for the coming year was distributed tothose present, setting out a varied and interestingschedule of events.
Following the AGM Tom Robley gave an interesting andinformative talk on the History of Mottisfont Abbey.Charting its fortunes from a simple wooden church, to aPriory and later an Abbey. During the reign of HenryEight it was partially demolished but survived to becomea family home in the later centuries before playing a part
in both the first and second world wars. Now owned bythe National Trust it continues to be a ‘gem’ on ourdoorstep.
In June the Friends gathered to hear Gabriel Tyira fromPars Rug Gallery share his considerable knowledge onthe history of Oriental Rug and Tapestry Weaving. His enthusiasm for his subject was evident as heshowed examples of some of the varied patterns andweaves from across the world, with each rugdemonstrating a unique record of the culture and designof its country of origin.
The next meeting of the Friends will be on Thursday 18September at 7.30pm at the Barns when SerenaBrown (Costume Designer) will give a talk entitledCostumes for TV and Stage. All visitors will be madevery welcome.

Message from the Annual Parish Meeting - Road Safety
Please keep your speed down when driving on village roads. Our roads are not just for vehicles:
- give pedestrians plenty of room - expect to find people walking on the road round every corner - always obey the speed limit but adjust your speed to the road
conditions. 30 mph is often too fast.

Day off Friday
The Holy Spirit and You
Christianity is not about rules, regulations, rituals or religion but a relationship of love andintimacy with God, such that we know him as Father. So it’s not merely things we believe,it’s an experience of God. This relationship with the living God is a result of the Holy Spirit atwork in our lives.
After Jesus had been raised from the dead and before he returned to heaven, Jesus promisedhis followers that the Holy Spirit would come to take his place. This would be to theiradvantage said Jesus, for on earth he could only be in one place at one time. The Holy Spiritwould be with every follower of Jesus in every age in every place. Jesus could only be withhis disciples; the Holy Spirit can be in us, and fill us with God’s power. The Holy Spirit is, asone Sunday school child said, ‘an invisible Jesus everywhere’!
So the Holy Spirit is God’s empowering presence; God making his home in our lives, Godacting in our world today, working among us, in us and through us.
TransformationThe Holy Spirit comes to us with the express purpose of transforming our characters step bystep to make us more like Jesus. He comes to clean up the mess, heal the hurts, smooth offthe edges, change the negative attitudes and make us whole. That’s a lifelong process!
FreedomThe Holy Spirit comes to set us free. God longs to set people free from the things that holdthem prisoner. Does that mean we never have difficulties or that we never suffer? No. Does itmean that we can experience freedom to be the people God created us to be? Yes.
From what might we need to be set free? A guilty conscience perhaps; or a sense that we areonly loved conditionally, if we get things right? Or maybe from fear of the future, of beingalone; of rejection; or from resentment, hurt or bitterness; or from the lie that God is angrywith us.
Whatever binds us, Jesus came to win our freedom and the Holy Spirit makes that happen inour experience.
Power to serve – love to giveThe Holy Spirit comes to help us carry on God’s mission in his world. That mission is one oflove, compassion and healing for hurting people and a broken world. He wants to use us, asindividuals and communities of Christians, to tell others the good news that people can beforgiven, restored to a relationship with God their Creator and have hope for the future, because of what Jesus has done for us.

We are very busy painting for our exhibition atHillier's Arboretum ,a hive of industry everyWednesday. Near the end of this term we will bereviewing the paintings we hope to enter andkeeping our framer busy, so as to be ready forOctober. Due to this we had no visiting artist thisterm.Chris Marlow and myself have paintings in theexhibition at Moors Valley Country Park and GillBrophy has work at Hillier's in the 50/50photography and paintings exhibition. It is interesting that although our members comefrom quite a wide area we have links with the
locality through family relationships. Our treasurerJill Jennings has spotted the name of her cousin onthe 'Tree' board , Robin and Jennifer Lalonde. Jilloriginally came from Australia and spent much timein the Channel Islands, so it is strange that thisshould happen. Jackie Green has also discovereda family connection. Her great grandfather, HenryPearce live in Awbridge in the 19th century. Bothpaint every Wednesday close to their roots!Very rushed to get this done,so I will do the quiz nexttime.
