GRANTS PASS, Ore –
More than three years
after winning his first
PBA50 Tour title, Mike
Dias of Lafayette, Colo.,
captured the second title
of his career by winning
the PBA50 Grants Pass
Open presented by
Track.
Dias defeated PBA Hall
of Famer Dale Eagle of
Newport Beach, Calif.,
229-224, in the champi-
onship at Caveman
Bowl to win his first
title since winning the
Senior Don Carter Open
in April of 2011.
Dias jumped to the
early lead in the title
match starting with the first four strikes
and Eagle answered with five in a row
from the fourth to eighth frames, but a
pocket 7-10 split in the ninth and a
missed 10-pin back in the third frame
ultimately cost Eagle the match.
“The title match was probably represen-
tative of the whole tournament,” said the
57-year-old Dias. “It was a combination
of getting some breaks, making the right
ball changes and staying out of trouble.
With a longer oil pattern this week it was
really a challenge.”
Dias’ previous best finish
this season was fourth in the
season-opening Pasco
County (Fla.) Open.
“Coming into this season I
felt I was getting closer and
closer to getting another
win,” Dias said. “I really put
in a lot of work over the off-
season and I feel like it’s
paying off.”
Eagle was trying for his
13th career PBA50 Tour title
which would have put him in
second all alone on the
PBA50 Tour career titles list.
Currently he is tied for sec-
ond with Gary Dickinson
with 12 titles, two behind
leader John Handegard with
14 wins.
In the semifinal matches Dias defeated
Harry Sullins of Chesterfield Twp.,
Mich., 258-247, to advance to the cham-
pionship match while Eagle defeated
two-time defending PBA50 Player of the
Year Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala,
Fla., 237-228, who was trying for his sec-
ond win of the season.
Dias’ win breaks a streak of six consec-
utive PBA50 Tour tournaments this sea-
son which have been won by PBA Hall of
Famers.
SHAWNEE, Okla. – Australia’s Jason
Belmonte won four straight matches on a
demanding Bear lane condition, including a
193-145 decision over top qualifier E.J. Tackett
of Huntington, Ind., in the title match to win his
10th career title in the Professional Bowlers
Association Oklahoma Open at the Grand
Casino Resort Event Center.
In a competition that mirrored the United
States Bowling Congress Masters held earlier in
the year, the reigning PBA Player of the Year
came into the Oklahoma Open finals as the No.
5 qualifier and won four consecutive matches
for the victory. Belmonte also went from fifth to
first in the Masters when he also defeated
Tackett for that title.
The finals of the fourth of five Oklahoma’s
Grand Casino Resort PBA Summer Swing
events, contested on the flat 40-foot Bear lane
condition. The finals aired on CBS Sports
Network. Tackett, as the leading qualifier,
earned the right to select the lane condition for
the finals and he opted for the demanding U.S.
Open-style oiling pattern.
The difficulty of the scoring conditions result-
ed in the first PBA Tour finals in history without
a 200 game.
Belmonte, who won $18,000 and a berth in
the end-of-series Oklahoma’s Grand Casino
Resort King of the Swing special event, reached
the 10 career titles milestone in only 80 PBA
Tour events, the second-fastest in PBA history
behind legendary hall of famer Dick Weber.
Weber won 10 of the first 23 PBA events held
between 1959 and 1962.
The Australian two-handed star’s climb to the
Oklahoma Open title – his third of the 2014 sea-
son – was even more impressive considering he
was in seventh place going into the final game
of match play at FireLake Bowling Center ear-
lier in the week, and threw a 256 game to move
up two places and qualify for the CBS Sports
Network finals.
“The one thing I really pride myself on is I
don’t care how bad I’m bowling or how low I’m
scoring, every time I throw a ball it’s with every-
thing I’ve got,” Belmonte said. “That’s what you
have to do on the PBA Tour. I knew I still had a
mathematical chance and I never gave up.”

RENO, Nev. – The two-year run of the United States
Bowling Congress Women’s Championships at the Reno-
Sparks Convention Center came to a close Monday as the
final squad of the 2014 event stepped off the championship
lanes.
The 81-day event kicked off April 11 and ushered in a new
era in the tournament’s 95-year history, switching from five-
player to four-player teams for the first time. The 2014 USBC
Women’s Championships also featured new divisions and an
all-scratch format for the first time since 2009.
During the 2014 event, six competitors joined the exclusive
50-Year Club, and five bowlers rolled perfect games, the
most in tournament history, bringing the all-time total to 25.
Two of the five bowlers who rolled perfect games, USBC
Hall of Famers Lynda Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, and
Jeanne Naccarato of Tacoma, Wash., used the momentum
from their big games to put themselves in position to capture
titles at the 2014 tournament.
Barnes started her 2014 tournament campaign by helping
Bowlieve In A Cure of Arlington, Texas, into the lead in
Diamond Team with a 2,819 series. Her perfect game came
the next day during doubles and helped her to a Division 1
All-Events-leading 2,140 total. She had sets of 779 in dou-
bles, 683 in singles and 678 in team.
Bowlieve In A Cure was led by Tennelle Milligan’s 752
series and included Team USA member Shannon O’Keefe
(724) and Kendra Gaines (665).
Naccarato sandwiched her 300 between games of 222 and
224 for a 746 series and teamed with fellow USBC Hall of
Famer Robin Romeo of Newhall, Calif., who added 733, for
a 1,479 series to lead Division 1 Doubles.
Former collegiate standout Danielle van der Meer of
Washington, Ill., capped her first Women’s Championships
appearance with games of 258, 248 and 245 for a 751 set and
the lead in Division 1 Singles.
The new format at the Women’s Championships includes
four average-based divisions in team and six divisions for
doubles, singles and all-events. All standings are unofficial
and pending final verification.

PBA’S OKLAHOMA OPEN DEMONSTRATES
DRAMA ISN’T ALWAYS BASED ON HIGH SCORES
The 2014 PBA Oklahoma Open demonstrated that you don’t always
have to have high scores to create exciting competition. The CBS Sports
Network stepladder finals of the fourth tournament in Oklahoma’s
Grand Casino Resort PBA Summer Swing was believed to be the first
four-match final in PBA history without a 200 game by any of the five
players. But it also was a telecast that produced a lot of drama.
For the second time in 2014, Australian two-handed power player
Jason Belmonte ran the table for the win, and in the process became the
first player to win a PBA Tour title by bowling four games under 200 in
the finals. In fact, no other player has ever won a title by bowling three
sub-200 games on TV.
Belmonte opened the finals with a 187-171 victory over Tommy Jones
in a match in which Jones was unable to solve the right lane. Despite his
inability to strike on that lane, the match was undecided going into the
10th frame after Belmonte left the 3-4-6-7-10 and failed to convert in his
ninth frame. Working on a strike in his ninth frame, Jones was in posi-
tion to win with another strike on his first shot in the 10th frame, but he
again left a 2 pin on the right lane.
In match two, O’Neill struck on four of his first five shots and
Belmonte started with a double, but then the difficult conditions slowed
the pace. O’Neill could have locked Belmonte out with a double in the
10th, but left a 2 pin after striking on his first shot. Belmonte, working
on a strike in the ninth, still had to double and he threw two clutch
strikes on the right lane to pull out a 199-191 victory. Belmonte left a 9
pin on his fill ball to fall short of 200.
In the semifinal match, Belmonte eliminated Chris Loschetter, 194-
175, by converting seven spares while Loschetter converted a battery of
difficult spares. But neither bowler doubled in the entire match.
The championship match – a rematch of the 2014 USBC Masters title
match won by Belmonte – became a runaway 193-145 victory for
Belmonte over top qualifier E.J. Tackett, but it also was in doubt early.
Tackett started with a double and Belmonte missed a 10 pin, and the
match was tied at 74-74 after five frames before Belmonte’s turkey
broke it open.
Despite the difficult scoring conditions, the Oklahoma Open wasn’t
the lowest scoring four-match TV show in PBA history. That distinction
unofficially belongs to the 1992 Showboat Invitational in Las Vegas,
won by Harry Sullins. The 1992 event had an aggregate score of 1,423
for four matches (204-168, 206-157, 193-170, 175-150) – 32 pins less
than the Oklahoma Open’s aggregate total of 1,455.

PBA SPARE SHOTS
Belmonte began his march to the title with a 187-171 decision over
Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C., throwing three strikes in the 10th
frame after failing to convert the 3-4-6-7-10 split in the ninth frame to
clinch the win. Jones threw strikes on four of his five shots on the left
lane, but his failure to strike on the right lane cost him a chance to win.
After struggling on the right lane throughout the second match,
Belmonte threw two clutch strikes in the 10th frame to rally from a 25-
pin deficit and eliminate Bill O’Neill of Langhorne, Pa., 199-191.
O’Neill also could have won with a double in the 10th frame, but left
a 2 pin after striking on his first shot.
In the semifinal match, Belmonte’s error-free game was enough to
get past Chris Loschetter of Avon, Ohio, 194-175. Belmonte and
Loschetter each threw only three strikes the entire game, but
Loschetter’s one open frame gave the Australian the margin he need-
ed.
In the championship match, Tackett started with two strikes but then
the challenging lane condition got the best of him. Belmonte broke
open a 74-74 tie in the fifth frame with a string of three strikes and
Tackett never challenged.
“Today was a matter of trying to not leave any splits and make the
spares you did leave. I did horribly on my spares in the title match,”
Belmonte said, “but the lanes were brutal and E.J. couldn’t get on a
run, so it ended up being not so bad for me.
“Generally when a lane condition breaks down, it goes from fresh oil
to a transition and then you’ll have something stable for about a game.
Then there will be another transition where you have a bit of room. But
today it felt like the condition changed every two or three frames, and
you didn’t know if the ball was going to hook or not,” he continued.
“It was really tough making adjustments. I kept hoping the lanes
would calm down, but they never did.
“Pretty much everyone except Tommy (Jones) and I got off to fast
starts, but after a couple of shots in each match, the balls started doing
silly things. Splits were common, spares were tough, so after E.J. start-
ed with two strikes, I told myself to just hang in there.
“Today was a grind fest and I lasted longer than the other guys.”
