GRANTS PASS, Ore – More than three years after winning his first PBA50 Tour title, Mike Dias of Lafayette, Colo., captured the second title of his career by winning the PBA50 Grants Pass Open presented by Track. Dias jumped to the early lead in the title match starting with the first four strikes and Eagle answered with five in a row from the fourth to eighth frames, but a pocket 7-10 split in the ninth and a missed 10-pin back in the third frame ultimately cost Eagle the match. “The title match was probably represen- tative of the whole tournament,” said the 57-year-old Dias. “It was a combination of getting some breaks, making the right ball changes and staying out of trouble. RENO, Nev. – The two-year run of the United States

Bowling Congress Women’s Championships at the Reno-

Sparks Convention Center came to a close Monday as the

final squad of the 2014 event stepped off the championship

lanes.

The 81-day event kicked off April 11 and ushered in a new

era in the tournament’s 95-year history, switching from five-

player to four-player teams for the first time. The 2014 USBC

Women’s Championships also featured new divisions and an

all-scratch format for the first time since 2009.

During the 2014 event, six competitors joined the exclusive

50-Year Club, and five bowlers rolled perfect games, the

most in tournament history, bringing the all-time total to 25.

Two of the five bowlers who rolled perfect games, USBC

Hall of Famers Lynda Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, and

Jeanne Naccarato of Tacoma, Wash., used the momentum

from their big games to put themselves in position to capture

titles at the 2014 tournament.

Barnes started her 2014 tournament campaign by helping

Bowlieve In A Cure of Arlington, Texas, into the lead in

appearance with games of 258, 248 and 245 for a 751 set and

the lead in Division 1 Singles.

The new format at the Women’s Championships includes

PBA’S OKLAHOMA OPEN DEMONSTRATES

DRAMA ISN’T ALWAYS BASED ON HIGH SCORES

The 2014 PBA Oklahoma Open demonstrated that you don’t always

have to have high scores to create exciting competition. The CBS Sports

Network stepladder finals of the fourth tournament in Oklahoma’s

Grand Casino Resort PBA Summer Swing was believed to be the first

four-match final in PBA history without a 200 game by any of the five

players. But it also was a telecast that produced a lot of drama.

For the second time in 2014, Australian two-handed power player

Jason Belmonte ran the table for the win, and in the process became the

first player to win a PBA Tour title by bowling four games under 200 in

the finals. In fact, no other player has ever won a title by bowling three

sub-200 games on TV.

Belmonte opened the finals with a 187-171 victory over Tommy Jones

in a match in which Jones was unable to solve the right lane. Despite his

inability to strike on that lane, the match was undecided going into the

10th frame after Belmonte left the 3-4-6-7-10 and failed to convert in his

ninth frame. Working on a strike in his ninth frame, Jones was in posi-

tion to win with another strike on his first shot in the 10th frame, but he

again left a 2 pin on the right lane.

In match two, O’Neill struck on four of his first five shots and

Belmonte started with a double, but then the difficult conditions slowed

the pace. O’Neill could have locked Belmonte out with a double in the

10th, but left a 2 pin after striking on his first shot. Belmonte, working

on a strike in the ninth, still had to double and he threw two clutch

strikes on the right lane to pull out a 199-191 victory. Belmonte left a 9

pin on his fill ball to fall short of 200.

In the semifinal match, Belmonte eliminated Chris Loschetter, 194-

175, by converting seven spares while Loschetter converted a battery of

difficult spares. But neither bowler doubled in the entire match.

The championship match – a rematch of the 2014 USBC Masters title

match won by Belmonte – became a runaway 193-145 victory for

Belmonte over top qualifier E.J. Tackett, but it also was in doubt early.

Tackett started with a double and Belmonte missed a 10 pin, and the

match was tied at 74-74 after five frames before Belmonte’s turkey

broke it open.

Despite the difficult scoring conditions, the Oklahoma Open wasn’t

the lowest scoring four-match TV show in PBA history. That distinction

unofficially belongs to the 1992 Showboat Invitational in Las Vegas,

won by Harry Sullins. The 1992 event had an aggregate score of 1,423

for four matches (204-168, 206-157, 193-170, 175-150) – 32 pins less

than the Oklahoma Open’s aggregate total of 1,455.

BELMONTEContinued from page one

PBA SPARE SHOTS

Belmonte began his march to the title with a 187-171 decision over

Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C., throwing three strikes in the 10th

frame after failing to convert the 3-4-6-7-10 split in the ninth frame to

clinch the win. Jones threw strikes on four of his five shots on the left

lane, but his failure to strike on the right lane cost him a chance to win.

After struggling on the right lane throughout the second match,

Belmonte threw two clutch strikes in the 10th frame to rally from a 25-

pin deficit and eliminate Bill O’Neill of Langhorne, Pa., 199-191.

O’Neill also could have won with a double in the 10th frame, but left

a 2 pin after striking on his first shot.

In the semifinal match, Belmonte’s error-free game was enough to

get past Chris Loschetter of Avon, Ohio, 194-175. Belmonte and

Loschetter each threw only three strikes the entire game, but

Loschetter’s one open frame gave the Australian the margin he need-

ed.

In the championship match, Tackett started with two strikes but then

the challenging lane condition got the best of him. Belmonte broke

open a 74-74 tie in the fifth frame with a string of three strikes and

Tackett never challenged.

“Today was a matter of trying to not leave any splits and make the

spares you did leave. I did horribly on my spares in the title match,”

Belmonte said, “but the lanes were brutal and E.J. couldn’t get on a

run, so it ended up being not so bad for me.

“Generally when a lane condition breaks down, it goes from fresh oil

to a transition and then you’ll have something stable for about a game.

Then there will be another transition where you have a bit of room. But

today it felt like the condition changed every two or three frames, and

you didn’t know if the ball was going to hook or not,” he continued.

“It was really tough making adjustments. I kept hoping the lanes

would calm down, but they never did.

“Pretty much everyone except Tommy (Jones) and I got off to fast

starts, but after a couple of shots in each match, the balls started doing

silly things. Splits were common, spares were tough, so after E.J. start-

ed with two strikes, I told myself to just hang in there.

“Today was a grind fest and I lasted longer than the other guys.”
