Breathing Correctly

Are you one that holds their breath during an exercise? Why is breathing so important? First and foremost, it supplies

oxygen to your brain and to the muscles. Another advantage to breathing correctly during exercise and sports is that it

produces more power in the movement. So what is the proper breathing technique to get the most out of the move-

ment? The rule of thumb is to “Exhale when Exer on”.

Let’s look at the dumbbell bench press. Figure A is your start and finish of the dumbbell bench press. Start the press at

the top with both hands above your chest; inhale while lowering the dumbbells to side of chest as in Figure B, and then

exhale while pressing the dumbbells back up to the top. You will find that you have more explosive power.

Have you thought about your breathing technique when playing your favorite sport? Where do you want the most

power in your game? In Football, you exhale while you are throwing the ball. Baseball, exhale while you are swinging

the bat. Golf, inhale on backswing and exhale during downswing. Tennis, for forehand swing, exhale during forward

mo on of swing.

“CHIPPING”

I continue to be amazed by the skill of chipping. Although this small shot in golf seems simple enough, mastering this skill is still the most sought after information that the members. Learning to chip it close will lower your scores in a hurry. Through the years I have witnessed that golfers get very “wristy” with this shot, and try to scoop the ball into the air. Unfortunately, this scooping motion causes poor contact and the dreaded sculling of the ball across the green. I never use the word “down” in my teaching, but the club must be swinging on a descending arc, rather than hitting up on the ball. That is way too much to think about in the middle of your chipping swing. I love to give my students drills that accomplish what we need to happen in the swing, but without having to say too much. In the photo above, I’ve placed a head-cover just behind my back foot. I make a normal backswing for the length of chip I wish to hit, and amazingly my brain sees the club head-cover and instead of scooping, I strike the ball with a descending blow. That happens automatically when my brain sees the “obstacle” and avoids it. The club is on a descending angle. Try this drill and see how crisp your chips will be. Next installment of Kim’s Korner will have mini USGA Rules of Golf quiz for your enjoyment!
