PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our mission as the Body of Christ in the parish of St. Jean Vianney is to model the love of Jesus by discerning and doing God’s will, consciously Sharing the Word and Eucharist at worship, educating in faith all ages, evangelizing our parishioners for Christ’s mission, and serving justly God’s people, our sisters and brothers within our parish boundaries, our larger Baton Rouge community, and into the world.

LIFE TOGETHER Greetings! Our beloved pastor is on a well deserved vacation. This presents me with an opportunity to write a letter to all of you in his place. I would like to start off by thanking so many of you for the many prayers and kind wishes I have received while I am out of the office recuperating from a knee replacement. It looks like I am approaching "home stretch" and it is my hope to return to work in the next couple of weeks. Recently I read an interesting letter to the editor in the Advocate. Amanda Brunson, Program Director for Prevention of Child Abuse in Louisiana, listed some suggestions to ensure that children develop safe guidelines while using the many opportunities available to them with today's technology. I felt that some of these guidelines would also be good reminders for adults. * Establish guidelines as to what information can be given out to others while on a computer, how much time is allowed using technology, and who are safe communicants. * Always install security software. * Control children's screen names and passwords. * Keep computers in a room where parents are able to monitor usage. * Program child-friendly search engines. * Always keep current with the latest technology. As parents, we should strive to maintain open communication with our children, no matter what their age. Finally, we should always report suspicious contacts to the proper authority. Our parish school of religion will begin in September. Dates are posted on our parish website. Now is the time to think about registration. Simply call the Office of Religious Education (751.2926) so we can make sure your child is registered and ready to start their classes for the new year. At present, we have an opening for a third grade volunteer teacher on Monday evenings. If you feel God may be calling you to share your faith with the youth of our community, call us so that we can explore your options. We welcome Fr. Joy, a mission priest from the Diocese of Kerala, India and ask you to keep him in your prayers. The second collection this weekend will provide Fr. Joy an opportunity to continue his good work in his Diocese.

Go to www.stewardshiptoday.org to get your online copy of Stewardship Today, a monthly publication for parishioners to embrace the importance of stewardship in daily living.

We extend our sympathy to the following parishioners who recently lost a loved one:

Tommy and Pam Doran on the death of his mother, Shirley.

Try to continue to "keep cool" as we approach the month of August in Louisiana! May God bless our parish community. Peace, Denise Louviere Director of Religious Education

Recommendations About Master Plan Project Given

Members of the Master Plan Committee, Parish Finance Committee, School Finance Committee, Parish Council and Parish Staff met with Mr. Ber-nard DuMond of the Institute of School and Parish Development on Wednesday, July 20 to receive the Attitudinal and Financial Feasibility Report on the proposed Master Plan project. The results were very positive. The Master Plan Committee is reviewing the results and will make a recommendation to Fr. Tom about the next steps during the month of August. Thanks to the many, many parishioners who have been a part of this entire process. Stay tuned!

A CALL TO THE SERVANTS OF GOD: Born in the Spirit of Faith Minister and Meet the Needs of Others As recorded in the fourth chapter of St. Luke’s Gospel, Jesus left the synagogue and a day of teaching to retire for the

day in the home of Simon Peter. St. Peter’s mother-in-law was ill, “af-flicted with a severe fever,” and the Great Physician promptly healed her. With all the tools God has provided us—persistent prayers, the intercession of clergy and sensitive laity, the healing work of the Spirit, the skills of medical professionals, the efficacy of medications, and the benefit of won-drous facilities and modern technology—we con-tinue to see God heal. For centuries, the Catholic Church has led the way, providing the best health-care in the region. Your willingness to serve others in need continues the work of Christ in the lives of those who are hurting.

Over the next few weeks, we will be discussing the changes to the words of the Mass in some detail. However, first it is important to know that the changes

made will not only create an English translation more closely resembling the original Latin, but much of the new translation will also more closely, if not exactly, match the Scriptures that inspired it. This is important because Scripture is the best manner in which we can learn about God. Scripture is God’s Word to us, and therefore one of our best methods to approaching the One Whom We Serve. There are many ways of saying things in different languages. Thus in English, we have arguably a myriad of ways of saying things. Anyone who has learned English as a second language can attest that our language is difficult to master because there are so many ways to say the same thing. The same is not always true of other languages. However, in all languages, there are appropriate ways of saying things. For instance, in English, at the fast food counter, it would not be unheard of for one to place their order by saying, something like “I want a three finger chicken box and a large tea please.” In Italian, for example, the equivalent of “I want” is voglio (vol-yo). This would be considered rude to use publicly, opting instead for vorrei (vor-I), translated as, “I would like…” The point is that there are a number of ways to say things, but there are also more appropriate ways to say things, and in our desire to worship God, we strive for the most appropriate words. We wouldn’t likely speak to God the same way we do casually with just anyone. In our private prayer, we often speak to God as we would our friends or close relatives, intimately and without filter, however, in the context of our public prayer, it is important that we speak reverently and purposefully. This dynamic further illustrates the intersection of the vertical and horizontal nature of our faith. There are a number of ways to approach God as seen in our private prayer and devotions and the style of liturgy we celebrate at each of our places of worship.
