Question: Has anyone received a recent OSHA inspection? If so, were there any areas of special emphasis such as temporary workers, combustible dust, etc? (Joe Clark) Frank: 2 OSHA inspections in 2014 from an employee complaint about a machine

smell. OSHA arrived with no alert but they were required to witness. Came back and did a full blown audit on the facility. Lockout Tag Out (DMI does have a program) Machines in the 200 ton range have multiple models with

different stop switches…if different machines, needed pictures on every machine. Reviewed audit with all employees. One CNC machine never had an interlock Label every pipe and direction of H2O flow All conduits labeled – electrical Every signal rack / shelf must have max capacity weight Recommendation: Hire outside help to get you better prepared

○ High end consultant: Name???○ Turnkey – much of a doing organization. The did a very good job.○ US Compliance (Set up audit books designed to keep OHSA in office as long as possible. Puts all OHSA

documents in one place…keep the inspector in the office as long as possible!) American Consulting Firm was really good (Meredith)

Auditor asked to see training records…gave her everything which created all of the audit paths. Better to ask: What would you specific like to see?

Al is an EHS professional for 30 years. Has experienced many audits in his time.

Question: What is the best way to grow safety committee teams, having a hard time getting associates involved? (Michael Hoye) Currently have safety committee members X 3

Bamar: We used an outside consulting firm that recommended teams be formed. Having top management back and enforce is key.

Laura: have each manager select a representative. Each department should be recommended. A combination of managers / shop floor employees.

Frank: We still have a large safety committee, but nobody is a safety expert. Jude: Suggest that you reach out to the WC carrier…they should have a Risk Manager that would work

with your Safety Committee. They can help you become a certified safety committee. Help with house keeping audits, etc. PA has a 5% reduction in WC premiums if you have a safety committee.

PA Chamber and Local Chamber of Commerce does this certification training.

We used to have the laundry list of items…the buck stops here President. Jim took notes and the organization began to change the system because safety mattered. This was about safety; it became a message that came from the highest ranking official. He was not the chair, but his presence delivered a messaged. Items were assigned and accountability was ensured!

State certification requires a rotation of people. Lisa / Viking: PATH in PA. www.dlistate.pa.us LA does not have a state certification…but if you want to develop

Board of certified safety professionals which has learning paths for those in leadership roles Use the local chapter of the National Safety Council

Question: Does anyone use web or cloud based safety training? If so, which provider? (Jude Krady) Trying to improve training…

Al: not currently using computer based training. Not sure if this is the most efficient training in all areas; especially in high hazard areas. Other things like HAZCOM could be computer based training. Currently using instructor led training at Intralox.

Use DVD’s from National Safety Compliance that all come with tests. Use a great deal of instructor led safety training. Use Routsis system is the “right to

know” Use drum beat meetings to provide training and use PP training from PATH. Will test on some areas.

Dekalb: Use National Safety Compliance also…the DVDs are very helpful. We have a safety calendar with a particular topic when the shift comes early or stays late. 30 minutes classes

Instructor led training and used the consulting firm to get everything organized. Would like to use the firm more often for refreshing the information.

MH: Do monthly PP and weekly training which is supervisor led. Michelle Baker: agree with Al and Michael for the extreme hazards. Use a great deal on

online training. We mix it up…on line training and instructor led. Ladder safety is done online www.ESAFETYONLINE.com www.OPENSESAME.com
