Happy B.C. Day!Celebrate the best of B.C. this holiday weekend Why B.C. Day?

According to the province, the British Columbia Day Act was

introduced in 1974 by the Hon. Ernie Hall, provincial secretary under Premier

Dave Barrett, “to recognize the pioneers of British Columbia by

declaring the first Monday of August in each year to be a public

holiday known as British Columbia Day.”

From Nelly Furtado to Steve Nash, Rick Han-sen to Emily Carr and too many politicians and business leaders to count, B.C. has produced more than its share of movers and shakers.

With its inspiring history and breathtaking natural environment, is it really any wonder?

And we’re fortunate here in Victoria to live among these provincial highlights every day.

The capital is home to both a rich First Nations culture and a legacy built by the pio-neers who arrived later to craft a new life in B.C.’s woods, and with its farms, forts, rivers and oceans – a diverse, fascinating history reflected in the region’s museums, art galleries and historic sites.

In fact, the Royal BC Museum has even com-piled a special BC Day Scavenger Hunt, perfect for testing your knowledge and learning a little more about the province’s history – see the next page for more details.

For those in a celebratory mood this week-end, local performers are happy to oblige. Symphony Splash will fill the Inner Harbour with music and fireworks Sunday, while the Victoria Electronic Music Festival will have fans dancing in Centennial Square both Satur-day and Sunday.

The music continues Monday with B.C. Day celebrations on the grounds of St. Ann’s Acad-emy.

So, what are you doing this B.C. Day week-end? It’s time to celebrate!

In addition to the BC Day holiday, this weekend also brings another summer favourite, Symphony Splash, Sunday, July 31.

Led by Maestra Tania Miller and the Victoria Symphony, playing from a barge in the Inner Harbour, this year’s concert features young soloist Alice Haekyo Lee, along with The Time-benders, Canadian Scottish Regiment Pipe and Drum Band, Music Corner Ensem-ble and Beacon Hill Brass.

The varied program includes both classical and modern selections, plus the finale favourite, Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, followed by fireworks.

The Victoria Symphony played its first-ever Symphony Splash in 1990 to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Thousands of people showed up at the Inner Harbour to watch the orchestra play on a barge moored off-shore. Today one of the largest annual symphony events in North America, Splash attracts up to 40,000 music fans to the Inner Harbour.

How to Splash• Those wanting to ensure a good view of the

barge for the 7:30 p.m. orchestra performance

arrive earlier in the day. The Family Zone opens from 1 to 4 p.m. with the popular Instrument Petting Zoo, face-painting, hands-on art activities, bouncy castle, music and more.

• Watch for volunteers with donation buckets or donation barrels – donate $5 or more and receive a Splash Button.

• You may want to bring a folding chair or blanket if you plan to sit on the Legis-lature lawn. If you do bring a chair, please observe all

posted signs and roped-off areas. Chairs can-not be set up before 8 a.m. July 31. The wind off the water can be chilly after sunset, so bring a sweater or wrap.

• A special area is reserved in front of the Fairmont Empress Hotel for people using wheelchairs. Call 250-385-6515 for details.

• Paddlers can take their kayaks and canoes near the barge to listen to the music from the water. The Harbour Master will let you know if your watercraft is too close to the barge.

• Food and beverage vendors are located on Government Street next to The Royal BC Museum. Portable washrooms and first aid sta-tions will be available.
