AN INTRODUCTION Hello everyone! My name is David Dashiell, and I am the new Associate Director of Liturgy for Neighbors North. Father Rushofsky has asked me to guest-write this column while he is away. While many of you may only know me by my picture in the bulletin, some have already ap-proached me in person and welcomed me to the community. I appreciate the warm welcome I have been given just two months into the position. There are so many people to meet and names to memorize. I am not sure if the introductions will ever end! As for those I have not yet spoken with, here is a bit about me. I am originally from Baltimore, Maryland (don’t worry, I am not a Ravens fan) and went to Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio. I spent many years on the Liturgy Committee, coordinating different ministries at the university and helping with their Summer youth and adult conferences. After getting a Master’s degree in Theology and Christian Ministry, I married my wife, Joanne, and lived with her in Nashville Tennessee for a year, substitute teaching. I am now working under Ted Rybka, helping to take stock of sacristies, organize worship space, and coordinate all things liturgical. A large part of this has been meeting with the current leaders of each ministry at each parish. Though we all do things differently, I have been impressed by the competence and effectiveness of the leaders. They certainly have their ministries running well! It is exciting to meet so many self-giving ministers and to plan ahead, considering what direction our liturgical ministries will take going forward. Much of my time is spent “on the ground,” having conversations and meeting people. It can sometimes be a workout, but getting to every Mass that the grouping has to offer and to the grouping’s picnic has been well worth it. Sometimes I am dumbfounded by the amount of festivals and fundraisers going on! Still, I know that there are many parishioners whom I have not yet met. If you see me before or after Mass at any of the parishes, please don’t hesitate to introduce yourself. I have often been saying lately that I wish that I could meet more of the parishioners. I am happy to be here serving you in this role, and I am happy to meet you and journey with this community into a unified parish in Christ.

FROM ONE OF OUR SAINTS:

“Beg our Lord to grant you perfect love for your neighbor, and leave the rest to Him. He will give you more than you know how to desire if you constrain yourselves and strive with all your power to gain it.” - Saint Teresa of Avila, The Interior Castle

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the passage from Luke’s Gospel that we hear today, the disciples ask Jesus to teach them how to pray. Jesus not only tells them what to say, he assures them of his Father’s attentiveness and concern. How do we pray? How do we speak to God? We gather each Sunday to pray together. During the week, we may take the oppor-

tunity to pray individually. We may wonder if God really hears our prayers or if we are praying effectively. Today’s scripture readings give us excellent opportunities to look for insight on how the Lord expects us to pray and what we can expect from our heavenly Father.

“Lord, on the day that I cried out for help, you answered me.” —Psalm 138

Parish Social Ministry

Calix What is Calix? It is a Catholic support program for those who are suffering from addiction. It does not replace AA or NA. Rather, it provides another level of support for those who are Catholic; to bring their faith into their journey of recovery.

The society was founded in Minneapolis, MN in 1947 by a group of five men, all recovering alcoholics, who saw their faith as a sure path to serenity and recovery. ‘Calix’ is Latin for ‘chalice’, and these men accepted the idea that they were substituting “the cup that sanctifies for the cup that stupefies.”

The Calix Society can say to Catholics who have suffered with addiction and may have left the church, been hurt by the church or are angry with the church, “Come back home”. The ultimate goal is to lead those in recovery back to the rich sacramental life of the Catholic Church. Meetings will begin on August 13 with a Mass at 7:00pm at Madonna of Jerusalem Church in Sharpsburg. It will be followed by a reception at the John Paul I center. For more information, contact Addiction Recovery Ministry at 412-218-5410, or email [email protected].

Thank You! Parishioners from all four Neighbors North churches have reached out to volunteer in Social Ministry. Not only are you very much needed, it is also a very encouraging sign that we can and will work and grow together!

Food Pantry Needs: Juice, peaches, peas, carrots, pudding, jello, spaghetti, jar pasta sauce, beef stew, canned chicken, chili, broth, macaroni and cheese, jelly, cake and brownie mix, Knorr noodles and rice, condiments and detergent. Please leave in the food collection bin in the back of St. Sebastian Church. Thank you!

Rosary for Unity and Healing: Please join us as we pray the rosary for our Neighbors North Catholic Community this Friday, at 9:00am beginning at St. Athanasius Church. We travel to each church and pray a decade of the rosary, beginning and ending at the same church. All are

welcome to come and pray for our community.

Do You Recognize this Box? As we all enjoy the beauty and bounty of summer, there are those in our community who are in need. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul gets requests for food, gasoline, rent/mortgage assistance, and utility bills. Many of those receiving assistance are elderly or disabled and living on a fixed income. Some are families with young children and the many expenses that go with raising a family. Assistance is given without judgment and all information is treated as confidential. Thank you for your continued support. We could not do this without you!

Marriage Moments by Saint Sebastian Married Life: The Empty Nest by Judy Clark

“Marriage is a vocation to holiness. From their first days as husband and wife through their golden years, married couples have the awesome task of

witnessing to God’s faithful love to each other, their children, and society. No couple does this perfectly, and everyone needs

help when love feels strained and the going gets tough. All marriages can grow in knowledge, faith, joy, and love. Whether you are just starting out in marriage or have fifty years under your belt, the advice, real life stories, and Church teaching here can help strengthen and bless your marriage. The Situation: Tom and Mar ibeth were college sweethear ts now marr ied 29 years. They feel they have a stable marriage that has involved raising four children. It has been a wild ride of parenthood with a few hair-raising experiences. Still, they both agree that all four have been successfully launched into adulthood. And now that their youngest has recently married, they are truly an “empty nest” marriage, not just the “shifting nest” of college years and a few years beyond. The couple has been very involved parents from the moment their first child was born after two years of marriage. Life with four children was busy and parenting was often emotionally draining and exhausting. Many days they found themselves waving goodbye to each other as they split up to take the children to their separate events and activities. They seemed to never have enough time for each other and would talk yearningly about how things would be when the kids were grown and they were simply a couple again. Now that time has come. To their surprise Tom and Maribeth aren’t sure just how to begin living it. They have devoted so much of themselves to raising a family, and much of their communication has been directed to that end. They find themselves experiencing a strange emptiness in their daily lives and even feel uncomfortable in their conversations together. They both are deeply committed to each other but aren’t sure just what the “good life” of being a twosome again will be for them. Some tips from the article: Reconnecting… Redefining the Relationship...Reinvesting in New Growth…” To read the entire article and other articles on marriage, engagement as well as on relationship and families, visit: www.foryourmarriage.org/the-empty-nest/

The Seventeenth Sunday

in

Ordinary Time

O our most holy Father: Our Creator, Redeemer, Consoler, and Savior, You are in heaven: And in the angels and saints, Inflaming us to love, because You, Lord, are love, And filling us with happiness as our Supreme and Eter-nal Good. Glorious is Your name: May our knowledge of You become ever clearer That we may know Your blessings and Your majesty. Direct our vision to let you rule in us through Your grace, and so we enjoy a blessed companionship with You forever. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven:

That we may love You with our whole heart, Desire You with our whole soul, Always think of You with affection. Your Kingdom come: Give us unclouded clarity to see you in everything, Spend all our energies in serving You, And that we may love our neighbors with Your love. Give us this day our daily Bread: Which is our Beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. And forgive us our trespasses: Through Your indescribable mercy to us in Christ, Which we see in the faith and prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Help us to forgive those who trespass against us: You, Lord, enable us to forgive to the full So that we may truly love our enemies and intercede for them. Lead us not into temptation: Keep us from all sin, hidden or obvious. Deliver us from evil: Keep us from all that’s bad in the past, present, and to come.

(The following is a paraphrase of the Lord’s Prayer

penned by St. Francis of Assisi in the 13th Century.

Use it for your meditation or reflection this week. )

Youth Ministry

To My St. Teresa Parish Family & Neighbors North Catholic Community, For the past four years of my life, I have been a part of a fantastic community at St. Teresa of Avila Parish. Here I found a welcoming community filled with helpful, giving, and loving, faith–filled people. It was my utmost pleasure to minister to you all, but in particular to the middle school and high school teens of the parish whom I had the pleasure to guide and teach. From the St. Teresa of Avila teens and their families, I learned so much about the faith. It is cliché to say, but my

teens taught me just as much about God as I hopefully taught them. However, the truth of this world is that, other than God’s love, nothing ever stays the same. To that end, I have found that it is time for me to make a change in my life and move onward in a different career. I hate to leave St. Teresa as a youth minister, but I will continue to be present as a fellow parishioner even if I am no longer actively working for the church. It is rare to find such a close and welcoming community like St. Teresa and I was happy to serve you all as the youth minister. From the creation of the middle school youth group to the building of the Interior Castle Coffee House & Spiritual Library, I was happy to do what was in my power to build up the parish community. I hope that any unintentional mistakes I may have made will be viewed with indulgence from my fellow parishioners and that any achievements that came as a result of my ministry here will be viewed as only being possible through the grace of God and the support of the community. To my teens in particular, I wish to say that I will always be there for you if you need me, but more importantly that God will always be with you through all your trials and triumphs. The Catholic Church is better because these young people are a part of it. They are the Church of today and of the future. It is in these young people that I truly see God’s love played out in the world more than any-where else. May God’s love and blessings be with all of you. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this amazing community for the last four years. Sincerely,

Susan Mohall-Szymanski

Kentucky Recap Take 2: Our second recap comes from the Super Group Combo of Mike and Jando. These two groups came together to work on three trailers that were right next to each other and housed three siblings. One trailer needed a ramp added, most of them had structural

issues under their trailers, (we call this trailer diving) flooring work was accomplished, a bit of roofing touch ups, and door ways needed to be widened. This super group team

went above and beyond for their families! Enjoy the photos from their work site for the week.

MARRIAGE MOMENT by Susan Vogt

Having a disagreement? Try this: Rate how strongly you feel about the issue on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being “I would be devastated to give in on this one.” Spouse also rates the issue. Sometimes the partner with the lesser investment will be willing to give in - this time. If you're both about 5, seek a middle ground. If you're both around 10, seek a creative new solution or put off the decision and agree to disagree for now. Don't play games though. If one partner ALWAYS feels like a 10, he or she may need to deal with control issues.

Parent Pointers by Susan Vogt: Don't downplay your teen's troubles even if you think they are trivial. Teens are working on the skills they need to become functioning adults. Offer support in the form of listening. What may seem small to you may be very big to your teen. Actually this same maxim works for children of all ages.
