Who are the keynote speakers?

Dr. Burns, Superintendent of CFBISD, will give welcoming remarks on Monday,

July 27 at 8:00 AM and Monday, August 3 at 8:00 AM to kick off each week of the

conference.

Marc Prensky is the keynote speaker on Wednesday, July 29 at 8:30 AM and 1:00

PM.

Marc Prensky is an internationally acclaimed thought leader, speaker, writer, consultant, and designer in the field of education.

Considered one of the world’s leading experts on the connection between education and technology, Marc’s professional focus is on designing better pedagogy and curriculum for the digital generation, and on helping people understand how to thrive in the digital age.

Marc’s ideas are both practical and visionary. Strategy+Business magazine calls him “That rare visionary who implements.” He has spoken in over 35 countries, and presents regularly throughout the globe.

Marc recently founded THE INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL FUTURE EDUCATION, a not-for-profit organization devoted to advancing the powerful ideas of A New World Curriculum, Future-oriented Education, and Accomplishment-Based Education in primary and secondary education worldwide.

Marc strives to understand the perspective of today’s students, offering solutions both for how to teach and motivate them, as well as for how to motivate and reinvigorate teachers. Through his writings and talks, Marc helps educators learn to adapt their offerings in ways that are far more effective for today and tomorrow, including both new curriculum and a new form of “partnering” between teachers and students. Prensky focuses on how to best put human minds and digital tools together wisely — in school and in life. In his talks to business groups, Marc shows audiences how to work with young people successfully in the turbulent 21st century.

Marc is the author of five books: From Digital Natives to Digital Wisdom (Corwin, 2012) Teaching Digital Natives (Corwin, 2010), Don’t Bother Me, Mom, I’m Learning (Paragon House, 2006), Digital Game-Based Learning (McGraw Hill, 2001) and Brain Gain: Technology and the Quest for Digital Wisdom (Palgrave MacMillan 2012). He is also the author of the 2001 article Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants. Marc’s books and articles have been translated into over 10 languages. Marc has two new books in progress: “Practical Future-education”, and “New Basics and New Balance for a New Age”. They will appear shortly.

As a part of his talks around the globe, Marc initiates and conducts unique educator-student (and manager-worker) dialogs about the teaching, training and learning

6

processes — it is often the first time the groups have ever spoken to each other about these important subjects.

Marc is a strong proponent of “passion-based learning” — i.e. teachers’ knowing and using students’ individual passions as motivators — and of students’ participation in the design of their own education. He helps educators teach future-oriented skills — including problem-solving, partnering, collaborating in online communities, video-making and programming — as an integrated part of all curricula.

Marc’s innovative combination of pedagogy and technology is becoming increasingly accepted and used worldwide as the wave of the future.

Alan November is the keynote speaker on Thursday, July 30 at 8:30 AM.

Alan thrives on confirming and challenging

educators’ thoughts about what’s possible in

the world of teaching and learning. More than

anything, he is a teacher at heart, with a wealth

of experience teaching learners of all ages.

Alan November is an international leader in education technology. He began his career

as an oceanography teacher and dorm counselor at an island reform school for boys in

Boston Harbor. While Alan was a computer science teacher in Lexington, MA, he was

probably the first teacher in the world to have a student project on line in 1984, a

database for the handicapped. He has been director of an alternative high school,

computer coordinator, technology consultant and university lecturer. He has helped

schools, governments and industry leaders improve the quality of education through

technology.

Audiences enjoy Alan’s humor and wit as he pushes the boundaries of how to improve

teaching and learning. His areas of expertise include planning across curriculum, staff

development, new school design, community building and leadership development. He

has delivered keynotes and workshops in all fifty states, across Canada and throughout

the UK, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Central America.

Alan was named one of the nation’s fifteen most influential thinkers of the decade by

Technology and Learning Magazine. In 2001, he was listed as one of eight educators to

provide leadership into the future by the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse. In 2007,

he was selected to speak at the Cisco Public Services Summit during the Nobel Prize

Festivities in Stockholm, Sweden. His writing includes numerous articles and two best-

selling books, Empowering Students with Technology and Web Literacy for Educators.

Alan was co-founder of the Stanford Institute for Educational Leadership Through

Technology and is most proud of being selected as one of the original five national

Christa McAuliffe Educators.

Each summer Alan leads the Building Learning Communities summer conference with

world-class presenters and international participants.

Dr. Tina Bryson is the keynote speaker on Monday, August 3 at 8:30 AM and 1:00

PM.

Dr. Tina Payne Bryson is the co-author (with Dan Siegel)

of the New York Times Best Selling THE WHOLE-BRAIN CHILD (Random House

Delacorte, 2011), which has now been published in over twenty languages, and

the New York Times best-selling NO-DRAMA DISCIPLINE (Random House Bantam,

2014). She is a psychotherapist at Pediatric and Adolescent Psychology Associates in

Arcadia, California, where she offers parenting consultations and provides therapy to

children and adolescents. She keynotes conferences and conducts workshops for

parents, educators, and clinicians all over the world, and she has written for numerous

publications, for example mom.me, SkillForKids and the PBS series “This Emotional

Life.” She has also co-hosted a web-based parenting show and makes frequent media

appearances at venues like TIME, “Good Morning America,” Huffington

Post, and Redbook. She is the Child Development Specialist at Saint Mark’s School in

Altadena, the Director of Parenting Education at the Mindsight Institute, the Director for

Child Development for Camp Chippewa in Cass Lake, Minnesota, and the Child

Development Director for Lantern Camps. Tina earned her Ph.D. from the University of

Southern California, where her research explored attachment science, childrearing

theory, and the emerging field of interpersonal neurobiology.

Tina emphasizes that before she’s a parenting educator, or a researcher, she’s a

mom. She limits her clinical practice and speaking engagements so that she can spend

time with her family. Alongside her husband of 19 years, parenting her three boys is

what makes her happiest: “They’re my heart. Their personalities make life so much

fun. They’ve also made my research very personal, helping bring together the different

roles I play in my life, where I’m part-time educator/researcher, and full-time Little-

League-mom/super-Jedi-spy-with-laser-powers. As I’ve studied attachment and

childrearing theory and the science of how brains work, I’ve been able to apply that

knowledge and let it help me parent more.”

Where do I park?

Parking is available on-site at Creekview High School at 3201 Old Denton Drive,

Carrollton. There are two lots available in the front of the building. Please leave the

visitor spots open for Creekview families coming to enroll and register for classes.

Additional parking will be available at Blalack Middle School. Shuttle service between

Creekview and Blalack will run throughout the day beginning at 7:30 AM and ending at

4:30 PM from the front circle of Creekview to the front of Blalack Middle School.

What are my options for breakfast, lunch, and snacks?

Healthy and affordable food options will be available during the breakfast and lunch

hours. We encourage conference participants to eat lunch on-site to build networks

with colleagues and take advantage of additional programming during the lunch hour,

such as Benefits enrollment, Innovation Station, & Fitness Revolution! In addition to

meal service, several student organizations will provide snack options for purchase.

Complimentary water and coffee will be provided throughout the conference. See menu

options and pricing for Breakfast & Lunch on page 9 of this brochure.
