COMMUNITY CORNER

“What’s in a name?” Have you ever heard those words from anyone other than your English teacher. Well, here is a well known name that I am sure your will recognize…it’s Albert Einstein. A brilliant mind, he often shared quotes with others. The one to which I am referring is “Learn from yesterday. Live for today. Hope for tomorrow.” His words today are as meaningful as they were years ago. Although most of us have lived through some type of world crisis, nothing seems to compare with the pandemic we are living through now. But, Einstein seems to be telling us, all is not lost because we always have hope.

The dictionary tells us hope is: to cherish a desire with anticipation. We all hope that a vaccine will be found soon, that our families, friends, neighbors and total strangers will care about the welfare of others and follow the protocols required in order for us to stop the spreading of COVID-19.

There is hope that we can lead by example. My definition for HOPEFUL is: Having Optimistic Plans Evolving From Ultimate Love.

We have all heard of Bob Hope and the diamond named Hope, but what’s in a name?

COMMUNITY NEWS AND UPDATES

My GHBC Family,

After 28 years, I have decided to retire. I will miss you all so very much. It has been a blessing, an honor to have been a part your lives. I have always felt that GHBC was and will always be my second family. We have shared so many amazing, unbelievable moments that I will treasure forever. Thank you so very much.

Lots Of Love,

Susie Cross, Reception Desk

IN A MINOR RETURN TO NORMALCY, THE USED CLOTHING COLLECTIONS ARE ONCE AGAIN AUTHORIZED.

A few simple rules;

1. We collect only good used clothing and shoes. We do not collect broken equipment and trash.

2. Donated clothing is to be placed in 13 gallon trash bags. These are generally white with red or yellow ties.

3. Do not use boxes.

4. Do not use the large clear plastic bags that housekeeping provides. These bags lack structural integrity and rip easily.

5. Do not stuff bags full. It makes them harder to handle and leads to ripping, creating more work for the resident volunteers.

6. Our resident volunteers are fellow residents; they are not “College Hunks with a Truck.” They give up their time to collect, load and unload your donated clothing. They also use their vehicles and their gas to deliver your clothing to the collection point. Act accordingly.

7. Bags should be tied securely, labeled as to contents and placed outside the resident’s door.

8. Call Paul Lannon (Ext. 3104) to arrange for a pickup.

Receipts are available on request.

MISSING LINKS

Do you find yourself at the weekend with time to watch a program that was aired on Channel 2 during the preceding week? Alas, you find the links in Coming Events on the resident website have been replaced with information for the week to come. Fear not! A pdf document has been attached to the bottom of Coming Events that provides some of those missing links. If you want to keep the links longer, you will have to save the pdf onto your own computer. Links to the CPE devotionals can be found on the website: www.ghbcresidents.org/Spiritual Life/Clinical Pastoral Education Program.

We all know Jedidia Ofosu Gyeabour Marfo (yep, 25 letters in his name) as a supervisor in Dining Services. As such, he trains and assists the staff and generally resolves any problems that arise. He has been with GHBC for the past six years and counting. Jedidia grew up in Kumasi, one of the largest metropolitan areas in Ghana. After graduating from the Armed Forces Senior High School there, he finished two years at the University of Ghana. Because his mother wanted him to join her and his two older siblings, he came to Virginia hoping to study clinical psychology at George Mason University. They would not accept his college credits from Ghana, however, and he decided to go to NOVA instead. Except for one final practical test, he has just completed the program to

become a dental hygienist. He was scheduled to take that test in DC, but it was canceled because of social distancing, and he now has to travel to Ohio to take it. He hopes to work for a while, complete a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene, and become a faculty member in a dental hygiene clinic. It is also his hope to get the dental clinic at GHBC actively running. In his rare spare time, Jedidia enjoys all forms of music. He plays the drums in church and also plays the keyboard and the trombone. He likes to read. Due to the love he has for the residents and his coworkers, he plans to continue working here as he launches his career as a hygienist.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT

INFORMATION FROM THE SPIRITUAL LIFE COMMITTEE

The Spiritual Life Committee is sponsoring discussions organized by Claudia Blake of the history of racist ideas in America as presented by Ibram X. Kendi. Readers may choose between one of these two versions:

Stamped From the Beginning: the Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America by Ibram X. Kendi, 600+ pages, $11.99 (Amazon)

Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You: A Remix of Stamped from the Beginning (above) by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi, 300+ pages, $11.99 (Amazon)

The same chapters and history is presented in more or less detail, depending upon your choice of books. There is a waiting list at libraries, so the book needs to be purchased or borrowed from a friend. Claudia will purchase extra copies to make available if necessary.

Discussions will cover one section each week for five weeks. Depending on participation numbers, discussions will be in-person or via Zoom. Please contact Claudia at [email protected] to let her know of your interest or for further information.

The Spiritual Life Committee, through its Senior Quest for Meaning series, earlier organized two panels aimed at helping residents examine and discuss the racial climate at the Goodwin House communities. If you missed seeing them or would like to see them again, you can find links on the resident website: www.ghbcresidents.org/council & committees/resident committees/spiritual life. There is a link to further information.

WEAR YOUR MASKS

We keep trying to emphasize the importance of using masks whenever you leave you apartments, as well as the fact that your wearing the mask protects others around you. You are protecting others in the community, and you depend on their mask-wearing to protect you.

Remember to wash your cloth mask every day you wear it. You can hand wash your cloth mask or just throw it in the washing machine. Hot water and soap will kill the virus.

Remember to wear your mask over your nose and mouth at all times when in public areas. Do not remove your mask for speaking.

MEET OUR NEW SOUS CHEF, JEROME DUDLEY

Who or what inspired you to start cooking?

At a young age I was inspired mostly by Anthony Bourdain’s realistic depiction of what kitchen life is.

From stories of being in professional kitchen, I learned about the hard work involved in cooking. Looking elsewhere for inspiration, high school also inspired me in the business of food when I started selling food for my entrepreneurship class in high school.

Describe your perfect meal, either one you have had or one you would like to have, or describe the meal of your dreams.

The meal of my dreams would be simple but executed tastefully and deliciously and this is all coming from a bistro in downtown Paris that is one place, of all the places in the world, where old world food is still delicious and

executed beautifully. Bistro or brasserie food has been one of my passion for years, same as modern American cuisine. What gets me is the simple execution and amazing taste and flavor it provides. The meal starts off with warm fresh bread and some salted French butter and followed by a cold asparagus soup with a dollop of lemon crème fraiche. For the main course, an herb-roasted chicken basted with garlic butter and thyme and with a nice crisp skin and herby and buttery meat with a side of “Pommes Frites,” fresh cut fries with herbs and garlic oil. To finish the meal would be nice warm beignets with chocolate sauce and ice cream. When done right, these would be heavenly to the senses.

What do you look forward to most about working at Goodwin house?

One of the things I look forward to the most is “Growth,” in not just me but with the team as well

Seeing my teammates grow side by side with me always bring me joy and excitement for the new day and challenges we can win ahead. I believe that growing together as a team makes success every day an easier goal to achieve.

VOICES FROM INSIDE THE GOODWIN HOUSE COCOON

THE MASK

“What did you say?” “I can’t hear you.” People move closer in, violating my 6-foot space. It’s not only the face that’s hidden by the mask, it seems. The mask also hides speech.

In a population with a high percentage of hard-of-hearing individuals, the mask is another obstacle to overcome. I’m talking more loudly these days, and more slowly, and pronouncing my words more carefully. The day of the quick quip, or fast aside is over. And I have also become hard-of-

hearing myself, as all speech is muffled through the mask.

“Excuse me, I can’t hear you. I don’t have my glasses on” is not altogether a joke, because lip-reading helps. Pity the deaf who rely on lip-reading alone. There are already efforts to create masks with clear plastic over the lips, so the hearing impaired can see the lips. We could all benefit from such a mask.

An Italian computer scientist using GPS technology tried to determine behavior around people who were wearing or not wearing a mask. It seems that the mask serves another function besides keeping germs in or out, or keeping hands away from the face. This researcher found that when he (and his fellow researchers) walked around without a mask, strangers tended to ignore the distancing rules. But when he walked wearing a mask, strangers tended to steer clear of him. The conclusion -- wearing a mask lessened transmission of germs by making people voluntarily stay away from each other.

I could be daring and take off my mask while keeping my distance, but then I would have to shout, thus spewing my droplets a greater distance. Considering the pros and cons of wearing a mask, until they find a cure or a vaccine for COVID-19, I’m resigned to the fact that the mask is here to stay. So I’ll wear a mask, even when Goodwin House releases us to the outside world.

And I guess I will just have to learn to slow down, speak up and enunciate more clearly. Toki Shimabukuro

LET’S GET FIT TOGETHER

8 MILLION STEPS!

Congratulations to all the Summer Stepping Local and State Park Program participants for taking over 8-million steps in only 6-weeks. We had 24 dedicated individuals who refused to let the Pandemic slow their roll. They made time to go for walks both inside and outside, take fitness classes, and sometimes just marched in place. Why? Because they had to get their numbers up.

We had more than one Resident make it all the way to Hungry Mother State Park in Virginia, which is over 322 walking miles away. That is more than 12 marathons!

For those who participated, we look forward to celebrating this wonderful achievement together. Please look for an email from Ali and Sherry with the details of the celebration.

Hungry Mother, one of the original six Virginia State Parks, has long been a favorite. It is known for beautiful woodlands and a placid 108-acre lake in the heart of the mountains. The park has a sandy beach with bathhouse, boat rentals, a boat launch and a universally accessible fishing pier.

Special Update:

Outdoor Fitness Circuit will be held outdoors as weather permits. On very hot and humid days, the group will move indoors. The group will meet as scheduled at the main entrance and decision to move indoors will be made the day of.
