~Bearing Fruit of the King Recap of the Week

This past week, we tackled the last 2 fruit of the

Spirit: gentleness (or meekness) & self-control. To

understand these characteristics of God, we dove

into the story of King Saul hunting down David

to do harm. Saul was anointed and crowned King

after Israel begged God for a king. He was given

everything he needed to do this work, being filled

with the Holy Spirit. But Saul never brought

himself to yield his life to the control and

authority of The Master, and he went his own

way. God then had David anointed as king, but

he had to WAIT to be crowned king because Saul

was alive. David had more than one opportunity

to take matters into his own hand and kill Saul

for the crown, but he never did because David

was “a man after God’s own heart.” He

recognized that God is the greatest treasure, and

he let go of everything else to hold fast to God &

His promises. He yielded his life to the control

and authority of His Master, just a wild stallion

does when tamed in gentleness and love by the

master horseman. Time and time again, David

practiced gentleness self-control towards Saul,

trusting that God, His Master was Good and in

control of all things, including when he was

crowned, not just declared, King.

The Importance of Building Godly Character PARENTING TIP:

One of the most important priority we can have as a parent is to build character in

our children. Character prepares our children for success in life and how to handle

disappointments. They learn to work hard, have initiative, diligence, perseverance with a

good attitude, integrity and other important character traits.

Building Godly character in your children is foundational for them to know God and

know His ways, with the hope that in the future, they will choose God and His ways

when they are on their own.

As parents, we have the privilege, opportunity and responsibility to raise a generation of

young people who have good, strong Christ-like character. We were chosen by God for

this job and are best suited for this job. Other than God, we know our kids better than

anyone else does, and we love them more. Even more important though is that fact that

God gave them to us. It’s our job to disciple them and help them become like Him. As

believers, God will equip and provide for us to pour His character into our kids through the

power and presence of His Spirit in us!

5 PRACTICAL WAYS YOU CAN BUILD GODLY CHARACTER IN

YOUR CHILDREN:

1. Get God’s Word into the hearts and minds of your children.

Godly character begins on the inside with a close relationship with the Lord, so it is

important that we teach our children God’s Word purposefully. We want them to have His

Word in their minds, so they will THINK His thoughts.

Thoughts lead to actions, which develop into habits, which then grow into

character. All of that started with the thoughts!

Simple ways to help our kids to think God’s thoughts: Read a few Bible verses together daily, and talk about how they apply to their lives. Help your kids develop the habit of reading God’s Word daily at a young age. Memorize Scripture together regularly. Sing Scripture songs together.

2. Train and correct the heart with Scripture.

Another simple way to get God’s Word into the hearts and minds of your children is by

using it for training and correcting their hearts. “God disciplines those He loves,” and it is

“His loving kindness that leads us to repentance” (Heb. 12:6, Rev. 3:19, Rom. 2:4).

It’s easy to look at wrong behavior and get frustrated because we have to stop what we

are doing to train and correct the child. The truth is that the wrong behavior isn’t an

interruption. Instead, it’s an OPPORTUNITY to take your kids to God’s Word and address

the heart issue with Bible answers and truths. We can expect kids to make mistakes and

look for those opportunities to show God & His character & His ways when we take the

time to correct and instruct our children in gentleness, self-control and love.

3. Provide Godly role models (yourself and others)

It’s true that children learn more from our walk, than they learn from our talk! In fact, our

children become like us, so we need to strive to be an example to them of Godly character.

Keep in mind that they are watching all the time. Without us saying a word, we are shaping

their character in either a positive or negative way.

Help your child choose people of Godly character to pattern their lives after. This includes

watch they watch, who they listen to, what posters they have on their walls and more.

You can give them Godly role models by: Researching what famous people your children admire believe and stand up for, how they

live and what their choices in life reflect. Reading Christian biographies together Spending time getting to know missionaries Introducing them to Godly people in your church

5. Have planned teaching times with character lessons.

One of the best ways to build Godly character in your children it to have daily character

lessons that teach your children the meaning of the character trait you are studying. Look

for Biblical examples, and practical ways to apply it to their daily lives.

6. Pray for them to have Godly character.

While teaching and training our children to grow in character, we need to work as

though it all depends on us and PRAY as though it all depends on God! It is our job

to faithful in teaching and training, while trusting Him to do a work in their hearts.

Praying is one of the most powerful things we can do as parents. When we pray God’s

Word back to Him for our children, we bring His power right into their lives.
