Recently a new patient commented on how they like coming to the offi ce just to learn.
I was happy to hear this as what I have been trying to promote over the last 26 years is the role of “doctor” as teacher.
Doctor comes from the latin word “docere” which means “to teach.”
My overall goal is that any information that I am able to share with my patients will be useful for them for years to come.
My website is fi lled with articles and newsletters that I have been writing over the last 20 years.
Someone once asked me if some of these articles are now outdated and I said ‘no’!
Naturopathic
medicine is really a common sense medicine built on a strong foundation of basic nutritional knowledge that doesn’t change. Sure there are many new herbs being used and new
knowledge regarding nutritional medicine but there are some basic principles that stand the test of time. This is where I start with every patient.
There are 40 micronutrients plus protein, carbohydrates and fats that everybody needs for optimal health. These include 15 minerals, 15 vitamins and essential fatty acids and amino acids.
All of these are inexpensive and defi cient in refi ned foods.
Sugary drinks are
the leading source of calories around 40 grams per serving.
Premature aging can be due to a defi ciency of these 40 micronutrients that lead to free radical formation and DNA damage.
These micronutrients improve the immune system, raise the good cholesterol HDL, lower Homocysteine (protein in the blood associated with infl ammation and diseases of aging) and improve mitochondrial functioning.
Multivitamins do not have adequate dosages of calcium,
magnesium, potassium and omega 3 essential fats.
To preserve itself in the face of these defi ciencies, the body develops diseases of aging.
The role of the gut health is integral to almost any health condition including the obesity epidemic.
Following the Laws of Nature are inherent in any Naturopathic Medical practice.
This includes: getting enough sleep, getting enough time outdoors in the sun, drinking enough good quality water, eating a Mediterranean type diet, proper
elimination of toxins from the body and time for peace and quiet.
I see my role as physician to help people build a strong foundation for their health and address these defi ciencies and to encourage them to build on this
foundation for life. If people maintain
their health program the number of complaints greatly reduces at which time I add to the foundation that has already been created.
This is where I add new remedies

J.R. RardonBlack Press
TELEGRAPH COVE — Local whale-watching businesses and biologists have heard too many reports of whales struck by boats and seen too many near-misses with their own eyes.
Now, they plan to fl ag potential offenders.
Utilizing the distinctive “Be Whale Wise” logo as a template, local whale-
watching businesses have designed and created fl ags that will alert other boaters that whales are in the vicinity and to take caution and reduce speed.
“We’re asking people who fl y this fl ag to put it up when they’re watching whales,” said Jim Borrowman of Orcella Expeditions. “If you’re out boating and you see this fl ag, it means you’re in the vicinity of whales. So please
slow down.”The fl ag employs a
bright yellow, orange and red circle with the tail fl uke of a whale. It mimics the logo used by Be Whale Wise, which shows how far boaters must remain from whales and which is recognized by Fisheries and Oceans Canada and NOAA Fisheries in the U.S.
The idea for the fl ag germinated during discussions between Borrowman and local biologist Jackie
Hildering fi ve or six years ago, as they sought a way to protect whales from increasing boat traffi c in area waters.
The fi rst fl ags, produced by June Brothers Tent and Awning in Victoria, were made last season. Borrowman spread the word this spring at a preseason meeting that drew 45 people from North Island whale-watching and kayak operators,

whale researchers,DFO offi cials and representatives fromthe Vancouver Marine Mammal Centre, OrcaLab, Strait Watchand Telegraph Cove’s Whale InterpretiveCentre. Since starting the fi rst recognizedcommercial whale-watching operationwith then-partnerBill Mackay in 1980,Borrowman has seendramatic growth in the number of peopleon the water seeking a close look at the killerwhales and humpbackwhales who swim inNorth Island waters.
He said word has
gotten out to private boaters that, to viewkiller whales, they should go where thewhale-watching boats are. Borrowman saidhe has seen thesepersonal craft come racing up to his ownboat on numerous occasions, sometimesmotoring right over the top of a travellingpod while oblivious tothe potential danger.
“There’s a lot ofpressure on us to get closer. Everyonewants to hug a whale,” Borrowman said. “We thought if we fl ew
a fl ag when we’re watching whales, thatpeople could see and investigate beforecoming up at high speed.”
On a recentexpedition in Johnstone Straitaboard his original whale-watchingboat, the Gikumi, Borrowman fl ewthe fl ag when hecame upon a pod oftransient killer whales. His former vessel, the Lukwa, sailed bythe new owners of Stubbs Island WhaleWatching, was also in
the area and fl ying the fl ag at the same time.
However, two pleasure craft couldbe seen zigging and zagging to get a closer look at thekiller whales and a humpback swimmingnearby.
“We’re trying tocontinually educate
people,” Borrowman said. “This is a long-term thing.”
The next phase ofthe education features laminated 8x10placards describing thefl ag and its meaning, which will be posted atarea marinas and boat launches.
“There’s new
people to the area and new boaters onthe water every year,” Borrowman said. “Thiswill go on as long as we live here.”

COMOX — “Painting is a solitary occupation,” says Coral Barclay. “You work by yourself every day. You have to like being alone and working on your own.”
But that will all change for Barclay
on the B.C. Day long weekend. From July 29 through August 1, she’s the featured guest artist at the annual Filberg Festival.
With more than 120 artisans, a variety of food vendors, kids’ activities and a cool music lineup fi lling the nine-acre waterfront park, the event has earned a reputation as one of the best outdoor festivals in Canada.
Visitors will fi nd Barclay in the Filberg Heritage Lodge, along with a selection of her landscape paintings. Her work is fi lled with light and colour, what she considers the key elements of a painting.
“As a visual artist, light has a direct impact on colour so I’m always searching for that magical moment of great light,” Barclay explains. “Light changes everything. If it’s fl at it doesn’t inspire me at all.”
What she is inspired by is nature. So she spends lots of time “rambling around” with her camera watching the way light interacts with plants, sky and water. Back in her studio, the photos are used as a reference
to spark the memory of the experience and then Barclay lets her imagination kick in.
Acrylics used to be Barclay’s medium of choice but a couple of years ago she switched to oils.
“I felt like it was time for a change. Maybe it had something to do with turning 50,” she says. “Oil is defi nitely more technical and more of a challenge. That’s part of what keeps me learning and interested in my craft.”
Barclay spends winters in Portland, Ore., and the summer months painting on Hornby Island. “I lived here for six years and love coming back,” she says. “I love painting the local area and my studio – an outfi tter’s tent – is open to the public so I get to meet people too. It’s very rewarding to get that direct feedback.”
Barclay paints for fi ve hours most days. “Each piece seems to have a life of its own,” she says. “I start a painting and it just takes off. I’m more interested in evoking a feeling or mood than a realistic image.”
Although a lot
of her work is large, several years ago she started painting what she calls “minis.” These range from six inches square to 6x12 inches.
“Minis can be a way for me to work out an idea for a larger painting,” she notes. “Or sometimes I just like to paint small. People like them because they’re easy to transport, especially if they’re travelling.
“And it’s an easy, affordable way for someone to get a piece of original art. ”
Barclay grew up in Lantzville in a small cabin by the sea and believes that location played a large part in her becoming an artist. She began drawing as a young child and always felt
that painting was her vocation. She obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of British Columbia and a Fine Arts Diploma at Malaspina College, now Vancouver Island University.
”Painting’s more challenging than most people realize,” Barclay says. “There’s a lot of repetitive movement involved and that can be hard on the body. And the technical aspect seems to get harder as you progress, I guess because you get more particular about your work.
“But the most diffi cult thing is to just put aside all the other stuff in your life and paint,” she adds. “Most of what I know I learned by working on my own.”

that are coming up in the research as being useful. In the case of cancer I encourage a life-long preventive program to prevent metastasis or recurrence.
Cancer cells are microscopic and no surgeon can “get it all”! Some jurisdictions in Canada are now providing on-going
patient centred support to cancer patients after they are deemed to be in remission. Naturopathic physicians have always emphasized preventive treatment for these types of patients to help avoid recurrence.
Therapies include detoxifi cation and antioxidant therapies.
Secondary to teaching is coaching so this is why I have created a “recipe” section to my website.
I add more than 12 recipes a year to the site. My aim is to create tasty and easy to prepare recipes that are wheat and dairy free.
Tasting is believing! As part of National Naturopathic Medicine Week (the
second week of May) we also offer a “Tasting Day” to prove to you that eating gluten and/or dairy free can be very tasty.
We offer free tasting of Verry Berry, cod liver oil and Greens First anytime of the year. There is a new website launched by our Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors: www.ndhealthfacts.org that provides further education on Naturopathic Medicine.
There are two new clinics in Canada, one in Ottawa and one in Victoria, being developed to offer Alternative Cancer Therapies along with standard Oncology
Care. Inspire Health has been established in Vancouver for many years and has been very successful to date. I will keep you posted when these other centres open.
In the meantime I have developed my offi ce as an “educational centre” and it is open any time during business hours for those of you who want to pop by and just read or fi nd out more about what Naturopathic Medicine can do for you.
Dr. Ingrid Pincott, Naturopathic Physician, has been practicing since 1985 and can be reached at 250-286-3655 or www.DrPincott.com
