Now Is The Time ForBlack Men To Stand Up

    and Speak OUT

    2 The Advocate July 24,

    The Gantt Report

The Gantt Report encourages all Black males to attend the second annual 1000 Man Rally on August 14-15,

in Quincy, Florida. Quincy is a predominately Black town about 30 miles north of Tallahassee, the capitol ci

Florida and site of the rst rally in 2008.

The theme of this years rally is Men Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace!

I support this event because it was s tarted from the ground up and not from the top down. The vision fo

event came from Minister Greg James who served over 13 years in prison. The idea is supported by former i

mates who desire to improve themselves and their lives by improving their commuinties and communitiy ins

    tions.

Dont get bent all out of shape because I said the word inmates. All of us have either been jailed or we ha

family members, friends or neighbors that have been behind bars. In fact, all African Americans have ancest

    that have been locked up.

Our people didnt come to America on the Mayower. We didnt sail here on a Carnival or Royal Caribbe

cruise ship. We rst arrived here on slave ships, handcuffed to each other in the worst of conditions. Back the

the handcuffs were called shackles. Men, women, children and babies tied together with iron restraints to comAmerica and other places to serve as slaves for the devilish you know what.

Anyway, back to the 1000 Man Rally, you have to know there are some very smart and talented people th

have served time. If you can make a living, buy things and pay bills without punching a clock, thats smart. I

can stand up and speak out for what you believe in without fear of the consequences, thats courageous. If yo

can nd God and share Gods truth with the poor, the meek and the powerless and help others stay out of tro

thats worthwhile. Those are some of the ways to describe many of our and the worlds heroes that are now f

    inmates.

All of us have been impacted in some form by having a family member, friend or negihbor that have been

behind bars and many others have been there and want to keep it on the down low. Even the editor of the Ga

Report has been in jail so I have a special fondness for brothers and sisters that have overcome mistakes that

    jail terms

Minister James heads an organization called Reclaiming the Land Ministries, Inc. and speaks about the eve

    purpose.

This is a call for our men to speak not just with words but actions, said Minister James, and become th

galvanizing force for restoration of homes, our communities, our state and ultimately our nation.

Last years key speaker was former National Baptist Convention Chair and former inmate Rev. Henry LyThis year, a key speaker will be Rev. Billy Neal Moore, a former inmate that was spared only seven hours be

his scheduled execution. Rev. Moore once spent 16 and years on death row but is now a world famous aut

and speaker. The National Exhoodus Council (see www.thenec.net), an organization of former inmates whos

motto is Serving our country after serving our time, will be joining the 2009 1000 Man Rally. Also, on Au

gust 15th, Minister Greg James will be affrimed as the National Exhoodus Council chair person for the State

    Florida.

Chairpersons for the 2009 1000 Man Rally are Florida State Rep. Alan Williams and Quincy Mayor Pro T

Derrick Elias. Co-chairpersons are Gadsden County Sheriff Morris Young and Gadsden County Commission

    Chair Eugene Lamb.

Minister James says, We must become the voice for our children in jail, those who have dropped out of

school, those who are sleeping in substandard housing, those who are joining gangs and those whose vocabu

has become a foreign language to us because their teacher is Hip Hop. Young Black males are demanding th

Black men stand up. We must speak now!

If you cant join The Gantt Report and others at the rally, you can contribute to the events success or hav

business sponsor some event activities. For details about the 1000 Man Rally and how you can participate an

assist, you can reach the event coordinators at 1000 Man Rally, RTL/ICC, Box 6356, Tallahassee, Florida 32

    850-210-8837 phone; 850-875-9875 fax.

If you can get a million of us to attend an inauguration party, we ought to be able to get a few thousand to

up for progress, equal rights and justice!

With your help, this event can be spread nationwide and even worldwide. Dont act like Patrice Lumumb

Steve Biko, Nelson Mandela and other Black world leaders didnt know what a ja il cell looked like and how

munity activists around the globe have been incarcerated for wrong reasons or on bogus charges.

Visit the web site of the 1000 Man Rally at www.1000manrally.com and join together with Black men an

of all races, creeds and color that are destined to make their lives, families and communities better.

BOSTON Prosecutors dropped a disorderly conduct

charge Tuesday against who was arrested after forcing

his way into his own house in what he and other blacks

    say was an outrageous but

    all-too-common example of

    how police treat them.

    Prominent black scholar

Henry Louis Gates Jr. , 58,

    director of Harvards W.E.B.

    Du Bois Institute for African

    and African American

    Research and a documentary

    host, was arrested July 16

    after he returned home from

    China, where he working on

    his latest lm.

    When he got home he

    realized his front door was

jammed and he couldnt getinto the house he rents from

    Harvard. He asked his driver

    for help.

    A female neighbor called

    police, saying she saw two

    black males with backpacks

on the porch, and that one

    of whom was wedging his

shoulder into the door as if

he was trying to force entry,

    according to a police report.

    Sgt. James Crowley

of the Cambridge Police Department responded to this

report of a burglary and when he got Gates was already

inside and on the phone with the real estate company that

manages the property. He had gotten in through the back

door and shut off the alarm, he said.

Crowley saw him in the house, entered and ap-

proached him and demanded identication. Police said

Gates was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct

after he yelled at Crowley, accused him of racial bias and

    refused to calm down.

But Gates lawyer, fellow Harvard scholar Charles

    Ogletree, tells a differ-

    ent story. According to

    Ogletree, Gates showed

    Crowley both his drivers

    license and Harvard ID

    both with his photo

    and repeatedly asked

    for the name and badge

    number of the ofcer,

    who refused. He says that

    Crowley was then leaving

    the house and Gates fol-

    lowed the ofcer outside

    onto the front porch, still

    demanding Crowleys

identication, and it wasthere that Crowley ar-

    rested him.

    Gates said that he

    doesnt know the woman

    who called police, Lucia

    Whalen, and that she

    was probably

    doing the right

    thing. Whalen

    didnt respond

    to Associated

    Press requests

    for comment.

President Obama was asked about Gates

arrest at the end of a nationally televised

news conference on health care and began his

response by saying Gates was a friend and he

    didnt have all the facts.

But I think its fair to say, No.

1, any of us would be pretty an-

gry, Obama said. No. 2, that the

    Cambridge police acted stupidly

    in arresting somebody when there

was already proof that they were in

their own home. And No. 3 -- what

I think we know separate and apart

from this incident -- is that there

is a long history in this country of

    African-Americans and Latinos

    being stopped by law enforcement

    disproportionately, and thats just

    a fact.

The Cambridge Police Department redoff a scathing retort, calling the Presidents

remarks misdirected, and made worse by

suggesting somehow this case should remind

us of a history of racial abuse by law enforce-

    ment.

Meanwhile, Crowley said he was disap-

pointed by the Presidents comments, adding:

I support the president of the United

States 110 percent. I think he was way off

base wading into a local issue without knowing all the

facts as he himself stated before he made that comment,

Crowley told WBZ-AM. I guess a friend of mine would

    support my position, too.

Bill Cosby waded in on the controversy, saying

was shocked by the Presidents comments, saying th

if he were President and someone wanted to make a

altercation of this sort a racial issue, he would have

    his mouth shut.

The city of Cambridge called the arrest regretta

and unfortunate, and police and Gates agreed that d

ping the charge was a just resolution though not o

that quelled the anger of one of Americas top acade

Prosecutors subsequently decided to drop all ch

against Gates. Gates, though, is still t to be tied.

Im outraged, Gates said in extensive commen

made to TheRoot.com, a Web site he oversees. I ca

believe that an individual policeman on the Cambrid

police force would treat any African-American male

    way, and I am astonished that this happened to me;

more importantly Im astonished that it could happe

to any citizen of the United States, no matter what trace.

There are 1 million black men in the prison sys

tem, and on Thursday I became one of them, he sa

I would sooner have believed the sky was going to

from the heavens than I would have believed this co

happen to me. It shouldnt have happened to me, an

    shouldnt happen

    anyone.

    Gates said he

    harbors more ang

    toward the ofce

    who arrested th

    black man he sa

    and arrested him

    trumped-up cha

    He said he w

    an apology from

    Crowley, but Cro

    says he isnt bitin

    Meanwhile, a

    thorities dropped

    charges against O

    prominent blacks

    called the confro

    tion a clear exam

    racial proling.

    Under any a

    the resolution.

The charges have been dropped, but the stain

remains. ... Humiliation remains, Jackson said. Th

incidents are so much of a national pattern on race.

Gates joined the Harvard faculty in 1991 and ho

one of 20 prestigious university professors positio

at the school. He also was host of African America

Lives, a PBS show about the family histories of pr

nent U.S. blacks. In 1997, he was named by Time m

zine as one of the 25 most inuential Americans.

    (Washington, DC) Con-

    gresswoman Corrine Brown

    today afrmed her support

for Supreme Court nomi-nee Sonia Sotomayor, and

    blasted Gov. Charlie Crist

    for his declared opposition

    to her nomination.

    Judge Sonia Sotomayor

    has a compelling personal

    story and a distinguished

    judicial record, and has

    dedicated her career toward

    ensuring that every Ameri-

can receives a full and fair

hearing in a court of law,

    Congresswoman Brown

    said. Her outstanding

    intellectual achievements

as a student, lawyer, andjudge make her one of the

    most qualied nominees in

    American history, and lead

    Floridians of all parties to

    believe she would be an

    outstanding Supreme Court

    Justice.

    Congresswoman Brown

added that in a state such as

    Florida, which has a Latino

    population of nearly 21%, it

    is especially important that

    the courthouse doors be per-

ceived as open to all comers.

    For far too long, African-

Americans and Hispanicsalike have been ignored by

    the Supreme Court. Chief

    Justice Roberts recent re-

    marks questioning the con-

    stitutionality of the Voting

    Rights Act only underscore

    the degree to which the

    interests of minorities are

    consistently minimized.

    Judge Sotomayor would

    add an important and unique

voice to this court and a

    desperately needed one.

    Governor Crist, she

added, had cast his lot with

the extreme right wing ofthe Republican Party in a

    blatant effort to win their

    support for his Senate race

and in so doing, has em-

    braced the national partys

    hostility toward Hispanic

    Americans. For the Gover-

nor of Florida to cast his lot

    with the Rush Limbaughs

    and Newt Gingriches of

    the world in opposing

    the nomination of this

    eminently qualied Latina

    woman is shameful, Rep.

    Brown said. How he can

reject her candidacy withone hand and then reach

    out for Hispanic support

with the other I dont know.

But I do know this: Florida

    voters and the members of

    our Hispanic community

    are smart, very smart, and

    they will see through the

    governors hypocrisy.

    Fourteen percent of the

    2008 electorate in Florida

    was comprised of Hispanic

    voters, Congresswoman

    Brown added, including

    Judge Sotomayors mother,

who lives in south Florida, and Gov. Crist has now

    turned his back on those

    voters. Judge Sotomayors

    experiences and understand-

ing of the law will make her

a strong voice for fairness on

    the Supreme Court; we all

    know that. Im just sorry

    that the Judges mother has

    to see the embarrassment

    that our governor is bring-

    ing to our state.

Thanksto the winning recipeof a voice that stirsthe soul and boy-

Born in Philadelphia and raised in Orlando, Florida,Kevin Cossom rst found his love and talent for song inchurch. Kevins mother- an educator and founder of aperforming arts academy- was her sons rst supporter, encouraging him to perform his rst solo at the tender ageof three. He later joined his rst group, a gospel act hismother assembled, at the age of six. However, the youngsinger/songwriter didnt realize that he wanted to makemusic his life until he was 14. Once the high school-aged

Kevin met Rashad Tyler, his manager, thats when thingsbegan to click for the young upstart.

It didnt take long for the hungry rookie to get put on. In2004, he was featured on his rst song, Lloyd Banks Kar-ma. Thanks to fellow Orlando sons/producers The Runners,

Kevin followed that up with his rst songwriting credit whenhe penned the R. Kelly hook on Young Jeezys Go Getta. He has also been featured on albums from Beanie Sigel,Rick Ross, Chamillionaire, Trey Songz and Rocko, amongothers. For me, songwriting was a way in I thought thatother songwriters didnt take me seriously because I wasjust placing hip-hop hooks, says Kevin.

Theyre taking him seriously nowin fact it was thoseguest appearances that scored Kevin an audience withGrammy award winning producer Danja (Britney Spears,Mariah Carey, Justin Timberlake). I went to work withDanja in Miami as a songwriter for a girl group he wasworking with, says Kevin. It was like instant chemistry.

Col. 4:1 Bosses, grant to your workers jus-tice and fairness, knowing that you too have aMaster in heaven. -The Message

The way you treat others is the wayyou will be treated. But be careful

not to mistreat others because youhave been mistreated! There is a

spiritual pattern there. If you have been hurt, neglected, misused,

mistreated, etc. be careful, because it is very easyfor that spirit to manifest itself in you. If it does, you will begin to treat others with the same un-fairness that you have experienced and you maynot even know it.

Be fair in how you deal with others. Es-pecially if you are over people on your job, inyour home, or in the church of God. We shouldnever take our position that we have over some-one and use it for an occasion to unjustly lordover a person and mistreat them because of ouremotional state.

God wants us to use our position that wehave over someone to serve them. You are theboss or in charge already and your position haspower without you giving it power.

There are even corrupt people in positionsthat God still works through because the positionhas power, not the person. King Saul was evil, but God warned David not to touch him becausehe was King, or in other words, the position thathe had needed to be respected.

Your position over people has poweralready. So it is not necessary to exercise your power over people and abuse it just to workout your own insecurities and issues. No matterhow you have been mistreated or what you aredealing with, you can counteract it by showinglove, kindness, and fairness to those that you areresponsible for.

You see, Jesus taught us to repay evil withkindness and we should never take out our painon people. You may not like a person, or feelthat certain people dont deserve your kindness, but you have no idea how they got that way, orwhether or not they are dealing with the samethings you are facing.

So, that makes it our responsibility to showGods love to them at all costs. When we aregoing through, thats when its time to sow love! When we are suffering, thats when its time to

sow mercy. When we are being mistreated, thats when

its time to sow fairness. When we are beingpersecuted, thats when its time to sow kind-ness and humility.

Remember, you reap what you sow andsowing the right thing can cause you to reapyour way out of your present state.

In the article Quick 10 Dating Check-list: Ten Things to Do to Get Ready to DateAgain, June 2009, I bring up the subject ofroadblocksor those things that are keep-ing you from getting out therephysicallyor emotionallyto nd someone to shareyour life.

Because when we are hesitant to dateagain, we tend to have two categories ofissues: Excuses (which will be addressedin another article) are the untruths we tellourselves as to why we wont be able to ndlove. On the other hand, roadblocks are thereal dealthe real reason(s) we are gun shyabout taking the risk for romance.

Identifying and overcoming roadblocksWhile theres a range of roadblocks as

vast as those stumbling over them, many is-

sues t into the following categories. Readthe list below with an open heart and hone inon those most applicable for you.

Roadblock: Youre insecure about howto act

Less like a roadblock, more like a detourthe size of a small continent, insecurity is themack daddy of all obstacles. In this form, itcenters on not knowing how to act in a datingsituation, not knowing how to meet people,or not knowing what to do should you startseeing someone. If you havent dated in adecadeor even in a couple yearsthis is avery valid concern.

Reality: Sure courtship changes, butthere are easy ways to get up to speed (seeReadying Yourself for Romance Part III:Brushing Up on Behavior, December 2008).More importantly, youre far from alone! And

being out of the dating scene while raisingkids or focusing on your career is endear-ing and makes you human. So rather than

pretending to be up on every dating practice, cop to not knowing. Fessing up to your un-familiarity with recent romance can be a realicebreaker and create a bond with someonewho has been doing the same.

Roadblock: Youre insecure about yourappearance or age

Reality: In the article, Christian Singles:Tips for Overcoming Insecurity, June 2009,I discuss the difference between physical at-tractiveness and physical attraction as well asother tips for conquering insecurity. Whenit comes to appearance, more than anything,

confidence and carry-ing yourself in a waythat suggests a level ofcomfort with your bodyis sexy. Being able tolaugh, having integrity, and believing that youare a catch are reallythe keys.

With regard toaging, everyone getsolder. But with agecomes wisdom and astronger sense of self.Anyone who wouldonly want to be withsomeone youngerasopposed to someone attheir own level of lifeexperienceis shallowand superficial. Andthat should be a turnoffto you.

    Roadblock: Youretoo picky

This is the case ofthe man or woman whowants perfectionbut for-gets about falling in love. If this is you, youdont bother dating because you feel youllnever nd someone who is well-off, attrac-tive, kind, Christian, and free from baggageor obligations.

Reality: Unfortunately, you probablywont. But you are forgetting to focus on

the X Factorthat special something thatcauses you to fall for a person, regardless ofwhether they meet every item on your criteriachecklist. The better news is that you donthave to settle; because every day people meettheir soul mates, partners who come in a formthey never would have expectedbut who

blow them away just the same. Suddenly, living on lessor the fact that he has fourkidsdoesnt seem to matter. In fact, it mayeven be fun.

Roadblock: You think you dont deserveto nd love

This is a biggie. Especially if your fam-ily of origin or past partners have made youfeel less than or guilty for not succeeding inthe romance arena, this can subconsciouslystall you.

Reality: As a child of God, you deserve

happiness. If this is you, stop and let thissink in. Whatever may have been your sinsor shortcomings in the past, we all have them.Punishing yourself by forgoing love is notgoing to accomplish anythingexcept tomake you even more miserable and less the

positive person people want to be around.

    Roadblock: You worry about lookingdesperate

You might worry others will view youas desperate. And this may cause you to actaloof, as if you dont care about meetingsomeone at all. Unfortunately, you come offas if you dont care about meeting someoneat allwhich is not very inviting for potentialsuitors.

Reality: There is absolutely no shshowing interest in someoneor beingested in nding someone to share yoAs long as you dont become consumtake what you have for granted, being vable is, again, endearing.

Roadblock: You fear failure andhurtAgain. Whether you are 29 or

youve been hurt in the past, youreably not in a rush to risk again.

Reality: It may sound grim, but physical impossibility to nd love wtaking some risk. Think about it: Evenfall in love, get married, and ride off isunset, there are no guarantees of etEver. Therefore, your best bet is to recthe inherent risk in the rewardand to do it anyway.

Roadblock: You fear rejectionSome people never put themselv

there because they worry that someonnot want them.

Reality: Its a fact: Someone wshow interest in you. Actually, a n

of people wont. Because after all, love is to some degree a numbers gamebeing said, eventually, someone will. the one you want wants you, it will bworth the wait.

The nal wordIf you have been considering

love another shot but unable to opentake action, one of the rst steps is to gabout whats holding you back. Becyou dont know whats tripping you ucan you ever overcome it? Read theroadblocks above and consider possibers. With each, youll recognize thereality that makes dating again mucdaunting.

Hospitals, group practices, nursing facilities, medicaldevice makers and otherhealthcare companies

agree -- by a near two-to-one margin, they favor President Barack Obamashealthcare reform initiatives.

The President hopes to ensure near-universal health coverage, improvequality, lower costs, support techno-logical development and research, andimprove preventative care. And mostmiddle-market healthcare companies -- those with annual revenues of $25 mil-lion to $1 billion -- believe that Obamas

On the other hand, only 28 percentof executives want to see Medicare andMedicaid reimbursements changed.

Still, the healthcare industry re-mains positive about its prospects, even

The healthcare industry has severalreasons to feel hopeful. Unlike manyother industries, people cannot opt outof healthcare when they need medicalservice. Judge Greg Math

he World recently celebrated the 91st

birthday of Nelson Mandela , free-

dom ghter and former President of

South Africa. Celebrities came to toast his

life and work, starring in concert tributes that

paid homage to his legacy. While Mandela

is denitely worthy of praise, Im sure hed

much rather the efforts put into planning the

celebrations have been put toward reducing

AIDS deaths in sub-Sahara Africa, where his

    people are suffering greatly.

Doctors Without Borders, an organiza-tion of healthcare professionals who provide

critical medical support to impoverished and

war torn nations, reports that a shortage of

drugs needed to treat AIDS in six African

countries will eventually lead to the loss of

thousands of. At last count, over 30 million

people across the world were living with the

HIV virus that causes AIDS; 2/3 of these

people are in sub-Sahara Africa with Zim-

    babwe, Congo, Malawi, Uganda, Guinea

and South Africa being the most affected.

Mandelas native South Africa has the high-

est rates of HIV infections in world.

The shortage in medication can be attrib-

uted largely to the fact that those who make

funding commitments in the past dont actu-

ally meet them. Between $3 and $4 billion

in promised funding has not made its way to

    Doctors Without Borders and nations

the globe that have promised to help

havent made good on their word.

One of the few perhaps the

bright spot in the Bush Administ

$15 billion was pledged over ve ye

ght the global AIDS epidemic. Desp

of the money the U.S. has funnele

ghting the disease on the continent

can be done. President Obama has pro

to expand Bushs efforts by $1 billion we havent seen the funds from this co

    ment made available.

Fighting AIDS in Africa must be m

    priority. African nations debilitated by

nations such as Britain, France, Po

and the U.S. have beneted greatly

the continent of Africa having rap

generation. It is only just that, in thi

of great need, these countries give ba

    expanding their commitment to ght

    they fulll those promises.

enry Louis Gates Jr. has a bache-lors degree in history from YaleUniversity. He holds a doctorate

in English from Cambridge University. He also holds more than 50 other honor-ary degrees.

But as a black man in America, Gatesalso holds a place in the collective fearsof many white folks. And because of thosefears, none of Gates pieces of paper couldinsulate him from the one that litters the

lives of far too many other black males. That one piece of paper being an ar-

rest report. Recently Gates, one of thiscountrys top scholars of African-Ameri-can history, saw his life imitate the realitythat governs the lives of scores of other

black males.Upon returning to his home in Cam-

bridges Harvard Square from China, where he had been working on a docu-mentary, Gates found that the door was

jammed. Gates told The Washington Postthat he and his driver, who was dressed ina black uniform, pushed for 15 minutesuntil they got the door open.

But somehow, a passerby didnt see auniformed driver or a middle-aged blackman with a cane. She didnt see a scholaror a worker. All she saw were two blackmen who, by dint of being black, had to

be up to no good. Before Gates knew it, a police ofcer

was at his door, demanding that he stepoutside. Gates refused, but did provide theofcer with his Harvard ID and driverslicense.

That should have been enough to sat-isfy the ofcer that Gates wasnt a burglar. That should have been the end of it.

Sadly enough, it was just the begin-ning.

The ofcer, it seems, didnt like itthat Gates, this uppity Negro, wanted his

name and badge number. Didnt like it thatGates called him a racist and allegedlysmarted off to him by saying, Ill speakwith your mama outside.

So after summoning a posse of other police ofcers he apparently neededthem to help him take down the unarmed,150-pound, 58-year-old man he arrestedGates for disorderly conduct.

Thats a charge that police tend totweak into something terrifying if the

person theyre dealing with isnt as def-erential as they would like them to be.In fact, this part of the cops own reportsays it all.

While I was led to believe that Gateswas lawfully in the residence, I was quitesurprised and confused with the behav-ior he exhibited toward me, the ofcerwrote.

Surprised? Confused? For comingonto a mans porch and arresting him after

he proved that he wasnt a criminal? The way I see it, the only thing that

had this cop confused was the notion ofwhite privilege something that, whencoupled with police power, tends to mu-tate into a life all its own.

Its the notion that led this police of-cer to continue to question Gates whohas since been released even after he hadthe information he needed to dispel anynotions of a supposed break-in.

Its the notion that made the ofceroblivious as to why someone like Gates,a world-renowned scholar, would be upsetabout being badgered over a misunder-standing that emerged from suspicions ofhim being a burglar.

Most of all, its the notion that a blackman like Gates doesnt even deserve thedignity of being left alone in his ownhome or on his own premises if he doesntconform to a police ofcers standards ofdeference.

No matter that it isnt against the lawto yell at a cop.

Could Gates have handled the situa-tion better? Perhaps. But I dont believeit was on Gates to do that. I believe it wason the cop to walk away and leave himalone after he provided the informationhe requested.

But this is America. This is a placewhere many people in authority care more

about order than justice especially whenit comes to black males. This is a placewhere many folks believe that black menare to be broken, not nurtured lest theyget too high and mighty.

As Gates just learned, no black man isimmune from that sort of indignity nomatter who they are.

And no matter how many pieces ofpaper hang on their walls.

Gates Real Crime? NotDeferring to White Privilege

I am disappointed to learn that the people who run government in Washington hfailed to provide a solution to the health care crisis in this country.

Like many people in America, Im directly impacted by this crisis on a daily baWe pay over $600 monthly for health insurance for me and my husband. We e

have $2,500 deductibles each year, and a twenty percent copayment. When we were both hospitalized last year, we paid $15,000 out of pocket in ad

to the over $7,000 in premium. This $22,000 does not include the cost of the drugs we now have to take to mai

our health, which cost over $1,000 last year. Many people have to pay a lot more drugs, but one of the benets of insurance is that the insurer pays most of the cost drugs.

Im still paying some of my doctors bills. Youd never believe how many of the

there are whenever youre hospitalized.Whenever Ive contemplated dropping the insurance coverage because of the c

one look at my husbands hundred thousand dollar hospital bill before insurance cucharges and paid their portion has quickly changed my mind.

President Obama made a reasonable request that Congress provide him with letion to sign before the summer recess. That they have failed to do so, when there igreater issue before them is unconscionable.

I hope that every working person dependent on their employers health insurancoverage would understand that as soon as they lose their job, they lose their healthinsurance. Forget COBRA. Its priced so that no one who really needs it can afformost companies. Once everyone recognizes how vulnerable they are, maybe then will begin to put pressure on their Congressperson and Senator to get the job done

    we elected them to do.

NEW YORK (NNPA) -When seven Black journalistsare invited to y on Air ForceOne with the president, youknow theres been a dramaticchange in the White House. Moreover, the journalists hadan exclusive roundtable inter-view with President Obama, and he was as accommodatingas the commodious surround-ings.

For more than twentyminutes on a flight fromAndrews Air Force Base toKennedy Airport in NewYork where he was sched-uled to address the NAACPscentennial convention July16, Obama elded a range ofquestions.

When Kevin Chappell, asenior reporter at Ebony, men-tioned disparaging comments

by Michael Steele, chair of theRepublican National Commit-tee, Obama said, I think Mr.Steele should focus on theRepublican Party.

What the president choseto focus on at the momentwas entrepreneurship andurban affairs, and we must

particularly target communi-ties most in need.

Equally important to theObama administration is theissue of healthcare and hetold CynthiaGordy of Es-sence maga-zine that it iscritical that weclose some ofthese gaps inhealth care forall Americans,

but particular-ly for Blacksand Latinos, where theincidence ofHIV/AIDS isdisproportionately high.

As the veritable flyingWhite House touched down,Obama elaborated on healthcare reform in response toa query from BET.comsPamela Gentry concerningthe impact of his plans onAfrican-Americans and thesingle-payer option. Wedont have a nal bill yet,he began, And as Ive said

before, there are countrieswhere single-payer plans haveworked well, but we have atradition of an employer-

based health care systemif people are happy with theirhealth care, we dont want tochange it.

But for those who donthave health care becausetheir employer doesnt offerit, then they have an option,

Obama added. And we areconfident that the bill we

produce will provide a levelof subsidy that will guaranteeaffordable health care for allAmericans.

With the NAACP on hisagenda, as a reporter with theAmsterdam News, I wantedto know the extent to whichhe would deal with race rela-tions, reminding him of a re-cent comment by Julian Bond, chairman of the NAACPs

board. While Obamas daugh-ters can y on Air Force One,little Black girls in the suburbsof Philadelphia are bannedfrom a swimming pool, Bondobserved.

Obviously, this is a re-minder that because of myelection that racism is nolonger an issue in America, and that is not true, Obamaasserted.

What needs to be doneto eradicate the racial dispar-ity, he continued, promisingto address this issue duringhis speech at the NAACP,was to improve substan-dard schoolsto focus oneconomic parity, economicdevelopment and access tohigher education.

    Derek Dingle, editor-in-

chief of Black Enterprise, keyed his question to thecondition of small businessesand to what degree theycould expect support fromthe Obama administration.

First of all, Obama said,we are focusing on small

    businesses already.

The Small BusinessAdministration (SBA) hasincreased its guarantees interms of lending and it has

been much more aggressivein trying to fill the gap as

private lending contracted. He recounted a recent meet-ing with minority automo-

    bile dealers to discuss theirplight.

And the SBA is one ofthe primary tools to make surethose minority dealers are ableto get the money they need tooperate a show room. It was

a point that was claried byValerie Garrett, one of hischief aids at the roundtable.

Obama believed that themain problem confrontingsmall and minority busi-nesses was not so much thelack of capital, despite itscritical importance, but theoverall dismal shape of theeconomy.

Foreign policy andAfrica were among severalissues posed by April Ryanof American Urban Radio, and the president listenedintently.

In terms of foreignpolicy, thats one of the rea-sons I just came back fromGhana, he stated, and thatwas to focus attention on thefact that Africa was not just aside note in our foreign policy,

but a central concern of ouradministration.

The encouragement ofeconomic development andgood governance are amongsome of the key points in

providing aid to African na-tions, Obama stressed, andhe mainly reiterated a policyhe outlined during his speech

    before the Ghanaian parlia-ment.

Commentator RolandMartin of CNNhad the finalquestion and hetouched on theissue of vouch-ers and educa-tion, whichthe presidentagreed was themost importantissue for the Af-rican- Americancommunity.

If wecan close theachievementgap, then a

big chunk of the economicinequality is diminished,Obama noted. We have got toget our kids up to speed. Now,how do we do that? Betterteachers, greater accountabil-ity, more resources combinedwith more reform.

He then invoked hisSecretary of Education ArneDuncan and applauded his

    push for more aggressivereforms.

We had been on theground for 15 minutes andgradually he was surrounded

by his aids, beckoning him fordeparture to the next stop in

New Jersey and then on to theNAACP where much of whathe shared with the reporterswould be revisited with gustoat the Hilton.

WASHINGTON - TheU.S. Department of Laborreminds employers andemployees that the federalminimum wage will increaseto $7.25 Friday, July 24. Withthis change, employees whoare covered by the federalFair Labor Standards Act(FLSA) will be entitled to

pay no less than $7.25 perhour.

    This administration is

committed to improving thelives of working familiesacross the nation, and theincrease in the minimumwage is another importantstep in the right direction, said Secretary of LaborHilda L. Solis. This well-deserved increase will helpworkers better providefor their families in theface of todays economicchallenges. I am especially

    pleased that the change will

benefit working women, who make up two-thirds ofminimum wage earners.

This increase is thelast of three provided bythe enactment of the Fair

Minimum Wage Act of2007, which amendedthe FLSA to increase thefederal minimum wage inthree steps: to $5.85 perhour effective July 24, 2007;to $6.55 per hour effectiveJuly 24, 2008; and now to$7.25 per hour effective July24, 2009. The latest changewill directly benet workersin 30 states, where the stateminimum wage is currently

at or below the federalminimum wage or there isno state minimum wage. Itwill also benet workers inthe District of Columbia, where the minimum wage isrequired to be $1 more thanthe federal minimum wage.

A family with a full-timeminimum wage earner wouldsee its monthly incomeincrease by about $120. The

benets are not just for full-time workers. About half of
