EUCHARISTIC ADORATION When coming into Christ’s Divine Presence , we find ourselves becoming silent within. Silence is an affirmation of His Divinity . Silence is an important ingredient of the spiritual journey. We see this clearly in the life of Jesus. Many of the major events of Christ’s life took place when He went off by Himself to pray to His father. If Jesus needed silence, so do we. Visit our Adoration Chapel. It provides a setting of peaceful silence that enables our relationship with Christ to be taken to new levels of depth and spiritual maturity. All are welcome!

The Weeds and the Wheat Can true humility and compassion exist in our words and in our eyes unless we know we too are capable of any act? —St. Francis of Assisi [1] Jesus uses a number of images that I

llustrate the tension between good and evil. They seem to say this world is a mixture of different things, and unless you learn how to see deeply, you don’t know which is which, and you don’t notice that God allows both good and bad to grow in the same field (Matthew 13:24-30). When a student asks Jesus if he should pull out the weeds, Jesus says to “let them both grow together until the harvest” (13:30). Then, at the end of time, God will decide what is wheat and what is a weed. In a certain way, he is saying it is none of our business to fully figure it out. This is really quite risky of God—and it takes tremendous courage on our part to trust God and ourselves here. We are all a mixture of weeds and wheat and we always will be. As Martin Luther put it, we are simul justus et peccator. We are simultaneously saint and sinner. That’s the mystery of holding weeds and wheat together in our one field of life. It takes a lot more patience, compassion, forgiveness, and love than aiming for some illusory perfection that is usually blind to its own faults. Acknowledging both the wheat and weeds in us keeps us from thinking too highly of ourselves and also from dismissing ourselves as terrible. To avoid cynicism and negativity, you have to learn to accept and forgive this mixed bag of reality that you are—and everyone else is, too. If you don’t, you’ll likely become a very angry person. To accept the weeds doesn’t mean that you say, “It’s okay to be ignorant and evil.” It means you have some real wisdom about yourself. You can see your weeds and acknowledge when you are not compassionate or caring. You have to name the weed as a weed. I’m not perfect; you’re not perfect; the church is not perfect; America is not perfect. If we must have perfection to be happy with ourselves, we have only two choices: We can blind ourselves to our own evil (and deny the weeds), or we can give up in discouragement (and deny the wheat). It takes uncommon humility to carry both the dark and the light side of things. The only true perfection available to humans is the honest acceptance of our imperfection. This is precisely what Divine Perfection can help us do; only God in us can love imperfect and broken things. By ourselves, we largely fail. (continued next column)

Learning how to love—which is our life’s project—is quite simply learning to accept our messy reality. If you love anyone, then you have learned to accept them despite their faults. You see a few things you’d like to change in your partner, your children, yourself. By the Largeness of God within you, you are able to trust that the good is deeper than the bad, and usually well hidden. This is probably why so many of Jesus’ parables are about hiddenness, seeking, and finding. Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM

We have had few problems with it and are hoping that we can get it working smoothly soon. We are looking for

people to help with this, so that we can offer this for weddings and funerals. If you would be interested, email me at [email protected]

I want to thank everyone who uses the monthly “Capital Improvements” enve-lope. We are slowly building up some funds to help with the needs in all our

buildings and grounds. In a plant this size there is “always something” in need of repairing or replacing. There are a few “big ticket” items----but we will con-tinue to evaluate as we go forward.

The divided heart Reflecting on the years he spent in labour camps, Alexander Solzhenitsyn has this to say: I learnt one great lesson from my years in prison camps. I learnt how a person becomes evil and he becomes good. Gradually I came to realize that the line which separates good from evil passes not be-tween states, or between classes, or between political parties, but right through every human heart. Even in hearts that are overwhelmed by evil, one small bridge-head of good is retained. And in the best of all hearts, there remains and unuprooted small corner of evil.

The West Genesee School PTA/PTO District Council is once again holding a School Supply Drive for the 2017-18 school year. Last year we helped well over 150 families with school supply assistance and we are asking the parishioners of St. Joseph’s Church for their help. The list of teacher request-ed supplies seems to grow longer each year and many families have several children to provide for. Some of the supplies most needed include: binders, dividers, backpacks and back sacks as well as packages of twistable crayons. A collection bin has been placed outside the church office. Your contribution is greatly appreciated! (the school supplies will be collected on August 21st) If your family is in need of assistance please log on to: www.westgenesee.org and please fill out the request form with your child’s name, school and grade. First priority is given to students whose information we have received by Saturday, August 19. Your information is completely confidential. Please contact [email protected] with any questions.

Next weekend, we will welcome Fr. Michel Ekonzo

from Missionhurst - CICM. We look forward to hear-

ing about the ministry Fr. Michel and Missionhurst

provide. The heart of Missionhurst missionaries’

work continues to be sharing the hope and comfort of

the Gospel while relieving the suffering of our poor-

est, most neglected brothers and sisters in Christ. In

response to people’s most urgent needs, Missionhurst-

CICM missionaries may start a new farming project,

build a new church, or chapel, or school, or lay the

foundation for clean water. They may also work to

improve nutrition and health, establish a loving home

for orphans and abandoned children, start a leadership

and skills formation program, or a sheltered workshop

for the handicapped or provide “seed” money to vil-

lage entrepreneurs who are struggling to start a small

business. Missionhurst- CICM missionaries are pre-

pared to stay, live among the people, share in their

privation and participate in the day-to-day effort need-

ed to achieve life-lomg spiritual and material changes.

We will be hearing more wonderful things that Mis-

sionhurst – CICM does

when they are here with

us. There will be a sec-

ond collection for them

next weekend.

Safe Environment Training Initial Training will be held Monday, August 7 at 6pm in the Upper Room. Register online at Virtus.org. Recertification Training will be held Monday, August 21 at 6pm in the Upper Room. Register by calling St Joseph's Office.

Living our Faith~ July & August: Jail Ministry

Jail Ministry serves primarily to advocate for people in-carcerated in the Onondaga County Justice Center. In addition to the Visitor-Advocacy Program, this ministry performs social-justice work, helps facilitate Recovery, offers a Poverty Bail Program and holds prayer meetings and Bible study with the inmates. The organization de-fines itself as “a grassroots, social justice, spiritually founded community collective organized to advocate on the behalf of the incarcerated; to promote peace-making and to advance the protection of human dignity within the community. Over 60 volunteers share their light and gifts on a regular basis to ensure that the Gospel impera-tive to visit the prisoner is lived out faithfully in our community. We are excited to welcome Keith Cieplicki, Jail Ministry Coordinator, this weekend as he shares with us the great works of this organization.
