    Gospel Question of the Week

Germans have a word to describe this time

of the year – Sauregurkenzeit. It literally

translates as “sour pickle time” (because it’s

the time when cucumbers are ready to be

picked for pickling). It refers to the weeks

during summer when there is not much happening.

School is closed. People are away on vacation or at summer

cabins or camps. Everybody is a little sluggish because of the

    heat. Not much is stirring.

My spirit too often experiences sauregurkenzeit during this

time of the summer. It becomes hard for me to get inspired.

Not much seems to be happening in prayer. I try not to get

discouraged because eventually I’ll break out of the funk.

It’s like opening a pickle jar. Most pickle jars are stubbornly

hard to open. You grip and twist and grunt again and again.

Nothing gives. So, you take a breath and relax and try again

    and – POP! It’s open.

Whenever and however sauregurkenzeit has you feeling stuck,

sluggish, dull, or frustrated that nothing’s happening, in prayer

or in some area of your life – breathe, relax, try again.

God will pop it for you eventually. All things pass. Blessed be

    sauregurkenzeit!

    T E E N S Emmaus Ministry next Sunday

    Juniors and Seniors,

    join us once per month!

    Sunday, July 28 at Noon

Emmaus Peer Ministry is a monthly

group for Jrs. and Srs. in high school

where we strive to be Catholic leaders.

The goal of Emmaus is to form disciples

that desire to walk alongside their peers

to help them in any situation possible

    and lead them to Jesus.

If you could sit at the feet of Jesus and

listen to him, what would you most want

    to hear?

Please take time today to discuss this question with

others, or to reflect on it in private prayer.

    Dear Parishioners of

    St. Vincent de Paul,

I would like to say to all of

    you "ASANTE SANA!" ("Thank

    you very much" in Swahili)

    for your warm welcome and

your openness. It was a great

opportunity to be with you earlier this month. Thanks for your

prayers and your support. MUNGU AWABARIK KILA

    NFP Awareness Week

begins this Sunday, July 21 The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has

by bringing awareness of spousal love. This year NFP Week

runs from July 21-27. These dates include the anniversary of

the papal encyclical Humanae Vitae (July 25) the feast of

St. Joachim and St. Anne (July 26). Human life is a beautiful
