Conquer Cravings with These Healthy SubstitutionsSource: https://www.heart.org/en/healthy-living/healthy-eating/losing-weight/conquer-cravings-with-these-healthy-substitutions
Food TexturesWe have all experienced food cravings – and o en those cravings have to do
with texture – like something creamy or crunchy. Food textures play a big role in whether we like or dislike certain foods. For example, while you may not like mushy canned peas, you may be surprised that you like fresh or barely cooked peas. Luckily, eating healthy includes foods of all sorts of textures and avors. Here are some suggestions on satisfying your cravings with nutritious snacks of a variety of textures:
CreamyInstead of this: While ice cream may come to mind rst, there are a variety of
other smooth snacks that can be just as satisfying. Try munching on this:• Fresh avocado spread on whole grain bread OR ½ avocado eaten plain with a spoon• Warm 1 tablespoon creamy peanut butter in the microwave for 10 seconds and drizzle over ½ cup low-fat, no added sugar frozen yogurt.• Puree some berries and swirl into a cup of low-fat yogurt with no sugar added.
CrunchyInstead of this: Pretzels and chips have a crunchy texture that you may crave, but they can come with a lot of extra
sodium that you don’t need.Try munching on this:• ¾ cup whole grain cereal, no added sugar• Crunchy unsalted nuts• Whole grain crisp breads• Plain popcorn; to add some avor, experiment with various spices like cinnamon or your favorite spice or herb
LiquidInstead of this: Sweet tea or soda may sound refreshing, but it can take a while to work o all those empty calories.
A medium-sized fancy mocha co ee drink with whipped cream can be 400 calories- and that’s before adding sugar or honey. Try sipping on this:
• Plain iced tea made with a squeeze of lemon. You can sweeten with berries or a non-caloric sweetener• Add fruit slices to a glass and ll with club soda• Instead of the fancy mocha drink, choose a small latte made with nonfat milk and topped with cinnamon which
is about a quarter of the calories.
SquishyInstead of this: Jelly-like candies or even kids’ “fruit” snacks might sound like squishy fun in your mouth, but other
options pack more nutrition. Try munching on this:• Fresh grapes are sweet and juicy; freeze them for a few minutes for a fun texture• Make tapioca pudding with squishy tapioca pearls; follow the directions on the box, only use half the amount of
sugar or a non-caloric sweetener and fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk• Cherry tomatoes and room-temperature string cheese are squishy, stringy fun
CrispyInstead of this: Some folks may not like apples because they can be so and mealy or grainy; the same can be true of
over-cooked potatoes. Try munching on this:• Choose crisp apple varieties like: Braeburn, Honey Crisp, Fuji and Gala; avoid Cortland, Red Delicious or Rome
which can be so er• Choose red potatoes or white potatoes and don’t overcook; avoid Russet potatoes which are high in starch making
them perfect for mashed potatoes – but also making them seem ‘mealy or grainy’

TOMS RIVER, NJ - Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing pain, numbness, burning, tingling, pain and debilitating balance problems.
The most common method your doctor will likely recommend to treat your neuropathy symptoms is with prescription drugs that may temporarily reduce your symptoms. With names such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, Cymbalta and Neurontin, they are primarily
anti-seizure or anti-depressants drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfort-able and have a variety of harmful side eff ects. There is now a facility right here in Ocean County that off ers you hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side eff ects. (see special neuropathy severity exami-nation off er at the end of this article)
1. What is the underlying cause?2. How much Nerve Damage has been sustained?
NOTE: Once you have sustained 85% nerve loss, there is likely nothing that we can do for you.
3. How much treatment will your condition require?
In order to treat your neuropathy, three factors must be determined:
Peripheral NeuropathyWarning!
• Decrease pain• Stimulate nerve function• Accelerate tissue repair
• Increase blood fl ow/healing
The amount of treatment needed to allow for healing varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular examination. The typical treatment course is 6-10 sessions. Non-invasive MLS laser therapy is quick and pain-
less with no side-eff ects. With a reported 85% - 90% effi cacy rate in relieving pain and infl ammation, MLS Laser Therapy is the treatment you are looking for!Dr. Scott Amoss DPM will do a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of the nerve damage. This examination will consist of a detailed sensory evaluation, exten-sive peripheral vascular testing, and a detailed analysis of the fi ndings of your neuropathy.
Dr Amoss will be off ering this neuropathy severity examination for the fi rst 25 callers.
Call 732-350-0100 to make an appointment with Dr Amoss to determine if your peripheral
neuropathy can be treated. Locations in Toms River and Manchester
The treatment that Dr. Amoss provides has several main goals:

Visiting Physician Stresses importance ofadvance Care Planning During CoViD-19
e COVID-19 pandemic has brought about a keen awareness of our own mortality. It has provided food for thought raising such questions as: How do I want to spend my nal days? Do I want life-sustaining treatments? Do I want to die at home?
Regardless of your age or health status, now is the time to make sure you have clearly outlined your preferences for end-of-life care. Among the higher risk, frail elderly population, advance care planning is even more critical.
VNA Health Group’s home-based primary care team, Visiting Physician Services (VPS), has been having advance care planning conversations with their homebound elderly patients for years as part of the comprehensive services they provide. Dr. Sara Leonard, Medical Director for VPS, says “Now with the pandemic, end-of-life discussions have never been more important. ose who are elderly with underlying chronic or serious illnesses are most at risk for complica-tions from the coronavirus. Understanding our patients’ wishes for end-of-life care helps us to keep their values and goals at the center of the care we provide for them.”
As a practice that provides only house calls, VPS might discuss advance care planning at an initial visit when it ap-pears to be an appropriate topic. ese discussions are also timely when a patient returns home a er a hospitalization or when there’s been signi cant change in the status of an acute or chronic condition.
Comments Leonard, “Advance care planning discussions are o en delicate and di cult topics to broach and initi-ate. ey are usually guided by the patients and families along with our clinical intuition and experience. We generally include a discussion of the patient’s diagnosis and prognosis, time for the patient to ask questions and process informa-tion, and the opportunity to discuss his/her wishes for end-of-life. is may include reviewing options and completing an advanced directive.”
A large percentage of advance care planning discussions result in the completion of a POLST form, Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment. e POLST form ensures that a patient’s end-of-life wishes are formally documented. Completing a POLST form has become vital in today’s environment as severe cases of the coronavirus disease lead to an increase in deaths.
In addition, studies show that advance care planning can reduce hospitalizations, reduce health care costs, increase community-based palliative care and hospice utilization and signi cantly increase the likelihood that care will be delivered in accordance with the patient’s wishes.
Leonard concludes, “At its core, advance care planning is one way to ensure that patients receive the care that re ects and supports what matters most to them, especially in situations where they cannot speak for themselves. With many coronavirus patients dying alone, without loved ones nearby for comfort or readily accessible to advocate for their end-of-life wishes, advanced care planning discussions help to alleviate some of the fear and uncertainty in critical situations.”
Visiting Physician Services, headquartered in Holmdel and part of VNA Health Group, is the largest physician-based geriatric house call practice in New Jersey. eir clinical sta is comprised of 7 physicians and 30 nurse practitioners and physician assistants, who work as a team serving 3,400 active patients throughout Bergen, Passaic, Union, Essex,
Middlesex, Somerset, Monmouth, and Ocean Counties. eir mission is to enable patients to stay at home as they age by providing quality in-home medical care. Visiting Physician accepts Traditional Medicare and Horizon Managed Care. For more information about Visiting Physician Services, please call 732-571-1000 or visit www.vnahg.org/vps.

The Jewish Federation hosted its fi rst ever OY CORONA Comedy Night. The aim was to enable people to celebrate and blow off some steam during these challenging times through laughing together.
The headliner was comedian Robin Fox, who brought along two other celebrity comedian friends: Karen Brenner and Cory Kahaney.
An additional feature of the evening was that 8 local “jokesters” from throughout Ocean County were fea-tured telling their funniest jokes. Every one of these jokesters was also supporting a charity benefi ting the community. Following this show, those who watched were invited to vote for their favorite joke, with the Jewish Federation making a donation to their chosen charity in their honor.
The event took place on the night of a tropical storm – and despite half of Ocean County being without power, more than 100 watched the show live. Approximately 500 more tuned in after the event on the Jew-ish Federation’s web site and Facebook page.
Headliner Robin Fox joked about the upcoming holidays being easier while shelter-ing-in-place, “my mother-in-law’s brisket tastes so much better over the internet.”
Comic Karen Brenner joked about current times that, “It’s very hard being named Karen now. Complaining is a sport for me and now I have to fi nd a new sport.”
Most of the local competitors told classic jokes, but Rabbi Cantor David Amar joked about masks.
More than 100 votes were tallied for these jokesters, resulting in a tie between Gary Hyman, President of a Shalom Club in an active adult community, and Rabbi Michael Jay of the Jewish Community Center of Long Beach Island.
The Jewish Federation is contributing $360 to each of their chosen charities: Chai Lifeline in honor of Gary Hyman and the JCC of LBI in honor of Rabbi Jay.
As a token of appreciation to the other participants, smaller contributions are being given to: Congregation Ahavat Olam, Congregation B’nai Israel, Chabad of Toms River, Keshet (that works for full equality for all LGBTQ Jews), and the Anti-Defamation League.
The event also raised several thousand dollars in support of the Federation’s Jewish Family and Children’s Services (JFCS) program, going towards a required fundraising match to help local Holocaust survivors.
In the words of Federation co-chair Carol Brichke, “The Jewish Federation is proud that we can support these community organizations and continue to bring our community together to laugh and celebrate. We look forward to more opportunities to come together virtually this fall.”
For more information about the Jewish Federation’s Fall series of virtual events, to support JFCS, and to see the show, visit www.jewishoceancounty.org.
