Pastoral letter

Dear FriendsSince the death in the United States on 25 May of George Floyd, the Covid 19 pandemic has been pushed down from the top of the news headlines to be replaced by pictures and reports of protests across the world in support of the Black Lives Matter campaign.

Public figures, politicians, actors and athletes have come out to share accounts of the prejudice and inequality they have suffered in the past because of the colour of their skin or their ethnicity. Being overlooked for promotion or work, being on the receiving end of physical, mental or verbal assaults – all shameful examples of racism which should not be tolerated or accepted as being acceptable forms of behaviour.

Whilst the issue of racism is raised unfortunately, as on so many other similar occasions, a certain element has taken advantage of the situation to promote their own radical views and, whilst doing so, scenes of violence and hatred have broken out in the towns and cities of our own nation. Also not to be condoned.

Some people find living in a diverse world challenging. It creates within them fear, insecurity and even, as we have witnessed, hostility and hatred. Through the centuries diversity be it through race, culture gender, politics or economy has led to division. But diversity can and should be a cause for celebration. The richness of difference being something from which we can all benefit. Rather than those of other cultures being made to feel as though they are second class citizens and less worthy of the lives others enjoy, a mixture of cultures, races and opinions provide opportunities to learn from each other and grow in understanding.

All lives matter because God created us all in His image. We may have different skin colours, follow different cultural practices, believe in different creeds but He calls us all to meet with our differences. Living in equality and harmony. Working together towards justice, mutual respect and love.

Welcome one another … just as Christ welcomed you for the glory of God” (Romans 15:7)

God Bless

Sally

Back to the Future

I’ve recently been given access to a large number of Burwash Broadsheets going right back the 1980s (which I’m always unpleasantly surprised to remember is 40 years ago). It is very interesting to see how much has changed – and how much has not – since that time.

For example, in September 1983, an article claimed that there are “more ministers than doctors, twice as many churches as post offices”. I thought it would be fun to see how that compares with today. I don’t know the source of the figures in the 1983 article, but my source for today’s figures is what I could find on Google, so don’t hold me to any of what follows below!

Neighbourhood Watch

Burwash, Burwash Common, Burwash Weald and surrounding areasRecent local incidents

At the time of writing I haven’t seen any new reports of local crimes on our areas but I have been able to send a few e-mail circulations warning of problems nearby. If you would like to know more about our local NHW by e-mail scheme please contact me [email protected]

Current trends

Since last month there have been a number of further thefts involving tack and associated equine equipment around the general Rother Police area and over the border in Kent.

Sussex Police are warning about the dangers of leaving doors and windows open as the warmer weather arrives. An open door or window can be an invitation to burglars who might otherwise pass by.

Over the week ending 12th June there were 7 reported burglaries in the Rother Police division and 5 in Hastings.

Scams

Alarm bells should ring:

IF you are asked for any details about your bank account,

IF someone wants you to make any form of payment or purchase a product of any kind for them,

IF you are asked to dial a premium rate number (for example, those starting 09 or 087),

IF someone wants your social media identities or login details, or those of any of your contacts,

IF you are asked for any passwords or PINs,

IF someone asks you to set up any passwords or PINs over the phone,

IF you are asked to download software to your PC or to hand over control of your PC, smartphone or tablet to anyone.

This list is not exhaustive, scammers like other criminals are always thinking up new ways to relieve people of their property. Being AWARE is probably our best tool to stop them!

Contacting the Police

If you genuinely feel a situation needs immediate Police attendance always dial 999 and give as much information as you can about the location and circumstances.

For non-urgent matters you can contact Sussex Police by email at [email protected] use the non-emergency number 101 (101 calls cost 15p from landlines or mobiles) or online at www.sussex.police.uk which has been updated to make reporting simpler and more effective.

If something strikes you as odd or out of place please make a record and you may be able to help if a crime or incident is discovered at a later time.

Police often seek dash cam footage after a serious crash or criminal incident.

Re-opening of Churches

Our churches have now re-opened for personal prayer (we are not yet allowed to hold services other than funerals). A schedule of days and times when the churches across the United Benefice are open will be circulated weekly via the E Bulletins and church website and a notice put on the board in the porch of St Bartholomew’s. Whilst in the churches please ensure that you follow the social distancing and safety instructions.

Food Banks & FSW

Thank you for all your donations to the Food Bank. Family Support Work have now reopened their appeal and, with the blessing of the Battle branch of the Bexhill Food Bank, it has been agreed that future donations will be divided between the two organisations. FSW are particularly requesting nappies, baby wipes, baby sun screen, toiletries for both men and women, feminine hygiene products and cleaning materials. Please continue to leave your donations either in the basket in the church porch or bring them to the Rectory.

Neighbourhoodwatch

Very good question…

Throughout the 1980s there was often a feature in the magazine looking back at events gleaned from much earlier parish magazines. One such article from February 1986’s magazine caught my eye. It was taken from a report in the magazine of July 1903.

“The Trustees of the Burwash Penny Bank regret to see the number of depositors decreasing each year. When the bank first opened some ten years ago, at the time the payment of school pence was abolished by the government, a large

number of children availed themselves of the Penny Bank system as a means for saving money. The bank is still open every Monday morning at school from 12 o’clock to 12.30. A few pence deposited each week, instead of being spent in sweets, will in a few years accumulate to a sum sufficient to buy some clothes for a girl or boy going out to service. 2½ per cent interest is added to deposits of 10s. and upwards at the end of the year. A part or all of an account can be withdrawn at any time after a notice of seven days has been given to the trustees. In many parts of England, where wages are much lower than in Sussex, the Penny Bank is used for

saving pence for a rainy day.”

For those, like me, who were unaware of ‘school pence’, this was a system in the Victorian period where children who went to school were expected to regularly bring in a small sum of money to help pay for the running costs of the school. It wasn’t necessarily very much money but it could still be difficult for some families to manage and in some schools, children who weren’t able to contribute their school pence were barred from their school until the money was forthcoming.

Deborah Knox Watson

According to the article, in 1983 there were “45,000 Christian ministers in this year, compared with 32,000 doctors, 83,000 accountants, 30,000 estate agents and 43,000 solicitors”.

According to Mr Google, nowadays there are 36,636 Christian ministers (actually that was 2015 and the number was expected to shrink by about another 1,000 by 2020), 290,000 doctors (of which 61,500 are GPs), 149,152 solicitors, 275,000 accountants, 21,641 estate agents and 149,152 solicitors.

The same article stated that there were 51,000 churches – about twice as many churches as post offices and about two-thirds the number of pubs. Sadly, there

are now 16,000 churches (about 30 are closed each year). At 11,500, the number of post offices has more than halved in the last 40 years (and only 300 of those 11,500 are actually directly managed by the Post Office). The number of pubs too has reduced considerably – from 50,000 in 1983 to about 39,000 last year.

We have yet to see the result of the coronavirus pandemic on all these institutions. But in general, there does seems to be something here about our having a greater focus on managing our wealth and health and protecting ourselves legally than being concerned about our spiritual health.

Debate!

Beautiful picture drawn by Niamh, a member of the Sunday Club.

Parents’ influence

In the September 1983 edition of the Burwash Broadsheet, an article by Jackie Quist read:

Parents say, “We will not influence our children in making choices and decisions in the matter of religion.”

Why not?...

• The television will!

• The advertisements will!

• The press will!

• The radio will!

• The movies will!

• The neighbours will!

• The politicians will!

• The schoolteachers will!

… the greatest single influence in any child’s life is from parents. It can be for good or for bad and will leave a lasting impression on the life of your child.”

Nowadays to the top of that list you would need to add:

• Social media will!

Parish Footpath Walk

We have not been walking during the lockdown period and I think this would be a good time to hang up the map and compass and step down from leading the group. I have led the walks for around 10 years during which time there have been some great moments, wonderful countryside and good conversations.

It is a very easy going group with no formal structure, walking each 3rd Monday in the month except December and if someone would like to take over I would be happy to explain what is involved. Please contact me on 884312.

Burwash Parish Council Matters - July 2020

Burwash Neighbourhood Development Plan

After many years and a great deal of research, the Plan has been completed and has now been formally adopted by the Parish Council. It is the result of a very successful collaboration between many representatives of the community and the Parish Council and it now goes before Rother District Council for their consideration. It is a very thorough guide to our history and natural environment and the aspirations of our communities. It will be used in discussions with the District Council concerning housing and other developments in the area. The Plan does not in fact allocate any sites for development, but it does have the support of the community, the Council and our district Councillors.

To see the most recent edition of the document, it is available on the Burwash Parish website:

https://burwashparish.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/BNDP-4.6.20-1.pdf

Lockdown

The ‘Help Line’ established by the Council at the start of the ‘Lockdown’ has proved invaluable for those who have needed help in the communities and a lifeline especially for those who have had to remain in their homes. A number of locals have been manning the phones and keeping in regular contact with those who have asked for help or maybe just a friendly voice at the end of line. Of course, they are not the only ones who have been keeping ears and eyes open for their neighbours and friends and the Burwash communities have risen to the challenges wonderfully well. As things slowly open up, there is still work to be done and maybe some impatience as we see our pubs, playgrounds and meeting places still shut and we are unable to return as quickly as we would like to holding our families and friends close.

But the Community and Communications Working Party is looking ahead to brighter times when we can come together to remember those who are no longer with us, give thanks to all those who have helped to keep life ticking over, and celebrate the end of social-distancing. If you have any thoughts how we might mark the end of Lockdown, please get in touch with the clerk ([email protected]).

Road Improvements

East Sussex Highways has presented the Council with a detailed report in which they accept the need to address transport issues in Burwash. They have come up with a number of proposals and now need further feedback from the community on the following:

• It is appropriate to introduce a 20mph limit through the village and there are detailed plans as to how this can be implemented. They need to consider extending the ‘buffer zone’ at the eastern end of the village in order to smooth out the change from 20mph to ‘no speed limit’

• They have suggested that a zebra crossing facility is the most appropriate solution for a pedestrian crossing and could be introduced close to St Bartholomew’s Church. They advise that this would be the least intrusive means of crossing the High Street

• Bollards at the ‘pinch point’ are not recommended, but consideration could be given to the removal of the on-street parking along the northern side of the road at this location

It is good to see progress in these areas but there is still some way to go and members of the communities will have strong views which need to be taken into account. Please respond to the consultations as they appear. You can follow developments on the Burwash Parish Website and the e-bulletins. Your voices will be very important in guiding how this is moved forward.

The issue of the yellow road markings is also up for consideration and I hope that you have seen the article:

Opportunity to be heard: Tell us your view on the current layout of yellow lines,

on the Burwash Parish website. This is an opportunity to review the proposed design. The Parish Council is keen to ensure their recommendations to this review reflect the views of local residents. This is your opportunity to tell us what you think about current yellow line parking restrictions. We welcome your feedback by 30th June. We will consider your views at the full council meeting on 14th July and make recommendations to the Transport Authority soon after. For a video showing the existing yellow lines:

And to take part in the survey, click here, but be quick, the closing date is 30th June.

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/LX8R7YK

We haven’t forgotten....

There are a number of other matters that have been raised over the past few months, such as what to do with the Phone Box outside Oakleys’ Garage, ‘Love Burwash’ and so on, but at this time, the Council is prioritising the issues which came to the fore in the Neighbourhood Plan, and what is achievable with social distancing. They are not forgotten however and will get attention when other priorities have been met.

Come and join us

There are currently vacancies for two more Councillors, so if you would like to be a part of the decision making process for the future of our communities or would like to chat to someone about what is involved in the work of the Council, please contact Emma Neil, the parish clerk ([email protected]).

With our gratitude to all those who are helping to keep our communities safe.

We have the Union Jack and the St Georges flag, if anyone has the East Sussex flag we would be very grateful.

The Blacksmith’s Tea and Coffee Shop

There is still some way to go, but with new windows, a new front door, new floors, ceiling, electrics, kitchen and a new washroom, we can now add a new manager! More of that in the August Magazine and the e-bulletin. (Have you signed up for that yet? Find out how on the Burwash Parish website.)

Of course, we will have to wait until the Café has been finished and the Government has given us all the go-ahead to meet together and socialise so it might be a month or two before we can have our first teas and coffees. Trevor has continued to work (on his own) and is fixing the kitchen, Mike (on his own) is putting in the floor covering, Mark (on his own) did the plastering, Matthew (on his own) has sorted out the electrics and Terry is sorting out the seating and the furnishings. Once Rother District Council has approved the very tasteful shop sign, we will be nearly there.

Carrying out such a substantial project has been a huge undertaking and we are very grateful to the many donors who have made this all possible – nearly £28000 has been raised and many essentials have been donated including the coffee machine, chairs, crockery, table cloths and soft furnishings. Our target of £29000 is within reach, so if you have put off making a donation - now is the time to reach for you pc, your pen or your purse:

BURWASH VILLAGE HALL

Charity registration no: 305350

During May, we have been the recipients of a grant of £2,000 from Burwash Parish Council to further boost our fundraising for the new windows at the Hall, and we are very grateful to the members of our Parish Council. We are still hopeful that the work will be carried out in August this year. I am very grateful to David Axford for masterminding the grant applications helping us achieve our target, and to Tom Appleby for dealing with the contractors and planning permissions. We couldn’t have done it without them!

One of the requirements for receiving one of the grants is to set up a Burwash Village Hall website. We have been looking at various examples to give us ideas of the best format. So, watch this space for further details. A second requirement is to have an event at the Hall to celebrate the completion of the work.

We look forward to welcoming all our groups and other users back to the hall when appropriate to do so. Please let Peter Angove know when you have decided on a return date.

At present the Hall is being used by the Burwash Community Library, to house the books being given to readers without library facilities. They will deliver direct to your door and the service is open to everyone, although priority is given to those aged 70+ or in the vulnerable groups. To register, please e-mail [email protected] or call 01435 883772. They also have a Facebook group Burwash and Etchingham Book Club. Happy reading!
