Many think of Jesus as “meek and mild” by which they mean “weak and soft.” Artists reinforce this image, but it is not drawn from

the New Testament. The real Jesus is a tekton (New Testament Greek: builder, carpenter) who, at 30, leaves His industry for a ministry covering many miles on foot in all kinds of weather. He boldly stands for truth and confronts falsehood. He endures suffering that would break most men.

True, His first coming was in poor, humble circumstances. All that has changed. “He was crucified in weakness, but lives by the power of God” (2 Corinthians 13:4). John describes the risen Jesus in awesome terms.

His eyes were like a flame of fire… His voice was like the roar of many waters. In His right hand He held seven stars, from His mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and His face was like the sun shining in full strength (Revelation 1:14,15-16).

of vast armies (Revelation 19:11-16). This war is brutal, requiring us

to be covered with God’s full armor. But defense alone cannot capture,

conquer and gain new ground. We must take the offensive, wielding “the

sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17).

The King invests unique power in His word. It is “living and active, sharper

than any two-edged sword,” cutting into human hearts as nothing else can

(Hebrews 4:12; Acts 2:37). To substitute our wisdom is like dropping this living

sword to take up a useless, splintered reed.

Belay’s Spiritual BattleBehailu Abebe — Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

God is in control of all situations. He used the persecution of Acts 8 to spread the truth of Christ. Today, God uses trials and tribulations in similar ways to shine King Jesus’ light,

as exemplified by Belay and his family in Ethiopia. Belay was first brought to Jesus through World Bible School about 15 years ago. After further Bible study with us, he obeyed the Gospel and joined the Nekemete Preacher Training School to advance his spiritual

knowledge. After completing Level 1, he returned to his hometown. With God’s help, he planted the first congregation in his home. We helped him to rent a bigger house for a decent place to worship.

Observing his dedicated work, we invited him to the Level 2 Preacher Training School in Addis Ababa. He was one of my favorite students. Upon graduation, he went back to Dire Dawa and soon planted another congregation in the town of Alemaya. Dire Dawa is a Muslim town. We knew Belay’s untiring work would advance Christ’s cause there, but we also expected trouble. Believing that God rules over the sufferings of the church, Belay faithfully continued preaching the Gospel. To fulfill his greater vision, he translated WBS courses from Amharic into the widely-spoken trade language Oromo.

Satan, outraged about Belay’s activity, stirred up five Muslim students to hurt Belay’s son by stoning him at school. His son ran and God rescued him from death, though he was badly injured. Belay reported the crime to the school administration and the police. Four of the radicals were imprisoned. The fifth tried to commit suicide. Soon the local District Chairman, three Muslim sheiks, two policemen and two teachers came to apologize to Belay for his son’s suffering, and to offer free medical treatment. Belay accepted their apology. He visited the radicals in prison. They literally cried and asked for forgiveness. He told them that since he and his family are Christians they would forgive them totally. Everyone who saw and heard was astonished. Belay’s faith was tested, but his actions demonstrated the meaning of Christianity.

Please pray for the Lord’s work in Ethiopia. We praise God for Belay!

Feroze Baksh — Ann’s Grove, Guyana

I an from the village of Ann’s Grove about 24 miles from the capital, Georgetown, in Guyana, South America.

My father died when I was three, leaving my mother (26) to raise six children. By long tradition, our family followed Islam.

As a teenager in high school, a friend introduced me to WBS. I wanted to study the Bible so I borrowed his introductory lesson and made a hand-written copy. I sent my answers to my friend’s study helper, Mrs. Iva Hill of San Antonio, TX. She was impressed by receiving a hand-written copy of the lesson. I did well on the lesson and we began corresponding. In 1988, Mrs. Hill invited me to meet her and a group of WBS teachers at a Georgetown hotel. I attended, studied more of the Bible

Richard and Carol: We attended the InterMission Retreat in Kenya recently and received one of your new Bibles (very nice!), as well as the retreat workbook. We appreciate very much your contribution, as it was very beneficial to us.Billie Jean: I have a WBS student who qualified for a free Bible…. His response: “Praise the Lord, my teacher, hooo, my Bible reached me today, 13th May 2019, 09:54, African time. Thank you, thank you!” My emotions were out the window with his joy! I could only compare it to a child on Christmas morning! How much value does the world—or I—place on the only book that leads one to Heaven? Thank you for “Bibles for Millions.”Elaine: I have suggested to my congregation that we purchase Bibles to give away at our local schools on a designated day.

Feroze’s Spiritual Battleand surrendered my life in baptism to the lordship of Jesus Christ, April 24, 1988.

I knew there would be strong opposition from the Muslim Community. When my brothers found out, they considered me a disgrace to Islam and literally beat me in order to renounce my faith. I was cut off from the Muslim Community and was labelled a “Black Sheep” and a “Khafir” (deserter from Islam).

The closest church of Christ met at Enmore, about six miles from my home. Every Sunday, I would escape from home to attend church services. When I returned, I would receive a beating. This

continued for two years. By then, they realized that I was committed to Jesus.

Opposition continued, but with much less persecution. Christians greatly encouraged me, and I continued my journey in Christ. Now I share a good relationship with my relatives. They still cling to Islam, but they respect my faith in Jesus.

Western society sometimes trivializes old things and old

people, even marginalizing them as having little value. We seem to assume that “new and improved” means there is no use for the older and “less improved.” As I

continue to move toward this stage in life, I ask myself, “Will this happen to me as well?”

The Bible has a different set of values, especially regarding older people. In 1 Timothy 5, Paul exhorts the reader, “Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father…older women as mothers…” This idea got me thinking about some of our aging church buildings and properties. Is there value in these as the years go by and they stand partially used or unused at all?

Last year, WBS received $25,000 from a congregation in Texas which had only a

handful of members still worshipping there, and unfortunately had to close their doors. Instead of the building and property sitting idly by for years and years, the congregation decided to turn something old into new students with WBS through their gift. Does your congregation have something of value, though it might be considered old and no longer in use, something that could be sold and transformed into new Bible studies for thousands of needy souls?

I was speaking with a brother last week who told me of a small church that is barely hanging on, yet has over $50,000 in the bank “for a rainy day”. Let me tell you, the rainy day is here for desperate seekers! They need to see online ads from WBS to connect with WBS study helpers who care for their

Remembering Donna ComptonRon Pottberg — DELTA, Colorado

Donna, a great servant of the Lord, will live on in the hearts of the World Bible School teachers

she helped over many years of WBS service. Even before WBS moved to Texas, Donna ran the WBS shipping center for the mid-west and Rocky Mountain region. She and her husband, Danny, started out using one bay in

their garage. Then they added a shed. Then they filled the entire garage stacked from floor to ceiling. Then they filled most of their three-bedroom house. I often visited the Compton home in Garland, TX. The house was like a maze with tunnels through each room and materials and orders stacked everywhere. Donna once told me that her bedroom was the only room in the house not used by World Bible School materials.

Donna had a huge card file of every teacher and church that used WBS from the mid-70s through 2008. Many years were given on a purely volunteer basis. She consented to receiving support only when absolutely necessary. She loved WBS, and she loved to talk, often saying, “Even your tombstone will have a mail slot for your WBS student mail!”

Jimmie Lovell’s words about the Comptons, written in 1976, applied more with each passing year: “They are filling a vital spot in service to you [WBS teachers], making their home, as we do ours, a factory-warehouse on behalf of the unsaved…. Donna and Danny, [we] surely do love and appreciate you, and understand fully the heavy and unselfish load you carry—a real cross—all for Him in whom we have our hope. God ever bless your good hearts.” I know that Donna is now receiving the fullness of the Father’s blessing.

Editor’s Note: In May’s Action!, Pat Brown highlighted Nollie’s estate planning, which now continues to advance her passion for spreading the Gospel through WBS.

More about NollieChester Woodhall — PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa

Nollie Herrington was a Chief Operator for Southwestern Bell in various Texas cities. After

retirement in 1985, she moved to Clyde, TX. As a very active member of the Clyde church of Christ, Nollie used WBS to share the life-saving Gospel with thousands in Zambia and South Africa.

As her main contact in Africa, I meet people all over Southern Africa who came to Christ through Nollie.

For example, I followed up with her student, David Manyoli, a South African businessman. David and others in his family made the good confession of faith and were baptized into Christ. They are currently leading a church plant in a new area.

Nollie was a great soul winner. She continued her enthusiastic interest in WBS even when in a wheelchair into her 102nd year. For more than three decades she pointed thousands of people to Jesus the Savior, with remarkable results. Nollie was recommended by the Clyde church of Christ and received a WBS Outstanding Service Award in October 2018. Nollie’s promotion to glory was in November 2018.

Wall of Honor Grows!

Recently Rick and Mary Shur—WBS representatives for much of the eastern U.S.—visited the WBS

teaching team at Bellevue church of Christ in Nashville. Soon thereafter, we received this note:

At the end of Rick’s PowerPoint presentation, Rick had Charles and Brenda Forehand to come forward. They were like deer in headlights (had no idea what was going on) and one of the elders presented them the Wall of Honor plaque. It was a wonderful moment. Charles was very humble about it and said that this honor goes to everyone who works with WBS. Thank you all for your work well done! Mary Shur. This photo shows a portion of three walls lined with 34 plaques—now 35!—that

honor World Bible School teachers and coordinators. The first such honoree was the exemplary Ruth Orr. Be sure to recognize your heroes, whether on the teaching wall or on the Founders’ Wall of Honor that highlights leaders, supporters and friends of WBS. For details, email Sheryl Williams at [email protected] or call 800-311-2006.

World Bible School has 16 formal Service Centers in countries where WBS works with large numbers of students. These Service Centers facilitate the movement of WBS mail, often through scanning. They help to coordinate recruiting, follow up, and special projects. All personnel are dedicated to Christ’s mission, serving Him in many local ways, and experiencing life with Him—as represented here by the recent wedding of Ismaell Jibril, our technician at the WBS Service Center in Accra, Ghana.

On May 11, WBS held a Regional Seminar for WBS coordinators, study helpers and

interested persons in Chattanooga, TN. The East Ridge church hosted 27 attendees of the two-plus hour event. We presented current WBS projects, future plans, new WBS teaching tools and how WBS can help improve teaching programs. We also exchanged success stories and unique ways congregations are using WBS, discussed concerns and answered questions. Thanks to all who joined us, and a special “Thank You!!” to East Ridge church of Christ. We really appreciate your help!

This was our second seminar this year, following the Austin event which attracted 58. We plan future WBS seminars in northwestern Alabama and in Nashville later this year. Watch the worldbibleschool.net “Events” page calendar for details, and plan to join us there!

If your congregation could host a WBS Seminar in your area, we’d enjoy discussing the possibilities. Call Bill or Richard at 512-345-8190 to learn more.

In addition to Action!, WBS

publishes a newsletter entitled COORDINATOR’S CORNER. Originally intended just for WBS coordinators, it now covers upcoming events, helpful hints and other useful information for coordinators, study helpers and others to stay up to date on all things WBS.

We send it out (by email only) six times each year, in the months when Action! doesn’t go out. If you would like to receive Coordinator’s Corner, send an email to [email protected] or call us at 512-345-8190. If you have already asked to receive it and are not, please check your junk or spam folder to be sure it’s not going there.

Teen MissionariesSwing the Spirit’s SwordKathy Henton — Jackson, TN

In the spring of 2018, Brian Davis, Executive Vice

President of World Bible School, spoke about WBS at Jackson Christian School in Jackson, TN. He told how Christians could begin to sow the Gospel seed in all the world without leaving home. He requested prayer for WBS. As a result, a teacher wrote “WBS” on her class prayer board. A few months later, Sharon Walker, a second-generation WBS “warrior” at Campbell Street church of Christ, asked that teacher to invite JCS students to become WBS Study Helpers. The answer to prayers included personal involvement and exponential multiplication as young people begin their missionary experience now. Twelve students answered the call. They have met once a week and currently have 436 students in 49 countries of the world. Three students are over 18 and have online students as well. Funding for postage has come from Campbell Street, grandparents, faculty and a substitute teacher who donates her pay. Students also contribute change into the “Send the Light” bucket.Comments from our young teachers: • “WBS gives purpose to each day.” • “I’ve been able to see that people

across the world are passionate to learn about God and His Word and it has made me think about my own relationship with Him.”

• “WBS has shaped my view of sharing God’s word tremendously. It is such a good way to share His word with people around the world and I am blessed to be a part of it!”

Praise to the Lord for raising up laborers from our youth for His harvest fields!  May He empower them now and for the rest of their lives to send out the call of Christ to the world!

Come to the WBS Austin Benefit Dinner!

The theme relates to the pheno-menal growth of Bibles for Millions. Join this massive movement, convinced of the divine promise, “My Word… shall not return to Me empty, but... shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11). Through WBS and Bibles for Millions, God rains down His Word and raises great, eternal harvests.

Auswich Mashabha in Zimbabwe tells us: “We partnered with the Avondale church to conduct a free medical outreach at Caledonia church of Christ (a result of earlier evangelism and WBS) and to share Jesus. About 500 people attended. Hundreds enrolled in WBS courses, and hundreds had the opportunity to know about Jesus, the church and the plan of salvation.”

Ingrid: This Bible study changed my life. Before I became ill, I would never have found time to do any kind of study, let alone a Bible study. Although this illness has been a challenge, it has given me the opportunity to do this Bible study…. I have finally found the truth [of] God’s word. It is truly powerful and so real to me. Even if I am not physically healed, my spiritual healing is the most important.

Ismael [Kenyan church planter]: World Bible School has done such a great work. For the last two years, I have connected many students to the local churches, and many have been baptized [160 last year]. The Nathan Holland family is on their way back

to Namibia, and later Angola! Umoyo recently qualified for dual citizenship (Zambia and U.S.).

While in the U.S. for official papers, Nathan coordinated between Portuguese-speaking nations to adapt the new translation of WBS courses by Solange Soares in Brazil. This fine, standardized translation is already benefiting Mozambique, with basic printing done in neighboring Zimbabwe. Angolan missionaries are planning printing similar in quality to printed WBS courses in English. Along with missionary Mike Ross in Brazil, Nathan has upgraded WBS’ Portuguese teaching web site and assisted his home congregation with its new workspace for English WBS.

In 1997, I graduated (99.7% g.p.a.) from the Guyana International Bible Institute. At present, I work with the church at Ann’s Grove/Clonbrook. I coordinate the local “Lads to Leaders/Leaderettes” and “Teach Guyana Ministry” (maturing via video conferencing). I also travel and conduct many events for Guyana’s “Church Growth and Leadership Development Initiative.” In 2016, I began weekly TV and radio programs called “Teaching the Truth in Love.” My email is [email protected].

Palmers to France for ÉMBBarry Baggott — NASHVILLE, Tennessee

Aaron and Betsy Palmer are moving to Colmar, France, to help establish that city’s first known church of Christ. New Testament congregations are few, and most

of France’s population has never heard the biblical Gospel. While in France, Aaron will work as an online World Bible School teacher and help with follow-up and managing online advertising, all for the French language partner of WBS, École Mondiale de la Bible (ÉMB). It is hoped that this will help ÉMB to grow and attract more French-speaking Bible students and give them a chance to hear the pure Word of God.

Aaron and Betsy are Freed-Hardeman graduates. They have gone on mission trips to French-speaking countries in Europe, Africa and the Pacific. For the last six years, they have worked in Nashville, TN, with the Crieve Hall congregation. They spent two years working with Barry Baggott in French World Outreach and four serving as the congregation’s youth minister. Crieve Hall will be the primary sponsor for the Palmers as they labor for the Lord in Colmar and nearby towns in eastern France.

On a Sunday morning I arrived early at the building to set up for Bible class. A couple of neighbors were walking their dog. I greeted them, and

offered them a copy of our new Bible, the ESV with World Bible School study notes. At first this couple demurred; they already had Bibles. I replied, “Oh, this is different. This Bible has special study notes that relate to the correspondence courses we send. This last year, over 1,400,000 new people applied for our courses, which are sent worldwide free of charge, taught by thousands of volunteer teachers.” This news, and especially the study notes, piqued their interest. As they went on their way, with their new Bible in hand, I overheard positive remarks including, “Isn’t this a beautiful Bible?”

About the same time, Sondra Davis, at our WBS front desk, received a phone call. Sue, a member of the Pine Valley church of Christ, Colorado, had studied the WBS Study Bible carefully for seven months. She had learned and grown so much! Now she wanted to use this Bible for outreach. She had convinced her small congregation to give a Bible to every member, and to pass them on to others who might benefit. She and her husband purchased 100 Bibles. Sue couldn’t say enough good about the Bible!
