SAINT OF THE MONTH:
Maria Goretti was born on October 16.1890, one of six children of Luigi andAssunta Goretti. This large farm family was poor materially but rich in devotion to Godand His church. Maria's father died when she was very young and rather than going toschool. Maria was charged with the care of her younger siblings so that her mothercould work to support the family. Maria was very devoted to the Rosary and wasrecognized for her grace and piety.
On July 5.1902.11-year-old Maria was at home mending a shirt when an 18-
year-old neighbor. Alessandro Serenelli approached and attacked her. He locked her ina room and tried to force himself on her. Maria resisted and told him she would rather
die than commit such a sin. Her attacker became enraged and Stabbed her fourteen times. Maria was taken to thehospital but her wounds were too severe and she died the following day. As Maria lay dying. she expressedconcern for her mother and siblings and offered forgiveness to her attacker with the words `.Yes for the love ofJesus I forgive him ...and I want to be with him in Paradise.
Allesandro was arrested and sentenced to thirty years in prison. He at first showed no sign of repentance.Eight years later all that changed when Maria appeared to him, dressed in white and gathering lilies. which sheoffered to him. As he accepted each lily. which turned into a white flame, he experienced a change of heart andrepented his sin and embraced conversion and peace. He was released after serving twenty-seven years in prison. His first action was to go to Maria's mother and beg forgiveness. which she granted.Maria was beatified on April 27,1947 by Pope Pius Xll and Canonized three yearslater on June 24,1950 by Pope Pius Xll. St. Maria Goretti Feast Day is July 6.

"|,I,RIO,I,ISM:
Patriotism is defined as devotion to and vigorousi support for one's country. Most people believe thatthey, are patriots. What does a patriot look like? Is hethe guy down the street who proudly flies our flag orthe individuals who participate in unpopulardemonstrations in protest of injustice? Both feel theyare supporting the values that our nation wasfounded upon and both are correct. Patriotism is notRepublican or Democrat, liberal or conservative, black or white. Our tradition says that diversity is astrength, not a weakness, compromise is not a dirtyword, respect for another person's point of view is
preferable to denouncing them as unpatriotic. Recenttimes have seen more polarization and less empathyfor others needs and opinions. Yet I do not know of
i another nation that has achieved so much, given somuch or loved so much as this great nation. Perhapsthis year we need to renew our dedication to the
principles that the founding fathers put forward in theDeclaration of independence and the Constitution.Take some time this 4'h of July to pray for morecompassion and love for these UNITED STATES OFAMERICA. God Bless America.
