MeMBer NeWs – TooT Your HorNPrescott’s Holiday Courtyard was transformed into a New Orleans Mardi Gras street scene for the 7th An-nual Crawfest. the event, hosted and underwritten by Dr. Peter Tibi, Medical Director of the James Fam-ily Heart Center at Yavapai Regional Medical Cen-ter (YRMC), was a celebration of friendship and com-munity with a purpose. All proceeds from the event, totaling more than $52,000, benefited YRMC’s Part-ner’s for Healty Students (PHS) program which in-corporates support for Adolescent Behavioral Health.
“this marks the third year our event has raised funds for the Partners for Healthy Students program,” said tibi. “this year, we are particularly grateful for the outpouring of community support, as 100% of funds raised will be used to expand the program to include the provision of behavioral health services.”
2019 Crawfest event sponsors included Air Methods/Native Air; APS; Boyle, Pecharich, Cline, Whittington & Stallings, PLLC; Ms. Robbie Nicol; Northern Ari-zona Hospitalists; Prescott Anesthesia Associates; the Prescott Elks Lodge; Mr. Bill Sonsin; Voya Financial; Wells Fargo; Wells Fargo Securities and Yavapai Pa-thology Associates.
PHS Director Amy Negovan spoke to the children’s mental health programs provided through YRMC: “the need for behavioral health services is compelling. One in five children has or will experience a diagnos-able behavioral, emotional, or mental health disorder. And we know if left untreated these disorders can dis-rupt school performance, harm relationships and lead to suicide – the second leading cause of death among adolescents.”
For the past 20 years, YRMC’s Partners for Healthy Students program has provided primary and preven-tive healthcare services in Prescott and surrounding areas to schoolchildren and their siblings throughout YRMC’s at no cost to families with little or no insur-ance or ability to pay. YRMC will begin to introduce the behavioral health program at the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year.
to learn more about YRMC’s Partners for Healthy Students program, please call the YRMC Foundation at (928) 771–5169 or email [email protected].

Power HoUrLUNCH
thank you to Culver’s for our June Power Hour lunch. Next Power Hour is at Denny’s at noon on July 2.
Burchard will lead the Phoenix Suns’ NBA G League affiliate in 2019-20, following his first year as a head coach at the professional level. The NAZ Suns finished 12-38, but greatly im-proved over the course of the season, finishing 9-14 in their last 23 games. they improved across most statistical categories as well, most notably averaging 109.8 points per game over their last 15 contests compared to 99.3 PPG over the first 35.
Burchard also saw a NAZ Suns player get called up to the NBA last season, as Jawun Evans signed a two-Way contract with the Phoenix Suns (he’s now with the Okla-homa City thunder).
“We are excited to have Bret back as the head coach of the Northern Arizona Suns and look forward to building upon the foundation that was put in place last season,” Interim General Manager Dylan DeBusk said. “As an affiliate of the Phoenix Suns, the Northern Arizona Suns play a key role in player de-velopment and we value what Bret can do to help all of the play-ers that don a Northern Arizona Suns jersey. We are confident in Bret’s abilities to lead this franchise and are excited to see the progress that we make in year two.”
Burchard, 32, will call Prescott Valley home for the third sea-son in what will be the fourth year of existence for the Northern Arizona Suns. He was an assistant coach during the team’s in-augural season in 2016-17. He was promoted to associate head coach entering their 2017-18 campaign shortly before getting called up to the Phoenix Suns, where he spent the year as a player development assistant.
“I am excited and thankful for another opportunity to coach the Northern Arizona Suns and again be a part of the quad-city com-
munity,” Burchard said. “I thank James Jones, Dylan DeBusk and Monty Wil-liams for believing in me as a coach and for trusting me to develop our young talent. I’m looking forward to sharing more great moments with our fans and supporters, and help the next group of young Suns players realize their dreams to the NBA.”
For over nine years, Burchard has been with the Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Mercury and Northern Arizona Suns. He worked
2013-16 as the Phoenix Suns’ video coordinator after spending 2010-13 in the basketball communications department for the Mercury and Suns.
Before joining the organization, Burchard was an assistant coach for two years at taylor University in Upland, Indiana, where he also went to school and played basketball. A Columbia, Missouri, native, Burchard earned his degree in sports manage-ment and public relations from taylor in 2008.

Arizona Downs has informed employees and horsemen that the racetrack’s summer season is being suspended due to ongoing is-sues in the battle for fair and equal access to out-of-state racing signals for its Off track Betting (OtB) system. Pending additional financing, the final live race days for the 2019 summer meet are June 22 & 23.
“OtBs are the lifeblood of horse racing in our state because they fund the purse distribution to the horse owners, trainers, grooms and jockeys that compete at Arizona racetracks,” said Arizona Downs Owner and Partner tom Auther. “Our OtBs need access to the same robust network of signals that turf Paradise offers at its OtBs through Monarch Content Management (Monarch). that’s why we pushed for legislation that would give us fair and equal ac-cess. Arizona Downs’ OtBs are still open for business, and we are planning to aggressively expand their number.”
HB 2547 is a new law that mandates that any simulcast signal of live racing brought into Arizona from another state “must be offered to each commercial live-racing permittee in this state.” Ac-cording to the turf Paradise website, turf Paradise and Monarch are intending to sue the State of Arizona in federal court to stop the new law.
the law will be enforced on August 27, 2019. At that time, Mon-arch will make a decision to either pull its signal from Arizona al-
together, or do as the law mandates and sell the signal to all state permitted racetracks and OtBs. Either way, HB 2547 guarantees that all permitted racetracks and OtBs will have equal access to all out-of-state racing signals.
Since its Memorial Day Weekend grand opening in Prescott Val-ley, Arizona Downs has attracted more than 10,000 fans to its week-end live racing events, including thousands of individuals that have never experienced horse racing before.
“Although it’s disappointing that the summer live racing season has been cut short, the town of Prescott Valley is optimistic and excited for summer racing to continue due to the huge benefit to the community and our citizens,” said town of Prescott Valley Mayor Kell Palguta. “Much like life, plans don’t always work exactly as expected, but there has been incredible progress with the new legis-lation, and we are glad that Arizona Downs is moving forward and finding new investors. I hope a huge crowd shows up this weekend to show their continuing support.”
“We are heartbroken at the prospect of suspending our 2019 sum-mer racing, and for our employees, and all the horsemen, trainers, jockeys and their families who stayed in Arizona to compete in our meet,” sayAuther. However the successful passage of HB 2547 puts us on sound footing for a full summer meet in 2020.”
