Greetings Everyone…
As I write this article, we are gearing up for our Volunteer Recognition Day. This day is special to all of us and
we look forward to this day when we can formally say “Thank you.” The preparations for this day are mostly
handled by our Coordinator of Volunteers and Activities. Sandra Young was a pro at this and after she retired,
Amanda Santagate picked up right where Sandy had left off and did an impeccable job last year. Unfortunately,
Amanda left her position at the end of May, 2018. As much as she enjoyed her job, she was a mother of school
children and as we all know, keeping up with their activities often creates a conflict with a full time job. So, as
much as we were sad to let her go, we all know that Amanda made the right decision.
The position has been advertised and soon, Karen Shanley, our Human Resources Director and I will start
interviewing the applicants. I am sure we will find the right person best suited for this important position. As you
know, this is a very busy Center and our team always perseveres to execute its operations without any glitches,
but losing a full time person for an indefinite period is never easy. I humbly ask for your patience and
understanding during this time, while we look to fill this position.
I hope all of you are enjoying the sights and sound of spring, now that it has actually arrived. Mother Nature is in
her glory and I love this time of the year. Unfortunately, my allergies have another idea, but it hardly can stop me
from marveling at all the beauty. Be well and please look at our newsletters and keep coming here to the Center
and bring your friends.
Thank you,
Sharmila

Summer is here! This is a reminder to stay hydrated and wear lightweight clothing in the hot
weather. Also, don’t forget to use sunblock! Remember the Senior Center is air conditioned if
you would like to come in and cool off. Please check on neighbors who are elderly or live alone
during times of extreme heat.
FRIENDLY VISITOR PROGRAM
Our Friendly Visitor Program is designed for residents of Braintree who are age 60 and older who
live alone, and who are lonely, homebound or isolated. You will receive home visits and follow
up telephone calls from our Friendly Visitor. The purpose of these visits is to alleviate loneliness
and isolation by having social interaction with the Friendly Visitor. The Friendly Visitor Program
is funded by a Title IIIB grant from South Shore Elder Services and by a grant from the Executive
Office of Elder Affairs. Donations to the program are also greatly appreciated and are used solely
to enrich this service. For more information, please call the Outreach Office at 781-848-1963.
LIBRARY EXPRESS PROGRAM
The Library Express Program is a service designed for residents of Braintree who are unable to
leave their homes due to a health or social service issue that lasts twelve weeks or more. It is a
partnership between the Braintree Department of Elder Affairs, Thayer Public Library and Friends
of Thayer Public Library. We offer a biweekly delivery of library materials with a limit of five
items per visit. Our Outreach Worker picks up the materials at the library, delivers them to your
home, and returns the ones from the prior visit to the library. If you or anyone you know could
benefit from this service, please give us a call at 781-848-1963.

From the Chairman of the Board Hank Joyce
It is hard to believe that it already the end of spring and summer will soon be upon us. The Red Sox are still in first place and really playing some great baseball. The Bocci court is ready to go and the players are getting warmed up for a good summer.
In June we had some fun activities at the center, like Howie Newman and his baseball show with some songs, trivia and stories and the monthly luncheon with music by Chris Waters.
Looking forward to some good places to go for a nice walk like, Wallaston Beach, Nantasket
Beach, and of course, Castle Island with a stop at Sully’s for one or two of their great hotdogs.
Now it’s time to pack to get ready to go to San Diego for some fun in the sun and a much needed vacation.
Last week we had a farewell party for Amanda who decided that it is more important to spend some good quality time with the family then to work fulltime. Not a bad idea and Amanda, we wish the best for you and your family. I hope everyone gets a chance to get out and enjoy the fine weather. If you need anything do not
hesitate call the senior center @ 781-848-1963. Be careful and be safe.
Blame the Scammers, Not the Victims
Message from Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office
When a person is victimized by a scam, the victim is often portrayed as “falling for” something. This neglects how
sophisticated scams can be and how skilled these criminals are at moving us to an emotional state, where logical thinking
takes a backseat. Here is how one recent scam played out. A scammer got hold of a credit card number and placed a
seemingly legitimate charge on her bill. In this case, it was a charge for credit monitoring services in the name of one
of the major credit bureaus.
• The victim called the 800 number listed on the charge.
• In the process of “verifying” her personal information, she realized it was fraud.
• Scammers are sophisticated – they know how to move us away from logic and into a heightened emotional state. When
we are emotional, we risk making decisions without taking time to think things through.
• Take a deep breath and pause before you take an action.
If you see a suspicious charge on your credit card statement, call the number on the back of your card and not the number
next to the suspicious charge – that number could be a direct line to the scammer.
If you end up sharing personal information that a criminal could use to open credit accounts or take out loans in your name,
contact each credit bureau and request a credit freeze. A new federal law that President Trump recently signed will make
credit freezes free to place, lift and permanently remove. Learn more about placing a credit freeze at
www.annualcreditreport.com, under Protect Your Identity.
