Editor’s NoteHej readers,

We’re dedicating this issue of IKEA FAMILY News to something dear to all of us: our planet. It’s easy to spruce up your home in a sustainable way, whether it’s through living healthier, reducing waste, or saving water and energy.

Take a leaf from this Garden City and bring some greenery into your homes. Having plants around the house (page 6-11) not only brightens the mood; you’ll have a personal supply of herbs and vegetables to use in your dishes, too. And here’s a quick tip for apartment dwellers: just stack your pots vertically to save space or grow edible herbs in hanging planters. Cutting back on your daily wastage at home is as simple as recycling, reducing and reusing (page 12-13). All you need to prevent unnecessary waste going into a landfill is to separate your recyclables from your trash with neatly marked storage boxes. Or, you could pack your own lunch to work in reusable food containers. We’ve got a foolproof jar salad recipe (page 20-21) that can be tweaked to your preference. It doesn’t matter where you start – just remember that small steps over a period of time can result in big changes. We’ll see you at IKEA if you need to pick up a handy tool or two to help you along in your journey to sustainable living!

CREATURE FEATUREIKEA 2016 SOFT TOY DRAWING COMPETITION WINNERS

A spiky purple monster, a part-dog, part-unicorn, and an egg-shaped owl – these are just three of the out-of-this-world creatures that kids entered into the third IKEA drawing competition.

After sifting through more than 70,000 entries, the jury picked these ten drawings as the winners. And they’ll all soon be brought to life as limited edition soft toys, part of the IKEA ‘Let’s Play for Change’ global campaign.

“The event creates opportunities for children to be creative and draw their dream toy,” says Bodil Fritjofsson, product developer at Children’s IKEA. “That opens up their fantasy, which really shows in the art. They really draw from their own head and don’t copy from something.”

Congratulations to all the winners from the United Arab Emirates, Poland, the US, Germany, Bulgaria, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Austria and Australia!

REUSEEvery household needs a sturdy set of reusable containers as a sustainable substitute for takeaway boxes. These microwave-safe JÄMKA food containers are ideal for storing cheese, ham, fresh fruits and leftovers. They can even be stacked inside one another if you’re low on space.

RECYCLERecycling is simple with the stackable SORTERA waste sorting bins. Dedicate one bin to a material – glass, paper and plastic are good starts – then chuck your waste into the respective bins. So the next time you make the trip to the recycling bins, your waste would have already been sorted.

REDUCESqueeze in some legwork and reduce your carbon footprint by switching up your transport routine with the lightweight SLADDA BICYCLE. Its rustproof aluminium body comes fitted with an automatic two-gear system, plus a 25-year guarantee on the frame and a ten-year guarantee on the belt drive – it’s a worthy investment for a cheaper alternative to getting ’round.

Pressed for time? Packing a home-cooked meal for work isn’t a pain when you use the VÄRDESÄTTA pressure cooker, which cuts your cooking time by up to 50% – and therefore uses less energy – while preserving the nutrients (and flavours) in your food.

• JÄMKA food container with lid, set of 4 RM11.90 0.3l and 0.5l. L20xW14, H4cm and L20xW14, H6cm.

• SORTERA waste sorting bin with lid RM49.90/each 37l. W39×D55, H28cm.

Bright and breezy, Ferhana and Hassan’s spacious five-bedroom apartment in Pasir Ris looks and feels like a tropical seaside resort. It’s no wonder they’ve nicknamed their home ‘Bohemian Bure’, after the wood and straw huts they fell in love with on a holiday to Fiji. Travel is a big source of inspiration for the creative couple – they show us how they’ve brought their dream home to life.

HAVE ROOM FOR CREATIVITY

It’s not a study but the ‘Imaginarium’ – the couple has transformed a spare room into a space where “the magic happens”, says Ferhana. “My kids and I use the room to do our craft works. And Hassan, who’s a full-time musician, creates his music in there.”

To personalise the space, she added colourful pom-poms to the woven baskets, which she uses to store all her craft materials.

GROW YOUR OWN HERBS

A full rack of green plants greets you the moment you step into their home. Ferhana is quite the avid gardener, tending to sweet basil, lemon balm, pandan and blue pea flowers. “I prefer growing herbs and edible plants that I can cook with,” she explains, adding that she hopes to include vertical greenery and hanging plants soon. For tips on how to get started on your own indoor garden, flip to page 6.

“I’m big on DIY projects, so I usually jazz up my IKEA purchases and give them to friends as gifts.”

MEMBERHOMESStepping into IKEA FAMILYmembers’ Ferhana and Hassan’s home, we’re greeted with a breezy, resort-like décor, and the couple’s two energetic, camera-ready kids.

LET THE KIDS PLAY

A large section of the living room is carved out for the kids. Na’ima, six, and Naa’il, four, do most of their drawing, painting and colouring on the well-used KRITTER table and chairs, with plenty of space to zoom around on their favourite vintage-inspired toy cars. To amp up the fun, Ferhana and Hassan installed a ceiling swing that the little ones can’t get enough of.

• KRITTER children’s table RM99 L59xW50, H50cm. White. KRITTER children’s chair RM49.90/each W27xD29, H30cm. White. FJÄLLA box with lid RM25.90 W22xD26, H16cm. Light green, spotted.

ADD POPS OF COLOUR

The family loves to entertain and host large family dinners, so a plush couch and vibrant cushions are necessary. Their best living room accessory, however, is the handwoven kelim rug Ferhana scored from IKEA. “Everyone is always surprised when I tell them it’s from IKEA,” she says. “It’s beautifully made and so easy to clean at the same time.”

• GUALÖV storage table RM179 Ø60, H47cm. Black. STOCKHOLM 2017 cushion RM59.90 L45xW45cm. Blue, check pattern.

WE ASK… MOHD HANIFF BIN INTIAZ HUSSEIN

What’s your inspiration for this tweak?

Given the limited space in our apartment, we decided that each piece of furniture must serve dual purposes. The KALLAX series was the perfect answer – we bought three sets, and installed bed legs (BRYNILEN and BURFJORD) to take away the normal bookshelf appearance.

How do you usually use this space?

The single shelf is used as TV console, while the two double shelves are used as a console table and space divider. In the KALLAX inserts and boxes, we store baby toys, extra kitchenware, extension cables, and so on. The console table works great as an extra serving table as well!

WE ASK… SERENE LIM

What’s your inspiration for this tweak?

Look! This was an IKEA photo frame… but now it’s a mirror. Mirrors are recommended in feng shui, so when I came across this elegant frame, it struck me that it’d make a stunning mirror. Plus, it creates a great talking point for this small area.

How do you usually use this space?

As you can see, this comfortable, vibrant and eye-catchingly yellow IKEA sofa nicely fits the space. It definitely makes the space a great one to relax in style with my family and friends.

Mohd Haniff used KALLAX

shelves as dividers and

for storage

TIMELESS BEDROOMS

KIDS

Instead of pieces the little ones will outgrow, these clever design ideas make your kids’ bedroom grow with them.

CUSTOM FIT If you’re looking for larger pieces of furniture to last through the years, stick to white or neutral colours. Configure the PAX wardrobe with interior fittings such as pull-out baskets, drawers and hanging bar according to the different needs of your children as they grow up.

IN THE FRAME Proudly display your kids’ art masterpieces by creating a wall collage with KNOPPÄNG photo frames. And when they get older, you can re-use the frames to display prints and photographs.

RUG AND ROLLAdapt the look of the room as the kids develop their own personality and style over the years. Add pops of colour with the KATTRUP rug, a wool carpet that’s responsibly manufactured: it’s handwoven by women from developing countries, providing them with a stable source of income.

COSY CORNERWhen your child outgrows the cot, replace it with a STUVA/FÖLJA storage bench to create a reading nook. The bench also doubles up as a storage space for books, gadgets and clothes to keep things tidy.

• KNOPPÄNG frame withposter, set of 8 RM149 Black.

• PAX wardrobe RM1,160 W100xD60, H201.2cm. Tanem white.

• STUVA/FÖLJA storage benchRM270 W90xD50, H50cm.

• KATTRUP rug RM999 L300xW200cm. Flatwoven, handmade grey.

DO IT YOURSELF

Pack a nutritious lunch with this DIY jar salad. This layered salad is easy to assemble, portable and pleasing on the eyes, too. We prepped the ingredients with a PROPPMÄTT chopping board and BLANDA MATT serving bowl, and stacked them into a KORKEN jar, whose leak-prooflid means you can bring it to the office, easy.

SALAD DAYS

Things you need:

1. Salad dressing2. Veggies such as

cucumber, carrot, tomato, corn and zucchini

3. Feta cheese4. Leafy greens5. KORKEN jar6. Spiraliser/knife/

peeler

STEP

01Dress it upThe dressing goes into the jar first. This way, the layers stay separate and the vegetables don’t get soggy. We used a simple combination of extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, a dollop of Dijon mustard, and salt and pepper to taste.

21

STEP

03Soft vegetablesand grainsSofter veggies like zucchini and corn kernels come next. For a heartier meal, add carbs like couscous, brown rice, quinoa or even cooked pasta.

AND VOILÀ!Your jar salad is good to go. Store it in the office fridge and, before tucking in, give the jar a vigorous shake to toss the salad.

STEP

04Cheese andproteinsThis layer is best for delicate ingredients that should be kept dry. Crumble in feta cheese, a hard-boiled egg or protein like shredded chicken or roast beef.

STEP

02Hard vegetables Add chopped vegetables that won’t get soggy easily. Hard, crisp vegetables like cherry tomato, cucumber, capsicum, celery and onion are great options. Root vegetables such as carrot and radish work well, too.

STEP

05Leafy greensFill the rest of the jar with leafy greens. As they’re the topmost layer in the jar, the leaves will retain their crispness for hours.

• KORKEN jar RM6.90 1l. Ø12, H16.5cm.
