BEREAVEMENT REPORT DEACONrsquoS CORNER
Admonish the Sinner In this year of mercy Pope Francis asks us to perform the Corporal and Spiritual works of mercy In Particular I find the Spir-itual work of mercy to admonish the sinner to be very difficult As Christians we have the duty to proclaim the gospel but also to de-nounce sin injustice and evil If we keep silent about admonishing the sinner we are guilty of the sin of omission the things we could have done or the words we could have said but didnt The problem with this work of mercy is that nobody wants it Who are you to tell me Im wrong Under the best conditions admonish the sinner doesnt stand much of a chance to go over very well Even when you admonish with charity and respect and smiley faces most people are just not going to clasp your hands and tearfully thank you for saving them from the abyss No Its more likely that theyll put their hands around your neck and attempt to shake you or a least want to do so At least if your words fail your humility might succeed Not now not next week not next month or year Long after the sting of correction is gone it might bear fruit In Scripture (Matt 1815-17) we see Jesus telling His disciples If your brother sins (against you) go and tell him his fault between you and him alone In the letter of James 520 we hear My brothers if anyone among you should stray from the truth --- bring him back When a Christian is instrumental in the conversion of a sin-ner the result is forgiveness of sins and a reinstatement of the sin-ner to the life of grace Deacon Terry

FOR THE 17TH YEAR KNIGHTSrsquo CHARITABLE
GIVING AND VOLUNTEER HOURS GROW
The Knights of Columbus set a new all-time record last year for charitable donations and service hours with $175079192 in donations and more than 734 million hours of service The numbers were announced at the closing session of the annual Organizational Meeting of State Deputies in New Haven
ldquoWe are very proud of these Fraternal Survey numbersrdquo Supreme Knight Anderson said ldquoThese are a clear indication that we are keeping faith with Father McGivneyrsquos principle of charity and also of unity not on-ly among ourselves but with those in need This is what we call a charity that evangelizes This is what makes Knights of Columbus differentrdquo
Supreme Knight Anderson went on to say that these rec-ords of giving perfectly illustrate the point made by Father Tomasz Kraj Poland Associate State Chaplain and Theo-logian in Residence at the Saint John Paul II National Shrine in his homily during the Mass that preceded the closing session Father Kraj said that the world needs more men who pay witness through their actions to what it means to be a Catholic
ldquoWe are answering Pope Francisrsquo call to go to the periph-eriesrdquo the supreme knight said ldquoWe can reach half way around the globe to help those in need and we can reach
to our neighbor next door And we do that every day That makes us witnesses to the faithrdquo
The number of service hours rose by more than a million over the previous yearrsquos total according to the Knights of Columbus Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity for the year ending Dec 31 2015 Donations grew by more than $15 million since 2014 achieving an increase in giving for the 17th consecutive year
The top ten jurisdiction in charitable giving (from highest) were Texas California Florida Quebec Illinois Michi-gan Ontario New York Missouri and New Jersey For volunteer hours the top ten were Luzon North Texas Illi-nois Florida California Luzon South Ontario Michigan Visayas and Pennsylvania
Supreme Knight Anderson pointed out that while these numbers are impressive jurisdiction leaders need to fo-cus now on ensuring that the Order grows in charitable giving and volunteer service during the coming 2016-17 fraternal year
The Knights continued to support their local communities in 2015 through such programs as aid to Christians at Risk Coats for Kids the Food for Families initiative and blood drives Knights also gave assistance to Habitat for Humanity the Global Wheelchair Mission and other large-scale charitable organizations

Archbishop Gomez Statement On US Supreme Court Decision In
United States V Texas June 24 2016 - By Archbishop Gomez
Our nationrsquos ongoing failure to address the immigration crisis is a humanitarian
tragedy
For more than a decade state and local governments Congress the President
the courts mdash and now the highest court in the land mdash all have failed in their re-
sponsibilities to address this issue
In the wake of todayrsquos US Supreme Court decision I call on President Obama
and Congress to agree to halt deportations pending the outcome of the national
elections this fall This would be a humanitarian gesture that would provide tem-
porary relief and peace of mind to millions of our brothers and sisters including
millions of children
Now is once more the time for moral leadership and political courage We need
to reject all those who would exploit this issue for their own partisan advantage
mdash and we should be clear that both parties continue to be guilty of this
We need comprehensive immigration reform now This is not a matter of poli-
tics it is a matter of defending human rights and protecting human dignity
Immigration is about people It is a sad sign of our political moment that we
need to keep reminding ourselves about this
We are talking about brothers and sisters with faces and names and families
and stories mdash just like every one of us Often their journey has been hard and
they have suffered poverty exploitation and sorrow Many have been forced to
leave behind loved ones mdash parents spouses children
Immigration reform is an issue of conscience and national identity We need to
remember where we came from Almost every American is the son or the
daughter of someone who came to this country from somewhere else Our hu-
manity will be judged by our response to this new generation of immigrants
To our immigrant brothers and sisters who are suffering from the cruelty and
uncertainty caused by this broken immigration system please know that the
Catholic Church will never abandon you You are our family We will continue to
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Some say tomatomdashand some say tomahtomdashyou know the old song What
do you say when you arrive at church and see a font prepared a baby in
the wings the paschal candle burning Well maybe you will say that
ldquowersquore having a baptism todayrdquo or maybe you say ldquowe are having a chris-
teningrdquo The proper term is baptism since that is the name of the sacrament But the persistent use of
ldquochristeningrdquo in our culture probably from due to the influence of the Episcopal Church is interesting
Baptism an ancient word is from the Greek meaning to dip or to dunk Christening is an Old English word
that describes perfectly well that more than getting splashed with water the person being baptized is being
ldquoChrist-edrdquo No matter what you call it therersquos always water involved and then an anointing with chrismmdash
fragrant olive oil consecrated as a sign of Christrsquos presencemdashpoured upon the brow as we say ldquoAs Christ was
anointed Priest Prophet and King so may you live always as a member of his body sharing everlasting liferdquo
So in being Christ-ed you are conformed to his image your life is expected to be a retelling of his life in
miniature and youmdasheven though you may be squirming or sleepingmdashare commissioned to be a priest a
prophet a king This means that you are called to be one who worships you are called to speak the truth you
are called to shape the world and exercise right judgment That is the deepest treasure of our tradition and
every time you gather to celebrate a baptism you renew your vows precisely so that you can be more ldquoChrist-
edrdquo No matter what vocabulary you assign to the liturgy the key is transformation of the human person in the
community of the Body of Christ

INSURANCE REPORT
A new fraternal year is upon us Congratulations to the
newly elected and appointed council leaders Irsquom sure you have
a list of things that you want to accomplish during the coming
year Irsquom eager to help
One of these goals is the attainment of the Star Council award the most prestigious award the Order offers at the coun-cil level Irsquom certainly committed to helping on the insurance side but Irsquoll be glad to help on the membership side as well
If you know an eligible Catholic man who might be inter-ested in joining the Order (and who among us doesnrsquot) hersquos probably just waiting to be asked I can help you either by ap-proaching him myself or by ldquocoachingrdquo you transferring sales skills that you can use to recruit himand other prospects As al-ways Irsquom at your service
What would be helpful to all of us would be an early start
on these those goals rather than waiting until May or June
Letrsquos get an early start on award season this year

Calling all inventors Itrsquos been said that necessity is the mother of invention
Wheres the story4 Points Mentioned
While this proverb is frequently true I can say from my time in the consumer
products industry that it isnrsquot always the case
Based upon marketplace staying power Ben-Gay aspirin Quisp and Quake
cereals and New Coke werenrsquot really necessities The mothers of invention in
those cases were probably the potential for higher profit margins or expanded
product categories in some cases they may have been a brand managerrsquos
crazy idea that just went too far
Not being necessities I suppose these products never withstood the test of
time
With so many people in our society entering seniorhood mothers (and fa-
thers) of invention will have lots of opportunities to devise new ways to ad-
dress the needs of an aging population
Listed below is a small sampling of little inventions that have made a big dif-
ference in the lives of those on the other side of 50
For people with failing eyesight a $199 iPhone app called the EyeReader
turns an iPhone into a lighted magnifying glass Since smartphones are al-
most everyonersquos permanent personal accessory these days scrambling for
forgotten reading glasses to scan the restaurant dinner menu may be a thing
of the past
For those who leave doctor visits not remembering what the doctor said
therersquos a handy tool called a USB Pen Drive Digital Audio Voice Recorder
Priced at about $9 this tiny device records hours of content and replays it
when plugged into a computer Today in the peace and privacy of your own
home you or a loved one can listen again to your doctorrsquos instructions
For those whose balance is a bit wobbly suction-grip shower grab bars offer
great support and added safety Hanging onto a grab bar while washing your
feet gives new meaning to the word self-reliance
THE OTHER SIDE OF 50 The other side of 50 continued
And for those who are continence challenged new products like Depend Sil-
houette for Women Depend Real Fit for Men and Prevail Boxers offer thin-
ner more comfortable pairs of disposable briefs that look and feel like cotton
underwear As one of the ads says these new products can make wearing a
different kind of underwear no big deal
Oftentimes the unsung mothers of invention turn out to be sons daughters
and other family caregivers who are experimenting to find the right solution to
a loved onersquos needs
Just last week I had the joy of visiting my mom and dad in New Hampshire
My dad a great lover of tools wanted us to take him to Harbor Freight in
Nashua With my husband pushing my dad in his wheelchair and me in tow I
began to look at the tool store as an inventorrsquos war chest
For a long while I have been looking for a buzzer that my dad can use to call
my mom when hersquos woken up from a nap
Parkinsonrsquos has taken away my dadrsquos ability to get out of bed on his own and
his voice has diminished also a result of Parkinsonrsquos so shouting to my mom
is not an option
Up until now my dad has used a little device that makes a clicking sound to
call my mom It works if my mom is sitting quietly but if the TV is on or she is
cooking itrsquos hard to hear
As I walked the tool store serendipity struck
I stumbled across a doorbell for $11 which made a loud but pleasant sound I
brought it home and fastened the button to my dadrsquos bed rail I then added
batteries to the chime box and placed it in the TV room
My dad pressed the button and holy cowmdasha beautiful tone emerged that was
loud enough for my mom to hear Whatrsquos even better is that my mom can
bring the chime box with her to the basement to the front porch or to the
backyard
It seemed so simple I am not sure why we never thought of it before I know
there are many mothers of invention out there This is your call to ring your
bell for seniors everywhere
Send a great idea (or two) that yoursquove discovered while solving the needs of
an aging loved toacornseniorconcernsorg With your permission they will
be printed in a future column
