Driver Training: Peter Copland.

The Driver Training group has now had a couple of meetings – in their opinion training should not have been

suspended. Now fixed most errors and missing pieces.

Peter is a trainer for the Association, rather than the Club, and may train members from other Clubs. Will keep advised when the training is up and running again.

Social Co-ordinator: By Dennis Smith

24 May – Social Ten Pin Bowling – a great time was had by all.

Merchandise/PR Officer’s report: Advised by Anne Haylock

Will need to order more club shirts soon – these are to replace/update the normal club shirts. There are only a few of

the old style shirts remaining and new ones will need to be ordered for new members etc.

Prices: 25-50 $39.90 or 51 – 100 $36.57.

Should the shirts be sold to club members at $40.00 or $45.00 (to give the club a little profit).

Just a reminder – these are not a compulsory buy...... they are just restocking and replacing the old style shirts. The old

shirts will be eventually phased out as they wear out!

2. Club memberships due on 1st July

3. Royce is now looking after the website (with Gerard’s assistance).

4. Ian Drewett discussed the 4WDQLD recent meeting:

Kris Humphrys, 4WDQLD President, sent email to all clubs outlining the proposal to engage a marketing company,

“9 Strategic” with the view to market better the Association. The Association needs to go in a new direction to

attract new members.

Cost of this marketing is $30,000.00 all up over 4 months.

Qld Association approached the Australian Association for a loan and grant to assist with the cost of the

marketing. The Australian Association said no, but that they would come up and do a workshop with Qld.

Why should 4WDQLD be part of 4WD Aust?

Why should Clubs be part of 4WDQLD?

Why should any member be a part of a Club?

Ian disapproved of their attitude at the last meeting, where it was suggested that Qld pull out of the Australian

Association. Ian will take our Club’s decision to the next Reps meeting.

One of the advantages of being part of the Association is discounted insurance and driver training.

Peter Copland: 4WDQLD used to have a budget of $300,000.00. Now less than $100,000.00. What are they

spending it on?

Ian: Association budget is slowing going backwards. Approximately $50,000.00 spent on hall upgrade, which is

required under the BCC lease.

Association have proposed to raise funds for:

Full time driver training coordinator approx $85,000.00

Secretary and/or social media representative – approx $50,000.00

Association is non-entity – why does it need to make money?

51 clubs – only 3 clubs are fully training clubs.

Costs of running Association – Hall, insurance, administration

Cost of driver training: Application fee each year to RTO $3300 Registration fees $650/yr Production of Certificate $20 Quality indicator $1000 Printing $100 Site Assessment cost $1100 Card Printing machine $2000

Limited amount of people to train – most club relies on new members for training

Schedule fee for training $180.00.

There are other options for training.

Mark Dixon asked if we needed to be affiliated to 4WDQLD to be covered by public liability insurance?

Ian – there is a clause which says we must be. Sourcing quotes from other insurance companies.

Page 5: JULY 2015 NEWSLETTER · marketing. The Australian Association said no, but that they would come up and do a workshop with Qld. Why should 4WDQLD be part of 4WD Aust? Why should Clubs

Do we need to be part of 4WDQLD to do driver training? Yes. We can make a training package work.

Do people actually find our club through 4WDQLD? Hayden and Ross did.

Bob Goring: Is training under Australian banner?

The Association is not the trainer as such.

What was the attraction to be part of the Association?

Originally insurance and driver training, but insurance has changed providers a couple of times recently, it may

have changed.

Milko asked if Kris has other motives for the marking plan?

No vested interest.

Hayden: Could we rejoin the Association if we left and decided to go back? Yes

Mark Dixon: We need more information as to why we should remain.

Des Baker: why do we need to market clubs? New members – young members don’t like rules and regulations.

That’s why they join social medical groups

Gail: What is 4WDQLD getting out of this? Why did this discussion arise? Are they spitting the dummy?

Ian Haylock: can we join caravan and camping groups?

The Association is looking to market those type of groups – most of them drive 4wds.

Sarah: Why did we trust 12 people or Club Reps to spend all the money?

Decision on behalf of the Clubs.

Scott Russell: we need to find out more info.

Ian is to ask for more information before voting.

Why did 4WDAust refuse our request? No reason seems to be forthcoming.

When did the committee make the decision to spend the money?

Why didn’t this come back to meeting to make decision?

Ian to send email to Club members after next Reps meeting with result.

Ian to send email to Australia Association to ask what the Association does for our Club?

HOW TO WRITE A TRIP REPORT

This guide has been prepared to assist those writing trip reports for publication in the Twin Rivers 4X4 Club Newsletter. I hope these notes will encourage you and give you some ideas and provide the basic structure required so we can achieve a high standard and quality for the reader. OBJECTIVE The prime objective is to generate trip reports describing locations and trips you have been on so that other club members can experience them second hand. We are looking for trip reports about either individual experiences or your latest club trip/holiday. What we would really appreciate is useful information about what you did and saw as you visited various locations on your trip. BASIC FORMAT We need a fairly detailed report on your trip, preferably supported by photographs. You may find it easiest if you try to tell the story of what happened on your trip. You may find it useful to look at the trip reports already published. Some of these trip reports are quite detailed, but this will not be necessary for every destination. Please just send us your thoughts and impressions gained as a result of your experiences, together with the basic facts and details. Ideally your report should be in Microsoft Word or any other suitable word processor. Do not worry too much about the layout, we will do that. In fact, avoid any special formatting of the text or paragraph styles. STYLE Try to keep your report light and informative. Give details of what you actually did and experienced, so other members know what happened. We would like to hear about locations, warts and all. Essentially, we want others to feel as if they were there. You might think of things as "If only I had known that before I went". CONTENT Here is a list of some of the areas you might cover: Note - not all of these will be used in all trip reports.

Where did you go?

When did you go?

How did you get there?

Who went on the trip?

How long was the trip? What happened 1st day, 2nd day etc?

What happened? Who did what?

What was the driving like? Explain the major features?

Were there any difficulties or local hazards to note?

Where did you stay? What were the campsites like?

What happened at camp/night?

Is the location seasonal and when is it best to go?

What other activities were available and did you use any?

Did you do anything special whilst there? Are there special attractions there?

What was the weather like? Is that typical?

How does this location compare with others to which you have been?

How much did the trip cost? Have you got any cost saving tips? PHOTOGRAPHY We would love to see photographs to support and illustrate your report. However, please be selective, we don't want literally dozens of them! Ideally, they should illustrate the locality, facilities, driving, recoveries and members. They do not have to be your own photographs, but they should be taken during your trip EDITING Although we hope to avoid editing trip reports as far as possible, some "adjustments" may be inevitable. Obviously comments that are libelous or defamatory are not acceptable and will be removed before publication. If there was a problem with some aspect of your trip, then we do want to know about it. However, please ensure that you are strictly factual about what happened. Don't worry about the actual layout of the article; we will adapt it to our standard report format.

Page 11: JULY 2015 NEWSLETTER · marketing. The Australian Association said no, but that they would come up and do a workshop with Qld. Why should 4WDQLD be part of 4WD Aust? Why should Clubs

SUBMITTING TRIP REPORTS You should preferably submit trip reports and photographs electronically as attachments to an email. PLEASE REMEMBER if you are able to create a trip report then please do so. If you are unable or not comfortable writing a report then please answer as many of the questions above as appropriate, send them in dot point form along with your photographs so that I can create a story.

After setting up camp and a get to know you session we headed off for a drive. Janowen was quite busy meaning all the usual close to camp play areas were quite crowded with a bit of a line up.

Page 15: JULY 2015 NEWSLETTER · marketing. The Australian Association said no, but that they would come up and do a workshop with Qld. Why should 4WDQLD be part of 4WD Aust? Why should Clubs

Although we managed a play in all of these areas, with our largish convoy we headed away from the crowds and spent most of the weekend exploring the outer reaches of the park.

We were lucky enough to find a couple of new tracks as well as quite a few others that obviously had not seen any traffic in a long time.

While we were out we managed to find a bit of firewood, about three ute loads, we thought there was a possibility it might get cold that night. It is quite possible you could see our fire from Brisbane, or the moon.

BEFORE

AFTER

The happy hour(s) and nights by the fire were worth the trip alone. The Downs members are a great bunch of people and we spent the evenings sharing laughter, food and drinks.

Page 17: JULY 2015 NEWSLETTER · marketing. The Australian Association said no, but that they would come up and do a workshop with Qld. Why should 4WDQLD be part of 4WD Aust? Why should Clubs

Peter’s side story; Sunday lunchtime, I was sitting outside enjoying my lunch in the sun (did we mention how cold it was) when I was captivated by some strange goings on in the Downs Club camp. They had driven the Triton up to where they had just moved a swag. They appeared to be banging something into the ground with a large hammer and then connecting the winch to it. I could see the front of the ute being pulled down before the winch let go and it bounced up again. This strange procedure continued for some twenty minutes before I could stand it no longer. What the heck were they doing? Trying to straighten a control arm, doing something to the winch? I wandered over to give my support and offer advice and expertise. On my arrival the mystery was explained. They had found a tentpeg that had been left behind in the ground, and had decided to remove it, obviously for the sake of the environment. About ten minutes later, after much more digging, banging and winching this elusive peg finally revealed itself. There it was, a run of the mill, slightly bent 20cm, standard tentpeg. After their resounding success with this mission the Downs Club decided to form a dedicated “Peg Removal Team”. When I asked what they intended doing with the peg, they spoke of simply throwing it away. I could not allow such an inglorious end to this peg after putting up such a determined fight for freedom. I told them of our own clubs trophy, a broken CV, and suggested perhaps they could do something similar. They took the peg away amid mutterings of “Trophy”. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have been able to witness this incredible team of environmental heroes in action.

The Downs 4WD Club “Peg Removal Team” in action All in all a great weekend was had by everyone. A special thank you to Dianne for organising the interclub trip and to Martin as trip leader.

Training Course Introduction

The Twin Rivers 4X4 Club has been conducting Accredited Driver Training courses for its members since 2005. As our club is a not for profit organization our driver training courses represent excellent value for money but most importantly, instruct owners of 4WD vehicles in the skills required to safely pilot their vehicle both on and off the road. The Trainers and Assessors are accredited under the guidelines set by the 4WDQLDTraining. As a minimum the main driver from each membership must complete the course within 6 months of joining “Twin Rivers 4X4 Club” unless specific approval is granted by the Training Coordinator and the Management Committee The course is competency based. There are theory sessions as well as driving sessions, which include written and practical tests. It is not designed to teach experience, which comes only after many years of actually driving in conditions that your vehicle is designed for. The course will teach you the basic principles of Safety, Trip Preparation, Vehicle Maintenance and Servicing, along with knowledge of the fundamentals of a 4WD and the vehicles capabilities as well as basic driving techniques and recovery procedures. Each course is broken up into theory and practical components designed to educate the most experienced member. Courses consist of 2 theory nights to familiarise participants with 4WD vehicles, discuss how they work and how to inspect them for basic faults. Theory components cover many aspects of driving. Some of these subjects include: Vehicle types and capabilities How a 4WD works Tyre selection, inflation and use Pre-trip and during trip vehicle equipment and safety inspections Environmental Awareness Different techniques for driving in varying terrains The practical component consists of a full weekend where participants have the opportunity to learn and experience all of the different aspects of basic 4WDing in the field. Some of the topics covered on the weekend training include: Principles of 4WDriving Stop stall key start recoveries Driving up and down moderate inclines Driving techniques for different terrains Approach, departure and ramp over angles Driving on side slopes Driving through water Changing a tyre in uneven terrain Snatch strap recoveries Driving to cause minimal environmental impact Using Convoy Procedure

It is really easy to lead a trip.

Any trip leader can be approached by a member of the club and asked if they would like an assistant on their trip. The trip leader and assistant could work together on the organization, layout, rating of the trip, leading and tail ending. You don’t have to be an experienced 4 wheel driver to lead a trip, if you have a place you love to go you could approach a friend in the club who has run a trip before and suggest to them that you could buddy up or co-lead a trip, you set the rating, you make the time. Once you’ve led a trip you’ll never go back to following someone else. For more information about procedures, forms and ideas for trip destinations, contact one of your committee members.
