SDTA’s Safety Management Council Goes The Extra Mile At The June MeetingA special thank you Jennifer Raddatz, Safety Director for K&J Trucking, Inc., in Sioux Falls, for coming up with such a simple yet brilliant idea!

Jennifer called the SDTA office the Friday before the scheduled monthly meeting of the SDTA Safety Management Council. On the third Tuesday of each month, the SDTA Safety Management Council gathers at the Roll’n Pin Restaurant, in Sioux Falls for their “meeting of the minds.” This meeting gives the Council Members the opportunity to discuss the safety issues affecting the industry.

Jennifer came up with the idea that instead of buying our lunches at the Roll’n Pin like we do each month, we could each pack a lunch and gather at the SDTA office with a $10 cash dona-tion. The money would be given to the Salvation Army to assist in the clean-up efforts following the tornado in Wessington Springs.

The idea took off! When we called the Roll’n Pin to let them know that we would not be meet-ing for lunch the following Tuesday, explaining our agenda, the restaurant donated $50 to our cause.

We had several members of the Safety Council that were not able to at-tend the meeting. They made a call to the SDTA office to let us know they would be sending in a cash donation anyway.

It was amazing to see how quickly we gathered to help those in need! The Council was able to give a check to the Salvation Army for $276 that same afternoon. It’s not going to rebuild the town, but it’s a small step in the right direction to take care of those in need.

I am truly proud of the people that I have the priviledge to work with. This is just one perfect example of why!

“You don’t know the worth of water until the well is dry.”I remember reading that statement many years ago and the “water” was meant to be symbolic of “driv-ers”. We have heard the words of caution about the looming driver shortage and most of the carriers have felt that impact for many years already and it is certainly nothing new. However the shortage finally seems to have become a greater focal point outside our industry. The trucking industry has known this situation was worsening but the rest of the country was not paying much attention to the matter. I see

that starting to change. When shipments are more frequently delayed to factories and store fronts, the average American is going to become much more aware of the importance of the trucking industry and the importance of the professional men and women who sit behind the wheels of the “big rigs”.

There is obviously no magic pill for this one. It is going to be an ongoing challenge in our industry and will give recruiters plenty of job security. SDTA has continually placed a great deal of importance on honoring drivers in our state. I hope that our society as a whole begins to gain a greater appreciation for this segment of the workforce as well. Over the years, professional drivers were known as the “knights of the road” as they aided stranded commuters and changed flat tires for the elderly or young mothers along-side the road. Now they may be viewed as the “knights of the road” because they keep our factories supplied with the raw products needed for production, and keep food on the shelves of the grocery store and fuel to the gas stations and medical sup-plies to hospitals – basic services we as a country have taken for granted for a very very long time.

Hopefully, another side of this is that the drivers themselves will gain a greater sense of pride in what they do as they see the importance they have on the economic impact of our country.

Another issue that we as an industry have been focusing on is the highway funding. Along with the driver shortage, highway funding is now hitting mainstream press as well. It is interesting to note that our industry has been beating these drums for a long time and the general public is now starting to see what we have been talking about for a number of years. Our industry heavily impacts our economy and our country is starting to get a better picture of that. ATA’s new image campaign, “Trucking Moves America Forward” may be very well timed.

But…. I don’t want to focus on the negative. These are challenges we need to address and understand but at the same time we have a lot of “upside” and opportunities as well. SDTA continues to be one of those “upsides” and one of our great events for the year is our annual convention that will be held in Rapid City in early September. Mark your calendars as I am sure it will be another great convention that you won’t want to miss!

I hope everyone has a chance to take a break this summer with some well-deserved vacation time. I know “Sturgis” is on my radar! Have fun and be safe!

While you are reading this column, I am prob-ably headed to Mt. Washington, NH to attend the annual meeting of the Trucking Association Executives Council (TAEC). The meeting gives all trucking executives from around the country a time to compare successes and failures in their state association. In addition, it gives us a chance to get on the same page concerning federal issues and other challenges facing the trucking industry. This meeting is an annual “recharge” that all state executives seem to need.

The association events held last month all were a success. The SDTA Board meeting was well attended and contained some great discussion. The Cliff Tjaden Fishing event was a great time while also raising some funds. We finished the month with the West River golf event and the annual poker run in Rapid City. Congratulations to all winners of these events and a big thanks for all members that attended.

As you know, Mother Nature caused us to postpone our Associate Apprecia-tion Golf Fundraiser scheduled for June 17th in Brandon. However, the event was rescheduled for July 31st with check-in at 8:00 a.m. followed by a shot-gun start at 9:00 a.m. We are hoping that everyone that was scheduled to golf on the 17th of June will be able to attend on the 31st of July. I hope to see many of you in Brandon.

Please plan to attend the 2014 SDTA Annual Convention in Rapid City. Every member was recently sent all registration materials. There will be some great speakers conducting the seminars along with the usual great food, fun, en-tertainment and visiting with friends. Please plan to join us on September 3, 4 & 5.

2014 is an election year! We will be electing or re-electing the entire state legislature along with a Governor, an Attorney General, a Secretary of State, a US Representative and a US Senator. On the state level, a legislative sum-mer study is holding hearings regarding highway funding. I attended and provided testimony at the July 1st hearing in Sioux Falls. I am convinced there will be a highway funding tax increase bill proposed during the 2015 session of the South Dakota Legislature. If you have not contributed to Truck PAC, please consider sending a contribution to the SDTA Office. We need to fund the campaigns of people that are informed of the needs of the trucking industry.

REMEMBER: Get involved and stay involved!

We have some new log haulers members that start their South Dakota Trucking Association membership this month. Welcome to the new mem-bers and thank you for your support! We hope you will always see the val-ue, not only in membership but also in the importance of having a voice on a local, state and federal level. To complain about an issue and not do

something to change it, will most definitely not bring positive results. We will not always see the changes we would like but at least we will be heard on all issues that affect us.

Last month I touched on the amendment Senator Susan Collins from Maine introduced to suspend implementation of the two consecutive rest periods of 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. contained in the 34 hour restart provisions of the hours of service rules. I had the time and opportunity to listen to her address to the Senate floor and was very impressed with her argument however Senator Booker from New Jersey also addressed the Senate floor with opposition to the amendment. I have to question if the amendment would have been opposed at all, had it not been for the Walmart truck hitting the limousine carrying television celebrities resulting in one death and other injuries. Sadly the amendment was pulled from the Senate floor. As a result, we go back to putting an overwhelming number of trucks back on the roads at 5:00 a.m. going into one of the busiest times on our roads. I am so glad that for the most part the log haulers are within the 100 air mile radius and are able to account for our time with the time card.

Last month Bruce Votroubek, Al Votroubek and myself participated in the SDTA fishing Calcutta and had a great time; we even held up the age old tradition of telling a few fish-ing tales. Thanks again Bruce and Al for the extra bit of help needed getting in and out.

I am not sure who all participated in the West River golf outing or poker run or even know how the weather was. Being laid up afforded me some valuable time to go visit grandchil-dren. Thanks to everyone that did participate in these events. I am sure you had a great time!

The annual SDTA convention is coming up on September 3rd, 4th and 5th in Rapid City. There is a lot to participate in at this annual event, so if you can’t make it to the entire convention, please try to attend as many activities and events that fit your schedule.

IMPROVING THE HUMAN CONDITION

pumping the brakesKeeping diabetes at bay and in checkBy: Vishal Bhatia, MD - Sanford Diabetes and Thyroid Clinic

In the past few years, the prevalence of diabetes has increased dramatically. It is estimated that five to 10 percent of the American population have type 2 diabetes. And while that number is high, it is nothing compared to the possible 25 percent of the population who are either undiagnosed or have pre-diabetes.

While many people are genetically predisposed to developing diabetes, for most, type 2 diabetes is the result of leading an unhealthy lifestyle. A limited amount of exercise combined with a poor diet will result in weight gain. This accumula-tion of weight will cause your body to become resistant to the insulin produced by your pancreas. Insulin’s job is to control your blood sugar. So when your body needs more insulin to control the increased blood sugar, the pancreas has to work extra hard. But the pancreas can only do the extra work for so long.

When your blood sugar is constantly high, it can do damage to the blood vessels and nerves throughout your body. It can cause numbness or tingling in the limbs, retinal detachment and increase your risk for heart disease and heart attack. You may also feel excessively thirsty or extremely tired and may frequently have the urge to urinate. Diabetes can cause lower testosterone levels in men and is associated with sleep apnea and high blood pressure and cholesterol.

Always best to checkIf you think you may be at risk for developing diabetes, talk to your doctor. Your primary care physician will be able to perform simple tests to see if you are diabetic.

The earlier you receive a diagnosis; the easier it is to control your diabetes. With a proper diet and exercise routine, many patients are able to manage their symptoms quite easily. There are also a number of new medications available in both oral and shot form that can help control blood sugar. Your physician will also be able to refer you to an endocrinologist and other specialists who will help you throughout your diagnosis and beyond.

Keep on drivingMany of my diabetic patients fear that they will lose their licenses if they have to be on insulin. However that is not the case. Through the South Dakota Department of Transportation, you can request paperwork for an insulin exemption. This will require you to submit data every three months certifying that you are managing your diabetes properly.

In order to make sure you can stay on the road, you’ll need to make a few adjustments to your lifestyle. Trucking is a fairly sedentary occupation, but try to exercise every time you stop. Even if it’s just a few laps around the parking lot, it can add up over time and make a difference. I’ve even met some truckers who have installed treadmills in their rigs so they can walk wherever they stop.

The next step is to get your diet under control. Truck stops are notorious for unhealthy options. The aisles are usually filled

with junk food that is high in empty calories. And fast food isn’t any better. The best thing is to pack your own healthy meals each day.

If you are having trouble controlling your diabetes, there are other measures you can discuss with your doctor. Bariatric surgery is very effective for weight loss. Patients who have had the procedure have improved their health on multiple fronts and often can stop taking many of their medications, including insulin.

Whether you are diabetic, pre-diabetic or in great shape, the best thing you can do for your health is get enough exercise and eat nutritionally balanced meals. These two simple practices will help you feel better, prevent disease and keep you on the road for years to come.
