Building Community Debating Our Future

Recently,theChamberofCommercehostedtheall-candidatesdebatefortheprovincialelection.It’sarolethattheChamberhasperformedformanyyears,inpartnershipwithTheERA.Asaneutralparty,theChamberprovidesopportunitiesforcandidatestosharetheirviewsonkeyissues,suchasgrowth,changingdemographicsandashiftingeconomicbase.

Thechallengeofhostingdebatesisgettingtotheheartofcandidateviewsspecifictothecommunity,andcoveringthewiderangeofissuesthatpeoplearepassionateabout.TheChamberandTheERAworktogethertoaskforquestionsfromthecommunity.ThesequestionsarereviewedbyaneutralgroupofvolunteerBoardmembers,andthenareusedtoguidethedebate.

FortheupcomingmunicipalelectiononOctober27th,wewillbeaskingthecandidatestosharetheirspecificviewsonkeyquestions,andtheirresponseswillbepublishedtotheChamberwebsite.

AsweworkthroughplansforthenextcandidatedebateonOctober7thattheNewmarketTheatreforourmunicipalelections,weareaskingforyourfeedbackonhowwecanimprovethedebate.Withmostpositionsbeingcontested,themunicipalracethisyearwillbesuretobringdivergentviewsoneconomicdevelopment,infrastructureinvestments,budgets,taxesandservices.

TheweatherwasperfectforSmartCommuteCentralYork’s8thAnnualBiketoWorkDayonMay26.Over170peoplecycledtoRiverwalkCommonsinNewmarketandweretreatedtoadeliciousbreakfastandafreet-shirt.OneofthosecyclistswasYorkRegion’sCommunityEngagementCoordinator,MichellewhocoordinatedtheTap’dInWaterMobiletrailertobeonhandandprovidecyclistswithfreshdrinkingwater.

“As with many other cyclists who attended Bike to Work Day, I had other commitments that morning. After the event came to a close, I had to race back to a Commissioner’s breakfast and because so many York Region employees biked to work, our bike racks were full and I had to find a different spot to ‘park.’ As a result, I didn’t have time to change before going to the breakfast. Unbeknownst to me, I received an award from the Commissioner in front of a large group in my yoga capris and my ‘Bike To Work Day’ t-shirt! It was definitely a memorable moment we are still laughing about!” WethinkMichellelooksamazinginBiketoWorkDayblue!Approximately325cyclistsfromtheSmartCommuteCentralYorkNetworkcycledtoworkorschoolthatday,including52YorkRegionemployees.

Recently,theTownofNewmarketanditspartnershostedateamofexpertsfromUScitiesthathavedeployedGigabitnetworksinpartnershipwiththeprivatesector.Meetingwithbusinessowners,developersandcommunityleaders,conceptswereexploredastohowaleadingedge,highspeednetworkcouldsupportthelongtermstrategicplansforthecommunity.AGigabitcommunityisonethathasultra-fastInternetconnectivityforresidentsandbusinesses,typicallymorethan100timesfasterthanwhatiscommerciallyavailable.IntheUS,GooglehasbeeninstrumentalinchangingtheInternetlandscape,workingwithcitiessuchasKansas,AustinandSaltLaketofundamentallyadvanceconnectivityinfrastructureoutsideoftraditionalmodels.Internationally,othercitiesinSingapore,NewZealand,Australia,KoreaandFrancehaveinvestedinGigabitinfrastructuresfortheireconomicdevelopmentpriorities.
