It is that time of year when many United Methodist churches experience a transition in pastoral leadership. It always happens following Holston Annual Conference (June 10-13) and it always happens on a Wednesday (this year, June 20). As most of you know, Trinity has not been spared being a part of that process this year, and that is why I am writing this article. Transitions are hard. Many congregations are grieving the loss of one pastor and simultaneously welcoming a new pastor. Two emotions experienced side by side. It is a strange phenomenon, unique to our tradition, but one to which we have grown accustomed. Both Wheeler UMC and Trinity UMC are doing just that this year. I do covet your prayers for my family as we make this transition, just as I have been praying for you. As I have looked back on my years in pastoral ministry, I have made this journey six times in three different states. This will be #7. None have been fun. Lots of tears have been shed. I come to you from Wheeler UMC in Blountville, TN where I served as pastor for the past nine years. Though I do grieve that loss, I do look forward to being your pastor and getting to know everyone here. It is a huge privilege for me to serve as anyone’s pastor. I still stand in awe of the fact that the Lord called me to this work. I know you grieve the loss of David Brannock. I count him to be a friend in ministry and deeply appreciate his work in extending hospitality and grace in making this transition as smooth as possible. In September, the Holston Conference will welcome a new Bishop. We say goodbye to Bishop Swanson and will say hello to a yet to be named Bishop. Best of all, through all these transitions, our Lord will be with us. As most of you know, our agenda will be somewhat fixed by the “Call to Action”, a ministry plan which has come down from our denomination, and calls us to focus on some areas where we may not normally or naturally would have focused. Another transition! Before we can do that effectively, we have to get to know one another a bit and one way you can help me with that is participating with me in a setting that I am calling “Listening Posts”. You will have the opportunity to stop by on Sunday afternoons and help me to get to know you, and thus the congregation, a little better. It might even help me to remember you name faster! During those times, you can ask me any question you like and I will try to answer . Your homework will be to consider these questions: 1) What brought you to Trinity UMC, 2) What keeps you here and, 3) If you had a magic wand and could change one thing about our church, what would it be? There will be other questions, but that is your homework. You may sign up for these 30 minute slots on Sunday mornings, and I will be praying that these will be productive times for us. I look forward to seeing you Sunday. Your fellow servant in Christ, Pastor Stuart

JULY

2012

Pastor’s Remarks

TRANSITIONS

As I write this, I am at my desk in Kingsport sitting in a sea of boxes and thinking about a big transition

ahead. It is that time of year when many United Methodist churches experience a transition in pastoral

leadership. It always happens following Holston Annual Conference (June 10-13) and it always happens

on a Wednesday (this year, June 20). As most of you know, Trinity has not been spared being a part of

that process this year, and that is why I am writing this article. Transitions are hard. Many

congregations are grieving the loss of one pastor and simultaneously welcoming a new pastor. Two

emotions experienced side by side. It is a strange phenomenon, unique to our tradition, but one to

which we have grown accustomed. Both Wheeler UMC and Trinity UMC are doing just that this year.

I do covet your prayers for my family as we make this transition, just as I have been praying for you.

As I have looked back on my years in pastoral ministry, I have made this journey six times in three

different states. This will be #7. None have been fun. Lots of tears have been shed. I come to you

from Wheeler UMC in Blountville, TN where I served as pastor for the past nine years. Though I do

grieve that loss, I do look forward to being your pastor and getting to know everyone here. It is a huge

privilege for me to serve as anyone’s pastor. I still stand in awe of the fact that the Lord called me to

this work. I know you grieve the loss of David Brannock. I count him to be a friend in ministry and

deeply appreciate his work in extending hospitality and grace in making this transition as smooth as

possible. In September, the Holston Conference will welcome a new Bishop. We say goodbye to

Bishop Swanson and will say hello to a yet to be named Bishop. Best of all, through all these

transitions, our Lord will be with us.

As most of you know, our agenda will be somewhat fixed by the “Call to Action”, a ministry plan which

has come down from our denomination, and calls us to focus on some areas where we may not normally

or naturally would have focused. Another transition! Before we can do that effectively, we have to get

to know one another a bit and one way you can help me with that is participating with me in a setting

that I am calling “Listening Posts”. You will have the opportunity to stop by on Sunday afternoons and

help me to get to know you, and thus the congregation, a little better. It might even help me to

remember you name faster! During those times, you can ask me any question you like and I will try to

answer . Your homework will be to consider these questions: 1) What brought you to Trinity UMC, 2)

What keeps you here and, 3) If you had a magic wand and could change one thing about our church,

what would it be? There will be other questions, but that is your homework. You may sign up for these

30 minute slots on Sunday mornings, and I will be praying that these will be productive times for us.

I look forward to seeing you Sunday.

Your fellow servant in Christ,

Pastor Stuart

Thank you from the Brannocks

We are grateful for the love and support we received June 10 at

the reception in our honor. The gifts, cards, notes, and well

wishes were priceless. The framed picture of the eagle family is

over the mantle in my new office at the farmhouse.

We offer the past three years to the glory of God. As we go to

serve God in a new way, we pray for God to continue bringing

growth as you fulfill “a common purpose” by planting and

watering the seeds of the gospel. (I Corinthians 3:5-9)
