I know it won’t pay the bills, but it sure cannot hurt to tell every active duty or veteran that you appreciate their service and please remember the families of those who made the supreme sacrifice. 12th Annual Possum TossBy: Jeanie Hood-Carter Yes, you read it right! Possum Toss! I didn’t know what to expect but, this was a ‘by invitation only’ 3 day event. If you are lucky enough to know Clyde Minges who hosts the Annual Possum Toss, you might be lucky enough to get a verbal or internet invitation. Sounds tight, and the thought of people tossing possums in a crowd with bikes. Well, I am from the country, but I had no idea what to expect. I had this visual image of an old bore possum stinking and people chasing it around while it hissed with the threat of biting! Not my cup of tea, but I’m game to check out new things and Clyde is always a sweetie. The ride was pleasant through the back country road in the middle of farm land with some nice windy roads. Pull-ing in there were about 40 bikes parked, about 100 people there, including a lot of familiar faces from the local hang outs, and a DJ playing a good selection of music. We were immediately greeted by friendly people, some of whom we knew and some we didn’t, but all friendly. There were kids playing, 2 huge pits with 3 pigs bar-b-qued, drinks iced down in a water trough on a continuous basis by a very young lady, free beer, and a live possum in a cage for kissing if anyone was crazy enough to try it! As I walked around, people had stuffed toy possums and throwing them like horse shoes in a stiff game of “Possum Toss”! Whew….I was so glad they weren’t real. It isn’t often I back away from a challenge but, I was so afraid I would have to if they were tossing live pos-sums. Clyde and his business partner, Axel, have Broke N Axel Garage. They restore anything from T Models to late model and had a pretty nice antique mini fire truck they had not only restored but cranked up and were riding the kids in. The old fire truck and antique car were amazing and I’m not sure who was having more fun, the kids riding on the antique or Axel driving them. Everyone enjoyed watching them, including me. Nothing like watching a wide eyed kid, (big or small), on a cool ride for the first time. They also had 2 young women dressed like tattooed Ninja Turtles & painted green who were sword fighting and putting a real show on for the kids. It was really good to see kids playing hard the old fashioned way, getting really dirty, full of laughter, and biker families of all ages united for possum tossing, horse shoes, and a really fun laid back event. You know when you go to an event for the first time, and the women treat you like family, it is a good bunch of people! We even met a nice “Bullet” who publicly stated he not only loved his wife but had the best mother-in-law in the world. After a lengthy conversation with his mother-in-law, I might have to agree. She was an extremely gracious lady who has ridden for many years. Prior to our arrival there had been a shotgun wedding. Con-grats to the couple of 40+ years and making it official. Thank

you to Mike Moore for reminding us and Happy Birthday to Clyde and Axel. What a great way to share your day with so many biker friends and family! Oh, yea! Thank you for the possums being tossed not being real and the real one being in a cage and not on the pit! This was a cool event.


Brandy Gardner Relay For Life RideBy: Rose and Brandy In 2001 Brandy Gardner was diagnosed with ovarian and cervical cancer. At 23 she knew her life was about to change. She had surgery and chemo, and was diagnosed cancer free. She had spent five wonderful years cancer free, but in 2007 the cancer returned. Foe many years she would not talk about or even tell people she was a cancer survivor, and then she became very active with The American Cancer Society as a county advocacy representative, and a team captain. She had decided she wanted to spread the word as far and as fast as she could. 1 in every 4 women will beat breast or cervical cancer. We need desperately to spread the word about early detection. Brandy’s relay team “Gardner Cancer Grapplers” is lacking in members and donations this year. Brandy wanted to make a difference, but was stumped as to how to raise funds. Her husband, Tommy Gardner, had been her rock, with wonderful support through her ordeal. He put together a route and started planning. He asked Smokin’ Harley-Davidson and the Triad Jeep Club to get involved. The Triad Jeep Chapter was founded in 2010 of jeep owners that just like to get together and go four wheeling, but they also work hard to preserve the trails and areas they ride. They participate in many community affairs and chartable fundrais-ers, and also search and rescues. The ride left Smokin’ Har-ley-Davidson and went to Hanging Rock State Park. The event was catered by Hawg Wild Catering, owned and operated by Ronnie Mann of Wallburg, NC. He donated his time and staff to feed all the hungry bikers and jeep riders. Many thanks go out to Lt. Pete Shutt and Sgt. Jeremy Rowley of Forsyth County Sheriff’s Department for a safe and well-escorted ride. There were many donations for the raffle from vendors in the community; Piedmont Triad Insurance,

Utopia Day Spa in Clemmons, George’s Pizza, East Coast Wings, and Looney’s in High Point, Grace Flower Shop, CVS, the Wallburg Dinner, and Food Lion in Wallburg, Fantastic Tans in Thomasville, and of Course Smokin’ Harley-David-son. The big thanks go to Brandy and Tommy and the many that participated, every dime given to this cause is greatly appreci-ated, and will help in the dream that one day cancer will be an unknown word.

5th Annual Hometown Hero Day Attracts Large Crowd

By: Eddie J. Ferguson The Mt. Mitchell Marine Corps League Detachment 1266 is proud to announce that the Memorial Day Celebrations in Burns-ville, North Carolina, were a success. The 5th Annual Hometown Hero Day and 2nd Annual Ride For A Vet Motorcycle Rally were hosted on the Town Square, where there were high numbers in attendance. Friday Night, May 25th, local bands Red-line and The Kona Band played in Rockin’ The Village Green on the stage in the grass yard of the square. People brought their old cars to town and had them parked along the square for everyone to see. Many other people came out just to cruise, and be a part of “Cruisin’ The Way It Used To Be.” It is estimated that between the people in the grass field on the square, those who brought their classics to town, and those cruising, that there were more than 300 in attendance. Saturday, May 26th, the town of Burnsville hosted the Memorial Day Parade. After-wards, those who participated in Ride For A Vet went for a bike ride through the moun-tains of Western North Carolina. Juleigh Ed and Sugar Daddy performed on stage after the parade. This day meant more for a special couple from Beaufort, South Carolina. Jennifer and Richard Manly renewed their Wedding Vows. This service was conducted by Dr. Rocky Branch. Juleigh Ed sung a ballad for them afterwards. Jennifer Manly also won many items in the yearly raffle. She won a Pandora Bracelet, Sarah Hope earrings, assortment of restau-rant coupons and vouchers, and a pedicure/manicure/therapeutic massage. Also winning high ticket items in this year’s raffle are: Ricky Williams, from Mari-on, who won NASCAR tickets to the Bristol Night Race. Dempsy Sullins, from Spruce Pine, won a Buck Stove Grill. Mellanie Thomas from Bakersville, won a weekend in Pigeon Forge donated by Hidden Creek Construction. Janet Buchanan from Spruce Pine, won a weekend at the Wilderness at the Smokies. Katie Jones from Bakersville, won a weekend at Fontana Village. The Marine Corps League raised over

3rd Annual Blessing Of The Bikes 2012

By: Gerald Sloan The Seneca Bless-ing Of The Bikes was held on April 14th at the United Assembly of God Church located on Watson Drive in Seneca, SC. This event is in its third year and is hosted by several organizations. Those organizations include the Freedom Biker Church Green-ville, United Assembly Of God, Upstate’s Finest M/C, Warriors for Christ M/M, and Wheels Of Faith M/M. This year, the bike blessing was blessed musically by Michael Lemere from the United Assembly Of God’s Praise Team, New Hope Praise Team out of Clemson, SC, and the Christian Rock band Crosswired. Pastor Greg Ramsey, Pastor of the Freedom Biker Church Greenville, blessed those in attendance with the Word of God, and later in the event conducted the blessing over the one hundred and one people and the forty-one motorcycles in attendance. A love offering was asked of those in attendance in which a total amount of $313.63 was collected and donated to the United Way of Oconee County, SC. The event ended with a thirty-five mile ride through the scenic back roads of Oconee and Pickens counties ending at Smitty’s Grille on Hwy 93 in Central, SC.

Bike Night At Copper Head Tavern

By: Grant A new bar and grill called Copper Head Tavern located at 1504 Jake Alexander Boulevard in Salisbury has started a bike night every Thursday. Of course, there is something going on here each day of the week. See their ad in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine. The Salisbury HOG Chapter started a Thursday night dinner ride this year mainly going to local small eateries and sup-porting small business in and around Salisbury. I can say with out a doubt we really enjoyed the food and folks associated with this business. There were 15 or so of us and everyone got something different and every thing was great. 40¢ wings alone are a draw, but every thing was priced right, and the beer was very cold. A lot of to go boxes were used because of por-tion size. We really got our monies worth. Copper Head Tavern is not just a bar food joint, From Bison to Fish, you name it its there and cooked to perfection. 2012 Kickstart Motorcycle ClassicBy: Mark Infield I was reading American Iron Magazine and came across an announcement of a ride called Kickstart Classic. It was going to leave out of Wheels Through Time Motorcycle Museum in Maggie Valley on May 17th and end up at the Antique Motor-cycle Club Of America Southern National Swap Meet at Denton Farm Park. The only requirement was that all entries must be a kickstart motorcycle. My entry was a ’51 H-D Panhead that has spent the majority

of the days that I owned it in the shop. It wasn’t because it broke down a lot, but rather cosmetic changes like gas tanks and seat that kept me from riding it. Like everything else, finishing these changes were put off until the last minute leaving no time to do any shake down runs before the event so we loaded it on the trailer and headed for Maggie Valley. We arrived in time for a meet and greet dinner at WTT pro-vided by Holiday Diner. After eating, everyone looked over the variety of antique motorcycles in the parking lot. There were Triumphs, BMWs, Indians, Nortons, Harleys and more from all over the country. The celebrity entries included host Buzz Kanter from American Iron Magazine, Bert Baker of Baker Drive Trains, 6 time Top Fuel Knucklehead Drag Racing Cham-pion Pete Hill, “Kiwi” Mike Tomas, and Dale and Matt Walk-sler, the father son team curators of the Wheels Through Time Motorcycle Museum. The next morning around 10 am and after a short rider’s meet-ing, 70+ riders kicked their machines to life and headed out on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The destination this day was Boone, NC where we picked up a police escort and ultimately Cross-Roads H-D in N. Wilkesboro. There, Director Freddie Blevins and the local HOG Chapter welcomed and fed us. A pretty good group of spectators came out to see this rolling display of mo-torcycle history. Bert Baker introduced Pete Hill and gave away some t-shirts in a trivia contest. Batteries were charged, tires fixed and general repairs were made there and at the Holiday Inn Express parking lot. In the morning everyone was ready to go again and we all headed out for the AMCA Southern National Swap Meet at Denton Farm Park about 95 miles away. Some road construc-tion closed one of the roads and forced the bikes and 4 chase vehicles with trailers to turn around on a narrow two-lane road, but everyone made it and we were off again. It was a peaceful

and unevent-ful ride, but we did startle several herds of cows as we roared through the country-side. When we ar-rived at Den-ton Farm Park, we cruised in between two rows of vendors on the main road to a specially designated parking area. As the machines came to a stop and the riders dismounted, the curious spectators came over to see these machines and the men who rode them. It was smiles and sunshine all around. For many, like myself, there was a sense of accomplishment for just having made the run. It was the most fun that I have had on a motorcycle in quite some time! I have to thank Buzz Kanter, Dale & Matt Walksler, Bert Baker, Pete Hill, and Kiwi Mike for their efforts and participation. For the others that rode, I hope that you enjoyed it as much as I did and thank you for coming. Remember any day on a motorcycle is better than being at work and we got 2-3 great days out on the road riding old motorcycle with new friends. It was good for my soul!

Rolling Thunder XXVBy: Justin Lovingood Participating in Rolling Thunder has always been a child-hood dream of mine. This year, that “dream” came true. I was fortunate enough to get to ride to Washington, DC for Memo-rial Day Weekend with some great friends, and of course, my best friend, my wife. In years past, the Army has prevented me from being able to go due to prior engagements (deployments, training events, etc). On Thursday, May 24th, I hopped on my Harley and rode from Fayetteville, NC (where I’m stationed) to Salisbury (where I’m from). After goofing off all morning and part of the afternoon on Friday, my wife and I met up with a group of about 20 of our friends at Buckshot’s in Salisbury, where we departed at 5 pm for Dublin, Virginia. It was a nice, scenic ride. We got to Dublin and, after dinner at Fatz Café, got settled in for the night. Our wake up time was around 5:30 am, as we had decided that kickstands would be up at 6. The plan was to meet up with about 200 other bikers that would be participating in Rolling Thunder XXV at the Volvo plant in Dublin. After a short ceremony to remember CPL Stewart McNeil (MIA from the Korean War) and his family (as well as any and all other POW’s and MIA’s from all wars) and a safety brief, we stood our bikes up and the journey began. We had a police escort through town. The streets were lined with citizens of Dublin who waved flags and took pictures and cheered as we passed through. As we continued up the road, almost every overpass we went under had people on top waving flags and cheering. the group was also participating in a poker run, so we stopped several times along the way. The pre-planned lunch stop was in Charlottesville, where we had about an hour and twenty minutes to get gas and eat. We got back on the road afterwards and pulled into our hotel parking lot in Manassas around 5:30 pm, where the group had 100 rooms reserved. After settling in, there was a short meeting to discuss the weekend’s events and answer any questions that could be brought up. For those that felt up to riding into the nation’s capital that evening, there was a group that would leave around 7:30. It was about a 30 minute ride and was just start-ing to get dark as we parked near the Lincoln Memorial. Our first stop was the Vietnam Memorial, where there were hundreds of people (yes, even in the dark) visiting to pay their respects. For me, it had been many years since I’d been to Washington, DC, but The Wall was just as I remembered it; flags, flowers, and pictures scattered everywhere to remember those that had never returned from Vietnam alive. Although I

am young and wasn’t in the Vietnam War, I have family and friends that were. It was hard to fight back the emotions as I walked along The Wall, thinking about how our government had treated the thousands upon thousands of service members that fought in that war. Our “tour” continued to the Korean War Memorial, then to the Lincoln Memorial, where a couple of us decided to head back to the hotel to attempt to get a good night’s sleep.

Wake up Sunday morning was around 6, and kickstands were up at 7. The entire ride back into DC was interesting, as I wondered to myself what it would be like to actually participate in Rolling Thunder. It was already starting to get warm by the time we made it to the Pen-tagon, and would only get even hotter as the day went on. Many of us found shade under a bridge near the Pentagon as we waited for the ride to kick off at noon. Once it finally started, it still took about three hours for our parking lot to even begin to empty. As we filtered out of the parking lot, for as far as I could see in front of me and behind me were motorcycles of all types; sport bikes, Harleys, sport touring, even some cus-tom VW trikes and such. As we made the right onto Constitution Ave., I returned SSG Tim Chambers’ salute and started

to really see just how many people were lining the sides of the street in support of what we were there for. The ride continued and as we parked at the end, all I could think was, “Wow, look at all these bikes!” I knew that many of the bikers that par-ticipated didn’t stop but there were still seemingly countless motorcycles parked, as even more were pulling in. We walked over to Thunder Alley for a little while until a few of us decided to ride over to Arlington National Cemetery. While there, we watched the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldiers, Audie Murphy’s final resting place, and many other gravesites. As we left the cemetery and headed back to the hotel, my mind was racing with reflection on the day’s events and the things I’d seen and experienced. The ride home Monday was no different. We left at 7:30 am and from then until the time we got back to Salisbury around 1, all I could do was think about the thousands and thousands and thousands that chose the lifestyles they chose so that I could choose the lifestyle that I chose. Many have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Unfortunately, sometimes the government seems to forget this. The families of these service members will never forget the sacrifices of their loved ones; why should we? After participating in this year’s Rolling Thunder (the 25th anniversary), I will never miss another one. It was an experi-ence that I won’t forget, for as long as I live.

Crusin’ The Coast Bike Rally 2012By: dpapabear If you are at North Myrtle Beach area or on the south end in the Surf Side Beach/Murrells Inlet area during the 3rd week-end of May, you probably guessed that something to do with motorcycles was going on. They are lots of them everywhere! The bike weeks as we have know them in the past, before the City of Myrtle Beach tried flexing their muscles to run us out, are still happening and getting bigger each year. The second weekend starts things off, but not a lot going on that weekend, as the vendors aren’t issued permits to setup until the middle of the next week and the businesses really start putting forth efforts to draw our attention to them then. Plenty of rides, games, hanging out visiting with old friends and making plen-ty of new ones, socializing, partying, looking over all the bikes from all over the country, checking out the vendors, which had declined the first couple years after 2008, but are making a comeback, and just checking everyone out really gets going around Wednesday and Thursday of that week. The vendors and businesses stretch from the Beach House Harley-Davidson in Shallotte, thru the Swing Bridge Saloon in North Myrtle Beach area, on down to the Barefoot Land-ing Mall and Myrtle Beach Mall with vendors setting up, then down to the south end from the Myrtle Beach Harley-David-son area and on down to the Beaver Bar, Suck Bang Blow area in Murrells Inlet where things get pretty crowded Friday and Saturday. There are lots of things to do, great food to eat, plenty of sweet ladies showing off their assets, great looking

bikes, watching the takers in the games going on, and then plenty of good scenic rides up and down the coast. Several of the businesses have certain nights when they offer free food for the taking. The Swing Bridge Saloon is one place I never miss for the free bar-b-que every year done up by Dem Boys Bar-B-QueN. They are there cooking most of the week and Karaoke Bob provides lots of entertainment from the outside bar and then later bands rockin’ on the inside. This is only a short list around the major places but there are plenty of goings on all around the Grand Strand area and busi-nesses. So if you have not been lately, make plans to attend the Myrtle Beach Rallies for the coming year. There is also a Fall Rally going on the first weekend of October. There is not as much going on and it is less crowded with good riding weather

(little cooler usu-ally), but there is still plenty to do. One just cannot cover everything in one trip! So make your plans to visit the area and enjoy the party and all that they have to of-fer. 10th Annual Run To The SunBy: Judy Bortz Charities that benefit children have always been very impor-tant to biker communities everywhere, and St. Jude’s Chil-dren’s Hospital is chief among them. Danny Thomas opened the doors to St. Jude’s in 1962, and since then the hospital campus has more than doubled in size. It is one of the best pediatric cancer hospitals in the country. About 7800 active patients are seen at St Jude’s annually from around the world. No family is ever required to pay for treatment that isn’t cov-ered by their insurance, and no child is ever denied treatment because of a family’s inability to pay. This is why everything all Southern Cruiser Chapters do to raise money for the cause is so very important! On Saturday, June 2nd, Port City Chapter #162 Wilmington SCRC held their 10th Annual Run To The Sun hosted by Britt Motorsports. This run was a little different than most I have attended. This was a dice run, and I was very excited when on my first roll I scored a 1-5 straight, until I found out the game is scored by adding all the dice together! High roll was 134 and won $200. Low dice was 69 that won $100 and donated it all back to the cause! We had a perfect day for a ride. The morning was overcast and cool so we weren’t sweltering before the first stop. SCRC members led groups of 10-12 bikes on a scenic 27-mile ride. Although it was short in miles it took about an hour to run, and showed me parts of the greater Wilmington area I hadn’t ventured to before! By the time all groups had returned to Britt Motorsports for the rest of the day’s festivities the sun was shining and chrome twinkled all around. Chrome is definitely my favorite color! There was a corn hole contest, loud pipe contest (very cool), bike show, 50/50, and auctions for great prizes donated by local businesses. Music was donated by DJ Dane who rocked the lot all day long! Lunch was chargrilled on the spot, hot-dogs and hamburgers complimented by an assortment of sides and lots of scrumptious desserts! No one left hungry, that is a fact! There were many who came for the festivities that didn’t ride, and all the kids seemed to have a lot of fun! There were about 53 registered participants on the ride itself and an in-credible $10,119 was raised for St Jude’s. That just blows my mind! It is amazing the heart bikers have. The money raised helps so many families that will never know that the generous souls who gave so much time, sweat, and money to the help relieve the suffering and pain of their children of were bikers. Everyone holds their own family close to heart, but bikers…we hold ALL families close to heart, and will do what needs to be done to help. Southern Cruisers would like to thank all that came out, whether you rode, or just came by to eat, because you are the people that make helping these sick children possible. Without the great love of the Wilmington community SCRC would not have seen these kinds of contributions! Bikers don’t just see with their eyes, but also with their hearts, and that, my friends,

Poker Run For Valorie Allgood

By: Rose and Lloyd The last week In May Valorie Allgood was shot in the head by her estranged husband, Bryan Allgood, who was already facing charges of assault on a female in connection with Valo-rie. At the time of the shooting there was a domestic violence order prohibiting him from contacting her. This did not stop him from coming to her home. She asked him to leave, but he pulled a .22 caliber and shot at her face. Luckily, the bullet did not discharge. As Valorie ran from the house, he shot her in the back of her head. The bullet hit just behind her ear and fractured her skull, but didn’t penetrate it. One in every 4 women will experience some form of domes-tic violence in her lifetime, whether it be intimidation, physi-cal assault and battery, or sexual assault. Almost one third of female homicide victims are a result of domestic violence. In a manner of speaking, Valorie was one of the lucky ones. On Saturday, June 9th, a poker run and BBQ benefit was held in her honor, to help with medical expenses. She was able to be there with her family and friends. Her brother Chuck Boyer cooked and sold BBQ plates and sandwiches all day at the Bi-zzy Bee at the corner of N. Main Street and Skeet Club Road in High Point, NC. Tim Parnell contacted the United Riders Riding Club and they, along with other bikers participated in a poker run. There was a raffle, a 50/50 drawing, cash for best and worse hand, and all who won gave the money back to the benefit. There was a silent auction with great items from many vendors in the area. All the riders and participants were happy to help out this cause and to be able to talk with and spend time with Valorie and her family. It was a great ride with great scenery and a great cause. There are so many things in this world that we have no con-trol over, but domestic violence is something that should be controlled. Women need to speak out and get help if they ever find them self in these situations.


5th Annual Travis Benfield Memorial Scholarship Ride

By: Pat Kelly Heavy rain on Friday cleared to bring bright sunny skies early Saturday morning 6/2/12 just in time for the crew to be-gin preparations for the 5th Annual Travis Benfield Memorial Scholarship Ride. This memorial scholarship ride is held in the memory of Travis Benfield who lost his life at the early age of 16. Proceeds from this and the previous rides go to a scholar-ship fund set up to be presented to a graduating senior at East Davidson High School in Travis name. 50 motorcycles headed out from Wheatmore High School in Trinity on a relaxing 3-hour country ride through Randolph County lead by the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department. Randolph County has some of the nicest roads in the area from Caraway Mountain to the Uwharrie National Forest. All the riders had a great time as the sun shined brightly all day. While the riders were out enjoying the scenery, antique cars and mus-cle cars were assembling for the Shine and Show Car Event. Over 15 cars gathered to show a little chrome and horsepower. The Timeless Band was playing a variety of music when the ride returned, while Big John’s Catering and Dominos Pizza provided the food for the after party. Over a hundred addition-al friends and family joined the after ride festivities. A Special Thank you goes out to the Randolph County Sher-iff’s Deputies for the job they did leading the ride and making

sure that everyone got home safe and sound. The Shine and Show awarded a plaque to Mr. Randy Newton and his 1929 Model A. Travis’s brother, Brandon, chose it as the Show Favorite because he thought that this car was kind of like his brother - “different”. Mr. & Mrs. Benfield would like to thank each and every one of you who participated in this event, as we were able to raise an estimated $1,300 for the scholarship fund. We are looking forward to next year’s event.


2012 Hunters Helping Kids Spring Benefit Ride

By: Angie Neal What do you have when you bring bikers and hunters together? The answer is; big hearts, a great benefit ride, and lots of people with the same purpose of raising money for Hunters Helping Kids, Inc! This benefit is designed to raise money to fulfill a child’s dream of going on a once in a lifetime hunt. April 21st turned out to be a pleasant day for riding our bikes for this great cause. Starting at the Old Ski Lodge in Ossipee, NC where registration began and door prize tickets were sold, the fun filled day started to come together. The ride left around noon, headed to Cat’s, then to It’ll Do, Lucky’s, and then back to the Old Ski Lodge. Arriving back, there was plenty of food prepared by Dot and Tommy Brown, Martha and Ran-dall Brady, and other volunteers to feed all the hungry riders. Everyone then gathered outside for the door prizes to be given away, the 50/50 drawing, and the silent auction. Hunters Helping Kids was originally organized in 2005 to take kids, which may not otherwise have the opportunity, to participate in a dream hunt. It has evolved over the years and there are several chapters throughout the United States. A minimum of 10 kids are chosen to participate in the Ultimate Kids Hunt. Each child chosen receives a rifle with a scope, a full set of camouflage clothes, boots, a bag of hunting accessories, paid hunting license, food and lodging for themselves and an accompanying family member. Details can be found on HuntersHelpingKids.com. It costs around $1,500 per child, which is close to what the benefit ride raised. However, the goal for this ride was to raise money for what I call a “puffer machine”. (I am not sure if this is the technical term!) This machine enables a handicapped person with no arms or hand use, to enjoy a hunt. The machine moves the gun up or down, side to side, and shoots, all by using your mouth. How cool is that? For all their hard work and dedication in making this event possible, Dot and Tommy

Omar Shriners Host Bike Rally

By: Truman Newton As the day broke at Santee Outlet Mall on June 2nd, event coordinator Lynn Stack and his staff were hard at work prepar-ing for the finale of the 2012 Omar Shriners Bike Rally. The workers were busy preparing the stage for the performances of Eddie Bush and The Jeffery Allen Edwards Band who would perform to everyone’s enjoyment that evening. Bikers assembled at various points throughout the Low-country to make the memorable ride to Santee Outlet Mall in support of Omar Shriners and Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Each hoped for a winning hand. As noon approached the first bikers began to arrive at Santee and the event was in full swing. The best BBQ around along with hamburgers and hotdogs was being served at the food tents. Local DJ, Dr. DC provided music while everyone anx-iously awaited the arrival of the bands and as the time moved on all makes and models of bikes and riders arrived and the air was filled with excitement and anticipation. Everyone was having a great time as they renewed old ac-quaintances and visited with friends. Many made new friends as groups arrived from Barnwell, Orangeburg, Summerville/Charleston, Florence, and Myrtle Beach. The cool breeze, wonderful food and entertaining events made for a great day. To cap off the day, the Hooters Girls arrived to help with the event and were definitely a hit with all present. As the bands cranked up, the evening filled with fun and fellowship. Eddie Bush brought excitement to the stage as he performed and the Jeffery Allen Edwards Band closed out the evening with a great performance. It was the finale to a great bike rally and those present vowed not to miss next year’s great event.


Vets In Need Poker Run

By: Caroline It has been about a couple of years since the American Legion Riders held this ride. It is a very important part of the events that the ALR at Post 55 hold in order to raise funds for veterans as well as active duty service persons. We met on June 9th at Post 55 in Winston-Salem and rode to VFW Post 3006 in Salisbury. Those folks are always very welcoming and supportive of our ALR. Our group made our last stop at the VFW Post on Main Street in Winston-Salem. Just when I thought that my hand I had drawn on the ride was not going to be a winner, I found out I was holding the worst hand! Also, congrats to Mike for winning the best hand with 3 Kings. The ALR will be having more events this year and invite all to come out and participate. They also have bike nights on Tuesday nights throughout the summer. The purpose of all of their events is solely to raise money for other veterans. I guarantee that you will not find a friendlier group to ride with or just hang out with. Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association Benefit Ride

By: Phyllis Briles On June 2nd over 300 bikes rolled out to sup-port Chapter 15-5 of the Combat Veteran’s Mo-torcycle Association. This is CVMA’s biggest fund-raiser in the state to help veterans and veteran’s causes. Over the last 4 years this ben-efit ride has raised over $80,000, all of which has been donated to such groups as Fisher House, Purple Heart Homes, Patriot Rovers, Project Healing Waters and many others. The CVMA Benefit Ride is one big party from beginning to end. A Mooresville based, Metro Jethro, provided entertainment as bik-ers gathered to begin the ride at Cross Roads Harley-Davidson. A local Blue Star Mother Chapter assisted by registering participants. Bikers came from near and far to support this event. There were riders from all over NC, TN, SC, VA, and as far away as New York City, to name a few. The 68-mile police escorted ride left CrossRoads at exactly 1 pm led by the Iredell County Sheriff’s Department. Every-one enjoyed the one hour and 20 minute scenic ride down NC Highway 115 to Easy Eddie’s in Huntersville where the party continued. The band PUSHH played Southern Rock for the crowd’s enjoyment. Perhaps the most fun part of the day was the auction of donated items. Where else can you get 2 round trip Delta Airline tickets or a custom made knife at such a bargain? The auction items included such things as trips to local spas, hotel getaways, autographed artwork, and NASCAR memorabilia. Inside there was a raffle of more donated items. Another Blue Star Mother Chapter helped with the raffle. This is the second time the event has gone from CrossRoads in Wilkesboro to Easy Eddie’s in Huntersville. Plans are already in the making for next year’s ride. If you missed this one go ahead and mark your calendar next year for the first weekend in June. The Combat Veteran’s Motorcycle Association is a group of men and women from all branches of the United States Armed Forces who ride motorcycles as a hobby. Their mission is to support and defend those who have defended our country and our freedoms. Membership is comprised of Full Members (those with verified combat service) and Supporter Members (those who have non-combat military service), who have a sin-cere dedication to helping veterans. There are members from nearly all 50 states and living abroad. North Carolina currently has 5 chapters. Their main focus is to help care for veterans, provide a warm meal, clothing, shelter, and guidance, or simply to say “Thank You.” and “Welcome Home.” Through events like this one they are able to carry on this mission.

The Race Of The Year

In Rockingham, NC and at the home track of the Ray Price Race Team, the Akea Express, piloted by Tommy Grimes, qualified in the number 1 position and found its way to the finals during the Carolina Spring Nitro Nationals May 5 and 6. Saturday was a hot day at the track but that didn’t stop Grimes from pulling a solid number right out of the gate, 6.393 ET at 218.02 mph, and jumping into the number 1 quali-fying spot. On Sunday, during round 1 eliminations, the 1,000 horse-power Top Fuel Nitro Harley drag bike was paired with R. House and advanced to the semi-finals running a 6.384 ET at 218.94 mph. In the semi-finals, both riders, Grimes and Pelrine, were quick off the light (.045 vs. .048) but the Akea Express pulled ahead and there was no catching him. Grimes heads to the finals after his 6.325 ET at 221.42 mph. “I was pleased with the performance of Grimes on the Akea Express”, said Ray Price. “The team worked hard to get the right tune in the bike and we ran consistent all weekend”. Advancing to the finals, Grimes meets up with D. Horne once again. This was a battle to the finish and although both bikes ran 6.306 ET, each at 219 mph, Grimes finished runner-up. Final numbers are as follows: Grimes with .028 light, 6.306 ET at 219.47 mph vs. Horne’s .016 light, 6.306 ET at 219.69 mph. “This was probably the race of the year!” said Ray Price, “Running an identical ET and mph is nearly unheard of.” The Ray Price Motorsports team sends sincere thanks to all their sponsors for their support. Summer Bash 2012By: Mark Infield For years The Summer Bash was the biggest party in 6 counties. It started out as a birthday party and took off from there. But you know that things constantly change and so did the Bash. One year it was cancelled after new owners took over the bar it was held at and now the bar doesn’t even exist. Mark Wheelihan at Harley-Davidson of Greensboro wanted to revive the traditional old school biker summer bash and we all know that if you want it done right, you have to do it yourself. And that is exactly what he did. The Motorcycle Park next door to the dealership is a great place to have events and with Chunk’s Hawg Haven on the property, it is a no brainer. The day was as good as it gets with temperatures in the low 80s, a nice breeze and no chance of rain. Buffalo Road started off the entertainment and the people began to roll in. The HOG Chapter was providing the hamburgers and hot dogs and Havana Phil’s Cigar Company offered a variety of stogies for sale. It was a great day for a ci-gar and a cold beer! The aroma of good cigars and hamburgers drifted across the park. Bob Karney, Carolinas’ Biker Lawyer was set up giving out calendars and stuff to everyone that stopped by. Rolling Thunder NC 6 selling $10 raffle tickets for an AR15. You can bet I bought one of them. Now if I can just pass the background check, I am good to go. The bar was jammed with happy bikers and since they did not advertise this event on the radio there were fewer strollers and non-riding twenty somethings in attendance. H-D of Greensboro had their Riders Edge Buell on display and they were eager to talk to anyone interested in taking the class. There was a shoeshine man on the scene, too and now our boots look better than they ever did! Not Dead Yet took the stage and entertained the crowd for a while and, quite frankly, since the weather was so nice and I had a cold one in my hand, visiting with everyone made the time pass quickly. Too Far Gone was the next band and somewhere in there they had a hot chaps contest planned, but,

evidently, no one wore any chaps to the event (why would they on a day like this?) because even a $250 gift card didn’t flush even one bunny out of the bushes. So they scrapped that plan and opted for a wet t-shirt contest later in the evening. Suckerpunch was the final band of the day and by now the crowd had really poured in. During a break the wet t-shirt contest generated $150 from 3 guys who paid $50 each to pour water on the contestants. This money was donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Piedmont. The lucky winner received a $250 gift card to H-D of Greensboro for her misery. It was a great day and I thank everyone who worked to make this event what it was – a traditional old school biker summer bash. I hope they do it again next year. You can bet I will be there. The Public Burden Argument Is An Empty OneBy: Matt Danielson - Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group I have come across an interesting study. I think it helps our argument that allowing riders to choose whether or not to wear a helmet will not create a financial burden for all. We addressed this issue with regard to insurance rates last month and saw how insurance rates are not affected by motorcycle helmet laws. However, that focused on insurance rates alone while this study focuses on the total cost of deaths related to mo-tor vehicle crashes. The Centers For Disease Control (CDC) did a state based analysis of the cost of death from motor vehicle crashes using data from each state in 2005. It looked at the total cost faced by each state for medical expenses and lost work due to fatalities from motor vehicle crashes. You can view the results of that study at: http://goo.gl/Yna8s. I took the results of the study and rearranged the states in order of highest costs due to death from crashes to lowest costs due to death from motor vehicle crashes. I then identified each state that had a mandatory helmet law in effect at that time. The results are listed below. States with a mandatory helmet law in effect at the time are identified with an H. In 2005 twenty states had a mandatory helmet law in effect. Thirty states either had no law or gave adults the right to choose. The only change in that list today is that Michigan is now a choice state leaving only nineteen states with mandatory helmet laws. Of the top ten most expensive states, five had mandatory helmet laws while five were choice states. Of the ten least expensive states only one had a mandatory helmet law. Now obviously there are other factors such as population to consider, but at the same time we also have to consider the amount of motorcyclists who do their riding in choice states who actually live in a neighboring mandatory helmet state. Next I looked at the top twenty-five most expensive states vs. the twenty-five least expensive states. Of the top twenty-five most expensive states fourteen had mandatory helmet laws. Only six states in the twenty-five least expensive states had mandatory helmet laws. Taking it even further, I looked at the total cost from mandatory states and from choice states. The total cost of death from motor vehicle crashes in the twenty states that had a mandatory helmet law in place in 2005 was 18.76 billion dollars. The total cost of death from motor vehicle crashes in the thirty states that either had no law or gave riders choice in 2005 was 21.16 billion dollars. That means that in 2005 the man-datory helmet states represented 40% of the states and 47% of the cost of death from motor vehicle crashes while the thirty choice states represented 60 % of the states but only 53% of the cost of death from motor vehicle crashes. Let me reiterate that I recognize that there are factors involved in these numbers that are not addressed in my argument. That being said, if non-helmeted motorcycle riders are a public burden due to costs from fatalities wouldn’t you expect the numbers to be much higher in the states that allow adults to make their own choice? I certainly would. If you look at the number of motorcyclists killed and injured in motor vehicle crashes each year, it makes sense that we don’t have a large economic impact due to crashes. According to the US Census Bureau (http://goo.gl/aDmI7) there were 2,035,474 injuries and deaths resulting from motor vehicle crashes 2010. 94,462 of those were related to motorcycle crashes. That means that in 2010, only 4.7% of the motor vehicle crash related deaths and injuries involved motorcycles. Statistically, we are not a large segment of the population that contributes to the overall cost of motor vehicle related deaths and injuries. So what does all of this tell us? It tells us that the public burden argument is an empty one. My choice whether to wear a helmet affects me, not you. Likewise, your choice whether to wear a helmet affects you, not me. Therefore, it makes sense that we should make the choice for ourselves. There is simply no justification for the government mak-ing that choice for us. AMCA Southeast Nationals At Denton Farm ParkStory and photo by Alan Dockery For many folks May means a ride to the beach. But for the past three years some of us have been looking forward to a weekend at North Carolina’s Denton FarmPark. That’s where we gathered for the Antique Motorcycle Club of America’s 3rd Annual Southern National Meet. This meet has quickly grown into a favorite with AMCA members and the riding public. Most other AMCA clubs have their meets at fairgrounds with very little shade. Denton FarmPark is an awesome site with acres of shaded campgrounds. Some vendors were set up in the open field, but you could also check out many in the shade. The AMCA offers much more than just walking around looking at old motorcycles and parts. I hustled to Denton Friday morning so I could catch the arrival of the Kickstart Classic. Buzz Kanter, American Iron Magazine Boss, selected the Southern National meet as the place to end his annual ride for kickstart motorcycles. They rode for a couple days from Wheels Through Time Museum across the North Carolina mountains and down to Denton. Ask Carolinas’ Full Throttle Boss, Mark Infield, about that ride. He sure had a big smile on his face as he rode in on his Old Panhead Chopper. Once the Kickstart Classic group was parked we swarmed them to check out the bikes and hear their stories. I love them all from Pete Hill’s badass Knucklehead to the 1970’s Honda 450. It took much of the rest of the afternoon to check out the vendors set up from one end of the park to the other. This year’s theme was Flatheads, with many displayed in one of the FarmPark’s old buildings. The AMCA Southern National meet is one of the best deals in motorcycle events too. Admis-sion for non-members is only $10 for both Friday and Satur-day. “This was a real good year for us at Denton,” said Bob Aton, Meet Chairman. “The weather was great and lots of people came out to see the bikes and vendors. When do you get to see that much for ten bucks, for the weekend?” “One thing I’m very proud of is the comments I get from attendees and vendors. Lots of folks told me they appreci-ated the Southern hospitality they received in North Carolina. Thanks to the Denton FarmPark folks too. They have been very cooperative for the past three years.” I hope the folks from up North enjoyed the Lexington-style BBQ, fried bologna sandwiches and fried fruit pies too. Saturday is the busiest day with hundreds of motorcycles filling the parking area. Besides the vendors and display bikes there was lots to see and do. Saturday morning started with the historic women’s club, Motor Maids entering the park and cruising around the grounds. My favorite activity was the nar-rated Parade of Antique Motorcycles, which has become the signature event of the Southern National meet. Before the parade, folks start lining up the machines they will ride. It’s kinda like a cool old bike show as we walk

along checking them out. Then one at a time they pull up to a spot where the crowd is treated to a description of the ma-chines. The narrator this year was Dale Walksler, founder and curator of the Wheels Through Time Museum. What a treat to sit there and watch old motorcycles ride by as Dale tells us about them. He shared his knowledge of these cool machines, often more than what the owners had on the info card. I sure hope Dale comes back next year to narrate the parade. Next the crowd moved to the field games area. You think it’s tough competing on your modern motorcycle, you should have seen the guys doing it on old bikes with foot clutches and hand shifts. I didn’t get the results of who won which events but when it came down to who was the Master of the Field that day it was a tie between Dale and his son Matt. In a face-to-face slow race Matt won and took home the honors. After the games, bikes pulled in for the Concourse D’Ordinaire, a bike show for the common bike. Any bike could enter as long as it was old and ran. This is a cool little show with awards for things like Least Chrome, Most Rustic, Least Paint and Most Cobbled. The AMCA Southern National meet has become the Caroli-nas’ event you really should attend if you are into the his-tory of motorcycles. Bikers can check out historic machines and spend hours talking to many of the guys who saved and restored them. You will see some of the oldest motorcycles running and rideable. You can buy bikes and parts to start your own project. Motorcycles 35 years old are considered antiques, so that now includes the imports many of us grew up riding. Yes, there are lots of Harleys, Indians, Triumphs, Nortons and the bikes we are used to seeing at antique meets. But the Japanese bikes and parts vendors are increasing too. Many of us have fond memories of those machines. The AMCA Southern Na-tional meet is not a snobby gathering of guys with high-dollar antiques. It is for you and that clean old machine you found in a shed or the ratty project bike you’d rather ride than restore. Come join us next year at Denton. Freeborne’s Eatery & Lodge Memorial Day Festivities

By: dpapabear On Sunday, May 27th, I decided to take a ride to the beautiful North Carolina mountains to one of my favorite areas along the Blue Ridge Parkway; that being Freeborne’s Eatery And Lodge just off the parkway near milepost 248 in the Laurel Springs area. Freeborne’s has everything needed for a great weekend outing; lodging, good food, full bar, bands or DJ, hospitality, and plenty of friendly patrons. It’s a great place to work out of for some beautiful riding, whether along the parkway or up thru some of the back roads and villages. I knew this being Memorial Day Weekend they would have something special going on, but then again they usually have something going on for the weekends all summer long! Upon

my arrival parking was already getting hard to find. They had a band playing out back on the grass and couple vendors set up as well as about a dozen picnic tables and umbrellas set out. The band turned out to be the Thrillbilly Country Band from Kernersville and they were doing an awesome job. They were rockin out a variety of music from different artists and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Inside the eatery it was hard to find a seat almost continuously as we all seemed to enjoy the food as well. The bikes just kept coming and going all day. We ate and mingled around taking pics and saying hi to every-one for several hours. Then I got the idea to visit another one of my stops along the parkway, that being Raps along milepost 193.5. They had a Memorial Day Blow Out as well. They also had bands playing, The Mulligans & Sonic 45, were rockin’ out some tunes all afternoon, and they had a pig roast with serving starting somewhere around mid-day as well. So any time you are up riding along that area of the Blue Ridge Parkway, stop by these great places and visit for a spell. Be sure to tell them you saw their ads in The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine and appreciate their biker loyality. In Memory Of Ron Lau

By: Jeanie Hood-Carter On May 12th a dear friend and true supporter of the biker community, Ron Lau, lost his battle with cancer. Ron was known around Fayetteville, NC and the biker community for always helping with benefits, rides, and support groups. He was family at Legend’s Pub and Big Harrys, and was a National Officer in the Bikers For Bikers Foundation. He truly believed in the US military after doing 3 tours in Vietnam while serving in the army and was proud to say his daughter was military as well. Survived by Carie, his wife, whom he called “the love of his life”, and a daughter who was “his pride and joy”. When Ron spoke of Carie, and he did often, it was as though they were still newly wed even after almost 37 years of marriage. His eyes would dance as he spoke her name and told the story of how she ignored him when he wanted to court her as a young soldier. As he passionately told his stories he would fill your heart with his love and had the ability to make a stranger feel like family. Ron cooked for all the volunteers at the first Bikers For Bikers Foundation Spring Rally in 2011. He had coffee at 5am for the early risers, called his wife and told her to quit her job so she could hear the bands with him, and kept food going the entire weekend for the crew. There have been few benefits at Legend’s Pub or Big Harrys that Ron didn’t help with. He was a devoted family man, great cook, TRUE friend, loyal sup-porter of bikers and the US military, and above all, a beautiful person filled with love for all. RIP Ron you will be missed by all. You may be gone but you will always be remembered.


Biker Wedding In Mt. Pleasant, NCBy: Joy Burleson Joy Teeter and Tony Burleson were married in a biker wedding on Saturday, June 2nd. The wed-ding was held at the home of Neal and Mary Fudge in Mt. Pleasant, NC. Biker Preacher, Chris Wil-liams of Woodleaf Baptist Church in Woodleaf, NC officiated the ceremony. He rode in on his bike ahead of the groom. The Groom rode in on a chrome bike and the bride was ridden in on a chrome 3 wheeler escorted by Steve Stirewalt, who built both bikes. Steve is the owner of Dirt and Street Cycle shop in Rockwell, NC. The groom, Tony Burleson, helped to build the 3 wheeler. The groom rode in with “Born To Be Wild” playing. The bride and bridesmaids walked down the aisle to Johan Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major. The bride and groom have 3 daugh-ters each and they were all bridesmaids. Tony’s 3-year-old granddaughter was the flower girl.

Various biker friends lined their bikes in the yard as a path for the wedding party to go through. The reception was a sit down meal, with meat cooked all day on the grill by the groom’s cousin, Wahoo Vanhoy and the rest of the meal was prepared by the hostess, Mary Fudge. Sherry Hutchens made the wedding cake and groom’s cake. The groom’s cake was made into the shape of the Harley-Davidson

Bar and Shield. It was done in black and pink with the bride and grooms name and wedding date in the shield. Mary Fudge also coordinated the wedding and provided all decorations. The wedding colors were hot pink and black. The toasting glasses were hand crafted by a local winery with the Harley-Davidson Bar and Shield which had the bride and groom’s name and date of the wedding painted in the shield. The guest book and cake knife

had motorcycle ribbon with motorcycle charms hanging from them. The bride wore a creamy white, off one shoulder short dress with hot pink shoes, while the groom wore jeans and a black and pink Harley-Davidson shirt. The bride’s garter also had a motorcycle charm hanging from it. Many thanks to the Fudges’ for hosting this awesome biker wedding for us!

When you woke up this morning what was the very first thing you thought of? Your busy day ahead, your workday, your problems and worries, your riding plans, your life! Did you think about the gift that today is and were you thankful for it? I know, all this is “deep” or “silly stuff” but you woke up in a free country that fought for its independence and you have the right to make your plans for today, to start your day the way you choose. Are you thankful for it? Not only do we take our day and our life for granted, as if it’s somehow owed to us, but we also take our independence for granted! So much so that I’m afraid we are giving it away day by day! What our founding fathers fought and died for we are selling off one business at a time. Many parts for Har-ley’s are not even made in America any longer! Then we turn around and go in debt to the very ones that hate us and want to control us! I don’t believe what we have today is how George Washington envisioned it being. But, at the same time, we are an independent Nation and we need to continue to celebrate that independence; to be thank-ful for the right to make our own plans for today instead of a dictator doing it for us! Also, even though we have problems and worries to think about, we should first be thankful for the gift of another day! July the 4th, America’s Independence Day; were you thank-ful? July 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th were gift from God days; were you thankful? When you wake up in the morning in a free country

it will be because of the gift of independence given to you by others and when you wake up in the morning in a new day it will be because of the gift of God given you by His Grace! So, before your day gets to be wide open, take the time say thank you to the Lord for our nation’s Independence and the gift of another day; then enjoy the freedom to ride In His Wind. Every day is a gift, unwrap it slowly and enjoy it. They are not promised but given! And if you haven’t already, pray the Biker’s Prayer on this page, mean it in your heart and begin to enjoy the greatest gift of all, Eternal Life through Jesus Christ! Project 581 was the opening act for these beauties. They got the crowds in the party mood to welcome out “Mustang Sally”. (www.MustangSallyBand.com) Let me tell you, those girls are gooood! They rocked the stage! They were cutting up with all of us as well as picking on security! It was funnnnnny. But aside from that, they really rocked the stage with a lot of their own songs as well as some other favorites from other artists. Wow! These ladies were great. If you ever get the chance to see these ladies do it! You’ll really enjoy yourself. They also appeared at Thunder In The Smokies the weekend before and will be appearing at the Carolina Mountain Ribfest in Fletcher, NC on July 13, the Easyriders Rodeo in Wilson on July 14, Fowlerville, MI on August 18, and Chillicothe, OH on Aug 31. It was a wonderful time with wonderful people, great kick ass rock-n-roll, and wonderful, talented, beautiful ladies of “Mustang Sally”. Then he told me not to do it again. The next day in class my teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was. I told her it was chicken. She asked me why, so I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken. She sent me back to the principal’s office. He laughed, and told me not to do it again. I don’t understand. My parents taught me to be honest, but my teacher doesn’t like it when I am. Today, my teacher asked me to tell her what famous person I admired most. I told her, “Colonel Sanders.” Guess where I am now...

Two women were sitting next to each other at a bar. After a while, one looks at the other and says, “I can’t help but think, from listening to you, that you’re from Ireland.” The other woman responds proudly, “Yes, I sure am!” The first one says, “So am I! And where about in Ireland are ya from?” The other woman answers, “I’m from Dublin, I am.” The first one responds, “So, am I!! And what street did you live on in Dublin?” The other woman says, “A lovely little area. It was in the west end. I lived on Warbury Street in the old central part of town.” The first one says, “Faith, and it’s a small world. So did I! So did I! And what school did ya go to?” The other woman answers, “Well now, I went to Holy Heart of Mary, of course.” The first one gets really excited and says, “And so did I! Tell me, what year did you graduate?” The other woman answers, “Well, now, let’s see. I graduated in 1964.” The first woman exclaims, “The Good Lord must be smiling down upon us! I can hardly believe our good luck at winding up in the same pub tonight! Can you believe it? I graduated from Holy Heart of Mary in 1964 me self!” About this time, Michael walks into the bar, sits down, and orders a beer. Brian, the bartender, walks over to Michael shaking his head and mutters, “It’s going to be a long night tonight.” Michael asks, “Why do you say that, Brian?” Brian answers, “The Murphy twins are drunk again.”

A doctor and a lawyer were talking at a party. People describing their ailments and asking the doctor for free medical advice constantly interrupted their conversation. After an hour of this, the exasperated doctor asked the lawyer, “What do you do to stop people from asking you for legal advice when you’re out of the office?” “I give it to them,” replied the lawyer, “and then I send them a bill.” The doctor was shocked, but agreed to give it a try. The next day, still feeling slightly guilty, the doctor prepared the bills. When he went to place them in his mailbox, he found a bill from the lawyer.

A wife decides to take her husband to a strip club for his birthday. They arrive at the club and the doorman says, “Hey, Dave! How ya doin’?” His wife is puzzled and asks if he’s been to this club before. “Oh, no,” says Dave. “He’s on my bowling team.” When they are seated, a waitress asks Dave if he’d like his usual and brings over a Budweiser. His wife is becoming increasingly uncomfortable and says, “How did she know that you drink Budweiser?” “She’s in the Ladies’ Bowling League, honey. We share lanes with them.” A stripper then comes over to their table, throws her arms around Dave, and says “Hi Davey. Want your usual table dance, big boy?” Dave’s wife, now furious, grabs her purse and storms out of the club. Dave fol-lows and spots her getting into a cab. Before she can slam the door, he jumps in beside her. He tries desperately to explain how the stripper must have mistaken him for someone else, but his wife is having none of it. She is screaming at him at the top of her lungs, call-ing him every name in the book. The cabby turns his head and says, “Looks like you picked up a real bitch tonight, Dave.”

A man was sent to Hell for his sins. As he was being taken to his place of eternal tor-ment, he passed a room where a lawyer was having an intimate encounter with a beauti-ful young woman. “What a ripoff,” the man muttered. “I have to roast for all eternity, and that lawyer gets to spend it with a beautiful woman.” Jabbing the man with his pitchfork, the escorting demon snarled, “Who are you to question that woman’s punishment?”

Joe grew up in a small town, then moved away to attend college and law school. He decided to come back to the small town because he could be a big man in this small town. He really wanted to impress everyone.

He opened his new law office, but business was very slow at first. One day, he saw a man coming up the sidewalk. He decided to make a big impression on this new client when he arrived. As the man came to the door, Joe picked up the phone. He motioned the man in, all the while talking. “No. Ab-solutely not. You tell those clowns in New York that I won’t settle this case for less than one million.” “Yes. The Appeals Court has agreed to hear that case next week. I’ll be handling the primary argument and the other members of my team will provide support.” “Okay. Tell the DA that I’ll meet with him next week to discuss the details.” This sort of thing went on for almost 5 minutes. All the while the man sat patiently as Joe rattled instructions. Finally, Joe put down the phone and turned to the man. “I’m sorry for the de-lay, but as you can see, I’m very busy. What can I do for you?” The man replied, “I’m from the phone company. I came to hook up your phone.”

Two zebras are talking and one asks the other, “Am I black with white stripes or white with black stripes?” The other replies, “Well I don’t know. You should pray to God about that and ask him.” So that night he did and God replied, “You are what you are.” The next day he said to the other zebra, “I still don’t understand what I am because God just said, you are what you are.” The second zebra responds, “You must be white with black stripes or else God would have said, ‘You is what you is’.”

An airline captain was breaking in a very pretty new blonde stewardess. The route they were flying had a stay-over in another city, so upon their arrival, the captain showed the stewardess the best place for airline person-nel to eat, shop, and stay overnight. The next morning as the pilot was preparing the crew for the day’s route, he noticed the new stewardess was missing. He knew which room she was in at the hotel and called her up wondering what happened to her. She answered the phone, sobbing, and said she couldn’t get out of her room. “You can’t get out of your room?” the captain asked, “Why not?” The stewardess replied, “There are only three doors in here, “she cried,” one is the bathroom, one is the closet, and one has a sign on it that says “Do Not Disturb”!!


Bikers For Bikers Foundation Annual Spring RallyBy: Jeanie Hood-Carter Each year, I not only attend the annual BFBF Rally but I work it. Why? Because I am a true believer in what the foun-dation does for the biker community. It has become a passion for some of the members, including me, who truly get what it is about. The foundation puts the rally on annually in efforts to get away from so many of the daily benefits everyone has for every cause and still be able to raise funds to help those who go down and have no other means of help, while at the same time providing a great “get away from it all” place & lots of feel good music! The Shakori Hills Park is one beautiful place to spend a weekend and some of the guests pulled in from Bike Week to Relax before going back to the grind. For those who missed it, too bad, so sad! The event was packed full of some of the best music in North Carolina with bands all weekend like Brother Esau, a Grateful Dead tribute band, who not only did the original band justice but put on a real show with the dual drummers. Yes, they have the exact set up as the original band and were so good everyone asked for an encore. I am an official Deadhead now! There was Night Shift, a rock after dark band with their female vocalist in stilettos who had the audience saying “WOW!”. Southern Reunion made their reunion debut at the rally and played classic southern rock, which is always a hit, and Cold Blue Steel had started the event’s music on Friday evening with a rush of classic country done by two young singers. Tommy Thunderfoot & The Accelerators, a blues band that blew the roof off the house, literally had people coming out of their camps. Bubba Joe & The Bruisers played pyschobilly-surf with Bubba’s hair greased down in ‘Valvoline’ and his bass player wearing gothic makeup. Just watching him pick was a show by itself. Jym Chapman & The Migrant Workers played all original music. If you listened, each song had a message in it and he also provided some eye candy for the ladies. The solo act was the amazing Victoria Axelrod who sings the blues like Janice Joplin, pleased the crowd with her charm, and had all the guys smiling. Saturday actually started with the featured battle of the bands between Neglektyd Toyz and Total Strang-ers. Total strangers won the $500 prize money and a 1st Place trophy. 5 guests picked from the crowd and given a list of items to judge by did judging. All did a great job! Sunday was Armour Christian rock and there was a jam session late Sat-urday night that even the vendors got in on. NC has got some of the best musicians around and if you haven’t seen these entertainers you are missing out! As for the rest of the rally, it was packed full too. First, there was an announcement that the raffle tickets for a new custom-built bike by Southeastern Steel Choppers were going on sale with the winning ticket to be pulled at the 2013 rally. The beer garden not only had beer but some pretty ladies who pushed the tickets and the beer. Winner of the 50/50, Brad Oakly, very generously donated his winnings back to the foundation and Will Rivera won the

biker who rode the longest distance to the rally, coming in at over 7.5 hours in the rain and Jess Lowery who drove in from West Virginia. There were raffled items from Hot Hog Leather, Cycle Gear, J&P Cycles, AutoZone, and Advance Auto. Free Dog House tees were thrown to the crowd, and the winner of the gate prize took home a $250 leather coat from Leatheup.com. Everybody got something including the vendors and volunteers. And, there was some crazy motorcycle yard art donated by Diffin Brothers Cycles. “DaBird” was the conver-sation of many because it was a crane made out of motorcycle parts. The homemade ice cream was to die for and the food was all fresh and cooked while you waited with Euro’s, Philly Cheese Steaks, Flatbread Burritos, and 4 types of French fries. A rally with really fresh food! Of course there was the usual tattoo contest with a number of contestants flashing their ink. We saw all kinds of ink, too, from handmade tats to tribal tapped tats. In the end, the reining Jamie Nelson, and co-minister with Painted Highway Ministries won for the 2nd year in a row. I was ecstatic to take runner-up with all that ink being flashed. If you’ve ever seen Jamie, or her hubby you would understand why. To be runner-up to her was a privilege especially with Alec Smelby compet-ing with the dragons embellishing his back. Total Strangers Band members did judging. On the flip side of the Rally there was another wedding, a growing tradition at the rally. Congratulations to (BFBF NC State Captain) Joel & Deanna Roberson who tied the knot on Saturday morning with Painted Highway Ministries officiat-ing. Joel has been a member for a couple of years and is one of the passionate ones whom I spoke of earlier. His new bride, Deanna, was a beautiful person who you can’t help but love. We wish them a lifetime of happiness together and wonder who will tie the knot next year? The early crew took an early morning ride every morning while the rest of us enjoyed the free coffee at the coffee barn, after which, most of us went to Dank Eats for some of the flatbread burritos! They had some great hot sauces and served each individual as if they were gourmet chefs AND we had homemade ice cream! That was refreshing considering most

rallies have carnival type food. With all of the fun and kick butt music there was also a short Memorial for Ron Lau, BFBF officer who had lost his battle to cancer 1 week prior to the rally. Ron had vowed to live long enough to be at one more rally, which he loved dearly and had volunteered the entire weekend the year before. The rally was dedicated to him and all he did for the foundation. This was one very fun, laid back, weekend with cold beer, awesome music, great food, good vendors, beautiful sur-roundings, and fantastic people! What more could you ask for? Motorcyces? They celebrated by having a big 4-day blowout on May 9-12 with music and food specials and rides at some of the most scenic roads in the area. I had believed that most of those who ride in the area had been up to Laurel Springs to this awesome establishment, but was surprised to find out that some folks who frequent Freeborne’s South had never been to the Eatery and Lodge. On Saturday, Terry Osborne led a group of folks from Freeborne’s South up there to enjoy the afternoon. I can tell you that if you don’t go at least one time this summer, you are missing a treat. The Lodge is a cozy, vintage type motor lodge that reminds of days long ago. Of course, the food and hospitality is fabulous and you will want to go back once you experience it. They are located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 248, but if you plan to stay the night, call ahead at 336-359-8008 because they have stayed pretty full so far since they opened in March. 3rd Annual CBA Of Alamance County

Motorcycle Awareness RideBy: Scott Wicker On Sunday, May 20th, The Alamance County Chapter of the CBA held their 3rd Annual Motorcycle Awareness Ride. The ride began at Down Home Harley-Davidson in Burlington. Over 40 motorcycles and over 50 people participated in the event, which was the best turn out in participation for the past 3 years. Led by member Ron Namest, the ride covered over 75 miles through Alamance and Randolph Counties. The ride made its only stop on the route at Liberty Tavern in Liberty, NC before ending at Mark’s Place near Snow Camp. Members of the Alamance County CBA served up some good food and great entertainment was provided to us by “Odds and the Ends” band. The Chapter also had a chance drawing for $100 that was won by Carla Wesson. The ride was provided to the partici-pants at no charge. The $100 Prize given in the Chance Draw-ing was the Chapter’s way of giving back to the riders in the area for their support to the Alamance County CBA. Over the years, the chapter has supported the efforts to make everyone on the road aware that they share the road with

motorcycles, too. The chapter has been instrumental also with their support of local and state drivers education programs to provide their knowledge to instructors to try to make teenagers aware of motorcycles on the road and to assist in making them aware of what riders experience in their travels. May being Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month was all the more reason for this very needed event. The event also attracted a few new members and local County Commissioner Eddie Boswell made a stop in to show his support. We would like to thank everyone with the Alamance County CBA for their hospitality and for another great and safe ride. Freedom Ride Poker Run At Smurf’s TavernBy: Caroline You know it was really good to go up to Smurf’s Tavern in Danbury for their Memorial Day Poker Run on May 26th. We registered around 11 and were ready to ride by noon. The day was absolutely beautiful, and it was really great to see all my friends from up that way. By time we arrived O’Neil had his famous barbecue, baked beans and slaw ready for us to eat. The band, Ruckus provided live music and was entertaining us as we ate and more folks were coming in to support the cause and have some fun. Congratulations to Josh Bohannon who had the best hand and Karl Rex who won the worst hand. When all was said and done the proceeds from the ride were presented to the DAV. The folks at Smurf’s Tavern have some really fun stuff coming up this summer. As you know the area around Dan-bury and Stokes County has always been a favorite of riders. Be sure to stop by Smurf’s as you are riding toward the Blue Ridge Parkway or visiting Hanging Rock State Park. Kitty Strickland is the new manager and she has got a lot exciting events planned. Riders’ Roost 22 Anniversary Party

Story and photo by Alan Dockery Memorial Day weekend lots of bikers were at Riders’ Roost Motorcycle Resort in Ferguson, NC, for the 22nd Anniversary Party. Yeah, that wonderful little place in the mountains has been welcoming Bikers for more than 20 years. Many of us have camped and partied there for a long time. For some of the regular “Roosters”, the anniversary party is their first time up there for the season, so Friday is spent with old friends from all over the area. A cold beer and helping set-ting up your site is always welcome soon after you ride in. Friday night, Dave fired up the music and karaoke in the game room. It is always funny watching friends sing and dance. Some of them are as bad as I am. After the music died down, we enjoyed sitting around the campfire catching up on where folks had been riding lately. The weather was just about perfect for the weekend. And the creek was warm enough to swim in. The new floating Party Barge at the shallow end of the swimming hole is a cool place to lie in the sun and enjoy a cold beverage. The fishing was great, too. Not only were there lots of fish, they were big, and biting. Late Saturday afternoon folks gathered near the flagpole for a Memorial Day ceremony honoring our military veterans. That night Michael Shaun Brown and the Common Ground Band took the stage. They played a variety of music and had some folks juking down front until after midnight.There are still a few parties planned for the rest of the summer, so check out the schedule and come join us.

Honoring American HeroesBy: Judy Bortz I am an American, a veteran, and a biker; three of the most basic things that feed my soul. If you’re reading this you are probably a biker, too. You know the freedom and the power of the ride; the way the wind calms your spirit, the combina-tion of machine, asphalt, and heartbeat make you realize your vulnerability, and the adrenalin rush that lifts your soul. You are probably also an American. I say these things on a purely personal level. I am not talking politics or religion, being American transcends those things, as well as race and gender. As Americans we are one. This time of year, with Memorial Day just past and the Fourth of July looming close ahead, makes most Americans aware of how great our country is, and of the concept of independence and freedom it was built on. Not all of you are veterans, but I bet someone close to you is, or was. As a vet, I am extremely aware and thankful every day for the brave men and women who have laid down their lives and given their blood so that I can be free to do the things that I love without fear of reprisal. I can travel state-to-state, beach to mountains without being stopped or detained. I can get on my bike whenever I want to and ride wherever I please. I never forget those that serve to make all of the freedoms we enjoy possible. Something (I am ashamed to say) I never really gave a lot of thought to before is the families those brave heroes left be-hind. The children, wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, broth-ers, and sisters who never got to say “Welcome Home!” Their loved ones died on foreign soil thousands of miles away. Can you imagine the sense of loss, the emptiness, the utter despair of seeing that pine coffin come out of the airplane, knowing that the person they loved was alone, and so, so far away. I grew up in the 70’s and like most rational people today; I am not proud of the reception given our veterans on their re-turn from Vietnam. I am saddened by the disrespect and hatred they had to contend with. They all had to deal with so much fighting that war, and then with all the bad reactions from the very people they fought for. Many of the men and women who are the Patriot Guard served in that conflict themselves, or have a loved one who did. When our troops finally came home from that hell, they dealt with mass feelings of hatred and blame by their own countrymen. The Patriot Guard formed to protect families of veterans fallen in this most recent war from having to experience the same kind of feelings that no one

protected them from. Not all that claim to be religious are good, and I refuse to give media to the name of an organization that perpetrates scams in the name of God. The Patriot Guard began as a virtual blockade, standing between that organization’s protes-tors and families trying to grieve and bury their hero. Patriot Guard did not fall into the trap the protestors tried suck them into. They stood strong, silent, and united, and eventually succeeded in neutralizing the power those protesters thought they had. Without confrontation and violence the organization could not sue the communities that had given them their per-mits to protest. Without the money won in lawsuits from local

governments that group has lost whatever momentum they had built up, and are less and less often creating havoc for families trying to bid their hero goodbye. The Patriot Guard however ride strong and stand tall doing everything they can to honor the men and women who fight for our freedom. On Jun 9th, I was invited to cover an event that the Patriot Guard stood flag line for; the first Snowflake event held in NC by Snowball Express. Snowball Express became a registered 501(c) (3) charity throughout the United States in September

2006. All donations are tax deductible for this type of non-profit charity. Snowball Express was developed to honor the families and children of our fallen military heroes who have died since Sep 11, 2001 in Iraq and Afghanistan. Each year they hold a 4-day all-expense paid holiday event bringing families and children of the fallen together in order to heal and share in the knowledge that they are not alone. Recently they have started doing local events throughout the year, which give local communities an opportunity to show the children they are not forgotten and that the parent they lost did not die in vain. Trisha Marshall, Regional Snowflake Coordinator and Advisory Board Member, flew in from California, specifically for today’s event, to support the efforts of the local Snowflake Team headed by Cathy Calimonte. The love Trisha has for her Snowflake children shines all around her! She told me that at one event a little girl ran up to her holding hands with a new friend, and said, “Auntie Trish, we are holding hands here, do you think our daddies see us, and are holding hands in heaven?”...Heartbreaking! This event was held in Wilmington at the Battleship North Carolina, a beautiful backdrop for a day of fun and camara-


derie. Patriot Guard stood flag line as the families entered the grounds. Decorations in red, white, and blue made the pavilion festive and bright. Kangaroo Express, The Pantry, Jones Sea-food, and Bubba Burgers supplied food, snacks, and drinks for the families and children that attended. A picnic lunch of hot dogs, hamburgers, seafood, sides, and sweets was gobbled up! The local Snowflake team and Kangaroo employees donated their time and maintained the food areas. One even wore ‘Roo” the Kangaroo mascot suit all day in the hot sun to help make the children’s day a memorable one. There were goodie bags for the kids filled with great gifts, and donations paid for all of the family members to tour the battleship. The games and activities including WII, face painting, tug of war, Frisbee, corn hole, hoola hoop, and sack races, kept the children and adults busy all afternoon. Everyone had a blast. I noticed one little girl around six or seven years old come in hanging onto her mother for dear life and by the end of the day she was run-ning and playing with the other kids as if she had known them forever! This was such an uplifting and poignant experience that I will never forget it. If you never heard of Snowball Express and the wonderful gift they give to the families of the fallen you are not alone. They haven’t publicized a lot because what these families are dealing with is very personal. Full Throttle Magazine is the first media to be invited to cover a Snowflake event in North Carolina, and I am so very honored to be able to share their story. I spoke with Dody Callahan, widow of Sgt. 1st Class Keith Callahan who was killed January 22, 2007 on patrol in Iraq by a hand controlled IED. They had four children ranging in age from 4 to 13 at the time their daddy died. They buried him in his home state of Massachusetts. The Patriot Guard stood for two days In 21º cold and protected the family from that nameless group who planned to protest his funeral. Dody took the kids to their 1st Snowball Express event 11 months later. She needed to find a way to help both herself and her kids start to heal. Snowball Express did that for them. Seeing her kids come out of the shell of sadness that had surrounded them, be-ing with other kids going through the same things helped them to grieve and to grow. They have made lifelong friendships with other families through these events, and now her oldest is graduating from high school. Rachel Nolen also took the time to speak to me. A road-side bomb killed her husband, Sgt. James Nolen November 22, 2009. She was at home, 4 ½ months pregnant with their daughter Jamie who was named after her brave daddy but will never have the opportunity to know him. Rachel took their son Bill to his first Snowball Express event in 2010 because she needed to give him his smile back. Learning that there were other kids in the same pain helped him accept his grief and made him see that it was OK to be happy again. It gave Rachel the strength and knowledge that they could get through this as a family, and grow from it. Snowball Express was named the number one choice of charities among the top 15 nonprofits serving veterans and

their families, and is recognized by Independent Charities of America. Well over 1500 children have attended snowflake Express events each year. American Airlines donates up to 9 chartered full size jets to bring these grieving families together for the annual 4-day event and reunion so they can bond, cre-ate some happy memories, and start to heal again. AMVETS Post 13 Sons Of AMVETS Ride

By: dpapabear On Saturday, June 2nd, the Post 13 AMVETS in Lexington, NC had their annual ride and poker run to raise funds for the support of local veterans. The weather could not have been any better for the event. Registration started at 10 am with about 35 bikes and 60 some persons taking part in the activi-ties leaving around 11:30. The ride followed back roads to the first stop at the AM-VETS Post 845 in Rockwell, NC where 50/50 tickets were sold. Tree won the pot and gave $40 back to the cause. We then took more of the scenic back roads to the next stop, Tamarac Marina, where 50/50 tickets were sold again. Kathy won that one and also donated $40 back. Tamarac Marina was also the stop right after noon so everyone had a chance to grab a bite for lunch while enjoying the views of the boats, water, fish, and, did I mention the bikinis? The next stop traveled more of the beautiful country roads along the lake and across the backside of High Rock Dam and north on Hwy 8 back to Amy’s Little Bar in Southmont for another chance at the 50/50 drawings. This one was won by Ron, who donated $20 back as well. Leaving the Little Bar, we headed back to our host loca-tion at the AMVETS Post 13 for the final activities. When we arrived there, everyone had a meal prepared for us. The final 50/50 drawing, door prizes donated by our local mer-chants, (whom we certainly appreciate their support), and an auction of numerous items donated as well. James, who gave back $80 for the vets, won the final 50/50. Kenneth won the poker hand, and the worst hand was claimed by James as well. All in all, the event turned out great and everyone had a good time, with a gracious amount being raised for our local veter-ans. This is an annual event and along with many other groups around the country that show their support for our veterans, so get out and take part to thank each one. “ALL GAVE SOME, SOME GAVE ALL” which allows us the freedom to take part in many of the things that we take for granted each day, so give your support to them. 15th Annual Red & White Spring Bash

By: Kathy Johnson The Red & White 15 Annual Spring Bash party was held at Crazy Shots in Hillsborough on May 26th. A lot of planning goes into this event and it shows. As expected, they had a mas-sive turn out. I think people talk about it weeks in advance and I am sure they talk about it for weeks after its over. They had great food consisting of BBQ, BBQ Chicken, and cole slaw, macaroni salad, etc. Triple Shot provided the music. Needless to say, Triple Shot is a crowd favorite wherever they play. It was also a chance for people to get the latest 81 ap-parel. There designs always have something for anyone with some style and never disappoint. If you’re lacking that look, shop them at the next event they’re set up at. I am sure you will be glad you did. I know you will be easier on my eyes. Then there is always that anticipation about who will win the TV. Well, it was not me or my friend Mr. Gooch, (Drum Roll) but the winner was Brian Thomas. CONGRATULATONS! Inaugural Spring Boone Bike Rally At High

Country Fairgrounds

By: Jeff Winbarger Friday, June 1st at 1pm the Spring Boone Bike Rally billed as “Rock-n-Roar” opened on High Country Fairgrounds with cold temperatures and a downpour, but that didn’t stop camp-ers and riders from hitting the high country. With bands taking the stage and Problem Child rocked the end of Friday night. Saturday we woke up to a cool 46º with wind, but it was sunny and this helped attract around 2000 bikers and over 30 venders. Wild Bill had bikes lined up to be pin striped all day! (Awesome talent, Wild Bill, you got it!) By mid day it had warmed enough for the frozen t-shirt contest and dunkin booth. Matthew Trull and Heather Lawson came in winners of most of the bike games. Congrats to them! Later Saturday the wet t-shirt contest ended up in a tie. Con-

7th Annual DARE Skate Night

By: Vince Doxbeck, Raleigh Police Depart-ment, BKNCII Sgt-at-Arms In May of 2012, the Blue Knights LE MC NC II Chapter decided to support the Ra-leigh Police Department Drug Abuse Resis-tance Education (DARE) Unit’s 7th Annual DARE Skate Night. DARE Skate Night is a “Proud to be Drug Free” event where DARE Students, along with their friends and fami-lies, can come out and enjoy a night of fun, laughter, roller-skating, and prize giveaways in an atmosphere of safety and encourage-ment. The event brings in over 500 partici-pants each year and is held at Jellybeans Super Skate Center in North Raleigh. At this year’s event, Blue Knights NC II donated enough money for the RPD DARE Unit to purchase four brand new mountain bikes from our local Wal-Mart store to be given away in our free raffle. Each bike was different and unique and was given away to four very excited DARE Students during the super charged Grand Prize drawing. The bikes were rolled out onto the skate floor ac-companied by three NC II Chapter Members, the DARE Officers, and the RPD Police Explorers. All of the attending students then surrounded everyone on the skate floor for the big drawing. There was electricity in the air as the winning tickets (two girls and two boys) were drawn. Each winner got to choose which bike they wanted as their num-ber was called and then were escorted off the floor as proud and happy as they could be. D.A.R.E.’s (Drug Abuse Resistance Educa-tion) primary mission is to provide children with the information and skills they need to live drug-and-violence-free lives and to equip kids with the tools that will enable

them to avoid negative influences and allow them to focus on their strengths and potential. D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergar-ten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives. The D.A.R.E. curriculum is designed to be taught by police officers whose training and experience gives them the background needed to answer the sophisticated questions often posed by young students about drugs and crime and has been a huge part of Law Enforcement since the 1980’s. The Raleigh Police Department DARE Program is the largest DARE Program in North Carolina reaching over 4,000 students per year and we are so very proud to have the support of Blue Knights NC II. Their contribu-tion to Skate Night 2012 helped make this event even more special to all of our DARE students and families and we look forward to working with them again for many years to come. Having the support of the entire Blue Knights Organization strengthens the message DARE conveys to young people all over the world! The BLUE KNIGHTS® are a non-profit, fraternal organization consisting of active and retired law enforcement men and women who enjoy riding motorcycles.

1st Annual Ride To Unify

By: Jamie Faucette The 1st Annual Ride To Unify took place on April 28th at Down Home Harley-Davidson in Burlington. Despite the chilly weather, there were 25 riders who participated in the hour-long scenic ride. Project Unify unites typical developing children with children that have mental and physical disabili-ties to compete and participate in team sports together. Along with the other festivities, there were various items that were raffled off including a Harley-Davidson leather jacket of your choice. Burlington’s own H.O.G. Director, William Blanchard, was the lucky winner. After expenses, a total of $942 was raised to help Special Olympics of Alamance County. The monies raised will fund players’ expenses in order to travel to the team’s sporting events. To top it all off, we were able to honor a very special guest and member of Project to Unify, Katie Johnson, a fourth grader at Andrews Elementary School, with a collectable plush horse that was just as big as she was. Katie’s excitement and radiant smile brought out the “sunshine” on a cloudy day. Scott Reavis, Special Olympics Coordinator of Alamance County, and Texas Roadhouse deserve special thanks for pre-paring and providing the delicious meal for us. Others I would like to thank are Down Home Harley-Davidson’s General Manager, Bob Fitzpatrick for his generosity and providing great door prizes. Beverly Corbett also deserves recognition for helping to organize and lead the ride. Thanks to Hwy 49 Band for the great entertainment they provided for us. Thanks also to Lackey Painting, Sherwin Williams, and Wells Fargo for making Katie’s face light up and to all the volunteers who helped and especially those who came out to support Special Olympics. We are looking forward to making the Ride To Unify an an-nual event.

3rd Annual AMCA Southern National Swap MeetBy: Mark Infield The 3rd Annual Antique Motorcycle Club of Ameri-ca’s Southern National Meet at Denton Farm Park was held on May 18-19. This is an event that seemed like it was way off in the future and then, poof, it was here! In years past, I was always committed somewhere else and unable to attend and my son, Lincoln, would come home all excited about what he had seen. He always took a bunch of pictures and showed them to me, but it wasn’t the same as being there. This year was different. It was like an epiphany. Everything fell into place and I was finally able to attend this event. I rode in with the Kickstart Classic on Friday after-noon and thoroughly enjoyed visiting the vendors and looking at antique motorcycles. However, Saturday is the big day at this event and this year’s theme was flatheads, so being this close to home I rode on to High Point for a good night’s sleep in my own bed. Early Saturday morning we headed back to Denton Farm Park with our 1973 Harley-Davidson Servicar, which is a flathead, in tow. We set up our table and tent and at 9 am the Motor Maids, a classic all women’s motorcycle club led a “road Run” of antique motorcycles out across the backroads of Davidson County. Around noon, celebrity emcee and owner of Wheels Through Time Motorcycle Museum in Maggie Valley, NC, Dale Walksler an expert on the subject of motorcycles described each motorcycle and interviewed each owner/rider for the crowd as the Parade of Antique Motorcycles passed by. As you know, each motorcycle has it’s own history and some stories that follow them. This made for a very interesting foray into the history of motorcycles. How fortunate we are to have the AMCA Spring National Meet and Wheels Through Time right here in our back yard. Immediately following the Parade of Antique Motorcycles the field events took place. These were bike games played from the seat of antique motorcycles. Many of you have seen some form of bike games, but these were unique since many of these machines had foot operated ‘rocker’ clutches. It was, indeed, a feat of skill to drop clothes pins into containers that got progressively smaller and to toss bicycle tires over traffic cones on these old bikes. It was fun to watch, too. In a building they also used as a dining hall all flathead powered motorcycles were displayed and there was what they called the “Concourse D’Ordinaire” – a bike show for the common bike. The only qualifications to enter were that it be old and in running order. It was a drooler. What a great day! That evening, a banquet was held, but fatigue had her way with me and we headed back to High Point. Sunday, the serious judging took place and awards were presented. The Antique Motorcycle Club of America takes this part of the event VERY seriously and members work hard to earn coveted awards at their events. The motorcycles are gor-geous!

Ricky was an official with the AHDRA for many years and a great friend to the biker community in the Alamance County area. For the last 6 years, “Tricky Ricky’s” brother Doug has planned and organized the event with the help of many friends and family. The first two years, the ride benefited a child or teenager in the area that has gone through physical challenges or illnesses. Four years ago, the ride benefited then 3-year-old Reagan Allison who suffered from Acute Lymphoblastic Leu-kemia. The 1st year, the ride was held for Samantha Harvell, a teenager suffering from Osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer. This is the 4th year that the ride benefited Sam’s Wish Fund at Kids Path of Hospice of Alamance and Caswell Counties, an organization that does many great things at no cost to those they are helping. Whether it is making a dream come true like a trip to the zoo or a hot air balloon ride, counseling a sick child, a trip to the beach, or a child who is dealing with the loss of a loved one, they are a true blessing. 210 bikes participated on the ride, which started at 3 Stooges Cycles near Elon College. The ride made stops at 4th St. Boot-

leggers in Mebane and Cuz’s in the Hopedale community be-fore ending at the after party at Jimmy Cable’s Farm near Elon College. There, over 2000 people were treated to great food and lots of door prizes were given away as well. Bands Too Far Gone, Back Porch Orchestra, Down-n-Dirty, The Mason Lovette Band, Sok Monkee, and Lucky 13 provided entertain-ment. A 50/50 drawing was held and the winning hands from the run were announced. Everyone that participated became members of the Awe-some Possum Club. Doug Shambley, the ride’s organizer

announced that if over $25,000 was raised he would voluntarily have his head shaved. In all, over $26,000 was raised through donations, the ride, raffle ticket sales, and event t-shirt sales and given in memory of Saman-tha. Sorry about your hair Doug! Doug and everyone that made this event happen would like to thank those who participated, all the sponsors, and everyone who donated items, their time, and talents in making the ride another huge suc-cess. Remember! Ride Safe!
