An update is inserted to celebrate that the Trustees have designated $30,000 in Holley funds to this project, and the Holston Conference Foundation has given a $5,000 grant in honor of Rev. Tom Lynch. Your support is appreciated because this elevator is an investment in our future. It will extend practical hospitality to members and guests alike. 2. Recently, Bishop James Swanson spoke to The Call about the denomination’s “Call to Action” for reordering the church around its disciple-making mission. Here is an excerpt. How is this different from any other report that calls for change in the church? Bishop Swanson : The "Call to Action" gives concrete reality to the fact that “We’re in trouble.” The research shows that not only are we in the midst of declining attendance and membership, we also have other serious problems such as a lack of trust between the units of the church. The "Call to Action" gives us a plan to address those realities. What changes will be most obvious to church members? Bishop Swanson : There will be more emphasis on the local church. The "Call to Action" is not a plan to revitalize the general church, but a plan that asks, “How do we live into the vision that Christ left for us? How do we help the local church live into its own vision, rather than having the general church or conference tell the local church what to do?” Each local church will develop a “Congregational Ministry Plan” for their Charge Conferences this fall. It will ask questions about needs in their communities, challenges and threats, signs of vitality and strength, actions they can take to glorify God, and so on. The answers to these ques- tions will help the congregation develop a plan that is tailored to their church and undergirded in prayer. Congregations will be accountable for the plans they develop, and I will present them to the 2012 General Conference as our goal for the next 10 years. What will cause the "Call to Action" to succeed -- or fail? Bishop Swanson : My biggest concern is that we won’t follow through. We’ve got to restructure our local churches and focus on what researchers found were the “4 Key Drivers to Vitality.” Regardless of church size, vital congregations have : ►Effective pastoral leadership with aspects of management, visioning, and inspiration ►Multiple small groups and programs for children and youth ►Mix of traditional and contemporary worship services ►High percentage of spiritually engaged laity in leadership roles The Trinity Torch Pastor: Rev. We ought never to be satisfied with our churches just as they are. If we can win 50 to Christ, why can’t we win 100? We ought never to walk past poverty and abuse and be unconcerned. We ought never to allow a child to have an empty plate without wanting to do something about it. We’ve got to create a hunger and passion to be the Christ in our hurting communities. I’m expecting 100% participation. I expect our people to be faithful. Being vital congregations is hard. It is not an easy task to follow Jesus. I hope our churches will let the winds of the Holy Spirit blow a change across their communities. I hope they will be creative and try to see their communities with new eyes. I’ve seen what our people can do when they get excited. I know they can do it, if they will challenge themselves. Please pray that we will be faithful in discerning God’s will for us and then be obedient in carrying out His plans and purposes. Blessings, Pastor David

1. As we begin Year 3 together, our elevator campaign is

progressing. Two years ago, an elevator to replace our lift was

the #1 goal expressed by Trinity members. An update is inserted

to celebrate that the Trustees have designated $30,000 in Holley

funds to this project, and the Holston Conference Foundation has

given a $5,000 grant in honor of Rev. Tom Lynch. Your support

is appreciated because this elevator is an investment in our future.

It will extend practical hospitality to members and guests alike.

2. Recently, Bishop James Swanson spoke to The Call

about the denomination’s “Call to Action” for reordering the

church around its disciple-making mission. Here is an excerpt.

How is this different from any other report that calls for

change in the church? Bishop Swanson: The "Call to Action"

gives concrete reality to the fact that “We’re in trouble.” The

research shows that not only are we in the midst of declining

attendance and membership, we also have other serious problems

such as a lack of trust between the units of the church. The "Call

to Action" gives us a plan to address those realities.

What changes will be most obvious to church members?

Bishop Swanson: There will be more emphasis on the local

church. The "Call to Action" is not a plan to revitalize the general

church, but a plan that asks, “How do we live into the vision that

Christ left for us? How do we help the local church live into its

own vision, rather than having the general church or conference

tell the local church what to do?” Each local church will develop

a “Congregational Ministry Plan” for their Charge Conferences

this fall. It will ask questions about needs in their communities,

challenges and threats, signs of vitality and strength, actions they

can take to glorify God, and so on. The answers to these ques-

tions will help the congregation develop a plan that is tailored to

their church and undergirded in prayer. Congregations will be

accountable for the plans they develop, and I will present them to

the 2012 General Conference as our goal for the next 10 years.

What will cause the "Call to Action" to succeed -- or fail?

Bishop Swanson: My biggest concern is that we won’t follow

through. We’ve got to restructure our local churches and focus

on what researchers found were the “4 Key Drivers to Vitality.”

Regardless of church size, vital congregations have:

►Effective pastoral leadership with aspects of management,

visioning, and inspiration

►Multiple small groups and programs for children and youth

►Mix of traditional and contemporary worship services

►High percentage of spiritually engaged laity in leadership roles

JULY 2011

Even if our churches don’t meet all their goals, they will still

become much more productive. We ought never to be satisfied

with our churches just as they are. If we can win 50 to Christ, why

can’t we win 100? We ought never to walk past poverty and

abuse and be unconcerned. We ought never to allow a child to

have an empty plate without wanting to do something about it.

We’ve got to create a hunger and passion to be the Christ in our

hurting communities. I’m expecting 100% participation. I expect

our people to be faithful. Being vital congregations is hard. It is

not an easy task to follow Jesus. I hope our churches will let the

winds of the Holy Spirit blow a change across their communities.

I hope they will be creative and try to see their communities with
