JULY 19, 2020 SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Reflections on today's Gospel

MATTHEW 13: 24-43 (Wisdom 12:13,16-19; Psalm 86; Romans 8:26-27)

KEY VERSE:

"Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come from?" (v. 27)

TO KNOW: Jesus was a good teacher who employed parables, using the ordinary things of life to reveal the deep mysteries of God's reign. The parables often centered on the domestic, industrial and agricultural work of the community. The parable aroused curiosity, and invited Jesus' audience to search for the meaning, which often applied to their own lives. The parable of the weeds among the wheat revealed that good and evil would exist alongside one another until the Day of Judgment. The weeds in the story were darnel, a noxious plant that closely resembled the wheat. In the early stages of development, it was impossible to distinguish the one from the other. When the wheat ripened, the experienced eye would be able to differentiate between the two. The problem was that the roots were so intertwined that the weeds could not be uprooted without tearing up the wheat. So it is with evil; it is difficult to detect in its early stages until it grows strong and destroys what is good. Jesus cautioned the disciples not to attempt to forcibly root out the unbelievers among their fellow Jews. The harvest (v. 30) was a common Old Testament symbol for the final judgment. Jesus’ advice was patient tolerance until God would render his verdict on saint and sinner.

TO LOVE: In what ways do I judge others rather than leaving that judgment to God?

TO SERVE: Lord Jesus, help me to persist in my good work despite the evil that surrounds me

We are so glad you joined us! If you are new to our parish, we would like to invite you to become a member.

The Welcome Booth in the vestibule is open the first full weekend of every month or come by the Parish Office.

Visit our website for a registration form or more information.

During this difficult time in our community, we have served many families that have never needed food pantry assistance before. Our pantry needs have continued to grow with more demand in specific areas. As you can

understand, there is a need for disinfectants, hand sanitizers, and surgical masks and gloves. We are also in need of all toiletry items and general household supplies.

As for the food supply, our most needed item is meat. If you are able to donate any quantities of fresh or frozen meat, direct from grocery store to Saint Raphael pantry, please call the church office to set an appointment so the food pantry will be able to transfer the meat immediately into freezer space. We ask that you do not bring meat from home freezers as this could potentially create a health risk. Thank you for your continued support. For appointment please call 479-756-6711.

PRE 2020-2021 We are still trying to decide how to have classes while ensuring the safety of our children and catechists. This will mean necessary changes to the program which we will reveal over the next few months. Registrations have begun. However, we will call each family we have in the system who have students entering into second year sacramental preparation to register them for classes first.

FIRST COMMUNION AND CONFIRMATION MASSES previously scheduled for April and May have been rescheduled during the months of September thru November. If you still do not know the scheduled date for your child, you need to call the office. 479-756-6711.

RCIA If you or someone you know is interested in the Catholic Faith

and wants to learn more about the Church, our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation) classes will begin this fall.

In the Covid-19 world which we live, we need to look at how many people are signing up before deciding a start date,

location, and frequency of the class. For these reasons, call the office at 479.756.6711

if you are interested in the class and we will stay in touch with you about the nature of classes in 2020-2021.

Rules about coming to Mass: • If you have been diagnosed with Covid-19, do not come to Church. • If you have been exposed to an individual diagnosed with Covid-19, whether family, friend, coworker, please refrain from coming to Mass and risking others. • If someone in your workplace was diagnosed with Covid-19, even if you were not near this person, consider staying away from Masses for a few weeks.

The symptoms of Covid-19 are a cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fever chills, muscle pain, sore throat or loss of taste or smell. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. Remember, the bishop has dispensed the obligation of attending Sunday Masses until further notice.

Gospel Reflection from Alex Smith —Our Summer Seminarian

Being Childlike for God

Growing up in my family’s household, my siblings and I watched all the Disney classics. My two-favorite had to be Mary Poppins and Peter Pan. What I liked about the movies was, of course, the iconic songs. However, one thing I also believe these movies taught me was the importance of being childlike. Meaning these movies taught me to be imaginative, creative, and to see beauty/ joy in the world.

This past Wednesday’s Gospel (Mt 11:25-27), Jesus boldly states, “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the child-like.” What does it mean to be childlike for God? Are not people who are wise and learned to understand the Father? The short answer is that it depends on what you mean to be wise and learned. You see, throughout the Gospel, Jesus speaks about being childlike. For one, being childlike does not make one ignorant. Being childlike is also about being open, willing to discern, willing to allow the Spirit to move. Childlike is the willingness to forgive and love. Being child-like for the Father means one is willing to accept that they do not have all the answers and are eager to learn.

The Gospel message ought to mean something to us as well. We are all called to be childlike. It is why we gather to pray and celebrate our faith. I know as a son, as a servant to you all, and brother of Christ, it is hard to live “childlike.” But the real weight for us is that we are afraid. It is scary to be open to the Lord. It is scary to share with Him all our worries and wounds. It might even be scary to think our wounds are not all the same. Why? Because we don’t want to be judged or ridiculed. We want to be right. But deep down, we all know Jesus is calling us to be more. Jesus does not want us to be childish. Rather Jesus desires that we be childlike. What are the qualities of children you wish to culti-vate: innocence, trust, or transparency? Or is it the ability to see beauty and joy in the world? Today I invite you to be childlike (not childish). Allow your inner child to emerge! You may find that your day is more relaxed, enjoyable, and peaceful!
