« 6 3ª A K 10 2© 3 2¨ Q 8 6 4 2

Due to a slight bidding misunderstanding andpartner’s flair for the spectacular you find yourself inthe rather optimistic contract of 7ª!

West leads a trump and East follows with a lowtrump. Plan the play. Thanks to Eddie Kantar for theproblem.

Solution to Quiz #1« A 10 3 2ª J 9 5© Q J 4¨ K 10 8

« K Q J 9ª A 4© A 10 9 8¨ A J 9

The contract is 3NT. West leads the ª3. You playthe 9. East plays the 10, which you duck. East con-tinues with the ªK, West playing the 2. Where doyou go from here?

Kantar’s answer: First, avoid taking any finessesif you don’t have to. Finesses never work in quizzes,by the way. You can avoid all finesses and ensure yourcontract providing West has no more than five heartsand fewer than four spades.

Play the king, queen and 9 of spades to dummy’s10, retaining the ace as a later entry. Now the ªJ,discarding a diamond. East can take two more hearts, and you discard another diamond and a club, anddummy two diamonds. West must now break fromone minor or the other, either play giving you yourninth trick.

Washington DC’s last NABC, held in the Sum-mer of 1993, featured some expected and some not-so-expected results, but the highlight of the tourna-ment was the ‘home team’ wins in Flight B of theGrand National Teams and in the IMP Pairs.

The home team was a five-man squad from Dis-trict 6: Eric Greco and Philip Greco, Annandale VA;Kefu Xu and Harry Zhou, Baltimore MD, and DavidBetter, Belcamp MD.

In the final round, Philip Greco took advantageof a defensive slip to land a touch-and-go game.

Making nine tricks was worth 10 IMPs for thewinning team.

A pair of Precision players from the Washingtonarea won the IMP Pairs with strong games in the fi-nal two sessions.

The win was the first national title for Bob Klein,Dunn Loring VA, and David Ruderman, BurtonsvilleMD. This was a key deal:

In the Flight A GNT, three Bermuda Bowl cham-pions teamed with “the three kids” to win the event.

The champions: Hugh Ross, a three-time Ber-muda Bowl champion, plus Chip Martel and LewStansby, who won the Bermuda Bowl in 1985 and1987 (and in 2001 in Paris) and the World Open Pairsin 1982.

Ross and “the three kids” – as he described JeffFerro, Brad Moss and Ravindra Murthy – nearlydidn’t make it to the national final. In their District21 final, they trailed a good team by 45 IMPs with 16boards to go.

They rallied to win the final quarter by 51. Theyadded Martel and Stansby from the team they defeatedin the district semifinal.

At the other table, Martel played the same con-tract but escaped for down five (minus 1100), earn-ing the team a 7-IMP swing.

The Flight C champs – District 3 representativesStephen Arsham, North Brunswick NJ; Richard Ross,Highland Park NJ; Feng Liu, New Brunswick NJ;Steve Pessin, East Brunswick NJ, and George Shamy,Cranbury NJ – had an 11-IMP swing on this deal froma semifinal match.

with a doubleton club.Pessin’s decision to “super accept” with only

three trumps provided the impetus for Liu’s leap toslam. He backed his aggressive bidding with excel-lent play.

West led his singleton spade, won perforce indummy. The play went quickly: diamond ruff, spadeto dummy, diamond ruff, spade to dummy, diamondruff. Liu returned to dummy with the ªA and ruffedanother diamond, discovering the 5-3 split. This wasthe five-card ending:

Liu cashed the «J and West was forced to pitch aheart – a discard from either minor-suit holding wouldspell the end for the defense.

Liu pitched dummy’s ©J and the spotlight turnedon East. If East retained his heart guard, Liu couldplay the ªK and another heart, forcing East to breakclubs. Considering West’s opening bid, Liu was un-likely to misguess clubs.

In practice, East discarded a heart and Liu’s ªK-9were both good.

Note that it would have done East no good tohold hearts. If he had bared the ¨J at any point,Liu could play his ̈ Q and pin the jack for his slam-going trick.

At the other table, North-South bid 4« and madefive for plus 450.

When the auction and your hand tell you thatdeclarer is virtually certain to make his contract, it’stime for desperate measures.

Rita Shugart, playing in the IMP Pairs with BrianGlubok, found a lead declarer couldn’t fathom – andbefore he knew it, declarer’s cold contract was in thedumper.

Declarer, reading the lead as a singleton, wondummy’s ace and set about to establish the club suitby leading the queen. Declarer was somewhat sur-prised when Glubok followed with the ̈10 – andshocked when Shugart won the king.

Shugart took Glubok’s ̈10 play as suit prefer-ence for hearts and shifted to the ª10. Declarer wondummy’s ace and, hopeful that Glubok had two clubsand three trumps, played the ¨J.

His plan was to discard a diamond if Glubok re-fused to ruff, then ruff two diamonds in dummy forhis contract. If Glubok had three trumps and ruffedthe ̈ J, declarer could overruff, play two rounds oftrumps, ending in dummy, and discard losing dia-monds on the good clubs.

The result produced plus 15 IMPs for Shugartand Glubok.

The GNT was originally a North American con-test with all 25 ACBL districts participating. Now itis a United States event, with only the 23 U.S. dis-tricts participating.

In 1985 the event was subdivided into three sepa-rate events. Another change came in 2001 when theGNT Championship Flight -- for players with morethan 5,000 masterpoints -- was created. Flight A isnow a 0-5000 event.

The winners in each event will have their namesengraved on the Morehead Trophy, donated by TheNew York Times in memory of its longtime bridgeeditor Albert H. Morehead.

Albert H. MoreheadMorehead (1909-1966) was born in Flintstone

GA and educated at Baylor and Harvard. ElyCulbertson hired him in 1932 because of his outstand-ing ability as a player and analyst and made him tech-nical editor of The Bridge World in 1933. He provedso invaluable that in 1934 he was made general man-ager of all Culbertson enterprises. He was only 25when he played on the Culbertson team that defeatedthe British in the second international match for theSchwab Cup.

Morehead was the first bridge editor of The NewYork Times with a Sunday column from 1935 and adaily column from 1959. He resigned from the Timeslate in 1963 to devote full time to writing, editingand publishing of the dictionaries, encyclopedias andthesauruses that made him one of the foremost Ameri-can lexicographers.

During those years, Morehead found time for tre-mendous service to organized bridge. He was an of-ficer of the United States Bridge Association whenthat organization amalgamated with the AmericanBridge League in 1937.

He became a governor of the newly formed ACBLand served as president in 1943 and chairman of theboard from 1943 to 1945. He was named ACBL Hon-orary Member in 1946.

Morehead was a member of the National LawsCommission and was in charge of production of theInternational Laws of Contract Bridge. He was alsothe author of the constitution of the World BridgeFederation -- the first formal definition of the scope, structure, powers and duties of that organization.

Morehead was named to the ACBL Bridge Hallof Fame in 1996.

Some insight into the man behind all this talentcan be found in his obituary in the November 1966issue of the Bridge Bulletin. Editor Dick Frey wrote:

“No one ever saw him lose his temper at thebridge table or heard him speak an unkind word to apartner. He smiled often, but the only player he everlaughed at was himself.

“Rarely if ever did he turn down a plea for help.Writing this, I am proud to acknowledge the debt Iowe him and to claim that he was my best friend. Thesecret of his greatness was that there are scores ofothers who will truly say exactly this of Albert HodgesMorehead.”

Alfred SheinwoldAlfred Sheinwold (1912–1997) was one of the

greatest bridge writers in the history of the game. Hewas inducted into the Bridge Hall of Fame in 1996.

His syndicated bridge column was considered bymany to be the best – he had a knack for getting hispoint across to even the least experienced players. He managed this by making sure that every columnhad only one main point, marking it easier for hisreaders to focus.

“You could read a Sheinwold column and knowin an instant that nobody else could have written it,”said Frank Stewart, co-author of the column. “He en-lightened and entertained players through seven de-cades and earned millions of fans.”

Sheinwold was an editor of The Bridge Worldfrom 1934 to 1963 and editor of The Bridge Bulletinfrom 1953 to 1958. He was also the author of per-haps the most successful bridge book ever written, 5Weeks to Winning Bridge, a book that sold in the mil-lions.

Sheinwold served as chairman of the ACBL LawsCommission from 1964 to 1975, as chairman of theappeals committees at NABCs and as chairman ofthe ACBL Board of Governors from 1970 to 1973.He was named ACBL Honorary Member of the Yearin 1983.

Robin Mac NabRobin Mac Nab (1915–1985) served as a mem-

ber of the ACBL Board of Directors from 1956 to1981. He was ACBL president in 1965. He was a pastpresident of the Western Conference, a member ofthe ACBL Laws Commission and a member of theexecutive council of the World Bridge Federation.

Mac Nab, a graduate of Cornell University, wasa member of the U.S. Olympic track and field squadin 1936.

ACBL allows the use of Braille cards, but theymust be supplied by the player who requests theiruse, so Timanus and Hertz created several of the spe-cial decks.

Modifying game components to allow Timanusto participate is nothing new to Hertz. “When we wereyounger, we played all kinds of board games, but thetrick was to find ways to include Eddie,” he said. Thegroup even came up with their own name for the pro-cess — “Eddie-fying”.

“Eddie-fying a game requires imagination, butwe always came up with a solution, even for gameslike football,” said Hertz. Their football solution wasto make Timanus the quarterback for both teams, sothat the real strategy lay in which side could best planthe blind player’s pass attempts during the huddle.

Timanus was able to parlay his love of gamesand trivia into multiple Jeopardy championships. In1999, Timanus won five days in a row on the populargame show earning $69,700. He was invited back toplay in the program’s Tournament of Champions(open only to other strong contenders) later that year, and made it to the semifinal round to earn another$5000.

With all of his accomplishments, Timanus hasrecently added one more. He was married two weeksago to his girlfriend, Kelli.

“Even though I’m a newlywed, I do have mywife’s permission to be here. She’s not a bridge widowyet!”

Timanus and Hertz will continue to play thisweekend and next weekend.

teers. I find them to be loving human beings, alwayswilling to help.”

He is taking action to show the volunteers justhow much they are appreciated. He gives certificatesof merit and appreciation to outstanding personswherever he goes. Not a lot of certificates – they goonly to those who truly deserve them.

He especially remembers Yuki, a Japanese vol-unteer who is suffering from cancer. She volunteeredto drive George and his wife Mari on a five-hour driveto Penticton, BC. She even prepared a picnic lunchthat she served as they stopped in a beautiful spot ina national park.

Retek winces a bit when he thinks of all that hasto be done to make the world championships gosmoothly. It appears that the European delegation isgoing to be smaller than originally expected – an-other result of 9/11. “The host hotels are sold out oncertain days, but some still have rooms. They haveextended the deadline for applying for rooms to Mon-day night.” (That’s a change from yesterday’s Bulle-tin where the deadline was listed as tomorrow night.Retek called the convention bureau and pointed outthat Sunday was an unreasonable day since the officeis closed on Saturday and Sunday).

“We will welcome everyone who comes toMontreal, whether they have registered in advanceor not,” said Retek. He added a reminder than play-ers MUST register at least a day early for any eventin which they wish to compete.

Retek is fully aware that the ACBL has an ageproblem – our members are growing old! “We’re tak-ing action,” he said. “Mini-bridge, which was devel-oped in Europe, is gaining popularity here. Our Bridgeat Schools program should help school officials real-ize that bridge could be a helpful part of the curricu-lum.” He talked about the work Barbara Heller hasdone to promote this program. Others who have beenactive include Gerard Wood, Charity Sack, BethMaloney-Refaie and David Idleman.

Retek feels that the ACBL is moving forwardunder the new management – “Jay Baum has someencouraging plans.” However, he feels that the ACBLshould get some help from the cities where we holdtournaments. They should provide us with some sortof incentive to interest us in coming to their city.”

He also is hoping for good things from the spon-sorship committee, headed by Al Levy. Another com-mittee that may help is the Canadian Affairs Com-mittee under Harriette Buckman as chair. “The pur-pose of this committee is to facilitate friendly inter-action between the Canadian Bridge Federation andthe ACBL,” said Retek.

Retek also told us his idea for a replacement forthe Retek Knockout Teams – those are events in whichyou lose in the first round, “like me,” said Retek. Onthe first day the 16 teams play a Swiss to reduce thefield to four teams. Those four play board-a-match inthe first session the following day. In the last session, the top two teams play in a KO for first and secondplace, and the other two teams fight it our for third. The method makes sure that everybody plays a fullday each day, rather than being left dangling afterlosing an afternoon match.

That proves Retek is a bridge player as well as anadministrator. Here’s a hand he played recently wherehe had to come up with a second plan when the firstone failed.

Retek and Brian Fraser don’t play transfers – 2©was two-way Stayman. East was suggesting a lead

with his 2ª bid, but his action was turned againsthim.

West of course opened his singleton heart, wonby Retek. He led a diamond, and West ducked intempo. Retek as a result was quite sure West didn’thave the ©Q, so he finessed the 8 and was unhappy tosee East win the 10. East could have taken his twoheart tricks here, but then Retek could score his 10th

trick by ruffing a fourth heart with the king. He wasquite sure West had the trump queen as a result ofEast’s overcall.

East, Bill Preble, saw the problem and returnedhis second diamond instead of cashing hearts. Retektook the ace, cashed the «K and passed the «J. Hecontinued with a spade to the ace and cashed the ¨A.He crossed to the ©K and put West in with the ©Q.West was able to cash the ¨K, but then had to giveRetek his 10th trick with the ̈ Q.

What if East had cashed one heart before shift-ing back to diamonds? “I would have won and ledthe «J following by a finesse to the «10. That wouldremove East’s last trump, so now I would get out witha heart. East would not be able to prevent me fromruffing the fourth heart with the king for my game.”

Now it was up to me to lead. I settled for a mun-dane heart and conceded 1430. Of course 7¨ (or anunlikely 7NT) can’t be set, but if I had led a diamondagainst 6ª declarer (Grant Baze) might still be think-ing....

Only my initial misplay made this deal interest-ing. I opened 1NT as South and played there on adiamond lead to my 10. West ducked the ©K and wonthe third round of diamonds to play a fourth diamondas East pitched two spades. It should have been obvi-ous to me to pitch a club and run the ¨Q — but blamethe jet lag.

I actually pitched a club and led a spade to thequeen and king. Back came a spade and I realized Idid not have the entries for a club finesse — a thirdspade would block the entries. Still, the ¨A and an-other club would have been quite enough to collectplus 150.

But I missed that too. Instead I cashed the rest ofthe spades. This was the position on the fourth round:

West pitched a club and I triumphantly played aclub from dummy, followed by the ̈A and anotherclub to collect two heart tricks from the ending. Butall West has to do is to pitch a heart in the ending. Now when I throw a heart from the dummy to playthe ªA and another heart, East can overtake and casha heart and I still have a club to lose. Perhaps Westwas jet-lagged too.
