PERSONAL WORD GIFTS TO GLORIFY GOD AND TO REMEMBER THOSE WE LOVEOne of my favorite escapes during our annual family vacation is to read something that has nothing to do with sermons, scripture, or church leadership. I love those topics, but I spend an inordinate amount of my reading time every week consuming page after page of the same kind of books. Ironically, I’ve also found that “letting the land lie fallow” and avoiding those subjects actually makes me think about them with a clearer mind, so I try and choose vacation books that will engage another portion of my brain.

This year I inadvertently dedicated to Theodore Roosevelt, and ended up reading three and a half biographies of our 26th President, about whom I previously knew very little. His passion for life, his commitment to principle, and his seemingly unending supply of child-like energy have made me a big fan. It also strikes me how often his notion of authentic leadership sounds eerily prophetic.

On April 23, 1910, while delivering a speech at the Sorbonne, the (then former) President said: “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”

Roosevelt’s point is that we make a choice in life whether we will be bystanders or believers, whether we will actively engage the things that make for life, and even risk massive failure, or we will quietly watch from the sidelines, critiquing the world from the safety of our spectatorship. While this was true in 1910, it is just as poignantly true in 2016. We have more information at our fingertips, more opportunity to comment on the world thanks to social media, and a much larger sideline to stand on. I daresay it has never been easier to be a spectator than it is these days.

And yet we profess a faith that declares we have been made for a purpose. We have been set apart as a people to do the work of Christ in the world. Of all the world’s citizens, Christians have the least right to stand by and criticize while life passes them by. We are called to speak and act and think as “ambassadors for Christ,” and that involves stepping out from the safety of the shadows and into the risk-laden arena. One pastor suggests that Jesus’ favorite word was “Go!” God seems to care less about our success and failure, and more about our willingness to try.

Let it be said of us and our season to walk this earth that, even in the face of failure, we dared greatly.

Rachel Saliba has joined Trinity as Rev. David Thompson’s Administrative Assis-tant to support Youth and Family Ministry. She moved to Birmingham in October 2014

and became a member of Trinity soon after. Rachel previously worked as a Client Support Associate at Oakworth Capital Bank. Rachel graduated from the University of Mississippi with a de-gree in music in 2014.
