JULY 12, 2020 FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Reflections on today's Gospel

MATTHEW 13: 1-23 (Zechariah 9:9-10; Psalm 145; Romans 8:9, 11-13)

KEY VERSE: "But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it" (v. 23).

TO KNOW: A parable (Hebrew, mashal) is an implied comparison, which is not always obvious. Once per-ceived it sheds new light on the subject. A parable designates a wide variety of literary forms: axioms, proverbs, similitudes and allegories. Jesus' parables were primarily stories that invited the hearer to search for the meaning of the truths he was teaching. Jesus was a wise teacher who used examples from everyday life to illustrate the deep mysteries of God's reign. In the parable of the sower, the seed of God's word was sown on unproductive soil. Most of the effort was wasted because many hearts were not pre-pared to understand the meaning of Jesus' message. Jesus told his disciples that they were blessed because they had been given the grace to comprehend his words. They must persevere in their task of proclaim-ing God's reign no matter how few accepted their message or rewarded them for their work. Jesus as-sured them of their ultimate success, comparing it to the enormous crop that would be produced by their labors. Ten times would have been more than any farmer would have expected, but thirty times, sixty times, and one hundred times was more than they could ever imagine!

During this difficult time in our community, we have served many families that have never needed food pantry assis-tance before. Our pantry needs have continued to grow with more demand in specific areas. As you can understand,

there is a need for disinfectants, hand sanitizers, and surgical masks and gloves. We are also in need of all toiletry items and general household sup-plies.

As for the food supply, our most needed item is meat. If you are able to donate any quantities of fresh or frozen meat, direct from grocery store to Saint Raphael pantry, please call the church office to set an appointment so the food pantry will be able to transfer the meat immediately into freezer space. We ask that you do not bring meat from home freezers as this could potentially create a health risk. Thank you for your continued support. For appointment please call 479-756-6711.

I have received no new phone calls from the Health Dept. regarding anyone attending Mass and then testing positive for Covid-19, however I do feel as though they have fallen behind on Contact Tracing so I encourage everyone to still be cautious when you are out and about or attending Mass. PLEASE WEAR YOUR MASKS

Here are the rules about coming to Mass: • If you have been diagnosed with Covid-19, do not come to Church. • If you have been exposed to an individual diagnosed with Covid-19, whether family, friend, coworker, please refrain from coming to Mass and risking others. • If someone in your workplace was diagnosed with Covid-19, even if you were not near this person, consider staying away from Masses for a few weeks.

The symptoms of Covid-19 are a cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fever chills, muscle pain, sore throat or loss of taste or smell. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. Remember, the bishop has dispensed the obligation of attending Sunday Masses until further notice.

DAILY MASSES AND CONFESSIONS ARE CANCELLED THRU AUGUST 14TH.

Weekend Masses will be celebrated at their usual hours and we will still hear confessions on

Saturday morning — 9:00am-10:00am and Saturday afternoons — 3:00pm-3:40pm

during this time.

PRE 2020-2021 Covid-19 will have an affect on our PRE classes this fall. We are still trying to decide how to have classes while ensuring the safety of our children and catechists. This will mean necessary changes to the program which we will reveal over the next few months. We will begin registration in July. However, we will call each family we have in the system. We will begin in early July calling families who have students entering into second year sacramental preparation to register them for classes.

FIRST COMMUNION AND CONFIRMATION MASSES previously scheduled for April and May have been rescheduled during the months of September thru November. If you still do not know the scheduled date for your child, you need to call the office. 479-756-6711.

Being Game Ready I hope everybody had a wonderful Fourth of July Weekend! A fun fact about me is that I love to watch American football. I never missed watching the University of Notre Dame football game, and with my sister in the Razorback marching band, I cheer for the Hogs as well. Even playing sports growing up, I loved the competition! On Fridays in high school, game day is a special day. Thoughts and feelings rush through your mind

as you wait for the game to arrive. The songs played by the band, the smell of popcorn in the air, the sounds of people moving around, anxiously awaiting for what your team will give the crowd—every player and coach work for one thing: game day. Game day is about preparation mentally and physically for the battle ahead. In this past Wednesday’s Gospel (7-8-2020), Our Lord and Savior is no stranger to being game-ready. Jesus assembles “His team.” These disciples come from different communities, some are related, and some do not even get along. Yet, Jesus calls them to serve. After naming them, He immediately sends them forth. Christ tells them not to go into pagan territory or a Samaritan town. Instead, he instructs them to go to the “lost sheep” of the house of Israel. In every town, they are to proclaim that: “The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.” At times, we see the disciples struggle in understanding their gifts and their purpose as a team. Yet, like a great coach, Jesus pulls the disciples to recognize who they are and empowers them to serve the Father. The Gospel message is the same for us today. Jesus calls us to be game-ready. Each of us can serve and minister. We can help heal someone’s spirit or their belief in themselves. Each of us can gift another person with our care, love, and attention. All of these gifts are healing gifts! We also are called to receive the gifts of healing. The Lord calls all of us to be a part of His team. Do you see that? In sports, we prepare to near perfection as Game Day draws near. Let us treat every day as Gameday for Christ. Just as He battled and won over sin and death, He desires for us to do the same with His help! He wants to be on your sideline today. Will you let Him? Game day is here; Gameday is now! The kickoff is upon you. Are you ready?

While we are not able to all come together each week for Mass, we ask that you still try to maintain your weekly donation to the church. We know that we are living through some difficult times, but we do appreciate your generosity.

If you aren't attending Mass, you can still place your weekly donation in the brass mail slot just outside the front entrance at circle drive.
