GatheringPreparation for Worship John Philip Newell, Former Warden of Iona

On my final evening in the city, as I walked along a simple unlit path leading back to my accommodations, I stumbled over an object on the pathway. It was dark, and I could not see clearly. But when I looked more closely, I saw that it was not just an object on the pathway. It was a little old woman. She was curled up for the night, covered in little more than sackcloth. Something shameful in me did not want to touch the horrendous wrong of that woman having to sleep on a pathway. Something in me knew if I allowed myself to be touched by the disgraceful injustice of her and countless others in the world having to sleep rough every night, I would never be the same.

Voluntary Slow Air Herbert Howells

Call to Worship Shout out, do not hold back! Lift up your voice like a trumpet!Day after day we seek God, as if we are a nation that practices righteousness. What is the path that God chooses for us? To loose the bonds of injustice, to share our food with the hungry, to bring the homeless poor into our homes? If we remove the yoke from among us, the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil, if we satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then our light shall rise in the darkness.God guides and challenges us continually. Let us worship God!

Introit Alleluia Taize

§ Prayer of Confession Most holy and merciful Father, we confess to you and one another that we have sinned against

you by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart, mind and strength. In the busyness of our lives, we often fail to heed the words of Jesus concerning our neighbor: to feed the hungry and provide shelter for the homeless, to clothe the poor, to comfort the sick and visit the imprisoned, to fight injustice and to welcome strangers.

Forgive us of our sins and guide us to use our time, talents and treasures to help others and in doing so showing our gratitude for the gift you have given us in Your Son, Jesus.

§ Assurance of PardonFriends, believe the good news of the Gospel! In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!

§ The Gloria PatriGlory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

§ Passing the Peace Greet those around you with, “The peace of Christ be with you.”

The f lowers are given to the glory of God.The Worship of God8:30 and 11:00 a.m. Words in bold are spoken by the congregation.§ Invites all who are able to stand.

Sing to him that rideth upon the heavens which are of old, Lo, he uttereth his voice, and that a mighty voice. Ascribe ye strength unto God,

His excellency is over Israel, and his strength is in the skies.

The Sermon To Loose the Bonds of Injustice Rev. McDermott

Responding

§ Affirmation of Faith In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of

God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve.

We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel.

We trust in God, whom Jesus called Abba, Father. In sovereign love God created the world good and makes everyone equally in God’s image male and female, of every race and people, to live as one community. Amen.

§ The Doxology Lasst uns ErfreuenPraise God from whom all blessings flow; praise Him, all creatures here below; Alleluia!Praise Him above ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia!

Pastoral Prayer and The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Comments for Contemplation

To Loose the Bonds of Injustice Isaiah 58:1– 11, Matthew 25:31– 46

1. What excited me then and excites me today is to have seen and to know that the gospel of Jesus Christ makes a world of difference in the people and places where severe _____________ and hopelessness dwell.

2. “We are asleep to God’s heart for the poor and oppressed, absorbed with our own inner life, wrestling with our own dreams and traumas that, for all their vividness, are unknown, unseen and largely _____________ to the world around us.” [Mark Labberton]

3. And if you are not careful (and I would urge you not to be careful) this God will wake you up, and shape you and mold you and reorder your life in a way that you could never imagine, a way that can bring about _____________ and mercy and compassion and love in our world.

4. “You see, somehow the God we name, the music we sing, the prayers we offer, and the Scripture we hear read and preached has to call us deeper into God’s _____________ and deeper into the world for which Christ died.” [Mark Labberton]

5. It was his conversion to Christ that gave him the courage and faith to see it through. And hundreds of thousands of people who lived under slavery can praise God for William Wilberforce, as well as those of us who have _____________ from his pioneering work.

6. You see, genuine Christian discipleship is about both believing in the Lord Jesus and following the Lord Jesus. It is about sharing God’s good news in word and in deed. It is about both having a relationship with Jesus and loosing the bonds of injustice wherever injustice exists. Both are needed for it to be done _____________.

FPCA BAZAARNIVAL – JULY 30THOK, I know you’re wanting to surprise me and call me in the last week to pick up those cycling machines, old bikes, treadmills and piano’s and organs you haven’t played in 20 years. Now, I’m going to tell you how to move your marriage into a state of bliss. Remember the times (last night and most every night), when you’ve got your current TV going full blast and your hearing aid turned up, and your wife is hollering to turn it down because she can’t hear the 50th rerun of Love Story or Dancing with the Stars. It’s time to have your man cave or woman’s nest. Replace those 6 year old TV’s with one of those new-fangled 55”- 60” flat screens. Now you can see the TV without squinting, GLORY. Now you can wear your new earphones and turn off the speakers and there is blessed tranquility in the household and your marriage is saved.Go ahead and get off your couch and call us to come get it and that old marriage busting TV. We’ll even go by and pick up that new LAZ-BOY you bought.Call Bob-a-Lew for pick ups (Lew 817-233-8172 or Bob 214-415-5396 - he’s back on the 12th from motoring in the south of France).PS: Start saving those plastic bags and hangers, we need them for Bazaarnival.
