Prayer for the Nation on the Fourth of July
“Almighty God, who has given us this good land for our heritage: We humbly beseech you that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of your favor and glad to
do your will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way.
Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom your Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to your law, we may show forth your praise among the nations of the earth.
In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness and in the day of trouble, do not allow our trust in you to fall; all this we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord.” AMEN!
~~George Washington
WELCOME
I would like to welcome Emma Lawson to our parish staff as our new Coordinator of Youth Ministry. We pray that God’s blessing be upon her in her ministry. Below are a few words from Emma.
My name is Emma Lawson and I have lived in Ephrata, PA my whole l i fe. I graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School in
2014. I then went to Franciscan University of Steubenville where I double majored in Theology and Catechetics with a concentration in Youth Ministry. I graduated from Franciscan in May of 2018 and happily became the Coordinator of Youth Ministry here at St. John Neumann soon after. I love doing relational ministry with teens, going on adventures, playing guitar, and spending time in front of our Eucharistic Lord. I am excited to meet all of you and to be apart of this parish family!
This week’s “Pick of the Week” is
“ O d e T o S a i n t C e c e l i a ” b y
Augustine Institute Radio Theatre.
Tells the dramatic story of a
modest young woman from Rome whose life has
transcended time to influence poets, composers, sculptors,
and painters.

HAPPY July 4th Many in our community are longing for another kind of Independence
Day - independence from poverty. Often that’s needed is some financial
assistance to get beyond their present situation. The St. John Neumann
Conference can be the source of that assistance, but we cannot do it with
out your financial support.
If you wish to help our less fortunate sisters and brothers gain their
independence from poverty, you may either mail or bring your
Independence Day gift to the parish office. Do not put them in the
Sunday collection basket.
Make checks payable to the “St. John Neumann Conference – SVdP.”
Mark your envelope “For St. John Neumann Conference – SVdP”

Mercy of God, Rest in Peace.”
THIRTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
Sick and Shut Ins:
Please notify the Parish Office, 569 -8531, if you have a
loved one from the parish who is in need of our prayers
and would like their name placed in the bulletin. Also,
call if you desire weekly or monthly Communion brought to you in
your home or if you know of someone who does.
IN YOUR PRAYERS REMEMBER THE SICK OF OUR PARISH ESPECIALLY-
Finnegan Ague, Andy Boyle, Sara Delgiorno, Ryder Getchis,
Frances Graham, Flo Howard, Norm Koltunovich, Maria
Stofflet, William Theros, Ruth Tormas, John Wood, Sr.
Chronic/Long-term illness: Ginnie Bauer, Ann Chant,
Claudia Dommel, Jim Eckenroth, Ed Erb, Ann Fedock, Vivian
Garrett, George Hansalik, Nancy Kurtz, Janet Kennedy, Pam
McDonald, Jimena Reyes-Ruiz, John Scheuerman, Jr., Pat Tomlinson
and all those in the Prayer Circle/Chain.
Hospital Admissions: Please notify the
Church Office if you or your loved one is
admitted to the hospital. We have missed
visiting several of our parishioners because
we were not notified by the hospital’s
Pastoral Staff office that they were admitted. It is important
for you to tell the staff on your floor that you want your
parish notified about your admission. This will enable our
parish nurse/pastoral staff to contact you. You will also be
able to get Holy Communion regularly while you are in the
hospital if the Pastoral Office has you on their list.
Suicide – A Subject We Must Talk About
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. It is the 2nd
leading cause of death for 15 to 34-year olds in the U.S. 44,000
Americans die by suicide each year. There is one death by suicide
for every 25 attempts. Suicide rates are the highest among adults
between 45 and 64 at 19.6%. The 2nd highest rate is 19.4% among
those 85 years or older. Males take their own lives at nearly 4x’s
the rate of females and represent 77.9% of all suicides. People who
have a dependency on alcohol or drugs in addition to being
depressed are at a greater risk of suicide.
It is important to state here that no suicide attempt should be
treated lightly or dismissed. A suicide attempt is a clear
indication that there is something gravely wrong in this person’s
life. Suicide is a medical problem that is almost always associated
with several common and treatable mental illnesses, like
depression, anxiety, impulsive behavior, and substance abuse
disorder. 30% to 70% of suicide victims suffer from major
depression or bipolar (manic depressive disorder).
What are some of the warning signs of someone considering
suicide. These signs do not necessarily mean the person is
considering suicide, but several of these symptoms may signal
concern and a need for help.
Expressions of hopelessness and helplessness
Daring and risk-taking behavior
Personality changes
Verbal suicide threats- “You would be better off without me.”
Or “Maybe I won’t be around”
Depression
Giving away prized possessions
Lack of interest in future plans.
Suicide has been kept in the dark and has been neglected for so
long because there is a stigma about it. It has been seen wrongly
as a character flaw or even sinful act. It has been viewed as
something shameful that must be hidden. Next week I will
discuss what to do if you think someone is considering suicide.

Why Do Catholics… Wear medals
and crucifixes? It’s pretty much
“normal” to see Catholics wearing
crucifixes and medals on chains,
and sometimes even a Scapular
(made of brown cloth) – what is
going on here? Are these amulets or good luck charms?
The reason Catholics wear these things is closer to the
reason why an individual might wear a locket with a
picture of a loved one in it – as a remembrance – but when
these objects are blessed they become sacramentals for us,
meaning they act as channels of God’s grace. God’s grace
is not magic, it requires our participation to benefit us.
Wearing a crucifix, a miraculous medal, or the Scapular
acts as a reminder for us to ask God for His help in our
lives. These blessed objects give us actual grace, the
working help of God, and have a relationship with the
seven Sacraments, which give us sanctifying grace, the very
life of God that makes us holy. Crucifixes, medals,
Rosaries, and Scapulars sometimes break, and because
they are holy objects they should be fixed if possible, or
disposed of properly.
