BFA apologizes for any errors or unintended omissions. Please contact BFA if your name is misprinted or omitted. Dear Friends, We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for another outstanding year here at BFA. Your generous support in 2015 has allowed us to make great strides in fighting the African book famine. We are pleased to share with you some of what we achieved in 2015: We shipped books by the ton (yet again): BFA continues as the world’s largest shipper of donated books to Africa, shipping over 34 million books to 49 African countries in our 27-year history. This has garnered us another “exceptional” 4-star rating from Charity Navigator (which named BFA the top U.S. charity under the Humanitarian Aid Category), and a Gold rating on the GuideStar Exchange. In 2015 alone, we shipped 2.4 million books, 665 computers and 200 e-readers valued at over $33 million to 21 countries. More than $2.3 million was raised in 2015 to ship these materials to Africa; We increased our capacity: BFA is growing! In addition to shipping well over two million books annually, we are securing new donors and partners every day from across the world. We hosted some 13,000 volunteers who helped pack books (we are one of the top volunteer sites in Atlanta, GA). Our booksforafrica.org website hosts over 10,000 visits monthly, and we have over 8,000 Facebook likes. To accommodate the ever-growing demand for books, we have relocated both our Atlanta Warehouse (more than doubling our capacity) and our Minnesota Administrative Offices. This increased capacity will allow for the delivery of more high-quality books to African schools and libraries than ever before, helping make literacy a reality for the more than half a billion children growing up in the shadow of the African book famine; We made the right connections: We interacted with numerous members of the African diplomatic corps in 2015 to collaborate on activities. Her Excellency Liberata Mulamula, Ambassador of the Republic of Tanzania to the U.S., hosted BFA’s Summit Society for a reception at the Tanzanian Embassy in Washington, D.C. In May, the Ugandan Ambassador to the U.S., H.E. Oliver Wonekha, delivered a captivating keynote speech at our annual fundraising event. Our warehouses hosted visits from Ambassadors from Kenya, Liberia, and South Africa. Finally, H.E. Mohamed Tawfik, Egyptian Ambassador to the U.S., visited Minnesota for a special presentation on the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the world renowned library in Alexandria, Egypt; We made (even more of) the right connections!: In addition to cultivating relationships with Ambassadors, we were honored to host 25 young African leaders from President Obama’s Mandela Washington Fellowship program, who attended our annual Kilimanjaro Society Reception. In addition, we held a special warehouse event in Atlanta in honor of Nigerian Philanthropist Sir Emeka Offor to celebrate the shipment of 16 containers of books and computers to Nigeria! This trip also led to an impromptu meeting with President Jimmy Carter, who was in Atlanta to honor Sir Emeka’s work to end River Blindness; We discussed the impact of books: A May 2015 World Bank report emphasized the urgent need to get textbooks into the hands of every student in sub-Saharan Africa. This report is part of a growing body of evidence reinforcing the efficiency of putting the right books in the hands of African learners. The report states that, “No other input is likely to be more cost effective than making high- quality learning materials available to all students…” Other studies have reached similar conclusions to the 2015 World Bank report, and we are encouraged and energized by these findings. In an increasingly global world, it is essential that the current generation of African children receive a world-class education, and delivering books to students is a tried and true method to move this vision towards reality. We joined the conversation with a piece entitled “Books Have the Power to Transform Lives,” printed in The Guardian newspaper in London, and a BFA presentation at the famous library in Alexandria, Egypt, as part of the 4th annual International Summit of the Book conference. In 2015 we strove to take things to a new level in order to end the book famine in Africa. Thanks to your support, the children of Africa will be able to pursue their dreams and lead their continent. This was the dream of Nelson Mandela, who stated, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” It is our dream — and we know it is yours as well. Sincerely, Rosemond Sarpong Owens Patrick J. Plonski, PhD President Executive Director Individuals Combined Federal Campaign 10718 NONPROFIT ORG U.S. POSTAGE PAID TWIN CITIES, MN PERMIT NO. 4593

Due to limits on space in this report, we were unable to list all cash and book donors. BFA apologizes for any errors or unintended omissions. Please contact BFA if your name is misprinted or omitted.

Dear Friends,

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for another outstanding year here at BFA. Your generous support in 2015 has allowed us to make great strides in fighting the African book famine. We are pleased to share with you some of what we achieved in 2015:

• We shipped books by the ton (yet again): BFA continues as the world ’s largest shipper of donated books to Africa, shipping over 34 million books to 49 African countries in our 27-year history. This has garnered us another “exceptional” 4-star rating from Charity Navigator (which named BFA the top U.S. charity under the Humanitarian Aid Category), and a Gold rating on the GuideStar Exchange. In 2015 alone, we shipped 2.4 million books, 665 computers and 200 e-readers valued at over $33 million to 21 countries. More than $2.3 million was raised in 2015 to ship these materials to Africa;

• We increased our capacity: BFA is growing! In addition to shipping well over two million books annually, we are securing new donors and partners every day from across the world. We hosted some 13,000 volunteers who helped pack books (we are one of the top volunteer sites in Atlanta, GA). Our booksforafrica.org website hosts over 10,000 visits monthly, and we have over 8,000 Facebook likes. To accommodate the ever-growing demand for books, we have relocated both our Atlanta Warehouse (more than doubling our capacity) and our Minnesota Administrative Offices. This increased capacity will allow for the delivery of more high-quality books to African schools and libraries than ever before, helping make literacy a reality for the more than half a billion children growing up in the shadow of the African book famine;

• We made the right connections: We interacted with numerous members of the African diplomatic corps in 2015 to collaborate on activities. Her Excellency Liberata Mulamula, Ambassador of the Republic of Tanzania to the U.S., hosted BFA’s Summit Society for a reception at the Tanzanian Embassy in Washington, D.C. In May, the Ugandan Ambassador to the U.S., H.E. Oliver Wonekha, delivered a captivating keynote speech at our annual fundraising event. Our warehouses hosted visits from Ambassadors from Kenya, Liberia, and South Africa. Finally, H.E. Mohamed Tawfik, Egyptian Ambassador to the U.S., visited Minnesota for a special presentation on the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the world renowned library in Alexandria, Egypt;

• We made (even more of) the right connections!: In addition to cultivating relationships with Ambassadors, we were honored to host 25 young African leaders from President Obama’s Mandela Washington Fellowship program, who attended our annual Kilimanjaro Society Reception. In addition, we held a special warehouse event in Atlanta in honor of Nigerian Philanthropist Sir Emeka Offor to celebrate the shipment of 16 containers of books and computers to Nigeria! This trip also led to an impromptu meeting with President Jimmy Carter, who was in Atlanta to honor Sir Emeka’s work to end River Blindness;

• We discussed the impact of books: A May 2015 World Bank report emphasized the urgent need to get textbooks into the hands of every student in sub-Saharan Africa. This report is part of a growing body of evidence reinforcing the efficiency of putting the right books in the hands of African learners. The report states that, “No other input is likely to be more cost effective than making high-quality learning materials available to all students…” Other studies have reached similar conclusions to the 2015 World Bank report, and we are encouraged and energized by these findings.

Sincerely,

Rosemond Sarpong Owens Patrick J. Plonski, PhDPresident Executive Director
