thWith counterfeit cartridges being recovered in Bangalore on June 11 and

thMumbai on 27 May, HP seems to have gone into an overdrive against

counterfeiting.

This is definitely good for the remanufacturing industry with the logic being that

if customer is getting buying an Original and is not sure of what he is getting, he

is better off buying a Remanufactured cartridge, where at least he is sure of what

he is buying.

The Counterfeit hurts every one:

lManufacturers lose revenue and more importantly the name.

lResellers lose stock (money) and get entangled in legal hassles

lRemanufacturers have to fight seemingly lower OEM prices and

sometimes fall under suspicions.

lGovernments lose taxes which are not paid.

lMost of All customers lose because they do not get what they pay for

So I think the remanufacturing industry should definitely join the OEM's in

their fight against counterfeits.

Montreal, Quebec (Canada)- Densigraphix, announced the release of

PearlTONE compatible color refill toners for remanufacturers of HP

Color LaserJet CP1215 laser printer cartridges.

Dana J. Valley, Vice-President of Sales commented: “We now offer the

complete solution for laser remanufacturers for this machine since we

also carry the reset chips, drum as well as the premium seal for the toner

cartridge. The drum is the same for all Color LaserJet models including

the CP1515, CM1312, CP1215, CP1312, and CP1518 models. The

compatible laser refill toner, chips drums, and the premium seal for use

in HP LaserJet CP1215 are in stock and ready to ship.”

HP Color LaserJet CP1215 laser printer/MFP is recommended for small

to medium businesses and home users, replacing the LaserJet 1600 with

faster print speed and a smaller footprint. The CP1215 was introduced in

mid 2008 (in the CM version) and is still in production. The CM version

includes Print/Scan/Copier; no other options are available and hook-up

is through USB so plug & play is simple.

Mitch Schwartz, Director R&D and Quality Assurance states, “Like all

Densigraphix products, each compatible toner is meticulously analyzed

and tested, which ensures that every Densigraphix product meets or

exceeds the OEM equivalent density, yield and consistency from batch to

batch.”

for use in Kyocera Mita FS 2000/3900/4000-series Printers

Katun expands industry-leading line with introduction of

three new toner cartridges for use in this Kyocera Mita printer series.

Minneapolis -- Katun Corporation, the world's leading alternative

supplier to the office equipment industry, is proud to introduce three

Katun Performance toners for use in Kyocera Mita FS 2000/3900/4000-

series printers. Katun customers now have high-quality alternatives to

high-cost OEM supplies for these three popular mid-to-high volume

Kyocera Mita printers. With this greatly expanded product offering,

dealers and distributors can now enjoy triple the revenue and profit

opportunities.

Some manufacturers validate their

product's quality by testing it in

“normal” environments for

temperature and humidity and for

standard page coverage. Katun

understands that few end-users

consistently operate in “normal”

and “standard” conditions, which are why Katun takes the extra steps to

validate performance in higher temperature / humidity and lower

temperature / humidity environments as well. Plus, Katun stresses the

machine's system by utilizing high page coverage prints (greater than

20%) during the testing process. Because Katun validates performance in

normal and extreme conditions, customers can be confident that these

Katun Performance toners will meet their needs regardless of their local

environment and usage conditions.

“In today's economic environment, most every business, whether large or

small is looking for cost savings and ways to stay ahead of their

competition,” says Joseph C. Wagner, Katun's vice president of

marketing. “These three new Katun Performance toners offer you just

that - significant savings versus OEM supplies, with no compromises on

quality.”

As with all Katun products, this Katun Performance toner for use in

Kyocera Mita FS 2000/3900/4000-series printers may be ordered via the

Katun Online Catalogue Katun's one-stop Internet resource that allows

registered customers to locate and order thousands of Katun products

while accessing real-time information about their orders and accounts.

Customers can access the Katun Online Catalogue at www.katun.com.

The introduction of these Katun color toners expands a large and

growing selection of Katun imaging supplies for use in Canon

applications.

Minneapolis- Katun Corporation, the world's leading alternative

Business Color toner for use in Canon iR C2880/C3380-series digital

copier/printers. Building off the success of Katun Business Color toners

imaging supplies for use in Canon applications. This toner set, which

provides OEM-equivalent yields, copy/print quality, fusing performance

and full compatibility, is ideal for business color environments, and

provides the true cost savings that dealers need without the risk of poor

performance or end-user dissatisfaction.

“Color reproduction in business color applications varies, even from

machine to machine within an OEM family using all OEM supplies,”

says Bob Moore, vice president of product development. “Consistent

with the reality of this environment, this Katun color toner set was

developed to meet business color end-user expectations, where precise

color matching is not a prerequisite. These Katun toners like all Katun

savings, their strong yields, consistent performance and reliability ensure

that customers' true cost savings remain high with every toner purchase.

True costs the toner purchase price plus any additional costs users could

incur due to lower-than-expected-yields, poor performance and/or

unexpected and costly service calls may be much higher when customers

purchase other (non-Katun) aftermarket toners.

Eco Service's Work Extend Into Charitable Areas

Wroclaw, Poland- Eco Service, an empty cartridge broker operating

worldwide, focuses not only on empty cartridge trading on global

markets but is also involved in pro-ecological and charity drives.

Eco Service is one of the biggest European empty cartridge trading

companies. Outside Europe, it also operates on other world markets.

In Poland, it is known for its pro-ecological and charity activity. One of its

key initiatives the ”You help children by giving away” drive was

undertaken by Eco Service with UNICEF. The program targets Polish

companies and institutions that can give away their empty toner and ink

cartridges using special containers provided free by Eco Service. For

every unit given away Eco Service transfers money to UNICEF, which is

mainly used to support the projects carried out by the organization in

Africa. These include inoculations, HIV/AIDS prophylactic treatment

or building and equipping schools. For the funds donated by Eco Service

per each cartridge one may purchase five life-saving vaccines against polio

or 50 tablets that make it possible to decontaminate water. It is also

possible to make a gift of an educational set containing pencils and

exercise books to five children.

”With minimum effort everyone can help the needy and protect the

environment at the same time,” said Marcin Adamski, Eco Service CEO.

So far almost 1,000 companies and institutions have joined the drive.

”We are continually attracting new partners. Together we can do

something good,” Adamski said.

It's not the only drive run by Eco Service in Poland. The company is also

undertaking the project called ”Let's plant trees for cartridges” involving

support of the tree-planting initiative in the Polish mountains. The

project has been operational for a few years and several thousand trees

have been planted thanks to it.

Strategy Development, BTA Launch Business Workshop

Bryn Mawr, Pa- Dealers are seeking strategies to grow revenue and profits

in the face of year-over-year industry unit placement declines, a shift from

A3 to A4 products, a difficult financing environment and new

competition for pages from other channels selling print management

solutions.

Although there are many training programs that address different aspects

of planning or focus on improving results in functional areas, there is no

single program that comprehensively brings together all functional areas

into a cohesive plan of action until now. The BTA Business Planning

Workshop is a 2.5 day program developed and instructed by the

consultants from Strategy Development. Attendees will learn through a

combination of instruction, case studies and class discussion how to

build and execute a business plan that becomes a roadmap to achieving

business goals.

A snapshot of some of the content from this workshop:

How to use your financial statements to make good business decisions;

using the Strategy Development Balanced Scorecard to maximize result;

conducting SWOT analysis and using the data to grow; using industry

trends to plan for a profitable future; launching new initiatives; driving

productivity: A key to high profits; engineering processes to improve

workflow and employee satisfaction, and cash management.

We have been able to help scores of dealers across North America launch

print management initiatives, improve their equipment sales

effectiveness and improve back office and service operations, said Tom

Callinan, managing principal of Strategy Development. But short of a

consulting engagement with our team, until the launch of the BTA

Business Planning Workshop there has been no single program available

that allowed the dealer to get a holistic view of growing their business and

profits.

Our members have benefited greatly from the expertise of the Strategy

Development team and we are looking forward to enhancing our

training curriculum with this comprehensive workshop, added Brent

Hoskins, BTA executive director. Business planning is one of the most

requested educational areas from our members, so we are happy that we

can now provide that education.

The inaugural BTA Business Planning Workshop will be held October 6-

8.

Cover Story

Allen Westerfield was a long-time employee at Lexmark. He's now the

president of the Imaging Supplies Coalition (ISC), which includes nine

OEM companies.

Westerfield knows something of competing with remanufacturers. But

as the head of a group that largely battles the ongoing problem of

counterfeit goods, he can see common ground with the aftermarket.

“While we have been and will continue to be competitors in the market

place, this is an area where we can work together to defeat a common and

harmful enemy,” Westerfield said.

The ISC estimates the loss, due to counterfeiting, for the imaging

supplies industry could be as much as $3.5 billion.

“We are aware of the danger of counterfeiting, both of the products we

buy and of people counterfeiting our name, trademark and products,”

said Phil Faroudja, president and founder of Faroudja Toner in San

Carlos, Calif.

“We did have one experience where we found that there was an Asian

company that had been selling counterfeit Faroudja Toner products,

complete with fake Faroudja labels on bottles and drums. They were not

one of our authorized distributors, but we were quickly able to get them

to stop.”

Companies like Samsung Electronics America and Hewlett-Packard have

tackled the problem of counterfeiting especially aggressively in the last

year. Both are members of the ISC, with HP joining recently.

In March, Samsung announced it had made 13 seizures, rounded up

more than 30,000 counterfeit cartridges and components in the United

States, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil, with an estimated retail value of more

than $3 million.

“While we are not at liberty to state how many (people) we have focused

on this effort, we can say that we have individual teams devoted to this

ongoing investigative work in each major global market area, including

the U.S., Europe and Asia,” said John McIntyre, sustainability manager

for Samsung Electronics America.

HP revealed in April it had seized more than 700,000 cartridges in the

Middle East last year. Recently, the company said it has found more than

115,000 fake inkjet cartridges in Bahrain, Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

HP plans to change its packaging and introduce new security features

every 12 to 18 months to combat counterfeiters.

“Most companies in the aftermarket sell both OEM genuine and non-

OEM aftermarket cartridges,” McIntyre said. “They source these OEM

cartridges through various channels. They could be the victim of a

counterfeiter and unknowingly be selling counterfeit goods to one of

Combating CounterfeitsBy Dan Mooney Recharger Magazine.•

their customers. This could result in customer satisfaction issues or

hardware damage they could be liable for. Neither the aftermarket nor

the OEM consumable manufacturer win when counterfeiters succeed.”

Dimitris Constantinou is CEO of 123 Refills Inc., based in Irwindale,

Calif. He said, “We buy from reputable and well-known manufacturers

most of whom we visit and have a close understanding of their

manufacturing process, so there is a level of trust that is instilled in the

manufacturer.” “Although I have not encountered any counterfeit

product, I would assume that a counterfeiter would sell their product

close to the OEM price in order to maximize their profits. I would not see

this as a significant threat to the aftermarket because I believe that the

customer who buys OEMs is a different type of customer to the customer

who buys aftermarket product, and a small change in OEM pricing

would not shift their behavior from aftermarket to OEM.”

The ISC works closely with the International Imaging Technology

Council. The I-ITC represents about 2,500 remanufacturers, the bulk of

which are in North America.

I-ITC Executive Director Tricia Judge said the I-ITC has over the years

turned over information on about 12 companies all from outside the

U.S. to the ISC that were suspected of producing counterfeit goods.

“Since the counterfeit product is remanufactured, in the minds of some

consumers counterfeit and remanufactured is synonymous,” Judge said.

“The aftermarket gets injured as much as the OEMs do by counterfeiting.

That's why we partnered up with the Imaging Supplies Coalition.”

McIntyre said Samsung's investigations have turned up toner cartridges,

components such as drums, wiper blades, toner, fake security labels, fake

barcode serial labels and replica boxes.

“This program was started to protect our resellers and end users from

counterfeit toner that can harm their hardware investment or provide

less than Samsung-quality output,” McIntyre said.

Scott MacKenzie is the manager of market analysis for West Point

Products and a recognized industry speaker and contributing editor to a

number of trade publications. He said he has seen counterfeit product

frequently, although less so in recent years.

Activity has subsided a little in the last couple of years, but (at various past

events) there was a sizable contingency of manufacturers with

remanufactured product on their tabletops, and counterfeit underneath

for anyone that wanted to see it. Even the packaging was exactly like the

OEMs at the time. Hence the added holograms and other identifiers

now on OEM packaging.

Going green is good. But saving green, especially in a down economy,

apparently is even better.

Last fall, SoyPrint cartridges entered the market. Traction for the laser

cartridges, which use toner derived from soy oil, has been steady.

"Until the price comes down, it won't be competitive against

remanufactured cartridges," said Sarah Caniglia.

Caniglia represents the Cistercian monks of Our Lady of Spring Bank in

Sparta, Wisc. and its Web site LaserMonksGreen. The monks, who sell

OEM and remanufactured cartridges as well as the SoyPrint brand,

donate proceeds to charity. According to Caniglia, the monks were

selling "about several

h u n d r e d S o y P r i n t

cartridges" a month as of

May.

" T h e y a r e p r i c e d

competitively against HP

cartridges, but not against

reman cartridges yet,"

Caniglia said.

On its Web site, the monks

listed an HP Q7553X black

cartridge for $164.99. The

monks were selling the

same remanufactured

SoyPrint cartridge for

$141.95. On the Internet,

tha t remanufac tured

cartridge could be found as low as $30. One large remanufacturer was

selling that cartridge for approximately $125.

PRC Technologies of Standish, Maine, is providing the cartridges. PRC

announced last summer that they would offer "the first laser printer

cartridges using toner powder derived from soybeans."

According to Battelle, one of the world's leading non-profit research and

development organizations, more than 200,000 tons of petroleum-

derived electrostatic dry toners and resins are used annually in the U.S.

to make three trillion copies.

Rick Greenlaw, vice president of marketing for PRC, said the SoyPrint

cartridges are being remanufactured in the U.S., but wouldn't say who is

building them. "During 2009, we will produce several thousand per

month," Greenlaw said. "Sales are growing at the rate of 35 percent per

month."

PRC is currently marketing only black SoyPrint cartridges for some HP

printers and Canon fax machines. Greenlaw said PRC is exploring

branching off into other brands this year. Color cartridges being

developed for the SoyPrint label are not in PRC's immediate plans.

A spokesperson for a large remanufacturer, who asked that the company

not be named, said tests showed soy-based toner "didn't meet our

standards or the OEM standards" for print quality.

PRC claims it found,

through months of testing,

that print quality and page

yield matched HP versions.

Greenlaw said, in some

cases, print yield has been

higher using the SoyPrint

cartridges.

"The qua l i t y o f the

c a r t r i d g e s i s g o o d , "

Caniglia said.

HP, in a statement, listed

various reasons why it

hasn't jumped into the soy

cartridge business.

"HP always remains open to

and continually explores the use of innovative materials as part of HP's

company-wide Design for Environment program, which reduces the

environmental impact of HP products through material usage, ease of

recycling and packaging efficiency," HP said in the statement.

"HP environmental product stewards have considered and tested bio-

based materials for a wide range of uses. However, incorporating bio-

based materials on a grand scale requires significant considerations, and

to date HP has not found their use to be environmentally preferable. In

addition, some bio-based materials have not met HP's high-performance

standards and may not be appropriate for many printing applications."

Canon captures 30% share in Eastern Market

Canon has announced the Eastern market to have registered the highest

growth in most product categories in the first 5 months of 2009 over the

same period last year. Canon also announced that it has become a

leading player in East in the digital camera and digital copier

multifunctional categories with 30% market share in both.

The announcement also included Canon's achievement of 30% market

share for laser printer nationally during April 2009. Ace cricketer and

Canon's brand ambassador Sachin Tendulkar visited Kolkata to be a part

of “Thrill of Thirty”- an event to celebrate the landmark. The event was

followed by a channel partner meet to share the success with Canon

partners and acknowledge their unparalleled efforts.

This announcement is a milestone since all the three divisions of Canon

India have grown substantially in East. In the Printer Products Division,

East has the highest contribution to the consumables business which is

the engine of growth for this business. 32% of consumables revenue for

Canon India is generated from the Eastern region. In the camera

products division also 38% of the supply business comes from East. In

the copier segment, consumables business grew 34% which is the highest

in the country.

East India which includes cities like Kolkata, Bhubaneshwar, Guwahati,

Patna, Ranchi and others generated revenue of Rs1.1bn across all

business in 2008. This is higher than the company's total growth plan of

25% to reach the turnover of Rs. 8.4bn establishing East as the growth

engine for Canon. Canon is looking at revenues of Rs1.5bn in 2009 from

East which is a growth of over 30%.

Kensaku Konishi, President & CEO, Canon India remarked saying, “At

Canon we always aim at providing products with innovative technologies

making the products user friendly. We are thrilled to announce that all

our three product divisions have grown higher than the industry in East

and have generated highest market share from the Eastern market. At the

same time we aim to further increase penetration and sustain

momentum in these markets. These markets continue to be crucial to

our overall growth and we plan to expand further to reach out to our end

users.”

Aiding the robust growth of Canon across key markets even in

challenging times is the digital imaging major's strategy of consistently

coming up with innovative offerings across categories aimed at forging

stronger relationships with consumers as well as partners. With its

Eastern India Market also on a growth curve, the company is rapidly

progressing towards achieving its target revenue of Rs8.4bn in 2009.

Speaking on the occasion, Alok Bharadwaj, Senior Vice President,

Canon India said, “For us at Canon, the East has always been one of our

key markets and now the key revenue generator as well. We have

successfully managed to penetrate the Eastern market to a great extent.

Canon today has a footprint in 300 towns across India out of which 80

towns are situated in the East. 60% of our business in East comes from

outside West Bengal demonstrating high potential of smaller states in

East.”

“Our consistent marketing efforts and channel initiatives coupled with

the high brand loyalty and goodwill from our customers and partners in

the East has helped us reach this milestone figure. We will continue to

invest in these markets to sustain our position and move towards market

leadership in all the areas. We are glad to have Sachin Tendulkar amidst

us to celebrate our success in the East and be a part of “Thrill of Thirty”

he added.

Brand Ambassador Sachin Tendulkar said “I am very happy to share this

milestone with Canon and be a part of the celebration. I wish them all

the best and look forward to many more milestones in East India”.

While all most all printers are very reliable and are very easy to install and

work with, a little bit of care can go a long way to keep them that way.

The best problem is the one that never occurs. Many printer problems are

avoided with a little common sense, such as regular cleaning and

choosing quality printer paper.

Avoid paper jams.

Among the most common problems with any make of printer are paper

jams. A printer will jam for any number of reasons. To avoid paper jams

take care of the following:

Keep your printer clean. Use vacuum cleaner to suck out dust and any

toner spillage from time to time.

Turn the printer off, unplug it and clean the printer with a damp sponge.

You can use water or a light household cleaner.

Use correct type of paper. If the paper is too thick or thin and hand made

paper etc. can cause paper jam. Check you printer manual for the correct

type of paper.

Humidity and static cause paper misfeed. When loading the printer,

always riffle the paper to separate the sheets. Persistent misfeeds, jams

and double-sheeting may indicate that one or more of the feed rollers are

worn. This repair usually requires the attention of a professional.

Always adjust the paper guides properly. They have a tendency to shift. If

the paper guides are not adjusted to suite the paper size, it results in cross

feeding and jams.

Periodically check the rollers on the printer that feed the paper through

its pathway for wear out. While cleaning the printer periodically and

using the correct paper type are easy fixes, roller replacement can be a

difficult job depending on the model of the printer. Get them replaced

from the service centre.

Regardless of the cause, when removing a paper jam, always pull the

paper in the direction of the paper path, because pulling it backwards can

severely damage the printer.

Certain printers are more susceptible to paper jams than others. In my

experience, any printer that holds the paper vertically and then pulls it

down through the printer isn't designed for heavy use, but many

organizations make use of them on individual systems and should be

aware of this flaw. So please check the duty cycle of the printer and

upgrade if necessary. (Most OEM web sites have duty cycles listed on

their websites.

Print a blank page.

Run a clean page through your printer. This will pick up lint, dust, and

stray toner. Open your word processor to a blank page and press the Print

command. If it won't print a blank page, type any character and then

press print.

There are several inkjet and laser cleaning products that claim to remove

dust, dried ink, and paper debris from the feed rollers, toner drum, and

thermal head. Try them out.

Use the Printer Regularly.

If you use your printer regular this will prevent ink drying up and keep

the printer and ink in good condition. Use both Colour and black and

white prints weekly to stop the nozzles on your printer getting clogged up,

or the ink to simply dry up.

Power Supply:

A laser printer should never be plugged into a UPS, because the UPS can

be damaged by the surges of power required by a printer to keep the fuser

assembly warm, unless you have a UPS which can take the load. This can

result in the Printer displaying a 50.4 error message.

Always use the power supply unit provided by the OEM and in case of a

third party replacement power supply unit, ensure the power supply has

the correct power rating. The voltage and the current rating must exactly

match the OEM power supply and not be an approximate match.

Always keep your printer off when not in use. Apart from saving power it

also keeps it safe in case of power surges and spikes.

Replace cartridges when asked.

If the toner is low, simply removing the cartridge and shaking it to

redistribute the toner more evenly can temporarily resolve the problem

until you can replace the cartridge.

In case of inkjet printers, continuing to print from an empty cartridge

can result in circuit burnout in the cartridge head rendering it un-

refillable. Replace cartridge as soon as the warning comes, even if there is

a small amount of residual ink in the cartridge.

In case of laser printers if toner smears or does not stay on the paper

If words and images come off the paper when a hand is run across them,

there are a few possible problems. First, the fuser assembly may be

damaged or at the end of its life. The solution is to replace the fuser

assembly. Repairing a fuser assembly is generally not recommended

because the fuser is considered a consumable printer part and not worth

the time or effort to fix. Second, the toner cartridge may be defective and

letting too much toner out at one time. In a black-and-white laser printer,

the solution is to replace the toner cartridge. In a color laser printer, only

replace the cartridge that is exhibiting the problem. Third, some toner

may have spilled in the printer. If so, you'll need to clean it out.

Color laser printers (CLP) use toner at different rates. Missing colors or

Techanical

unevenly balanced colors on CLP print jobs usually indicates that you

need to replace the corresponding toner cartridge

Take care while installing the cartridge.

Make sure that the plastic protective tape on the new black cartridge is

off. Many printer owners commit this simple mistake possibly due to

absent-mindedness or maybe due to distractions while loading the new

black ink cartridge. Others simply forget to do so.

Same applies to the laser cartridges. Please remove the pull tab seal as

shown in the instruction sheet which comes along with the cartridge or

Printer. Failure to do so can result in cartridge and printer damage.

Calibrate the HP printer. Some people think that they can skip through

this process because they already calibrated the printer after it was

purchased. One thing to remember is that every time there is a need for a

new printer cartridge, calibration is one of the steps to perform right after

loading.

Always use the proper printer driver.

The best is the one which came with your printer. But when you upgrade

the operating system check the OEM web site.

As new operating systems are released, new drivers will need to be loaded

for your existing printers. Not all printers have a driver for every OS. In

these cases, it's best to consult the printer manual and find out what

printers the drivers will emulate. While not all of the functionality of the

printer will be available under this emulation, at least basic printing will

work. For example, most HP printers will print with the HP LaserJet II

driver installed, although specific options, such as duplexing, will not

work

Most printers will automatically update you on software updates from

their manufacturers. If this is not the case, check the Web site regularly

(once a month or so) for software updates.

Keep the printer properly.

Make sure that the printer is kept on an even surface and not resting

crooked.

Keep beverages, cigarette smoke, and messy kids and pets away from the

machine.

Make sure to have enough space all around the printer as the power

supply heats up and requires circulation of air to cool it.

Cover your printer when not in use.

Protect your printer when it's not in use. The easiest printer maintenance

to perform is to simply cover it with a dust cover when it is not being used.

This will protect your printer and make cleaning the printer easier.
