Good even-ing Ladies and Gentlemen, Administration and Teachers, Distinguished Guests and Parents, and last but cer-tainly not least, good

evening to you my fellow graduates of the Class of

2012. My name is Zachary McClean and I would like to begin by thanking everyone who had a part in making me the class valedictorian as this is a huge pleasure and honor, thank you. Today is Thursday, June 28, 2012. To most, this is just a normal day in June. We are one day closer to July and maybe, just maybe, the weather will improve and we can actually get some sun for a change. When I woke up and rolled over in my bed this morning, this is exactly how I felt. Today just felt like just a normal day. However, I soon remembered that today is a monumental day…Grad day. I’ve known this day would come for the last five years, however, it still caught me off guard this morning when I looked at the calen-dar and realized that today I would walk across the stage and complete the first major milestone in my life.

Today we commemorate the fact that it has been 13 years; 13 long years since we first sat by the front door of our houses in nervous anticipa-tion for our Moms to finish tying our shoes and for us to get ready for our first day of kindergart-en. Years passed and eventually it was time for us to step through those big doors into the great-est high school in all of Golden, B.C. We had all just come from either Nicholson Elementary School or Lady Grey Elementary School. Some of us may have even moved to Golden from a different town or city. Despite the fact that we would eventually become the best grad class that GSS will ever have the pleasure of edu-cating, we have a lot to learn. We had no clue what high school was about when we got here in grade 8. For instance, we had no idea that if you got caught writing with pen in Ms. Lowe’s math

class, she would promptly run over to the CD player, turn it on and begin singing “The pen-cil song” to the tune of “I will survive”. We also didn’t know that Ms. Fawcett is the best teach-er…. at making fun of students, countless times the Physics class would crack up with uncontrol-lable laughter after Ms. Fawcett “burned” Daniel Dahlin so hard he almost started to sweat. Final-ly, we didn’t know that M. Desnoyers was such a dedicated fan that he still believes that the Habs will win the Stanley Cup again, but come on let’s be honest, it’s never going to happen.

Regardless of what we didn’t know, each and every one of us soon learned the tricks of being in high school, whether it was learning a better excuse than my dog ate my homework, or wheth-er it was learning how to do an entire assignment of homework in the five minute break before class. The things that we have learned through-out our high school career will have a huge impact on our lives and will form the basis of the skills that we will use every day for the rest of our lives. We have all grown up so much, now when I look out at the people before me I see adults. That’s probably because there are a lot of par-ents here today. But seriously, each of us grads have changed so much, we have grown up and become unique individuals. Just remember that we will never be younger than we are now. Sud-denly, we are looking at what was for so long the distant future: university, work or travel and we are now realizing that these things are not so dis-tant, and that is a terrifying idea. We now have to exit that high school safety net that we were so accustomed to being in. In high school we are allowed to make mistakes, we are allowed to act like children, because we are in an environment that treats us as children. However, we cannot remain in this grade school fantasy. In the real world there are no more teachers peering over your shoulder ensuring that you do well, and there are no more of Mrs. Turner’s re-tests. This is the part of the series where Dumbledore dies and Harry has to kill Voldemort by himself. Of course, not one of us is perfect and as a result we will all make mistakes in our lives. In fact, we will make mistakes quite often, probably every-day, for the rest of our lives. I was once told a quote that reads “Good judgment comes from experience, experience comes from bad judg-

ment.” These mistakes that we make in our life may present challenges but just like the Vancou-ver Canucks we will be able to make it past these road blocks and continue on with life, learning from our mistakes, and one day each of us will win our own Stanley Cup, just like the Canucks will in 2013.

Despite these road blocks ahead of us, we will all be successful in life. Ladies and gentle-men, in front of you are the next doctors, nurs-es, accountants, chefs and every other career imaginable. One of us might even find the cure for cancer, make a manned mission to mars or win the amazing race. Graduates, ahead of you are years and years of the best experiences one can imagine. Despite the good times we had here at high school over the past few years, I want to make sure that you know these should not be the best 12 years of your life. That is not a pain I would wish on the worst of my enemies. If grad transitions and study halls are the best times of your life, I’m sorry my friend, but you have done something wrong. Despite how fun high school was, there will be many better years in our life to come. Today is the start of a new chapter in our

lives. Soon most of us will be leaving Golden. On that day when we have our bags packed and are leaving the house, Moms will be opening their arms and crying, and Dads will be opening their wallets and crying. However, remember this, in the words of Dr. Seuss, “Don’t cry because it’s over, Smile because it happened.” My wish for you is that you leave high school and create so many happy memories during the rest of your life. If the sole purpose of the memories that you have formed to this date was to provide a shelf to hold your new memories, they would fail under the weight, because that is what life is about. Now I realize this is where I want all my memories to come from; dreams that I got to live out and can now reflect on and tell my kids and grandkids about. I’m telling you now dream big, and ful-fill every dream that you make so that way when we meet again in the future, we will have some amazing stories to talk about. This graduation ceremony is not a good bye, this is a ‘See you in 10 years when I am significantly smarter, funnier and more handsome than I am now’. Congratu-lations! I wish you all the best and good luck, not that any one of you should need it.

There is always tremendous excitement that comes with graduation. There is a sense of

accomplishment, a sense of new doors opening, but also a sense of friends heading off into different directions. These are things we think about as we attend gradu-ation ceremonies. The years ahead will offer very exciting opportunities. Past graduates from our schools have gone on to accomplish a great deal in academics, business, sports and the arts.

And this year’s graduates will also have a range of pos-sibilities to pursue. But no accomplishment comes with-

out effort. As you prepare for the life ahead of you, it is important that you remember to think of others. You will find that some of your most satis-fying moments in life will be in helping others. It may be raising a family, through your profession, or through volun-teer community service, but what you do for others can will improve your quality of life.

I hope that you will enjoy your graduation celebrations, and I wish you all the best in the future

All dressed up for one of the most exciting nights of their lives, four Golden Secondary School students had one stop to make before heading to their 2012 prom. For three months, Kailyn Trask, Taylor McKeeman, Zach McClean, Jenness McGrath (unable to attend the pre-prom meeting), and Kirsten Allkins have been volunteering their time at Abbeyfield House.

“It started out as Leadership project (from Leadership class), but that only went for a short time-span. And then we decided that we were having so much fun with it that we continued with it,” said Allkins.

The Grade 12 students have been coming in every Wednesday to spend time with the residents of Abbeyfield.

“Sometimes we play games, we read stories, we planted a pot of flowers. We went on walks one day, so we did a variety of different things with them,” said Allkins.

This is the first year that the high school has done a program like this, and everyone at Abbeyfield was grateful for the gesture.

“These guys look forward to them coming every Wednesday, and they ask them questions about where they’re going and what they’re doing. And the kids have asked them questions about their lives,” said Stephanie Sollows, who works at Abbeyfield.

“It’s been very special. And we’re very lucky and appreciative that they could take time out of their grad to come tonight.”

Kailyn Trask decided to organize the outing when she learned that many of the residents wanted to see them all dressed up.

“Some of the residents were going to try to go to prom to see them, but it wasn’t very convenient with rides and mobility. So they suggested that they would get dressed up a little early and show up here,” said Sollows. “They’ve been waiting all week for them to come tonight.”

It was all smiles in the dining area as the boys showed up in

their tuxes, and the girls walked in wearing their bright pink and green gowns. They stayed and chatted for a bit, and before rushing off for their grad photos at the high school, the kids made sure to visit a certain resident who couldn’t leave her room.

“They’re really very considerate, and just wonderful,” said

Sollows.Even though it was somewhat of a pilot project this year, Sol-

lows and the residents are hoping GSS will continue with it next year.

“Because these kids were so great, we would like kids to come back next year,” she said.
