CLUB SPOTLIGHTVALENCIA LAKES PICKLEBALL CLUBHAS A NEW “COACH!”

By Jack AkroydHave you ever wanted to go dinking and couldn’t fi nd someone to dink with (and

no, that isn’t a typo); wanted to practice your lobs without annoying the other team; needed to prepare for an upcoming tournament with your partner and practice specifi c shots? Well, the Valencia Lakes Pickleball Club has your solution — the Tutor Pickleball Machine!

Th e Tutor resembles a tennis ball or softball pitching machine but is designed specifi cally for pickleballs. How did we acquire the machine? “I was working on how we could put together an extension of our introductory pickleball clinics (101 and 102), and we were not getting a lot of traction on a plan,” says Ramona Pound, the Pickleball Club President. “I saw the Tutor demonstrated at a USAPA Ambassadors’ meeting and realized it could be the solution to a lot of skills-training needs. Within two weeks, fi ve members donated enough money to buy the machine. Another member donated a ball caddy. My husband and I donated the balls to be used with the machine. Board members Ken Baker and Pete Zachmann got familiar with the machine and developed drills, as well as the process of using and renting the machine. Marge and Dave Burk incorporated the Tutor in training with graduates of PB 102 beginning in February.”

Trainers will be certifi ed in the machine’s use to demonstrate and off er drills incorporating the dink, return of serve, third shot, overheads and volleys. Private 30-minute sessions will also include one of the trainers who will coordinate the operation of the machine. Ramona commented further, “Th e beauty of the machine is that it is so versatile! It can off er something for every skill level of player in the club! We are very excited to add the Tutor to our training and development programs.”

OK, this sounds good but when can I use this machine? Can I use it anytime? Take it home with me? We have anticipated a few of your questions and have the answers below —

1. When is the Tutor machine available for rental?

Th e Tutor ball machine will be available for rent March 1st; after our clinics have begun incorporating the machine into our training.

2. How long can I rent the machine for and what is the cost?

Th e machine can be rented for $5 per half hour and comes with its own pickleballs. Certifi ed trainers will run the machine.

3. Can the machine serve the balls at varying speeds? In diff erent parts of the court?

Ball speed ranges to 50 mph. Th e oscillating feature allows for doubles players to practice at the same time. Th e settings allow for a wide range of shots and trajectories and can be set for the skill level of an individual player.

4. What is the process of reserving the machine?

Club members can log onto the Pickleball Club’s website, (valencia.pickleball.biz), under the Training tab, is a calendar with the available rental times. Up to four players can share the 30-minute session for the $5 fee. Th e VL Pickleball Club encourages club members to take advantage of this great new training tool. See you on the courts!

BICYCLE CLUBTh e Valencia Lakes Bicycle Club was formed in 2009 and is still active. We ride only on paved streets, paths or trails and never where

there is traffi c. We avoid those little roadside sections that have pictures of bicycles painted on the street and we don’t ride on rural roads. Our speed is about 12-14 mph. We ride as a club twice a week. Th ere are both men and women in the club.

On Saturdays we ride in Valencia Lakes. If you ride on every street here, i.e., turn down every cul-de-sac, return to the main road, and continue all around, hitting all the loops, you will have ridden about 16 miles. On Tuesdays we load our bikes on racks or in the backs of SUV’s and leave the premises. About a third of the time we ride in nearby housing developments. Again, we avoid sections with traffi c. Most Tuesdays, however, we go to a park or trail or bike path. On both kinds of Tuesday rides, we go for about 25 to 30 miles.

AFRICAN & LATINO HERITAGE CLUB CELEBRATE HERITAGE MONTHSOn February 28, the African & Latino Heritage Club (ALHC) culminated their celebration of Black History Month. Neighbors

and friends gathered together to experience community and learn something new about the African American experience, including contributions to the arts, sports, the sciences, civil rights, and literature. Guests were surprised to learn that an African American improved the golf tee and invented the potato chip, answering machine, gas mask, and super soaker to name a few. Guests could also shop at an authentic African market, put on by African Extravaganza. Clothing, jewelry, instruments, art, Shea butter, black soap, and oils were for sale. Th en it was time for the main event, Valencia Lakes’ Drum Circle. Playing drums together may build relationships and empower a group more than almost any other activity, and it’s really easy! Jana, of Drum Magic, brought a trailer full of drums. We sang, laughed, drummed, and even danced. What made this activity so unique is that the participants did not just watch another show; they WERE the show. After this vigorous workout it was time to relax, socialize and eat. Th e ALHC off ered up delicious appetizers and drinks for their guest. All had a great time. Th e ALHC invites you to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month on September 30th. Th ere will be a dinner dance, with authentic Puerto Rican cuisine catered by Th e Flavor. Afterwards, the Mambo Lebron Orchestra and DJ Wille will keep you dancing all night long. So save the date — this is one event you would not want to miss!

Th ey were “rockin’ in the aisles” last April as the Valencia Singers presented their annual Spring concert, entitled American Pop Forever! From the opening number, “You Can’t Stop Th e Beat,” from the musical Hairspray, to popular songs from the 50s to today, neither the 50-member chorus nor the receptive audience could keep still.

Th e 110-minute production with no intermission was directed by Ernie Ciarrocchi, the founder of the Valencia Singers. It included a total of forty-one songs, in medleys, sung by the entire chorus, plus eleven numbers performed by individual chorus members, a trio, and two duets. Each decade was also represented by eleven “special music” pieces, from “Th e Wonder of You,” sung beautifully by Bob Hurwitz, to the fi nal individual performance — a magnifi cent interpretation of Whitney Huston’s “I Will Always Love You,” by Lisa Damschroder (that brought the audience to its feet) — all were extremely well-received by the audience.

“We sold nearly 800 tickets for the two performances,” said Michelle Zipin, president of the chorus. We know that a number of residents who attended the April 15 show purchased tickets to the production again on April 24. We don’t think this has ever happened before!

“In addition to funding the Spring concert, Th e Singers use proceeds to pay for music and orchestration for the free performances they off er on occasions like the Holiday Party and our July 4 program. “Sheet music and pre-recorded orchestration is quite expensive,” Michelle added, “as is the special equipment we must purchase for the free shows. Th e generous support we receive from the community allows us to meet these expenses.”

HEALTHY WEIGHT SUPPORT GROUPTh e Valencia Lakes Weight Control Support Group was begun

by Rose Ann Timpa and held its fi rst meeting on January 2, 2016. While not focusing on a specifi c weight loss plan for everyone to follow, the group found its true purpose in the support the members give each other. Th e group was founded in recognition of the fact that many of us have achieved signifi cant weight loss but have not been able to maintain that success. Meetings are every other Saturday in one of the clubhouse multi-purpose rooms and the members have been following the plans of their choice which include Weight Watchers, Nutri-System, Atkins, calorie and carb counting and various types of exercise. It was not, and still is not, the intent of the Valencia Lakes Healthy Weight Control Support Group to provide a single plan for all to follow. As a result, weight loss has also varied. Th e insights off ered by each of the members has been invaluable to the group and each member has a specifi c goal in mind.

Th e VLWCSG is going to be planning a “healthy eating luncheon” and members have exchanged recipes and tips that have assisted all in trying new things. Th e members agree that having regular meetings with others with similar histories and who have become more like supportive family members, has helped them continue on their journey to better weight management and to better overall health. Th e VLWCSG will continue to meet as scheduled and dates and contact information are published weekly as part of the VL Lifestyle Updates.
