Lent As we approach the third Sunday in Lent, we are offered for reflection the theme of LIVING WATER. Water gushes forth from unexpected places. In the Reading from Exodus, God promises to send gushing water from the rock at Horeb (v.6). In Romans it is the Holy Spirit, ‗poured into our hearts‘ (v.5), while in the Gospel of John, we read how Jesus promises living water in which one will never be thirsty (v.14), right there in a forlorn place, at noon, in the sun‘s heat. This gushing forth of promised living water in unexpected places captures some-thing of the ways of God, whose grace takes us by surprise.
Lent is a Season that commences with Jesus tempted in the dry harsh desert. It is a Season of penance, dryness and preparation. We are in the third week and there is still the rest of Lent ahead of us, calling us to reach out to others in need, to resist over indulgence, to journey the road to Calvary. We have time to reflect the unjust trial and horrific crucifixion of Christ who wants to redeem us.
Yet in the midst of the desert experience of Lent, our Readings open the flood gates, and allow water to gush forth. Is it a reminder that God‘s love is ever near? Is it an invitation to wash away our failings and sins? Begin again. Does the refreshing water beckon us to re-newed energy?
Lent may appear a somber time in the Church Season but it can also be a time of unex-pected grace that is poured into our hearts. Are we thirsty for new life? The purpose of the journey through Lent is to experience the loving presence of God reawakened in our lives, little by little, like drops of rain on parched land. The final pouring at the Resurrection will then become all the more invigorating to us, who have been transformed by the Lenten experience.
A final thought. In our Great Southern Land, how much a reality have we seen a Lenten experience? For years we were aware mainly of a ‗sunburnt country‘ withering away into desert because of lack of rain. The flood gates opened and what was parched suddenly experienced the downpour of water and new life. As a Nation, a school community, a family, may we experience new life, a Resurrection, this Easter.
Peace and all good

WELL DONE JUBILEE!
Great effort by all at the Catholic Schools Swimming Carnival

Dear Parents,
Recently I have made a point of standing up the top of the driveway to the school, to observe the parking habits of parents and to see how safe this drop off and pick up system is working. I must admit that the vast majority of you seem to be extremely cautious and vigilant when dropping off and picking up your children.
Can I please reiterate that the following are ABSOLUTELY NOT ACCEPTABLE means of dropping off or picking up students:
Stopping at the Manra Way roundabout or it’s immediate entries or exits to let your children out of the car (as I witnessed yesterday afternoon). This is not only dangerous it is PLAIN DUMB!
Waiting in your car whilst parking on Manra Way and getting your children to walk up to you. In my opinion, as Principal of Jubilee Primary School, I don‘t care how late you are running or how far you have to park away. Parking your vehicle and walking a couple of hundred meters (at worst) in the name of safety will always be expected over convenience and laziness! We have parents with babies in strollers who do the right thing and walk this distance every day and I applaud you for doing so. If these responsible and thoughtful parents can do it – then those few lazy and ignorant parents who regularly disobey these rules surely can!
Parking across driveways in Manra Way. I am sure if I got the school ute, came over to your place and parked you in you wouldn‘t be overly enthused about it. For some of our neighbours, this is almost a daily occurrence. In saying this, there is no specific space that needs to be left from the edge of a driveway to a parked vehicle. Please refer to the following when parking on Manra Way. Thanks to Acting Senior Constable Paul Shaw (Jubilee‘s Adopt-A-Cop) who provided me with the correct information.
Legislation - TRANSPORT OPERATIONS (ROAD USE MANAGEMENT–ROAD RULES) REGULATION 2009
Section:
198 Obstructing access to and from a footpath, driveway etc.

ramp or a similar way of access to a footpath, or a bicycle path or passageway unless–
(a) the driver is driving a bus that is dropping off, or picking up, passengers; or
(b) the driver–
(i) stops in a parking bay; and
(ii) is permitted to stop in the parking bay under this regulation.
Maximum penalty–20 penalty units.
(2) A driver must not stop on or across a driveway or other way of access for vehicles travelling to or from adjacent land
unless–
(a) the driver–
(i) is dropping off or picking up passengers; and
(ii) does not leave the vehicle unattended; and
(iii) completes the dropping off or picking up of the passengers, and drives on, as soon as practicable and, in any case,
within 2 minutes after stopping; or
(b) the driver–
(i) stops in a parking bay; and
(ii) is permitted to stop in the parking bay under this regulation.
Maximum penalty–20 penalty units.
(3) For subsection (2)(a)(ii), a driver leaves a vehicle unattended if the driver is more than 3m from the closest part of
the vehicle.

In the end, common courtesy and common sense is all that is required to fix these problems. I have spoken with both the Queensland Police and the Gold Coast City Council recently and I have implored them to come out to our site and ‗Throw the Book‘ at anyone who is continuing to flagrantly break the rules and endanger the lives of our students, parents and staff.
Again, to the vast majority of you who do the right thing day in day out – a massive thank you!
MULTI-PURPOSE CENTRE & STAFF CARPARKING
We are now not far away from getting into our new Multi-Purpose Centre – maybe March 28, not sure. We will be having our grand opening of this facility more than likely at the beginning of 2012 when our next stage of building (i.e. Stage 5) is completed at the end of this year. In this way, we can have one big opening for all of our new facilities. Stage 5 Building will begin in June/July this year and will involve:
The building of 3 new classrooms under Block 2, Covered Eating Area between Block 2 and the Library, new uniform shop and PE Storage Area;
An extension of the Library, existing under covered area down stairs, admin building.
So just when you thought the construction had finished, here we go again!
I would also like to provide you all with advanced warning that when our new Multi-Purpose Centre opens, the new car parking spaces will need to be designated as staff car parking. We now have over 50 staff at Jubilee and these new car parking spaces will still not bring us up to the required legal amount for staff parking. This will mean that the current systems for parking will remain the same for parents when the new facilities open. This issue has long been discussed with BCEO Staff, our School Architects and myself and unfortunately we have no room (literally) to move on this issue.
I am in negotiations currently with Queensland Transport to implement the ―Look Out‖ parental parking system here at Jubilee. I hope to have a representative from QLD Transport at one of our upcoming P&F Meetings.

Blindness In More Ways
By Catherine Pulsifer, © 2011
We all too often refer to the state of blindness as a physical disability. And, we all know how debilitating this physically challenging state can be for those who had sight previously in their life and went blind because of an accident. But, did you know that blindness could also affect people who have perfectly good eyesight?
I am thinking specifically of those types of people who may not have had a lot in their lives, and who constantly struggled just to put food on their table, or to pay those recurring monthly bills. And, down the road, some of these people had the good fortune to be assisted to do more and have more by a special friend or, in some cases, people who were originally complete strangers.
Some people were given every opportunity to get ahead and had assistance in helping them pay bills, or help in finding a better job through personal contacts. And, as time goes by, these people excelled and were able to move on to better living conditions and in many cases, were able to not only buy their first home but were able to start enjoying some of the finer amenities of life.
So, why do I refer to some of these people as suffering from blindness? Simply put, once they succeeded in leaving their unrewarding past behind, they also left behind their capacity to acknowledge, or help those still less fortunate and those who also were in the same position they were only a short time ago. It seems that they suffer from blindness in not being able to see that what you give you get back over and over again; they forgot that they had help to move forward in life and they are now blind to the responsibility to help at least one other person to be what they can be through active helping.
To me, there is nothing as sad as a person who becomes selfish when they in fact would never have succeeded without the assistance of another person. Now, does this mean that you should not help someone who is hard pressed to get ahead because they do not have the skills, or the where withal to take advantage of opportunities, or to even know how to take advantage of educational programs specifically designed for part-time attendance because no one has shown them the way?
No, it does not mean this at all. What it means is that giving to others is more a state of mind, the ability to see beyond our own selfishness, or our own self-image or ego. It means that we are human and every human has a responsibility to help those who are not as well positioned to help themselves. It means that we continue to offer kindness, consideration, and assistance because whether we want to admit it or not, we all had help of one sort or another to accomplish what we wanted, or to be where we wanted, or to have more than we ever imagined.
Thank you for reading!
With every blessing for the week ahead,
David Sewell

G’day from the APA
G’day everyone ! Last week our Yrs P-2 classes had their first sessions of the Sportmate gross and fine motor program with Mr John Greig and, from what I saw each time I popped up for a visit, the students and teachers were loving it ! These sessions take place each Tuesday for Yr 2 and Thursday for Prep & Yr 1 for the last 5 weeks of each term. Also last week our Yrs 4 – 7 classes attended the Somerset Literacy Festival, where current authors were guset speakers in various sessions. I asked a few students about the authors they enjoyed the most and Andy Griffith and Andrew Daddo rated pretty highly among the responses, but every student I asked said that the visit was great.
Tomorrow (Wed 23) we farewell our Yr 5 students and teachers, plus Mr Sewell, Mrs Clarke and Mr Parry, as they embark on their three day/two night outdoor education camp to Midginbil Hill in northern NSW. I attended last year‘s camp with our current Yr 6‘s and we had a ball, so I am sure that our current Yr 5‘s will do likewise. All the best for a great camp experience, Yr 5 !
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of taking a sneak peek of the new hall facility, which is now very close to completion. It looks outstanding… and it does stand out in its position on top of the ridge ! I can‘t wait for us to be able to hold our first school assembly in the new hall and I am sure that it is going to be a wonderful asset to our school and church communities.
Special School Focus: We are currently in the middle of a school focus about positive words and actions. I wrote last week about a tension in the community over the past few weeks and I can feel that starting to lift a little, but, in difficult times, it‘s often the smallest things that can make a huge difference to how people feel and cope. Our current Special School Focus calls upon us to think before we speak or act (or react) and try to avoid negative responses and actions that only compound difficult situations.
“Make sure the things we do and say
Brighten other people’s day.”
Bullying and Ant-social Behaviour: I‘d just like to share a few thoughts about the recent buying video clip that has drawn so much recent attention in the media and on the Net. Each of us will have our own opinions about the actions of both individuals and the media, with regard to this situation. However, I feel that it is important for us to state clearly that here at Jubilee, we work with and support our students in encouraging the use of non-physical and non-violent ways to resolve disputes and solve our problems wherever possible. We are careful to distinguish between bullying and social conflict situations (not every little social conflict is actually “bullying”) and we try to offer support and strategies for both individuals in our efforts to reduce anti-social and bullying behaviours when they arise.
Have a great Week 9 everyone !
Regards,
Brian Mason (Assistant Principal, Administration.)

Purple Day for Epilepsy –Tuesday 29th March
On Tuesday 29th March our school is celebrating World Epilepsy Awareness Day by wearing purple - the recognised colour worldwide for Epilepsy.

Epilepsy is the world's most common serious brain disorder and will affect 10% of Australians at some stage during their lifetime.
Please bring a gold coin donation and wear purple –all funds raised assist Epilepsy Queensland as they continue to support those affected by epilepsy throughout Queensland.
Remember to be Sun Smart and wear covered in footwear.

Dear Parents,
May every sunrise Hold more promise, And every sunset Hold more peace.
We offer ongoing prayers for Japan as this tragedy continues to unfold.
Jesus teaches us that it is possible to break down barriers that separate and alienate people, to open up the possibilities of experiencing and sharing our gifts and knowledge.
We can live differently - in solidarity with marginalised communities, open to the stories of cultures different from our own and prepared to challenge unjust structures. We can work in partnership to make a difference.

Shave for a Cure
This year Zac M and Brayden C are prepared to shave their heads to assist the Leukaemia Foundation and so far they have raised over $1200. We congratulate these boys for the initiative they have shown in offering their hair for the cause and raising so much money. And of course, if you would like to further support the boys in their endeavours you are welcome to make a donation at the front office. These boys will have their heads shaved at assembly on Friday 1st April. Mr. Sewell suggests that if our fundraising is high enough he‘ll also be undergoing a transformation at assembly with a change of hair colour.
Parent Support People
On Monday morning an enthusiastic group of parents met as Parent Support People for 2011. The role of PSP‘s includes the organisation of friendship lists and class/year level social activities. We thank these Mums for their time and commitment in making Jubilee a school that supports and nurtures its community.

Project Compassion, Week 3, brings you the story of Rosa.
Rosa lives in Bolivia‘s isolated Yuquí-Yuracaré Indigenous Community Lands. With Caritas Australia‘s support, these river communities have come together to identify their strengths and their needs. From this, the Ethno Eco Tourism project was born. One project with three amazing outcomes: to provide an income, to protect the environment and preserve their culture.
Your donation to Project Compassion enables marginalised communities to participate in their own development and create a future free from poverty. www.caritas.org.au
