Pinhoti Trail Hike: Join Anniston Outdoor Association to hike a different section of the Pinhoti Trail each month (Jan-Dec). This hike is free for members of the Anniston Outdoor Association (visit http://www.annistonal.gov/pages/?pageID=83 for more info or to join the association). For non-members the fee is $5 per person. North Pinhoti Hike: This will be a 7.8 mile hike over Indian Mountain beginning at the Salem Church Road crossing located off of US 278 east of Piedmont and ending at the Jackson Chapel Road in Georgia. This is the most northern section of the Pinhoti Trail in Alabama and is characterized by rocky terrain, ledges, some steep ascents/descents, and several scenic overlooks. The departure time and location for this hike is 8:00 a.m. from the Winn Dixie parking lot in Jacksonville, AL. Please contact Keith Hudson by phone at 256.239.8746 or by email at [email protected] if you would like additional information or plan to participate in this hike. Little River Canyon Hike: Join National Park Service Shawn Waddell and DeSoto State Park Naturalist Brittney Hughes for an interpretive hike at Little River Canyon. This is a moderate to difficult hike due to incline and walking on river rocks. Meet at 9 am at the Little River Canyon Center and caravan to hike start point. For more information or to register for this hike (registration required 5 days prior to hike) contact JSU Field Schools at 256-782-8010. No fee.

Growing Up WILD for Preschool Children: Food, Water & Shelter Join Canyon Center staff and volunteers for fun nature and art programs for preschool age children. This program is based on the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Project Wild: Growin’ up Wild curriculum. Date: Saturday, January 19, 2013 Where: Little River Canyon Center Time: 11:00 am - noon Fee: No fee; some programs may have limited space so pre-registration is encouraged Living Wild Family Fun Program: Wild Survival Join Canyon Center staff and volunteers for fun nature programs including hikes, crafts, games, nature talks, activities and more. Date: Saturday, January 19, 2013 Where: Little River Canyon Center Time: 1:00- 2:00 pm Fee: No fee; some programs may have limited space so pre-registration is encouraged Wilderness Survival 101 Let your instincts come alive and learn to survive. JSU Field Schools, Alabama State Parks and National Park Service staff will teach hands-on methods of basic survival skills dealing with water, shelter, food, fire and getting found. Skills are similar to those shown on popular TV. This program will be OUTSIDE, hands-on, hiking, collecting materials with hands so wear appropriate clothing for a cold winter day in the wilderness. Participants will be sitting on the ground, crawling on the ground as necessary, and will get “dirty” so to speak. Dress in layers. Bring your own lunch, snacks and water/drink. The Trion High School steel drum band from Trion, GA was established in 2004. This unique ensemble has grown in size and popularity from its humble beginnings. DeSoto State Park Campfire Talks What: JSU Field Schools partner with Alabama State Parks to offer an interesting, educational and entertaining series of FREE programs known as “Campfire Talks.” When and Where: These programs are offered every Friday and Saturday evening (May – October) at DeSoto State Park’s Campfire Circle.
