The most extensive state funded small business assistance program in the nation

• Started in 1984 by General Assembly
• SBC hosted by Community Colleges
• Some SBCs have multiple sites or satellite offices – 60+ offices
• SBCs are positioned to focus on entrepreneurship & economic development
• SBC within 30 minute drive of every North Carolinian
• 100% State funded through NC Legislature ($6.1M FY2013-2014)
• Funding represents an investment of $2,117 per job created/retained by network

JSCC Small Business Center in a Nutshell
• Purpose is to create startups, assist troubled businesses & create/retain jobs
• All services are FREE or nominal cost – Confidential One-on-One Counseling
– Workshops & Seminars
– Resources & Referrals
• Seminars/Workshops under 10hrs, most 3 hrs
• Local and Available

Our primary purpose is Economic Development from a Main Street perspective
• Increase success rate and number of profitable small businesses
• Create jobs
• Significant education component
• The SBC is the lead agency for exploring business ownership & the go-to technical assistance provider for downtown & Main Street businesses
• SBC is lead NC agency for “Boots 2 Business” training for transitioning military members
