Parent Informational Meeting for Contestants and Ushers

Purpose & Date
• Sponsored by Teen Living & FCCLA – (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America)
• Pageant is a fundraiser for FCCLA STAR Event Competitors to attend the National Leadership Conference in Washington, DC
• Pageant Date: Saturday, May 16, 2014 – Doors open at 3:00 pm– Program begins at 5:00 pm promptly
Pageant Goal
• A beauty pageant is a competition that mainly focuses on the physical beauty of its contestants, although the SCMS pageant will incorporate personality and answers to judges' questions as judged criteria.
• The goal of the pageant is to promote self-esteem and public-speaking abilities of the contestants.
Entry Fee for Contestants(not ushers)
• Pageant Entry Fees $30 Entry Fee due when Application is submitted: – $30 per contestant. – Pageant Entry Fees are required to be submitted
three weeks before the day of the pageant. – This ensures that all awards, gifts and publication
arrangements have been completed for the day of the pageant.
Most Photogenic • A great photo happens when you feel comfortable in
the moment and the photographer captures it at the perfect time.
• It is a combination of composition, background, lighting, and timing.
• Your hair, makeup, wardrobe, and accessories must all harmonize with each other to create a feeling.
• Submitted Photos may be professional or amateur
• Submitted photos are to be handed to Ms. Herrin
Round One (All Contestants)
• Lady in Red (Dressy/Casual Attire) – Colors: Must at least have a pop of Red. Grey, White and
Black.– No Jeans, tube tops, spaghetti straps– Dress / Skirts must be fingertip length
• Contestants will introduce themselves during the Lady in Red category.
• Formal Attire (Long Pageant Gowns or Long Prom Dress)
• Male Ushers will assist the contestants in their walk-through
Round Two (Top 15 Contestants)
• Formal Attire (Long Pageant Gowns or Long Prom Dress)
• Contestants will have an onstage question.
• Questions will be given to contestants three weeks before the pageant for their preparations.
• Male Ushers will assist the contestants in their walk-through.

• Miss SCMS Congeniality
– Congeniality means easy to get along with; sociable; friendly. A congenial person is considered to be good company in various circumstances, compatible.
• Mr. SCMS (Awarded by high scores from Usher Assessments)
Preparation
• Application – Youth Groups– School Activities– Sports – Clubs – Church activities you regularly attend– Mention any unusual hobbies – Good grades
Make yourself unique and stand out!!
Posture and Poise
• Walking straight with your head held high is a sign of good posture, which is essential at a pageant.
• Practice walking in your shoes & dress– Do NOT buy higher shoes than you can walk in
just to not have your dress hemmed.
• PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE!
Makeup and Hair
Makeup should be at a moderate approach
Look up hairstyles of pageant winners online take printouts to your hairdresser to discuss
the options and suitability to your facial features
Formal Dress• Choose a dress that is age-appropriate and that makes you
feel good when you wear it.
• Attire that reveals midriff, bust, and/or not floor length will not be permitted.
• Contestants will not be allowed to participate in the category.
• Dress Code will be strictly enforced.
• Make a plan: Take into consideration every factor of the process from beginning to end when looking for the perfect dress: – Budget and timing – Style Research – Fitting and Alterations– Practice walking in it
Lady in Red Casual Wear
• Colors: Must at least have a pop of Red. Grey, White and Black.
• Be Creative
• "dressy casual" in style, not formal dresses
• Attire that reveals midriff, bust, and/or shorter than finger-tip length will not be permitted. Contestants will not be allowed to participate in the category.
• Dress Code will be strictly enforced.
Ushers
• $15 Entry Fee due when Application is submitted
• Fee Payment and Application does not entitle you as an SCMS Usher.
• A Self-Assessment and a Teacher Assessment will be given.
• The top high scored applicants will be awarded as an
Usher for the Junior Miss SCMS Pageant

•Accepted Ushers must be committed to practices with the pageant contestants
•The ushers’ mini school teachers will complete an assessment using the Character Pillars as a guideline.
•Exploratory teachers will vote on each usher (Mr. SCMS candidate) grades 6-8.
•The usher with the highest amount of points (self-assessment, mini school assessment, and exploratory assessment) will be awarded Mr. SCMS.

• Tie (Red, Black, Gray, or White)
