Calling All Designers!

We are looking for an Oktoberfest 2010 logo design. The design will be incorporated into a two-minute video that will be put up on the national Web site

sometime in September/October to advertise as well as being used on merchandise, etc. My personal preference would be to include a beer stein, but anything goes. Any interested persons are invited to enter their designs to Darcy and they will be forwarded to Linda Axelson, the National Events Coordinator, for final pick. Submissions must be sent as JPEG files to [email protected] no later than August 15th. Check out the Web site and inside the immer for further details.

The Badger Bimmers are having a get together in our loca-tion outside Turn 14 at Road America. It will take place on Saturday, August 15th and Sunday, August 16th during the ALMS race weekend. Lots of room for parking BMWs in our car corral. We’re still working out the details for lunch but we always have our gas grill to use! It works GREAT! Watch for further details in here, on the Web and e-mail alerts. If you are not on the e-mail list, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/invite/BadgerBimmersClubNews and sign up.

Did you hear? Our OktoberFAST Driving School is filling up fast. Friday, October 9, is almost full so, if you plan to attend, get your registra-tion done NOW or you might find yourself on the waiting list. You don’t want to miss this one.

from the President by Darcy Yench

We have our annual evening car show at Pandl’s on Tuesday, August 4th. We had 30 cars last year. Let’s see if we can top it this year!

The Board meetings are open to the members and it would be nice to see some of you attending. The next meeting is Thursday, August 13th at Pandl’s. We have a nice selection of snacks, so come and help us eat some!

Linda Axelson, National’s Events Planning Coordinator, has secured our host hotel, the Osthoff for Oktoberfest 2010 in Elkhart Lake. We are moving ahead with the planning for August 22-29, 2010. We have our chairpersons assigned for the various events. It should be a GREAT time and we will need LOTS of volunteers to help put on the show. Let me know if you would like to add your name to the list for helping since it’s a great way to make new friends. No experience needed, just your enthusiasm!

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the Annual Holiday Party — January 9, 2010. We are still looking for the location.

I still challenge all of you to find a new activity to get involved in. There’s a great number of things left to do this year and we are always looking to add new ideas. Check out the Web site, calendar or come to a meeting. Get involved. We want to see you!

‘Til later… bi

2009 Car ShowBy David Swernoff

The 7th Annual Badger Bimmers Car show was a suc-cess!! This year we had 24 entrants, nearly equal to our 25 entrants from 2008. Concours BMW did a

wonderful job of opening up their showroom and service bay areas to facilitate our members and guests. The typi-cal “Stein” trophies were awarded and there was a nice variety of snacks and morning drinks set up alongside the registration table. The variety of cars this year ranged from a 1600 Baur convertible, to an Alpina B10 5-series. Based on the number of E30s, I think they are making their name as a cult classic across the Internet and word of car shows is bringing out many nice examples for us to enjoy. There were about 10 E30 cars on display, one of which won best BMW of the 1990s, a pristine 325i cabrio. This

was truly one of the cleanest factory original E30s I have ever seen, and no doubt one of the cleanest ones in the entire region. A very rare Alpina B10, which is a German modified e34 5-series, was a great car to see pop up at our show as well. The Alpina B10 has a twin turbo M30 motor stuffed into an e34 5-series chassis. Straight from Germany, this modified beast was quite the site to see.

Page 1 of 3 3/20/09 6:55 PM

We have scheduled four drivers’ education events for 2009. Three of the events will be held at

Blackhawk Farms Raceway and the fourth event will be held at Road America. The three

events at Blackhawk will be held in conjunction with the Milwaukee Region Porsche Club. (Due

to economic conditions they decided to participate with the Badger Bimmers instead of running

separate PCA events.) Badger Bimmer and Milwaukee Region members will have equal

access to the three Blackhawk events. Event dates are listed in this issue’s Calendar, page 2.

Event Registration

This year all event registration will again be handled through www.motorsportreg.com.

Between now and when registration opens you need to do one of two things. If you don’t

already have an account at motorsportreg.com you will need to create one. If you already have

an account all you need to do is add the Badger Bimmers as one of your club memberships.

Motorsportreg.com does offer credit card payment services but at the present time we still will

only allow payment by check. At the end of the registration process for an event a confirmation

page will be displayed that contains information about where your check must be sent along

with some waiver information. You must print the confirmation page, sign and date it and then

send it in along with your check.

If you have questions about the process of using motorsportreg.com please send an e-mail to

Mike Clemens at [email protected]. The next two pages detail the steps for creating a

motorsportreg.com account or for updating your current account to include the Badger Bimmers.

Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and again in The Sting (1972) cemented his reputation as a char-acter actor. But his camps for seriously ill children, his phi-lanthropy, and his racing were his greatest accomplishments.

Newman himself said his racing career was his proudest accomplishment. He didn’t begin racing until his 50s. Ten years before the end of his driving career, he became the oldest driver to win a professional race at the 24 hours of Daytona. He was 70. He believed that racing cars was the only experience in which he could be both skilled and grace-ful. His reputation was that he was consistent, able to run lap after lap within a few tenths of a second of each other. He memorized tracks before he drove them, and he was never considered to be a celebrity driver by those who knew him on the track. He won four national SCCA championships in the runoffs. The only grumble of discontent — pretty stan-

dard in amateur racing — was that he had an unlimited budget and thus resources for building competitive cars. He never displayed a “celeb-rity” ego, and he was respected for his driving skills and his natural modesty.

With his good fortune he felt obligated to help others. His Hole in the Wall camps provided thousands of kids opportunities for healthy rec-reation and medical support. His salad dress-ings made enough money to give large gifts to Kenyon College (his alma mater), the Yale School of Drama, the Actor’s Studio, and a foundation in the name of his son, Scott, who died of a drug overdose in his 30s.

Levy’s book does not have the polish or style of the best biographies. Nor does it reveal any of the challenges to Newman’s marriage with Joan Woodward. His writing is uninspired. But Paul Newman’s life makes the book worth reading. It is especially gratifying that he made the greatest contributions of his life in his last twenty years. bi

Pat’s PersPective

Hello, Want to Learn About Driving School Prep?

Pat Kummrow here. I’m the owner of the newly opened Kummrow Automotive, LLC in Glendale, occupying the same space where Denis Wisniewski ran Alpine Imports for many years. In fact, many of his

past customers have already found us.

I’d like to start off this soon-to-be-regular column with a giant thank you to Badger Bimmers and the Board of Directors for the tremendous sup-port we are getting from you guys. Back when I worked at Little Car Shop, it was apparent that the Club could be the lifeblood of a shop, and that’s what we want to achieve: a strong relationship with one of the fin-est organizations around and with some of the best people I’ve ever met. I cannot begin to tell you how much I appreciate the trust you put in me when you ask me to work on your cars.

I hope to be a regular contributor to the immer and also Club activities through our support, sponsorship and attendance. A good relationship is a two-way street, and we hope to stick to this principle. Continued on page 9

2009 Golf Outing

Photos by David Thuerk

Broadlands Golf ClubMay 30, 2009

We returned to the Broadlands for our annual Badger Bimmers Golf Outing on May 30th. The day started out wet, very wet. I drove through heavy rain at times

and as I reached the course the rain subsided. Since the forecast was for clearing and good weather, we proceeded with warm-up on the putting green and driving range. At tee time, we could see the clouds thinning and within the hour

the sky was clearing. The day turned out to be sunny and warmed up into the 70s. This course is really great.

The scores ranged from 80 (great shooting, Jim Grom!) to over 100. We had 12 players this year, taking advantage of our Club’s subsidizing a portion of the green fees. We all really had a great time on the course and afterwards in the bar. For $36 it was a great deal at an excellent course. Hope to see more of our Club members next year. If you have any suggestion on what course you would like to play with the Club, send me an e-mail at [email protected]. bi

Page 9july 2009

Each track season, we all want to go racing and feel like David Hobbs or Hans Stuck as we beat our Bimmers around the track, on the autocross course, in rallyes, or even in a spirited commute. It is important to remember that, the deeper we go toward the higher-end driving situations, the more attention our cars need to hold up to the task.

Today, I just want to share a few brief words about prepping your car for a driving school. I will not be covering all aspects, but just the most important ones. Let’s start with brakes.

Brakes Probably the single most important area of concern for any driver. Going fast is optional, stopping is mandatory! Choose a premium brake pad, something made for the track. They are expensive, but so is your sheet metal. Install them weeks ahead of time so that you give them plenty of time to be bed-ded-in properly. Poorly bedded-in pads will wear away very quickly on the track. The more bedding-in the better. Some people will even take a second set of pads and bed those in as well so that when they get to the track, they have two sets of ready to go pads on hand. You just never know...

Brake FluidOld fluid is a death sentence. You should be aware that brake fluid, by its nature, absorbs moisture. The more it absorbs, the less effective the fluid becomes. The water in it boils and surprise, no brakes! Brake fluid is rated as a DOT2 or DOT3 or DOT4 to indicate its moisture avidity, or how fast it will absorb water. Always choose at least a DOT4. Brake fluid also has a wet and dry boiling point. Select a fluid with the highest boiling point you can afford. The most expen-sive fluids can cost $75.00 per liter!! ATE Super Blue is an excellent compromise. ATE also makes a fluid with the same specs as Super Blue, but it is gold in color. By alternating the color each fluid change, you can more easily tell when you are actually getting the old fluid out of the system. Do NOT use silicone-based fluids for racing!

If you are going to get up and into the advanced classes, strongly consider brake ducts. The more cooling you can provide the better. This does get into actually modifying the car, but for some people, this is the way they want to go. If your brakes are heat-fading on the track, you get two choices — change how you use the brakes or add cooling.

Understand that both pads and rotors are considered expendable wear items. If you’re gonna drive fast and stop hard, you’re gonna wear out pads and rotors. Sorry, that’s the way it goes in the fast lane. Think YOUR brakes cost a bunch, go ask a Club member who has a big brake kit installed how much THEIR brakes cost. You don’t hear them whining. bi

this year was Elliott Schnackenberger with his 1600 Baur, a very rare car and a fine example at that. Other notable entrants were an E28 M5, E30 M3, 2002 automatic, and a variety of E36, E46, E90, and E30 3-series cars. My favorite thing about the show is the annual variety we see in entrants. It’s really great to see so many different decades of BMW cars represented in a modern showroom and so many different ages of enthusiasts along side their BMWs. The annual car show is one of those rare times when age is irrelevant and all enthusi-asts are welcome to voice their opinions, show off their BMWs, and enjoy each others company.

Next year, we hope to have better weather and even more BMWs to admire. Congratulations to Elliott for winning two years in a row. We can’t wait to see what you’ll bring next year! bi

bimmer immer Editor, Design Artist WantedContact the Editor or the President @badgerbimmers.org

After two stints and many years of creating the immer to various degrees of success, your hum-ble team of editor and design artist are seeking

to replace themselves with new talent. We are not necessarily looking for two individuals, but this set up has worked very well for us for the last several years. Feel free to apply for one or both positions.

The main qualification you must have is the passion for volunteer work. A passion for cars also helps. You must have good command of English and its grammar, an eye for a nice picture, and an ability and willingness to deal with advertisers. In gen-eral, the editor is expected to attend the monthly meetings (2nd Thursdays) and provide feedback and updates to the Board.

We have been using Adobe® InDesign® running on Macintosh computers to create the immer so far, but that’s not necessarily a limiting factor since many excellent publications may be produced using other systems. The software and OS you are com-fortable with is what we will go with.

Interested individuals should also know that the Board of Directors of Badger Bimmers decided many years ago that the editor and design artist for the immer be granted complimentary admission to driver education events, of which we currently have four. bi
