Giving birth is a joyful and wonderful event. Parents and caretakers are anxious, yet filled with hope for a bright future. But sometimes, those hopes of a bright future, starting a family, and fulfilling dreams must be placed on hold when a baby is born sick or premature. For these babies, there is a special place where they receive the additional care they need. For our babies, it’s the level II nursery at East Alabama Medical Center.

East Alabama Medical Center currently houses a Level II Special Care Nursery, but has plans for renovating part of that unit to create an 11-bed neonatal intensive care unit. Since June 2019, more than 150 babies have been admitted for further care by our team of highly trained medical professionals. Unfortunately, we are still having to transport many critically ill and premature

newborns—as well as mothers who are still pregnant and expected to deliver prematurely—to a facility with a level 3 NICU out of town. Not only is this a financial burden for families, it creates a grueling separation for mother and baby post-birth. Keeping families together optimizes bonding, growth and education as well as reduces the anxiety felt by the family from having the baby transported elsewhere.

Our community, however, is growing exponentially and many of our newcomers and current residents need a broader scope

of care. The proposed NICU will address those needs. It will consist of 11 private rooms to keep critically ill and premature newborns at EAMC. In each room, there will be overnight accommodations and furniture to allow for a possibly lengthy stay Each room will also be equipped with state-of-the-art technology used to improve quality of life. The renovated space will provide enhanced patient safety and a more positive overall care experience. We are scheduled to have a fully operational NICU in Fall/Winter 2021.

What a Year — several new board members, the Spencer Cancer Center opening and many new projects in the pipeline! This is truly an exciting time for East Alabama Medical Center and the EAMC Foundation. My sincere gratitude to Dr. Steven Presley, Brad Wilson, and Jerry Mattson for their many years of service on the Board of Directors. Their continued leadership in the community and in their respective professions will have a positive impact on everyone around them. We welcome new board members, Dr. Pradeep Lall, John Boles, Marty Williams, Dr. Rob Marino and Colleen Alsobrook, who replaces her late husband, O.D., who served on the EAMC Foundation Board through September 2019. We appreciate the contribution that O.D. made to our organization and our community, and miss him dearly. Our goal for 2020 is to continue to support the mission of East Alabama Medical Center: to provide high-quality, compassionate health care and to touch as many lives as possible through serving and giving. A new freestanding Emergency Department, Ambulatory Surgery Center and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit are in various stages of development to serve our expanding community. We are grateful for the EAMC dedicated staff, nurses, physicians and administration who selflessly care for us in our times of need. This year proved to be a year of unexpected, expected and extraordinary occurrences. With the untimely passing of new EAMC Foundation Board Member, O.D. Alsobrook, we grieved and mourned with his family at the loss of a special person. With the opening of the E.L. Spencer, Jr. & Ruth Priester Spencer Cancer Center in June, we welcomed many new and existing patients into our world-class, state-of-the-art cancer treatment facility. With the completion of the cancer campaign, we celebrated because donors like you were able to help us exceed our goal of $7.5 million. The EAMC Foundation is so fortunate to have maintained relationships with previous donors, built relationships with new donors and paved the way for future donors who can join us in supporting the mission of East Alabama Medical Center. As you read through this publication, you will see that we continued to build on traditions such as Swing for Diabetes, Think Pink, The Christmas Ball and others. We are pleased to announce that the 2nd Annual Christmas Ball raised over $102,000.

During the recent COVID-19 crisis, more than 25,500 meals were donated for EAMC staff between March 18 and May 15. That includes those provided by both Chambers (Auburn – 3,495 and Opelika – 2,272). Community Donations to EAMC Foundation sponsored 10,000 meals to Night Shift (Dr. Hagan and Friends). We also had nearly 10,000 additional meals for day shift donated by the community—restaurants, corporations, and individuals. Additionally, Auburn University partnered with us to help meet PPE needs: They used 3D printers to print face shields, with their materials engineering department facilitating air filtration and gown penetration assessments, as well as donating numerous other PPE needs.

What a wonderful, compassionate community we serve. To those of you who contributed your time, your knowledge, your resources and your funding—thank you! We are most grateful for you.

A native of Ocala, Florida, Colleen has lived in the East Alabama area for over 40 years, 25 years in Opelika. She attended Auburn University and is a graduate of the Medical College of Georgia where she received her Bachelor of Science in

Nursing. For over 41 years, Colleen was an RN at EAMC and she retired as the hospital’s first Breast Health Navigator. The EAMC Foundation is proud to have Colleen serve starting January 2020 as she takes the seat held by her late husband, O.D. Alsobrook. In her spare time, Colleen enjoys spending time at the beach and with her three sons, two daughters-in-law and six grandchildren.

Dr. Pradeep Lall is the MacFarlane Endowed Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering with Courtesy Joint Appointments in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of

Finance at Auburn University. He is the Director of the NSF-CAVE3 Electronics Research Center and serves on the Technical and Governing Council of NextFlex National Manufacturing Institute. Dr. Lall and his wife, Dr. Rekha Lall, have been residents of Auburn for many years, and we are thrilled he joined the EAMC Foundation Board of Directors in January 2020.

Although Dr. Rob Marino is a native of New Orleans, LA, he and his wife, Janie, have made Auburn their home. Dr. Marino is a board certified OB/GYN and joined Lee OB/GYN in July 2008. He currently serves on numerous clinical

committees within East Alabama Medical Center, the Baby Steps program at Auburn University and at Women’s Hope. When not spending time with his wife and three children, Dr. Marino enjoys hunting, Lake Martin and tinkering with his old Jeep. The EAMC Foundation Board of Directors was pleased to have him join in January 2020.

Marty Williams joined the EAMC Foundation Board of Directors in January 2020. He has worked in the accounting profession for over 30 years, almost all of which have been at Machen McChesney

accounting firm in Auburn. Marty and his wife, Robin, have two sons, and in his spare time, he enjoys fishing, golfing, hunting and attending Auburn University sporting events. In addition to his involvement with the Lee County Red Cross and Storybook Farm, Marty and his family are members of Farmville Baptist Church in Auburn.

Center. The night consisted of a champagne reception, a

silent auction with trips provided by AmFund, a seated

dinner, a live auction and entertainment by the Kidd Blue

Band. Guest speakers for the event were cancer survivors

The 11th Annual Swing for Diabetes golf tournament was held on Tuesday,

October 22, 2019. The event was held at the Auburn University Club with 25

teams participating. Like before, the event was hosted by two former Auburn

University and professional athletes with Type 1 diabetes – Kendall Simmons

and Diana Ramage. Area restaurants and vendors set up throughout the golf

course to serve snacks and drinks to golfers. Event organizers Paige Kahn

and Amie Hardin were grateful for this year’s sponsors: 360 Realty, Brasfield

and Gorrie, Annie Williams – Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, CenterState

Bank, Builders First Source and Glynn Smith Chevrolet. Congratulations to all

involved for raising $25,575.24 to benefit the Diabetes & Nutrition Center Fund

that assists indigent patients with diabetes in our community. This year’s event

will be held on Tuesday, October 20 at the AU Club. For more information,

SWING FOR DIABETES 2019

In 2019, EAMC employees donated more than $60,000 to the Foundation

through the HERO (Healthcare Employees Reaching Out) campaign. Donors

can elect to make a payroll-deducted contribution or a one-time donation

to HERO, and those monies are divided between eight underserved patient

funds: CPAP Assistance Fund, Diabetes & Nutrition Fund, Outpatient Cardiac

Rehab Fund, HealthPlus Assistance Fund, Level II Nursery Fund, Patient Crisis

Fund, Psychiatry Fund and the Transition Fund. Thank you, EAMC employees!

MENDThe MEND organization held an Art Auction

benefitting the March disaster relief fund. The

event was held August 13, 2019, at the Jule

Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn

University. Guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, a

silent auction and a live auction. All proceeds

from sold artwork totaled over $79,000.

A R T A U C T I O N

Breast cancer survivors, patients and their families

did not let rain dampen their spirits at the 15th annual

Think Pink Walk. The celebration and walk were held on

Saturday, October 19 at the newly opened Spencer Cancer

Center. The event was initially supposed to take place in

the parking lot, but rainy weather forced it indoors – and

what a celebration it was! Vendors set up alongside the

main hallway, and there was a photo booth for attendees

to enjoy. Breast Health Navigator, Karen Calton, and her

team led the walk throughout the hallways and rooms of

the cancer center with each person donning pink gear.

After the walk was over, guests and their families joined in

on a dance party with DJ Ozz, a favorite local disc jockey.

The event promoted breast cancer and general health awareness, and a portion of the proceeds was given to the EAMC Breast Health Fund.

2. ANOTHER BROKEN EGGOn Saturday, June 15, 2019, Another Broken Egg Café owners Ron and Teresa Schier hosted a Friends & Family event at the restaurant where guests enjoyed complimentary entrées in exchange for a donation to a local charity. All proceeds from this one-day event went to MEND and EAMC Foundation.

3. FIT TO FIGHTIn its 3rd year, Fit to Fight was held on Saturday, May 11 at the HealthPlus Fitness Center. Participants were able to enjoy a tour of the facility, free skin cancer screenings, free group fitness classes, free chair massages and a silent auction. The 1-Mile Celebration Walk took place after the morning activities and through the generosity of donors, over $7,500 was raised for the Goodson Oncology Wellness Program.

4. FARMVILLE BAPTIST CHURCH VBS DAYThe children of Farmville Baptist Church in Auburn raised money at a Vacation Bible School event on June 27, 2019. Proceeds were given to the E.L. Spencer, Jr. & Ruth Priester Spencer Cancer Center.

5. KATY SPENCER & BEAUTYCOUNTERKaty Spencer, local BeautyCounter consultant, along with a few of her fellow colleagues, wanted to give back to women undergoing breast cancer treatment. In October 2019, Katy and team raised over $3,000 and were able to fill 90 Pouches with Purpose. These pouches contained body lotion, hand cream, chapstick and lip gloss.

6. LEE COUNTY MEDICAL SOCIETYEach year, the Lee County Medical Society is generous enough to donate to the EAMC Foundation. The donation is used by EAMC Foundation to further the needs of each underserved fund at East Alabama Medical Center.

7. REHABWORKS 4 LIFEThe 2nd annual 5K and 1-mile fun run were held on May 18, 2019. Thanks to the participation of many, funds were raised for the EAMC Foundation and RehabWorks to be able to purchase small pieces of equipment to help with all types of therapies.

8. eLEVE: RIBBONS & ROSEOctober is breast cancer awareness month, and eLeve donated a portion of every bottle of eLeve Rosé sold during the month of October to EAMC and the Spencer Cancer Center. We were tickled pink!

9. SOUTHERN UNION STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGEIn early 2019, faculty and staff members of SUSCC participated in “Fight Like a Bison” – an event hosted by the SUSCC cheerleaders. EAMC Foundation and the Spencer Cancer Center were chosen as beneficiaries thanks to Tracey Crowley, cancer survivor and wife of EAMC employee, Gerry Crowley.

10. TOUGH 10 TOUGH 2The 20th Anniversary race was held on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at the Ogletree Village Shopping Center. Similar to last year, the event raised over $10,000 and benefits the breast health fund at EAMC.
