Dear Friends,

We are so excited here at Joyce Meyer Ministries because of some new things on the horizon! Perhaps you are also facing some new opportunity. Maybe it’s a promotion at work, you’re moving to a new city, or your ministry is getting started. Whatever it may be, it’s always important that we are “following the ark.” What do I mean by that? Well…sometimes we can hang on to old, stale situations in life, simply because they are familiar to us, and we’re really just afraid of getting into uncharted territory. And then there are times we can sense something new ahead of us and we just want to step right into it—before God’s time for us. Joshua 3:3 says, …When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God being borne by the Levitical priests, set out from where you are and follow it. The ark represents the anointing of God…the presence of God…the will of God. It’s very important for us to learn to follow the will of God and not our own will or the will of others. God has a plan for you and me, and the only way to see that plan unfold is to follow the ark, or the will of God, and not our flesh, not other people, not our emotions. The ark of the covenant of the Lord con-tained the Ten Commandments—the will of God. The children of Israel had this reminder before them of what they were supposed to do. It also contained manna—a reminder of the miraculous provision of the Lord. You and I

need to remember that whatever God’s will is for our lives, He will provide the way for us to accomplish it. That brings me to the exciting change I mentioned earlier. We are ministering to more and more people every day. Lately, we have sensed God’s leading to enhance our methods of communication with friends and partners of the ministry. That will mean a change in our mailing schedule. Instead of a monthly Enjoying Everyday Life magazine, those of you on our mailing list will start to receive eight issues throughout the year. We will continue publishing inspiring ministry and guest articles, providing outreach updates and information, and offering helpful resources for your spiritual growth. However, we will also be sending you other powerful mailings that will educate you about ministry happenings…update you on ministry outreaches…stimulate your ministry vision. We are so excited about this! God is taking us higher, and we want to take you with us! Be on the lookout…we’ll keep you posted…because change is in the air!

God bless you,

BOLD: to be brave, daring, courageous, intrepid, valiant.

GOD IS CALLING US TO BE BOLD, because He hasn’t given us a spirit of fear, but of power. He’s given us permission to fearlessly, confidently, and boldly draw near to the throne of grace. Ephesians 3:12 encour-ages us to …dare to have the boldness (courage and confidence) of free access (an unreserved approach to God with freedom and without fear). This means we can go into the presence of God anytime we feel like it. We can go 200 times a day if we want to go, with an “in and out” type of privilege. God doesn’t even tell us we have to knock on the door or wait for someone to say, “Come in.”

Suppose you have a friend who says, “You know what? You can come over anytime you want to come. You don’t even have to knock because you are welcome anytime, day or night. Just come on in!” We would probably be like, “Wow!” Just think…God is saying it to us, unreserv-edly, which means we don’t have to be careful or hesitate or wonder if we’ve worn out our welcome. It means even if we make some mis-takes or did things we shouldn’t have done, maybe even an hour earlier, we can repent of our sins, be cleansed in the blood of Jesus, and go boldly to His throne. We can go dar-ingly and ask God to meet our needs, the needs of others, and to work through us to impact the world.

Gifted to Be BoldThe Bible tells us that God gives us gifts, but it’s up to us what we do with them. And God is going to ask for an account of what we did with what He gave us. I don’t want to be like the man in Matthew 25 who buried his talents because he was afraid that God was a hard taskmaster. There are many people who are so stinking afraid of making a mistake that they don’t do anything. Instead, they sit around saying,

“What if I’m wrong?” Do you know what God told me one time? He said, “If you miss me, I’ll find you.”

God is calling us to be bold, because He hasn’t given us a spirit of fear, but of POWER.

If we are wandering off somewhere and not sure where we are, we can just lift up our hands and say, “Jesus, come and get me! I’m confused. I don’t know what I’m doing anymore. Somewhere back over there I thought I was making the right decision, but I obviously made a wrong one, because now I’ve got things all messed up.”

What’s most important to God is relation-ship, not performance. My performance is not great all the time, but I have one thing in my favor. I love God. (Whoo!) I love the Lord. I am radically, insanely in love with Jesus.

Keep Pressing OnGod knows that we cannot be perfect, so He sent a perfect sacrifice for us. Now we’re pressing toward the mark of perfection. The

apostle Paul said, …I press on to lay hold…but one thing I do [it is my one aspiration]: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead (Philippians 3:12,13). He says “press” because the devil will try to stop us every step of the way, and probably the number one tool he uses is fear. We’re afraid of making a mistake or looking silly. We’re afraid of being judged or criticized. We’re afraid of failing or getting laughed at. And we’re afraid that maybe it’s not exactly

what God wants us to do. Afraid, afraid, afraid! All fear accomplishes in our lives is to totally stop our progress. We can be going along, serving God, doing good, stepping out in faith and then all of a sudden, without there being

any justification for it, we’ll have a day or week when we have an attack on our mind about

fear. That’s when we need to say what 2 Corinthians 10:4,5 says: The weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood], but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruc-

tion of strongholds, [Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God…. What we need to fight the devil with is the Word. We need to rehearse what God says to us. Then when fear comes against us, instead of lying down under it and saying, “I’m afraid,” we can say, God has not given me a spirit of fear… (2 Timothy 1:7 NLT). It’s a mistake to repeat anything the devil says to us. We can learn from people like David and Joshua in the Old Testament who kept saying repeatedly, “I will not fear.” I believe they were

Zameena S. Guyana

I am thirty-two years old and have two children, and I need your prayer for my family. Joyce, I have been watching your show here in Guyana for months, and I have learned so much. My children and I never miss your show. They love it too. Whenever you pray on TV for people all around the world, we get down on our knees and pray with you. I never had a very good married life. My hus-band was cheating on me and abusing me during

the first year of our marriage. Even after that, I have learned to never give up for my kids. I have stayed strong for them. I was a Muslim girl. I would keep up with all my fasting and praying, but I never understood the religion. One day I turned on the TV and watched your show. I never felt so good in my life. I know I made the right choice now and that I am saved. Because of your show, I am now a Christian.

God knows that we cannot be perfect, so He sent a PERFECT sacrifice for us.

We need to try being more honest with people and with God, because we can even try to put on airs with God. For example, one time I was trying to repent and doing a lousy job of it. I said, “Oh Lord, forgive me, I missed it.” Do you know what He said? “Missed what?” God already knows everything we’ve done. Instead of saying to God that I had been jealous of a friend who had received something that I wanted and hadn’t received, I just tried to skirt the issue by saying, “I missed it.” What I should have said is, “I’ve sinned by being jealous of my friend and it’s wrong. I ask you to forgive me of jealousy.” We need to stop living in fear of making mistakes, because we will make mistakes, period. God is not asking us to not make any mistakes. He’s calling us to be bold—fearless in approaching Him, in stepping out in faith, and in trusting Him to lead us. E

being attacked by fear, feeling it, and warring against it by saying, “I will not fear!” We don’t have to live in fear because God is with us.

What’s the Big deal?We can care too much about what people think of us to the point where it totally immobilizes us and we are petrified about looking wrong. But think about it. What’s the big deal? Maybe we’ve made mistakes or missed God and think the whole world is going, “Oh, oh, oh, you missed God!” Do you know what? I think if we are more truthful, we will actually get more respect than we do by trying to hide everything and pretend we’re perfect. I believe one of the main reasons people like to listen to me is because I tell all my junk. It helps them to relax, to relate to me, and offers them hope that if I can do some of the things I’ve done and make it, so can they.

Enduring a flooded home was not new to Gladys. Here in Pacific, she had lived through two other floods, and each time her home required significant repairs. And now, at seventy-five years old and dealing with diabetes, facing it all over again was simply overwhelming. She was standing at the threshold of another major project. But what Gladys and Lonnie didn’t know was they were not alone.

love in actionIt’s a dreary, cold morning, and throughout Pacific, groups of people in orange shirts can be seen coming down the street, knocking on doors and beginning to help residents clean up. As far as anyone knew, they weren’t city workers. But as the day went on, word got out that they had come to help—for free. This past spring, Joyce Meyer Ministries partnered with the relief organization Service International to help the town of Pacific, Missouri, clean up, rebuild and recover. That first day, more than 280 volunteers showed up to help remove flooring, rip out Sheetrock and cabinetry, clean up debris and prepare for reconstruction. We immediately impacted eigh-

It rained for nearly thirty-six hours straight. With 1993’s “Flood of the Century” still fresh in their minds, Lonnie L. helped pack up his mom, Gladys, as they watched the Meramec River continue to rise. Her belongings would go in storage, and Gladys would go to live with her son. But the question was: What would they find when they came back? Over the course of just a couple days this past March, a foot of rain drenched the U.S. Midwest, causing rivers from Texas to Ohio to swell and leaving hundreds of homes and businesses underwater. Many parts of Missouri were hit especially hard…including Gladys’ hometown of Pacific. When Gladys and Lonnie returned, they discovered a flooded basement and eighteen inches of standing water on the main floor. They knew immediately that the house would need to be completely gutted.

We’re Here to Help by Chad Trafton and Kacie Campbell

Since 2004, when the notorious 100-foot tsunami waves first crashed the shores of India and Sri Lanka, Joyce Meyer Ministries has made a commitment to bring lifesaving assistance to people in disaster situations—offering help and hope during times of crisis. From tornadoes, cyclones and hurricanes…to earthquakes, fires and floods…to international incidents of rioting and civil unrest…our friends and partners have made it possible for us to be there when it matters the most…

teen different locations…including the home of Gladys L. “We’re here to bring hope and we’re here to restore this fam-ily’s home—to give them some faith and show them that people really do care,” says Larry B., Crew Chief for Gladys’ home. Seeing our crew instantly gave them new hope. They were also amazed. For Gladys and Lonnie, the fact that we would do all of this just to help them out was almost too good to be true. “It seems like they’ve become a part of our family,” says Lonnie.

“They’ve got family they could be with, but they choose to be here. That’s what Service International is. They come into your com-munity and say, ‘Let me be your brother for a couple of days…let me be your friend and help you get through this.’” After the first two weeks alone, our teams had made an in-credible impact, donating more than 7,000 working hours and affecting over 110 homes and businesses, as well as helping to clean up city parks. In addition to providing aid to those who need it, our teams also offer to pray for the home and each member of the family. Our mission is about so much more than lifting a hammer and nails. Our relief efforts lift people’s spirits and show them that actions truly do speak louder than words. “There are a lot of people here that don’t have flood insurance and they really need the help,” shares Clint B., one of thirty-two crew chiefs working in Pacific. “We just want to come and bring hope and some peace of mind to the homeowners who are feeling desperate and don’t have anywhere to turn.” And for each and every plumber, electrician, carpenter and willing heart who volunteers, there is a recipient who is over-whelmed with gratitude.

“I could say ‘thank you’ but it doesn’t seem like enough,” says Lonnie. “There are no words to describe how appreciative we are.” Over the past four years, we have joined forces with Service International to bring life-saving help to tens of thousands in need. For instance, in the months and years that followed Hurricane Katrina, our partnership has ac-complished the seemingly impossible, repairing or rebuilding more than 850 homes along the coast! And last year, when a massive tornado ripped through the community of Greensburg, Kansas, our rapid response teams immediately showed up with Bobcats, chainsaws and other equipment to help remove debris and assist the families who were affected. And we know our efforts are so much more than just providing cleanup crews. At the heart of everything we do is the desire to reach others. And for every home or business we see de-stroyed, there are people—people like Brad and Karen T.—who desperately need help…

california WildfiresBrad and Karen had lived in Green Valley Lake for years. Located in California’s San Bernardino National Forest, it was arguably one of the most beautiful spots in America. But last

and businesses after the flooding in Pacific, Missouri.

Page 12: JoyceMeyer Magagine 2008 08

From providing vital necessities like food, water and blankets, to cleaning up and hauling away massive amounts of debris, to offering comfort and spiritual support, our teams were able to reach out to Brad and Karen and so many other families trying to recover from the devastating wildfires. “It really helped us to heal at the time we were grieving and when you feel like you’ve lost everything,” Karen says. “Knowing there are people out there that care about you really renews your faith. It helped us heal and move forward.”

Hurricane felixSince 2005, the incredible support of our friends and partners has enabled us to donate well over $7 million to disaster relief efforts—and not just in one or two nations. Using the network of our fifteen international offices and partnerships with more than forty ministries and relief organizations, God has given us the privilege of being able to reach people all over the world. Last year, your support allowed us to be there when a violent hurricane threatened the lives of thousands in Central America… Hurricane Felix had been on a collision course for days. Then, on the morning of September 4, 2007, just after being upgraded to category five, it battered Honduras and Nicaragua just south of their border in a region historically known as the Mosquito Coast. In the end, Felix took the lives of 133 and left tens of thousands without homes, requiring even the most basic necessities. For years, Joyce Meyer Ministries has partnered with Dan Salas Ministries to spread the Gospel in Central America and reach its people through humanitarian efforts. So in September, we joined hands once again to bring immediate help to Nicaragua. Focusing our efforts on the village of Krukira, our team first met with local pastors to determine their greatest needs. “I was amazed at the amount of destruction—but even more amazed that so little had been done to help these people,” says Dan Salas. “Nearly every tin roof had been destroyed, leaving the

year in late October, when wildfires broke out in California, they were naturally concerned. By November 9, the fires had been contained, but only after completely destroying at least 1,500 homes. Brad and Karen’s was one of them. “We’ve been married thirty years and lost everything in the fire,” says Karen. Last fall, Joyce Meyer Ministries teamed with Service International to bring critical relief to families like theirs. Our rapid-relief trailers arrived on the scene in the mountains of San Bernardino and immediately went to work. “My husband was just saying how he could sure use some help right about now, and that’s when we saw a person drive up and ask if we needed assistance,” says Karen. “We told him that we couldn’t afford to pay anyone and the guys from Service International said, ‘No, we’re here to help.’ These guys are like angels.” For Brad and Karen, who were tired, still grieving, and facing the monumental task of clearing away what was left of their precious family home, this meant the world. They had known what it’s like to be on the giving end…in recent years, they had spent a lot of their time and money renting out apartments at low rates to cancer patients from the local hospital. But now they were the ones in need, and they felt the comfort and relief of having someone to offer support. “The men and women from Service Inter national were with us for a couple of months,” says Karen.

“They would work long hours, starting at sunup, and the women would make everyone lunch, including my husband and son. One day, one of the ladies called me and said that since we had found some-where to live, she would be willing to go shopping with me and help me find pots and pans and towels. They really went above and beyond.”

Hurricane Felix left tens of thousands without homes; Our help was an answer to prayer for this

Krukira pastor and his wife.

2,500 people in the village scrambling to rebuild. Power lines were down and children were playing on the cables. We saw homes destroyed, wells contaminated, sick children, and very little food.” Within days, we showed up with more than four tons of food, including rice, flour, beans, powdered milk, and cooking oil, along with cooking supplies. This food was freely distributed to the needy and helped sustain them through the difficult recovery period. We also brought in medical supplies to treat dehydration, infec-tions, parasites, and other serious needs. Finally, to help them begin rebuilding their lives, we hauled a truckload of roofing tin, hammers, nails, and tools of all kinds.

Dan says that for the people of Krukira, our support meant everything: “One local pastor told us, ‘Just this morning I was praying to the Lord and I said, “We have little or no food left. What are we going to do?”’ That afternoon we pulled up in our truck with four tons of food and supplies. I think his smile says it all.” (See photo below.) After showing them the love of God, our team then got a chance to tell them about it. After distributing the supplies, the people of Krukira were invited to come watch an evening showing of The Jesus Film, presented in their native Miskitu language. Hundreds attended the movie, with many giving their lives to Christ. “One person told me that after the hurricane hit, several ministries came and took pictures just like we did…but the differ-ence was that we returned,” says Dan. “I would like to say thanks to the friends and partners of Joyce Meyer Ministries. I have the

privilege of seeing firsthand the people on the other end—those who receive the help—and you are truly making a difference.”

at a Moment’s noticeOne of the greatest acts of love is to reach out and help those who need it, when they need it. And through our ongoing disaster relief efforts worldwide, you are helping us to do just that. Within the last year alone, your support has placed us at the very scene of several major occurrences… In November, when a powerful cyclone struck the southwest coast of Bangladesh, leaving millions homeless, you made it possi-ble for us to provide temporary housing, along with lifesaving food, water and vital necessi-ties for thousands. When a recent presidential election in Kenya led to rioting and ethnic fighting, you allowed us to offer critical refuge and support to hundreds of displaced families and children. And most recently, after a category four cyclone devastated Myanmar and a massive earthquake shook southwest China, your support has enabled us to send doctors and relief teams, along with critical food and medical sup-plies, into the very heart of the disaster areas. Friends and partners, thank you for your compassionate, ongoing support that has made every one of these missions a reality. In the midst of so much pain and trauma, you have thrown a lifeline of hope, help and God’s in-credible love to these precious people. It is because of your support that we can rush to

meet their most serious needs. It is because of you that we can say, “We’re here to help.” E

If the United States were arrested for being a Christian nation, would there be enough evidence to convict her? The answer is a re-sounding “Yes!” Although some historians and politicians wish to rewrite America’s godly heritage, the evidence is apparent and remarkably visible to those who take the time to look, especially within our nation’s capital. Probably nowhere in America is our Judeo-Christian heritage more evident than in Washington D.C.—the forefront battleground of today’s culture war. It’s ironic that when members of the Senate enter their chamber to have another debate on church and state definitions, they walk right under a display above the main door to the Senate that reads “In God We Trust.” Or, while our Supreme Court judges listen to another case from a special interest group attempting to tear down a display of the Ten Commandments, they are hearing the arguments in a struc-ture that houses three displays of the Ten Commandments—two inside the building and one on the outside. But the Supreme Court building is just one example… Among the many sparkling struc-tures, one finds an ample number of words and phrases that give recognition or praise to the God of the Christian Bible. These ex-pressions were deliberately carved in stone or displayed in bronze or in paintings for our posterity. These edifices testify to America’s Judeo-Christian foundation, just as the ancient ruins of Greece testify to their past worship of other gods. We know that most of those in-strumental in shaping our nation were devout Christians. A few may have been marginal, but they had a biblical worldview that was tolerant of Christianity, and not hostile. Their leadership enabled our heritage to be etched in granite or shaped in marble, depending on which sacred national monument you happen to be visiting. We hope that the limited information within these pages will give you an idea of how preva-

lent the godly references are among the monuments of our capital. Let’s take a look at some of them:

The library of congressWe are blessed to have the largest library in the world, where millions of books, manuscripts, photographs, maps and record-ings are stored. The Library of Congress started from an act of Congress in 1800 and was originally located in the Capitol build-ing. In 1814, invading British troops burned the building, and all of the library’s original books were destroyed. Fortunately, Thomas Jefferson sold his personal collection of 6,487 books to Congress, which rejuvenated the library to become what it is today. This renowned building opened its doors to the people in 1897.1

Inside the Library of Congress, two Bibles are prominently displayed—the Gutenberg Bible and Giant Bible of Mainz. Two Bible verses can be found inscribed on the ceiling and walls of this beautiful building:

The light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehendeth not. John 1:5

Wisdom is the principal thing therefore get wisdom and with all thy getting, get understanding. Proverbs 4:7

In the Main Reading Room, you will find eight large statues representing eight categories of knowledge. The statues of Moses and Paul represent Religion, with the inscription, “What doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, And to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy God." Micah 6:8

Science has the inscription, The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth His handywork. Psalm 19:12

The supreme court BuildingThe home of the highest court in the land was built between 1932 and 1935 and was designed by noted architect Cass Gilbert. Isn’t it ironic today, when our Supreme Court convenes on a case involving the legalities of church and state, that right outside the windows, on the East Pediment of the building, there is a marble depiction of Moses holding tablets containing the Ten Commandments?3

At the entrance to the courtroom, on the majestic oak doors, you will notice engravings of the Roman numerals I through X on two tablets, symbolizing the Ten Commandments.

Inside the courtroom, above the place where the justices sit, is a marble relief of a large stone tablet with a list of Roman numerals I through X, once again representing the Ten Commandments.4

The capitol BuildingThe impressive Capitol building has been the home of the legislative branch for over 200 years. Both the House and the Senate reside here. The initial construction of this building began in 1793 and has expanded over time. Along the halls and within the chambers of this architectural achievement, you can find many acknowledgments of God.5

In the Rotunda hang eight paintings—three of which are Christian. One is a depiction of the landing of Christopher Columbus, whom historical records show was first and foremost interested in spreading the Gospel in the “new world.” The second painting is a depiction of Pocahontas being bap-tized. She was one of America’s first converts. And the third painting shows the Pilgrims preparing to leave Holland for America. They’re seen observing a day of prayer and fasting. William Brewster can be seen holding a Bible with

“The New Testament of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” shown on it. On the ship’s sail are the words “God With Us.” In the Rotunda is also another carved relief of the Pilgrims’ landing—with the inscription, “having undertaken for the Glory of God and advancement of the Christian faith.” “In God We Trust,” our national motto, is inscribed in letters of gold behind the Speaker’s rostrum. Above the central Gallery door, there is a marble relief of Moses, who is displayed as the greatest of twenty-three recog-nized law-givers. In 1867, the largest church congregation met in the Capitol. From its inception, churches have used the building as a meeting place. Throughout the Capitol, many statues of early leaders are displayed. Of those depicted, many were not only Christians but actual ministers—George Washington, James Garfield, Samuel Adams, Rev. Peter Muhlenberg, Rev. Roger Williams, Rev. Marcus Whitman, Daniel Webster, Lew Wallace, Rev. Jason Lee, John Winthrop, Rev. Jonathan Trumbull, Roger Sherman, and Francis Willard. There is a prayer room in the building with a stained-glass window showing Washington in prayer. “In God We Trust” is displayed above the Senate main door. The first message sent over the telegraph in 1844—“What hath God Wrought!”—is displayed on the Samuel F.B. Morse Plaque outside the old Supreme Court Chamber.6

The Washington MonumentThe Washington Monument is arguably America’s most dynamic commemoration. Built in the

likeness of an Egyptian obelisk, it was designed by Robert Mills, who was appointed architect and engineer to the federal govern-ment in 1836. Construction did not begin until 1848 and was not completed until 1884. The Washington Monument is a tribute to America’s first president and stands 555 feet tall, making it one of the tallest masonry structures in the world.7

A little known fact about this monument is what is engraved on the aluminum capstone, which is the very top of the structure: Laus Deo. This is Latin for “Praise be to God.” Several of the stones in the monument also have Bible verses or references to God carved in them, including “Holiness to the Lord,” “Search the Scriptures,” “The memory of the just is blessed,” “May Heaven to this union continue its beneficence,” “In God We Trust,” and “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”8

If you have not yet visited our nation’s capital, I would encourage you to do so. See for yourself how godly principles were liter-ally built into the foundational buildings of our country. Because even if the voices in America are silenced, the rocks will testify to the evi-dence of our Christian heritage. Laus Deo! E

The California wildfires of October 2007 were stark reminders of the horror that can be unleashed when the environment turns hostile. The clusters of fires were fanned by the Santa Ana winds, which swept westward across the California deserts and out to sea. The hot and dry winds gusted up to 100 mph in places, and for days, they made firefighting next to impossible. The rapidly advancing fires charred and blackened everything in their paths. Thousands had to flee their homes to escape the fires as blazes raged uncontrollably across the southern portion of the state. By the time the fires subsided, over a half-million acres had gone up in flames, more than 1,600 houses had burned down, and well over $1 billion of damage had been done. The tragic effects of the widespread fires will be felt in California for months, if not years. As evidenced by California's wildfires, when the natural environment goes haywire, every-one living within it suffers. Likewise, when leaders lose control of their environment, ev-eryone within the organization undergoes harm. It's critical for leaders to stay abreast of environmental factors in order to protect a healthy and secure workplace. Last month we looked at five questions leaders ask to create a winning environment. In this article we'll pick up where we left off by exploring five more questions posed by leaders concerned about the climates they are orchestrating.

Do I seek out barriers and remove them to make the team's job easier? Trailblazers remove tree limbs, boulders and overgrowth so that future travelers may safely navigate a path through the wilderness. Leaders are trailblazers. They go ahead of the pack to scout out barriers to progress. Leaders should be on the lookout for specific environmental hazards including lack of communication, cliques, distrust among team members, bad attitudes, underperformance and an unwilling-ness to change.Do I give people the freedom required to learn, grow and deliver? Only secure leaders give power to others. If a leader doesn't know his own—or his team’s—strengths and weaknesses, he will not hand off responsibilities to his team. The only way for the

team to grow is to allow them the freedom to learn from their successes and failures.Do I foster a culture of inclusion by hiring people who are different than I am? To a degree, we are all prisoners of our own perspectives. Trapped in the grid of our experiences and backgrounds, we are limited in our ability to see the world clearly. As a result, we must be purposeful in nurturing an environment of diversity. Within an organization, a few qualities must be held in common by all. These are values, vision and commitment to the team. However, in most areas, hiring for diversity is the wisest course of action. The strongest environments are inhabited by leaders with varied expertise, experiences, backgrounds and temperaments.Am I a consensus builder? Team leaders genuinely believe that they do not have all the answers; consequently, they do not insist on providing them. They believe they do not need to make all key decisions, so they do not. They believe they cannot succeed without the combined contributions of all the other members of the team, so they avoid any action that might constrain input or intimidate anyone on the team. Ego is not their predominant concern.have I created a caring environment among team members? When molding a collection of individuals into a team, a leader should endeavor to promote an environment of mutual care and concern. An illustration from an elementary school classroom explains this concept better than I could ever hope to do. Mr. Alter's fifth-grade class at Lake Elementary School made headlines when the boys in the class decided by themselves to shave their heads. They did so, without embarrassment, because one of their own, Ian O'Gorman, developed cancer and had undergone chemotherapy. His hair began to fall out. To make their friend feel at home, the boys agreed to shave their heads (with their parents' permission) so that upon his return, Ian would not stand out from the class. That way no one would know who the "cancer kid" was. The teacher, Mr. Alter, was so moved by the spirit of his class that he too shaved his head. Through the experience, Mr. Alter's class leaped the chasm of friendship and became the caring environment of a family.

Ultimately, a winning environment is established by a leader who thinks of his team higher than himself and encourages growth and productivity from each member. By addressing these questions, you are well on your way to having an effective and happy environment. This is going to be a great year for your child. By following these tips, your child will be able to enjoy a healthy, happy and successful school year.

Picking a BackpackWithout giving up the style factor, make sure that the backpack has wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back, and encourage your child to use both straps. Using only one strap can strain muscles and may even increase curvature of the spine. And pack lightly, using all the compartments. The backpack should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of the student’s body weight.1

if the shoe fitsShoes come in a wide variety of shapes and styles and sometimes speak as more of a fashion statement than anything else, but it is possible to look good and take care of your feet at the same time. More than anything make sure your child’s shoes fit properly. If not, your child may develop toe problems, ingrown toe-nails, hammer toes, calluses and bunions. Until their feet stop growing, kids tend to require new shoes every four to six months because of growth spurts.2

Shoes consist of four parts: the upper part, the insole, the outer sole and the heel. Children’s feet tend to perspire quite a bit, so the upper part should be made of a breathable material such as leather, canvas or a newer mesh. Although most children do not need them, special inserts provide extra cushioning to the insole. The outer sole provides traction, flexibility and cushion to the shoe. Avoid sticky or thick soles to prevent accidental falls. Younger children should wear flat shoes. Older children can wear heels, but they should be no higher than one inch.3

you are What you eatIf you want your child to be healthy, then start today showing them healthy options and teaching them not to skip meals, especially breakfast. I always tell my patients to eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper. It is highly important that your student has a good well-rounded breakfast before heading to school for the day. Studies show that children who eat breakfast are more alert in class. Most schools typically send a lunch menu home. Use this information to make sure to pack a lunch on the days when the meal is one your child might not choose to eat. This will ensure that your child always has a nutritious meal ready. As well as packing these items in your child’s lunch, you might also want to contact the school about having healthy options such as fresh fruit, low-fat dairy products, water and 100 percent fruit juice available in the vending machines. Try to steer clear of soda because each twelve-ounce soft drink contains approximately ten teaspoons of sugar and 150 calories.

Drinking just one can of soda a day increases a child’s risk of obesity by 60 percent.4

Time to count some sheepSleep is vital and essential to a child’s health and ability to learn. A child who receives a good night’s sleep is generally more alert, has a better memory and performs better. In order to maintain good sleep patterns for your child, it is important to establish a schedule and stick to it. A bedtime routine will help a child to relax, fall asleep and sleep continuously throughout the night. One example of a typical bedtime routine is (1) have a light snack, (2) take a bath, (3) put on pajamas, (4) brush teeth, (5) read a story, (6) make sure the room is quiet and at a comfortable temperature, (7) put your child to bed, and (8) pray with them, say goodnight and leave.5

With younger children, consistency is most important. Make sure that their bedtime is the same every night. This consistency will lessen the likelihood that your child will have trouble sleeping. Studies show that 37 percent of children, kindergarten through fourth grade, suffer from at least one sleep-related problem. If problems such as nightmares, night terrors or sleepwalking persist, be sure to visit with your child’s physician.6

What about teenagers? When a child enters their teen years, their sleeping patterns shift, making it more difficult to fall asleep earlier, usually before 11 p.m. They tend to need about 9.25 hours of sleep each night to function best. Getting less sleep than that can limit their ability to learn, listen, concen-trate or solve problems and can temporarily impair memory. A lack of sleep can also make a teenager more prone to pimples, lead to aggressive or inappropriate behavior, cause them to eat too much or eat unhealthy foods that lead to weight gain and contribute to illness.7

avoiding the fluWith so many children coming together to attend school, germs spread rapidly. The flu takes a big toll on children. Each year 20,000 children younger than five are hospitalized and nearly 100 die. During a bad flu season, as many as one in five kids may have to go to the doctor or visit the emergency room or an urgent care center for treatment.8 But there are some things you can do to help keep your child safe from the flu:• Get yourself and your loved ones vaccinated. • Encourage your children to cover their coughs and sneezes

and wash their hands often.• Keep your child home when they are sick. • Catch symptoms such as high fever, headache, exhaustion,

dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose and muscle aches early to help prevent your child from getting sicker.

Basic Health concernsGet a vision screening. It is important that your child have a yearly vision screening. If your child already wears glasses, be sure to keep the prescription current.Have your child’s hearing screened. If you notice that your child listens to the television or music at a very loud volume or tends to favor one ear over the other when listening to you speak, it may be a sign of hearing loss. Have you noticed your child scratching his or her scalp? This may be a sign that your child has contracted lice. Head lice doesn’t go away on its own but can be easily treated with over-the-counter medications. Are their immunizations up-to-date? Schools require that your child have up-to-date im-munizations. If you have recently moved from one state to another or are not sure whether your child is up-to-date, check with your pediatrician.Does your child take regular medications? Make sure to talk with the school nurses and teachers about any medical needs your child may have, especially if they are administering the medicine to your child.

Have a great year!By taking care of these health concerns, your child will be able to focus on studying hard and enjoying time with friends. This is going to be your child’s best year yet! Growing up as Christians in the 70s and 80s, we had our share of immoral things that were thrown our way. But what a different world we live in now! Today, our children have so much to try and avoid, it’s scary. And the truth is, they can’t avoid it all. Children need to be equipped with biblical ethics so they know what to do when faced with decisions they have to make for themselves.

God never intended for the church or Christian schools to bring the majority of moral training to our children. His intent was for parents to play the major role in training their kids. You are to write these commandments that I've given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night… (Deuteronomy 6:6,7 The Message). Today, society promotes the idea that there really isn’t a right or wrong—that values are different for every person. This is a world view, not a Christian view. For Christians, the Bible should be the standard by which we measure ourselves. And it is full of wisdom for raising our kids. Here are some training essentials that all parents can put into practice:

Make your Marriage the Priority relationship of the family Why is it that when we find that special person we want to spend the rest of our lives with, they become the number one relationship in our life, but as soon as children enter the picture, they become the center of the family and we forget about the marriage relationship? We stop doing all of the things we did as a couple. All of our focus and energy go to our children for the next

eighteen years. And then they move out and we are left with a spouse that we don’t know anymore. Yes, we do this in the name of love for the children’s sake, but one of the greatest gifts parents can give their children—in the name of love—is the confidence that Mom and Dad really do love each other. Child-centered parenting fosters selfishness and independence instead of a humble, “think-ing-of-others-first” attitude. Romans 12:10 says,

…honor one another above yourselves (NIV). Your kids probably won’t tell you this until they are older but what they really want is to know that Mom and Dad love each other and that their marriage relationship is good. Keeping the marriage the priority of the family will help protect against child-centered parenting. So how can we practically begin to turn things around? Here are a few suggestions:• Spend uninterrupted time with your spouse in front of the

children each day and make it a habit. Tell the kids they are not allowed to interrupt during this time unless it’s an emergency. This is time you and your spouse can spend talking or reading together. If you are a single parent, we encourage you to have your personal time with the Lord in front of your children, also telling them they may not interrupt.

• Some children might pull on you at first because they have been used to getting all the attention until now. Just tell them that you will spend time with them after you spend time together. You may be pleasantly surprised at the positive results that follow.

• Have a date night on a regular basis. Get a babysitter and tell the kids Mom and Dad are going out because we love each other. Single parents can go out with a friend or go out to have some alone time.

• Find a way to minister as a family with your kids. Your church will usually have opportunities for you to reach out to the community. This will cause your kids to start thinking of others more, and they will be happier for it.

• Continue with your other relationships that you had before you had children. Just because you are now a mother doesn’t mean you stop being a daughter, a son, a sister, a brother or a friend.

One single mom’s son was having problems in school. After realizing she was being a child-centered parent, she apologized to her son for making him the center of her universe. She explained to him how things were going to be different in their family from now on. Not long after this, his teacher asked, “What has happened to your son. He is like a different person.” It truly does make a difference in your child.

Heart TrainingWe need to train our children from a very early age not just how to

act morally, but how to think morally, by placing godly values in their hearts. In order to do this, we need to go to God’s Word and make sure the values are in us first so we can pass them on to our kids. It’s our job as parents to “write” these godly values on our children’s hearts—to fill up their moral warehouse. As a result, they will have godly morals that they can pull from their moral warehouse when they are ready to leave home and face hard situations on their own. On the other hand, it is dangerous to raise a child who is robotic in nature—they don’t know why they believe what they believe. It is heartbreak-ing for parents if after raising their children in a Christian home, the children go off to college and six months later turn completely away from God. This is why it is so crucial that we reach the hearts of our children, not just their ears.

When situations arise, take the time to show your children the why behind what you are telling them to do or believe. Here is a great recent example that a mother shared with us. She was watching something on television with her kids. She realized that it was not going to be good for them to continue watching. She said, normally they would have whined about it and thrown a fit. But instead of just telling them, “You can’t watch this,” she took the time to get her Bible and sit down and share with them why this particular show would not be good for them. She said after she did this they said, “Oh, okay.” Later when they were watch-ing TV, she noticed from the next room that when the same show came back on, they made the decision on their own to turn the channel to something else. Another great example involves one of our daughters who always likes to be first in line at gymnastics. We suggested to her that it would be a great way to let her light shine for Jesus if sometimes she would choose to let all the other children go before her. That night at gymnastics,

she cut in line in front of another kid and immediately looked up at us. She then got out of line and let all the others go first. It was so interesting that at five years old her conscience was telling her that she did something wrong. But what if we had not taken the time to place the value in her moral warehouse? Would her conscience have accused her that she was going in the wrong direction? Giving the reason why instead of just saying, “No” or “You shouldn’t do that,” will help your children make the right decisions later on when Mom and Dad are not around to tell them what to do. Don’t forget to encourage, encourage, encourage your kids when they do choose wisely. Make sure you let them know you are proud of them. Tonight one of our daughters received a consequence for doing something unkind to our other daughter. After a short time, she came to us to say she was sorry and to get a hug. We could tell she was truly repentant for making a poor choice. She then went on her own to apologize to her sister and ask for her forgiveness. We said to each other, “Now that is

when we know we are reaching the heart of our child.” Another reason we see problems show up when our children are older is because Mom and Dad are saying one thing at church but modeling something else at home. We need

to be consistent role models for our children. If we are not, they just may go looking for their role models in wrong places. As you can see, biblical parenting takes time but the rewards are everlasting. Someday when we stand before God, we will want to hear Him speak the words, “Well done!” And if you are thinking, Well I have already royally messed up. What do I do now?, don’t despair. We believe children have such a deep love for their parents that they are willing to forgive more than we adults are many times. We always go to our children if we have reacted toward them in an ungodly way and immedi-ately apologize and ask them to forgive us. This just makes them respect us all the more.

The Grace of GodNo matter how many tools we have gained for proper parenting, we must always remember that none of them replace the grace of God and the wisdom that the Holy Spirit gives if we will just take the time to ask for it.

Steve and Sandra McCollom have twin girls and a passion to see the family unit strengthened. They are leaders of Growing Kids God’s Way parenting classes at their church and have seen firsthand how helpful it is for parents when they learn about biblical parenting concepts. Sandra, Joyce’s younger daughter, is a stay-at-home mom, and Steve works full-time with Joyce Meyer Ministries.

Have you ever felt like you missed out on some-thing great? Sometimes out of fear, laziness, passivity, irresponsibility, or wrong thinking, we can miss out on opportunities that God puts in front of us.

opportunities are knocking

ENJOY ING EVERYDAY L I F E

The devil doesn’t miss any opportunities to torment us, cause us problems, or make us miserable. He certainly takes every op-portunity he gets to do evil. But we don’t have to miss out. We can learn to take every op-portunity God puts in front of us to do good, to be a blessing to people, and to experience promotion in life. In Ephesians 5:15 it says, Look carefully then how you walk!... I think we do need to be a little more careful than we are at how we walk. Not that we have to be so careful that we live in fear, but careful in a godly way, not in a legalistic way. Because if we’re not careful about who our friends are, what television pro-grams and movies we watch, what kind of books we read, what kind of music we listen to, how we spend our money, and what we do with our time, we could end up living wasted lives. There are too many Christians who are living carnal lives, which means they call themselves Christians, probably go to church, but live fleshly, selfish, and self-centered lives.

live carefullyNot enough Christians pursue holiness—a Christian life—or realize that they are sanctified, which means being set apart for God’s use. The minute we accept Christ as our Savior, we are sanctified by the Holy Spirit and set apart for a purpose. If we’re not fulfilling our purpose or if we’re not pursuing our purpose, we’re going to feel empty and frustrated. Feeling this way can lead us to become aggravated, hard to get along with and always finding something wrong with everything and everyone. But the root of the problem many times is that we’re just not doing what we’re supposed to be doing. It’s important to remember that when we talk about living carefully, we’re not talking about living in fear. Second Peter 3:14 tells us, …be eager to be found by Him [at His coming] without spot or blemish…. When Christ comes back, He wants to find us free from fear, walking in faith. So many times when God is calling us to do something, calling us to come up higher, we let

the devil talk us out of the opportunities that God is putting in front of us. It’s important for us to remember that God is never trying to hurt us or take anything away from us. He’s always trying to lift us up and make our lives better. Because He is, we especially don’t want to miss opportunities. I believe that many times when God is calling us into something, we start to take steps of faith, but then the enemy begins to lie to us, putting questions into our mind like, What if it doesn’t work? What if I fail? What if I get hurt? Many people sit in church afraid to get in-volved because they’re thinking if they get involved, they could get taken advantage of or hurt. Or if they start helping, they’ll be asked to do everything. By faith, we can learn how to say yes and how to say no. Faith gives us expectancy and hope. It helps us to look for something good, to believe that we have value and that God is using us. All of us want to hear from God, but most of us won’t even take a step of faith to find out if we’re really hearing from Him. We need to take the attitude that we’re going to go forward with God unless He tells us to stop. We do need to pray and seek God, but we don’t have to sit around and pray for six months over every little thing. Sometimes the only thing we can do is try it. Just try it. Let’s stop listening to the lies of the devil and stop letting him steal from us anymore. When we have opportunities, let’s take them.

don’t check common sense at the doorEphesians 5:15 continues with, …Live purpose-fully and worthily and accurately, not as the unwise and witless, but as wise, (sensible, intelligent people). The Bible says that we are to have our minds renewed—not removed. (See Ephesians 4:23.) But there are some Christians who just lack common sense. We don’t need to live as unwise, witless and senseless people. Rather, we can use wisdom in everything we do. Additionally, verse 16 in Ephesians 5 encour-ages us to make the most of our time because we don’t want to be wasting our time. I believe that in every twenty-four-hour period, we have an opportunity. Isn’t it amazing that some people

accomplish nothing in life and some accomplish so much, yet we all have the same amount of time? None of us are going to get more or less than twenty-four hours a day. It’s also interesting that when an opportu-nity comes in front of us, we can say, “Well I just don’t have the time.” But it’s not about not having enough time—it’s about what we choose to do with our time.

Time ManagementThis week why don’t we have a little meeting with the Holy Spirit and write down what we’re spend-ing our time doing. Then we can look at where the majority of our time is being spent and ask ourselves, “Is this bearing fruit for me or for the kingdom of God? Is this what I’m really supposed to be doing?” I’ll be the first to admit that there were years when I worked too hard and spent too much time trying to build the ministry. We need to be very careful to spend our time on the things that really have value—the things God wants us to spend our time on. We don’t want to miss out on the op-portunities God is putting before us that will not only lift us higher, but also be a blessing to those around us. Ephesians 5:16 tells us to make the very most of [our] time [buying up each opportunity], because the days are evil. Let’s not miss opportunities to be a blessing to someone by being a friend or building someone up. Find time to compliment or put a smile on someone’s face. Take the time to look for ways to make a stranger feel comfortable. We have as much time as everyone else—it’s just a matter of what we do with it. E

My life had turned upside down and was in complete turmoil. I had lost my job and my mother. It was during this time that God introduced me to Joyce through the Enjoying Everyday Life television show. As I was switching the channel, I heard that unique, God-given voice sharing what it really means to wait on God and trust Him no matter what’s going on around you. It felt as if she was talking right to me. After losing my mother, I assumed primary caretaker responsibilities for my dad. Thankfully, I have been blessed with good home health care services. And although it has been extremely tough, the Lord blessed me with Joyce and her teachings at a time when I had no one to talk to and all I could do was cry. Several resources have been invaluable tools for me, especially Pressing In and Pressing On. It has taught me to keep pressing forward and not let my circumstances get the best of me. The greatest news is that I have recently accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and have started reading A New Way of Living. I now have faith that I will find a job soon and will be able to move forward slowly with God at the controls. I don’t know what God’s plans for me are, but I know that they are good and that I belong to Him and He loves me. Thanks to Joyce Meyer Ministries, I have renewed faith and hope, and I see a light at the end of this dark tunnel. I am getting stronger every day through Christ.

Pressing In and Pressing On

Shateem,

Don’t be discouraged if it takes a little time to remove those old habits and thoughts brought on by that type of music. If you listened to bad music with words about sex, fighting, guns and killing for a long time, they have consumed your think-ing patterns. If you continue listening to the right things, you will be able to totally renew your way of thinking. When those wrong thoughts enter your mind, you can choose to not continue thinking them (or cast them down) and replace them with positive thoughts.

In the beginning of our walk with God, we all feel that renewing the mind is a total battle, and we wonder if we will ever be free from consuming thoughts. I can prom-ise you that it will get better and better as time goes by. Don’t fall into a trap of feeling defeated every time you recognize a bad thought. The good news is that you are now recognizing them as a problem and you want to change.

The Bible says that God changes us as we continue in His Word—but it happens from glory to glory to glory (see 2 Corinthians 3:18). In other words it is a process that takes place in varying degrees. Shateem, you are on your way to victory, so don’t give up!

Do you know that there’s no problem in your life that God cannot solve? You might be think-ing, Joyce, you just don’t know what’s been going on in my life. You’re right, I don’t. But I do know what it’s like to be hurt. I know that many of you have had some very tragic and disappointing things happen to you. Maybe as a child your parents, family members, or other adults that should have been protecting, teaching, and training you, disappointed you. The whole world may have disappointed you, but God will not disap-point you. You can put your trust in Him. In my childhood, I was sexually abused by my father for many, many years. My mom didn’t know how to help me, so she just pre-tended it wasn’t happening. That was a tragedy in itself because I had my father abusing me and my mother abandoning me. And I’m not telling you this just to bring up ugly stories, but I know many of you reading this have had the same kind of things happen to you. I know the loneliness and pain of secrecy. Many times the devil lied to me and told me that I’d never have a good life and that any life I might ever have would be inferior, a second-class type of life. But I want to tell you that if you will give your pain to Jesus, He will give you a double blessing for your former trouble. He will lift you up and restore you—body, mind, emotions and spirit. What God has done in my life is nothing less than a miracle. All I really had was my mouth, and look what God’s done with that! Whatever it is that you have, even though it may not seem very significant, if you’ll give it to Jesus, He’ll do something awesome with you. Maybe it’s your mouth, like me, or possibly your hands or feet. Perhaps it’s the love of Jesus shining through your eyes. Make a decision right now to have the best life you can possibly have in this world. Decide that you are not going to waste it. No matter what has happened to you up to this point, you don’t have to sit and feel sorry for yourself because it won’t change one thing. You can choose to

shake off self-pity and say, “I’m going to let my pain become my gain.” Maybe you have never asked Jesus to be the Lord of your life. You can receive His forgive-ness and new life by admitting that you’re a sinner and by saying, “I’m sorry for my sins.” When you do, you’re also saying, “I’m willing to turn away from my sins and stop living like I’ve been living.” I’m living proof that God is alive and working in the lives of people. He can change you into His image, lift you up out of whatever ash heap you’ve been sitting in, and give you a life worth living. There’s no pit too deep for Him to reach down into and pull you out. If you’re ready to give your life to Jesus, I invite you to pray the following prayer:

Jesus, I love You and believe in You. I’m convinced in my heart that You died for me and paid the price for my sins. I am sorry for my sins and the way I’ve lived. Forgive me. Wash me clean of every sin. Please come and live in me right now. I receive you, Jesus. Amen!

The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:17 that when you ask Jesus into your life, you are now …a new creation (a new crea-ture altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come! Begin your fresh and new life with Christ today. E

pleasing you. The inclination to this thought pattern begins in very small ways, but each small thing you see is a sign that their heart is being lured away from you. It seems hopeless. Yet, there is something we can do! We, as their parents, need to intervene! We’ve got to get their hearts back. This will not happen by commanding them, but by wooing them. As parents, it’s our job to continue to woo the hearts of our kids so they want to listen to us. And if we allow the culture or their friends to overpower them, it becomes incredibly hard to regain the respect they once had for us.

The recipe for Their Hearts is TiMe.This may not be easy for you to hear. The saying

“quality time is better than quantity” is wrong. Parenting means sacrifice. We need to do things with our kids and lean into them by building bonds and memories together through shared experiences. This is what begins to draw their hearts toward us. After you have spent “quantity” time with your son or daughter, they will begin to see that you care and that you desire to listen to them. Eventually they’re going to share their heart with you. Depending on how hard your kids are or how controlled and manipulated they are by the culture and their friends, it might take a sig-nificant investment of time up front to win their hearts back. But it’s not impossible. Start this pattern of “quantity” time while they’re young!

let’s Become Parents Who Re-Create the culture in Our Homes! This is our job as parents: to woo their hearts, to influence their hearts and then to keep their hearts. Be encouraged. You can do it! E

As a new school year descends upon us, with all the obligatory “back-to-school” sales and hype, we have to ask ourselves, “What are my kids going to learn this year besides the three ‘r’s’—reading, writing and arithmetic?” What I mean is, many of us have seen our kids pick up things at school that we don’t particularly like. Maybe it’s an attitude that disrespects you or some new music lyrics that shock you or even a pornographic pop-up ad while they are doing their homework. Get ready, because these things will happen. We as parents have to be prepared for them. We have to build a godly culture in our homes that our kids are drawn to and that is stronger than the culture bombarding them. How can we build a godly culture in our homes that goes “back to school” with our kids, rather than them bringing an unwanted culture back home?

understanding the cultureOur kids are falling into the trap of culture. You can’t fall into a trap without being deceived, and today’s culture is a Zen master of deception. It offers all the shine but shows none of the grime. Deception doesn’t happen quickly, and this culture has a lot of time to repeat its message over and over again. The result is that our kids start transferring the ownership of their hearts from us to something else. One culture mogul is quoted as saying, “We don’t advertise to this generation; we own this generation.” In many ways, it’s really true. What they say goes. What they put on their network sells. We can tell our kids, “As long as you’re a part of my house, you’re not going to watch that or wear that.” But responses such as these don’t really get to the issue of who owns their heart.

There is HopeSomewhere in the process, our kids get tuned out to anything we have to say. They don’t want to talk about things or listen to what we have to say. It seems like they don’t want our influence, which

itself is part of the deception. If they do listen, they do it begrudgingly and with the wrong heart. They’re not embracing the values we’re trying to get them to embrace. This is not something that is sudden. While it seems like a surprise to us, they have gradually transferred the ownership of their hearts from you, their parents, to their friends or the culture. Kids grow into a frame of mind where they care more about pleasing their friends than they care about

As Christians we are called to be bold like Jesus and to walk in the authority He gives to us.

No, it’s not a typo. The title really does read Roaring Above Our Circumstances. We usually hear encouragement to soar above our difficulties, but have you ever considered roaring? Proverbs 28:1 says, The wicked flee when no man pursues them, but the [uncompromisingly] righteous are bold as a lion.

lionheartedLions just seem to stir up images of bravery, fearlessness, and of a majestic animal that stands his ground and is in command of the situation. He walks in authority. Yet, Scripture can seem a bit confusing when considering what a lion represents spiritually. In Revelation 5:5, Jesus is re-ferred to as the Lion of the tribe of Judah. But in 1 Peter 5:8, the devil is referred to as one who roams around like a lion roaring. It might appear like a mixed message. However, there is a distinct difference. Jesus is the Lion, the One who is King and has all authority, whereas the devil is roaming around like a lion—an imposter pretending to have authority. Jesus says in Matthew 28:18, …All authority (all power of rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. We can be bold as a lion by walking in authority. As Christians we are called to be bold like Jesus and to walk in the authority He gives to us. We can be bold as a lion through our prayers. A lion is known for his thunderous R-O-A-R that seems to rumble and almost shake the atmosphere. His roar is hard to miss. No wonder he’s called the “king of the jungle;” his mighty call vibrates with authority and sends his enemies running for cover.

By praying bold, roaring prayers in Jesus’ name, we too can send our enemies scurrying. Zachariah declared in Luke 1:71 that through Jesus …we should have deliverance and be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who detest and pursue us with hatred. We can be bold as a lion in our faith. A lion has the ability to take down prey much larger than himself. Although he seems to have a proportionate disadvantage to face animals like buffalos and other big creatures, he is un-daunted by the apparent mismatched size and determined to be victorious. Lion-like boldness is facing larger than life circumstances fearlessly. It’s not letting the im-possibility of a situation cause us to give up, but being relentless in our pursuit of victory. Jesus urged us to be bold in our faith when He said, …you can say to this mountain, Move from here to yonder place, and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you (Matthew 17:20). As Christians we don’t want to be like the lion in the Wizard of Oz, who walked around with his tail tucked between his legs because he didn’t know that inside, he already pos-sessed the courage to be bold. God has called us to be bold as a lion and He’s placed the bold-ness of Jesus inside of us. Are you ready to roar? E
