Introduction

Putting a price on a magic book is far from being an exact science.Apart from the the book's content and its author, many factors must beconsidered: the edition, the condition of the book, the publication date,how many copies were printed, if it's still available or out of print, if anupcoming reprint was recently announced, the presence or lack of a dustjacket, if it's a signed copy, etc. You might also have some subjectivecriteria: perhaps you received the book as a gift, it was your first magicbook, it reminds of a favorite lecture you attended, etc.

It goes without saying that evaluating a magic library is a timeconsuming process. Although we are dealing with magic books, there isno magic way to arrive easily at an exact value. However, hopefully, thisguide will make the task easier for you.

In the current edition, named Crop 1203, nearly 10,000 priceswere compiled for 7 time periods.

Note that lowest or highest prices have been dropped from thecompilation. The same is true for books coming from prominentcollections or offered by prestigious auctioneers.

Most values of this guide are presented as a range from low tohigh; for example, $6 ... $31. The figures on left generally apply tosoftcover editions, recent editions or reprints. The figures on the right arefor hardcover editions with dust jackets, first or deluxe editions andsigned copies.

If you are looking to buy a certain work but are not in a hurry, aimfor the figures on the left side. Otherwise, go for the figures on the rightside.

If you are a seller eager to sell, aim for the figures on the left side.Otherwise, go for the figures on the right side.

You will also notice that values are given for different years (from1992 to 2012). If you see an abrupt rise, it might mean that it's aworthwhile book that has recently gone out of print. On the other hand, ifyou see a sharp decline, it might mean that a reprint just came out. Thechanges through time will also tell you if the value is now stable or stillvolatile.

Keep in mind that, whatever values the guide suggests, youshould by no means put aside your own evaluation.
