Full Metal Jousting Armor and WeaponMaintenance is Critical

The History channel premiered its new showFull Metal Jousting on February 12, 2012 tostellar ratings that grew each half hour. New

episodes begin this Sunday with an episode titled

Unhorsed that promises to show at least one Jous-ter heading to the injury list.

The premise of the show is that 16 contestants splitinto two teams to compete to be the last man on their2,000 pound warhorse to win $100,000. To avoidfatal injury from blows with over 1,000 pounds offorce (it only takes 7 pounds with a punch to knocksomeone out), armor and lances will need to havethorough inspections and repair after each battle.

    Brief History of Jousting

Originally started as a Calvary training tactic, jous-ting soon developed as a sport in the high middleages (10th-13th centuries). By the end of the 13thcentury jousting tournaments had become a wayfor knights to earn fame and money. Jousting tour-naments in this time were often brutal with death/injury to man and horse.

Jousting continued to develop with specic rules andarmor. By the end of the 15th century, two forms of

jousting had evolved. The rst made use of heavyplate armor and helmets that weighed up to 100pounds and severely limited the movement of theknight. The object was to unhorse the knight (tilting).

The second was more sportive and centered aroundthe striking of specied targets for points. Armorwas lighter and included some chain mail, a lighter

helmet, normal accessories and lots of decorativecloth. At this point, Lances were often made of balsawood which were intended to break to avoid signi-cant injury.

Jousting increased in popularity and continued tothrive until King Henry II of France was killed in atournament in 1559. Soon after jousting was bannedas a sport and existed only as theatrics for severalhundred years.

    Jousting Armor and Weapons

Full metal jousting is based upon the more brutalform of medieval jousting. Special metal fabrica-tion was done to construct the armor and 11 footlances are now made out of solid r tree wood. Theestimated weight for the stainless steel armor isapproximately 80-85 pounds.

To give you some idea of what the contestants willbe wearing and their individual costs:

    Bascinets/Helmets costs $800 $1,600

Breastplates/Harnesses $ 1,500 Arm harness, Spaulders (shoulder armor),

elbow cops, $ 500 Gauntlets $800 1,200 Leg Harness, Greaves, Knee cops, Schyn-

balds, Sabatons (shoes) $2,900-$3,500 Decorative Accessories (belts etc) $100-

    $500 Shields $100 (plain)

    Lances $ 200

    * Equipment and prices from Anshelm Arms andArmor a division of Dixie Fried Fabrication, themakers of the armor for the TV show.

Although I might have missed one or two items, youcan see that it costs between $ 6,700 and $ 8,900 tofully outt a knight. At a 1,000 pounds of force perhit this armor will not last for long. Like any steel, once the metal has been compromised repairs will

only return a fraction of its original strength.

    Jousting Warhorses and Saddles

Armor and weapons are only a part of the costs.Warhorses weighing 2,000 pounds require yearsof training and care. Each horse is also outttedwith protective head and chest armor that can costanywhere from $2,000 $5000 (including saddle).Unfortunately, I was not able to nd specics onthis so perhaps one of our readers can share theirknowledge with us.

The Importance of Inspections,Preventive Maintenance and

    Repairs

Given the violence that is inherent in the contest itis critical that inspections, preventive maintenanceand repairs be performed on the equipment. Wi-thout an organized maintenance plan liability from

injury could end up cancelling the show before anyprots are realized.

Injury and liability can be minimized by ensuringthat after each battle and over the course of theshow that inspections, maintenance and repairsare performed for:

Loose rivets, fasteners as well as other parts

that can come loose when a blow is struckor a rider hits the ground.

Saddles and horse armor. Cracked lances Metal punctures Failed metal temperance Corrosion Stables Arena maintenance such as seating, horse

    runs, barriers and so on.

Although this is just another television show, the riskof injury makes maintenance of all sports venuesand equipment assets a high priority. Yet, somehowI get the feeling that this is the forerunner to Roller-ball or Running Man becoming a reality.
