Journeys have always been an interesting subject to me. I fi nd that everything, no matter where you go, has a story behind it, and imagining that story is something that a lot of people overlook. Opening not only your eyes, but your mind to your surroundings can make any journey, no matter how mundane, become something completely different. This book features a collection of my journeys, ranging from the very small, to the very large, from a journey using your hands, to a journey using transport to cover many miles.

A journey can be visualised, no matter what it is. Anything you do can be a journey; be it a journey of progress or a journey of physical distance. I created this book to show how each journey is something special, and to explain that point A or point B aren’t the only factors. My study lies between point A and point B. The maps in this book were created using an intense study of location, and recreating them visually. Each map is accompanied by 6 photographs taken using various cameras, but fi ltered using Instagram. These photographs help to tell my personal story behind each map, which on it’s own is almost a detachment of the journey’s depth, but together work to recreate it.

This book consists of twelve journeys, which are ordered from small scale to large scale. A journey can be anything you make it - It’s about the journey, not the destination.

This is the fi rst of the twelve journeys for this collection. I’ve started with the smallest scale - the Engine; a journey using my hands. This takes place soley inside the engine bay of my car. This was not only a journey of distance, but a journey of progress, in which I set out to replace my Air Flow Meter and

clean my Idle Control Valve, Each location on the map marks a different level of progress. I’ve always found the sheer amount of detail in an engine bay to be astonishing, and to think that everything works together perfectly to allow the car to run as it should is an amazing feat which is always overlooked,

This is the second of my twelve journeys which takes place inside my fl at. This is another small scale journey, but one that involves a mixture of walking and using my hands. This sort of journey is one that most people establish an ‘order’ in which to do things, and do it every day without realising. It’s

only when you start to look into the journey that you discover hidden details. This particular journey took place in the morning before going to University, which involved getting ready, breakfast and catching up with things online. At every stage I’m always looking at things in my fl at and thinking about their story.

This is the third journey of my collection, which took place inside a pet shop. This is still a small scale journey, but moving up in size from the previous two. This journey was interesting because of the story behind it. During the time I was collecting journeys and photos for this book, we got a new dog, which

involved us needing to buy her a collar, food, training accessories and toys. We took her with us, and it’s a journey I’ll always remember as the fi rst time we shopped for her. This was the fi rst of three different shopping journeys for this book, but I had already noticed a distinct map style when shopping

This is the fourth of my journeys, and the second of the shopping journeys. This one took place in my local supermarket on my weekly shop, making this another small scale journey. Everyone’s shopping experience is different, but the aisles make everyone take a route that will always look similar when

mapped out. Grocery shopping is something most people would never consider a journey, but the way in which people move inside a store creates an interesting map. My journey consists of shopping for my weekly needs, but on this particular shopping trip, we found a small plastic man to join us.

This is the fi fth of my journeys, and the third and fi nal shopping journey. This one moves up slightly in scale, but it’s still one that I’d consider small due to it being shopping indoors. I was already interested by the way in which the layout of a shop determines the style of the map, but the shopping mall in Bristol

created a very unique style map. Not only was I entering single shops, but also following the shape of the mall, which created an unusual ‘arrow’ shape map. There’s a lot of decoration which caught my attention as well. My journey consisted of visiting various shops, and a coffee break in between.

This is the sixth of my journeys, which took place in Frampton Cotterell in Bristol on a nature walk. This is where the scale of my journeys start to increase. I like to explore on these journeys, and this route is roughly 3 miles. Due to it’s larger scale, the map has more of a familiar map style than the previous smaller ones.

This route is amazing because of the things you can fi nd on it. There’s an abundance of old fashioned objects and walkways, including overgrown iron farming equipment and old bridges, which always keeps me imagining the story behind them and the people that have used them many years ago.

This is the seventh journey of my collection, which takes place at the Castle Combe race circuit in Wiltshire. Motorsport is a great passion of mine, and a race circuit is all about racing through the journey. The layout of the map is that of the race track itself. When racing around the circuit, it’s easy to overlook

the surroundings because you’re so focused on the track itself. However, When I wasn’t racing, I was able to think about details of the track and it’s story. It’s interesting to look at a part of track and imagine yourself tearing around it at 100mph. The contrast between driving and thinking here is fascinating.

This is the eighth journey of my collection, which is the Thursday night car meets. This is a slightly larger scale journey, which involves multiple stops. All the car enthusiasts turn out to meet people and see the cars, which I think is an amazing example of homage to the car - a huge part of modern journeys.

Not only is the route of the night a personal journey, but the other cars themselves are a journey of modifi cation and progress. To these people, a car is more than just a journey machine. The map shows the roads used on the journey of the night, which is shared with the other like minded individuals.

This is my ninth journey of my collection, which shows my route around London. This journey was mostly on the London Underground and on foot. London has always been a fascinating place to me, and even after living here for 3 years, there’s still so much to see, and everything has a story. London is

an infi nate collection of stories and sights. The map I created for this journey shows my movement on the tube, following set lines. I stayed in London from daylight until night time. I travelled around to meet people, shop and explore, giving me the oppertunity to take long exposure photos as well at night.

This is my tenth journey in my collection, and one of the more seemingly mundane ones in which I drive to University. To some, the journey might just be that; mundane, but when you notice the details and appreciate the journey, it becomes something different. The route is always the same, but there’s

always something that changes each time I take the journey. Our ease of travel is taken for granted, but I like to explore the overlooked details of these journeys. The map itself again looks more similar to that of maps we are familiar to as it’s larger scale. Each photo tells part of the story of my journey.

The eleventh journey in my collection is one of my favourites, and also one in which the journey is literally the meaning of the event. The ‘Miss Banzai Tunnel Run’ is roughly a twenty mile route, once you’re in London, of tunnels and roads. The event brings people from all over the country to drive the

route with other drivers to appreciate driving and the sound of the high performance cars; another great homage to the car. The run is all about the A to B. The map shows the route that roughly 500 Japanese cars took, and the photos are part of the story, showing the mood and companionship of the night.

This is the twelfth and fi nal journey in my collection. This is the largest one - roughly 148 miles in which I drive from London to Bristol to visit family and friends. Because I enjoy driving, a long distance drive is an oppertunity for me to get away and have a change of scenery. A long drive makes me feel free.

I always stop for fuel before I leave, and have little things that accompany me. Music is a great compliment to a long drive, and driving a car that feels personal to you makes you feel comfortable. I fi nd the service stations interesting, and fi nd myself wondering where the other people could be going.

Journey Collective is a collection of my personal journeys. These journeys range from very small to large scale distance. This book will show you that almost anything can be visualised as a journey, and that every journey has a story, no matter how small. Let this book encourage you to be curious when travelling - there’s more to every journey than there seems. Between point A and point B is where the story unfolds. It’s the journey, not the destination.
